This is a common problem in vintage and older petrol/diesel cars as well, the batteries eventually die if the car is left and no charge is being produced. My family collect vintage vehicles and we have to run them at least every 3 months for an extended period of time, over wise we have to jump start or the battery degrades. This also affects newer cars when left for a long period of time, only these types of cars can just be left running in a driveway to recharge the battery, and don't need to actually be driven in order to keep the charge up. The more you know...
Heck, this is a problem with laptops, tablets, and smartphones, too. Store them for a month and the battery goes dead, maybe even so dead it won't accept a charge anymore.
Yes all batteries self-discarge, however there is a gigantic difference between 1/4 of a year and 4 days. And so we are clear the LiIon batteries Tesla uses have one of the slowest self-discharges, if the car was really off it should only have 2% discharge per month, and he lost 11% in 4 days making it 38x faster then any regular discharge. Meaning they don't really turn the car off so you constantly risk fancy computers running your batteries into the ground.

At 1:15 he says 30 miles remaining. 5% battery loss per day required you to know the full range and calculate. With a such a giant screen in the car you'd think there was a display of battery over time so your could judge your stay. Otherwise what is that screen used for?? Lithium batteries actually hold their charge well so there's no excuse for such a high vampire current draw.
Yeah, but then you Step 1-Open hood Step 2-Disconnect and remove battery Step 3-Throw away battery in safe place Step 4-Buy a new battery Step 5-Install new battery Total cost:100-200$ depending on your battery. Cost to replace Tesla battery? More than 10k at least
He wasn't aware that leaving the car off for 4 days would discharge the battery. He said he had 30 miles of drive time left on the batteries when he parked.
Yeah - it took me all of three minutes to find the battery care section in the manual, and read the warning about storage, and the special paragraph about airport parking... So the key take-away is "RTFM"
The fluid is circulated within the intermediate layer by a pump to ensure both the seat bottom and seatback are evenly heated and cooled, without one spot getting too hot or cold.
Dan, actually phones will still discharge over time. It could take weeks but it will still discharge even when off. Being the Tesla has a secondary battery that maintains the system the system when the car is off I would have to assume the cars main batteries have no draw when the car is off but they can still suffer from passive discharge. The big question is why the secondary battery which I suspect is just a standard car battery discharged in 4 days. Its possible that battery was at the end of its life. The car is a few years old isn't it. Most standard 12V car batteries wear out over time and lose their ability to hold a charge although I would have expected that Tesla designed a monitoring system into the Tesla to monitor the secondary batteries performance and life so I would expect that you would have had some sort of warning on the dash well advance of the incident suggesting service and replacement for that battery.
Nothing much actually. Just a few thousands of 18650 batteries. Powerbanks has the same kind of cell (well, most of them) as the Tesla has in their cars
Lots of know-it-alls here making fun of this guy, but I find it to be a useful, informative video. People who do not have an electric car should be hearing the whole story, not just the positive hype.
It's not his fault evs are still junk, and the hype that's been created around them is a nationalistic US against middle eastern oil hype...but many of the problems which caused evs to be seen as a lessor option still exist, admittedly to a lessor degree, but they still there and I wouldn't waste my time with them. When they produce better vehcles I'll bother, but I'd rather pay extra then wait an hour at the petrol station every time i need fuel...
zeyd you know nothing about what you are say. I have had mine for three years. It has been a FAR superior experience than any of my past forty Fossil cars. They are easier and more car free than any Fossil car.
Propel, Tesla is NOT bigger than Ford or GM. Ford probably sells more in a month than they do in a yr. I've only seen a handful of Teslas and no dealerships but Ford and GMs are all over the globe
Neal Ramsey , No one said they were big than GM or Ford. Because of their stock values they are more valuable than GM or Ford. They do make twice the profit per car than GM or Ford. However they spend all that profit and more to continue their unprecedented growth.
That was your first mistake, having less than 30 miles on an electric car and turning it off? Do you turn off your iphone when it's at like 2%? No, you charge it. Bruh, use yo head.
Buying a tessla is good but it's a battery a battery use at least 3 to 5 percent of its battery on till it's completely turned off Like your smartphones battery if you don't power of it and off it using the button it will at least 2 percent of its battery , while if you turn off you phone completely it will not lose battery.
Most people don't. That's why you find a gas powered car broken down every few miles on the Interstate. I count up to 7 vehicles a trip on the side of the road. Some with their license plates removed I'm guessing as they don't want them back.
I know it's old, but I just came across this video today. This is a scenario where something like peer to peer charging would come in handy. I wonder what Ben S would think of that idea.
Be advised that every time you check the status of the car in order for it to do that the car must full turn itself on which if you already know the battery is low don't check it as it uses a bit of power to tell you the battery is low. Question 2 Why are you still charging at home on a 120 volt outlet? Have a simple 14-50 outlet installed and you charge at up to 31 miles per hour instead of 3 or 4 miles per hour. Then you will wake up to a fully charged battery every morning ( 85%) instead of less. Question 3 If your charging cable for the car is long enough why not plug it in for 10 minutes would give you enough power to release the parking brake and roll her off the ramp bed. The flashing lights after the tow driver jumped the 12 volt battery to get it off the truck wasn't enough juice after he disconnected the booster battery the car didn't have sufficient power to work properly which is why the lock mechanism was giving you problems plugging in. Just mark it up as a learning experience on the idiosyncrasies of an EV.
it's because there is a high tech computer inside the car that's why the screen is there and remember it updates like an iPhone so that's why it's using 5% of your battery a normal car dosnt have all of that to keep updating and checking while it's off
I'm a tow truck flatbed driver and we deal with teslas all the time. the newer ones will have a little piece that you'll pry off in the front (looks like a sensor but bigger) that will expose the charge cables to jumpstart the 12v. usually its located in the front of the car on the driver side. also if the charger port ever gets stuck from a dead tesla (model s) you can pop the trunk, on the left side of the trunk there will be a carpeted circle almost that you can pop of . inside you'll find a small switch right behind the wire to the battery that you can switch to release the charger. literally just had to do this to a tesla a few days ago lol
also, you can call Tesla's hotline, 24/7, and get live advice/instructions, that very minute. It uses power, all the time, since it is 'talking,' to the satellite, for updates, etc.
bring a gas generator, plug it in and let it charge until it runs out of gas lol. you'll then have enough power to get home or to the nearest charging station.
Very creative. But not sure if that would have enough Amps or watts or whatever these things use, haha. Someone needs a small battery that is charged already and you can just deliver it ,put it in the trunk and connect to the dead one and it could leach the good battery into the dead one like running in parallel and then it could run.
So glad you shared this. All the people saying bad things about you is not warranted. Most people want to buy a Tesla because of the low maintenance. This was very informative. Thank you!
Sith Lord for real and he left his car at 30 out of it's 280 out 300 mile max capacity. That's like leaving your phone on 10% turning it off and expecting it to work 4 days later like wtf
yeah but it would not be dead in only 4 days, which is where electric cars fail unless there are charging stations and people responsible enough to leave early enough to charge their car up on the way to the airport, then would probably need a charge on the way home but it would have at least been driven home.
Anthony E. You're argument is extremely valid and i totally agree. It is still be technology and will only get better as the years go on and soon they'll probably have portable back up batteries for when your tesla dues which will probably be huge but still a good response
Jose you don't even need a super charger. The base one that it comes with recycles the energy that you don't use while charging. It also doesn't damage the battery when you do it.

Actually internal combustion vehicles do lose fuel via evaporation but in recent years it has improved with the advent of PZEV. Electrics are still at version 0.1 so lets wait until there is say 20 years of combined industry development behind them to make any real comparisons. Judging by how rapidly one company has advanced them I doubt there will be any comparison before long.
Chris Hax : There'll be plenty of comparison. EV cars pollute just like any other. It costs Co2 to generate electricity and to build those toxic batteries (which, as they move on from the recyclable but reaching it's peak Lithium/ion, will become non recyclable!) Renewables are highly unlikely to ever be capable of providing anything like enough power and Nuclear...!! The most dangerous and polluting of all! There's only one form of energy whose waste nature loves and that's the carbon based version. Remember ALL forms of energy production produce waste and the airborne version get's carried everywhere by the wind, so the notion that EV's are better that way is a fallacy. That's a fact and the reason why I don't fall for all this 'Green Energy' propaganda.
Except that 12v battery Only runs the car systems Not the motors, that's what the massive battery pack under most of the car does at vastly higher voltage
The problem getting out of the parking spot was your horrendous parking job. Yeah, blame that truck parked properly. So many comments about you owning a Tesla. I tend to agree - it's the wrong car for you. Get a Camry...
Seems like there would have been an electrical outlet somewhere in that garage. Maybe he only needed to pick up the portable charge cable and long extension cord or rent a generator from home depot for an hour. Although, guess it would not have been as interesting of a video. Who knows, maybe he let the battery run down in order to make the video and possibly get something from Tesla.
486DX266 that's actually what I've been thinking. Just get yourself a charger and an extension cord. It takes a couple of hours to charge using the regular charger, but once the car is ready to go just drive home and give it a good charge.
True, charge the car in the parking garage, it is easy and cheap compared to calling a toe truck. If you keep a jump pack in the car then you will always prepared for this type of problem.
if one has a ice car and a useable garage to put their car in, get a (battery tender,) it keeps it charged between 80% to 100% (NO, NOT A BATTERY CHARGER) a good battery will last for at least 9 years.
This is the saddest show of how little people know about their cars and how when you escalate to another level of tech it takes another level of knowledge for care and feeding. I bet you ten bucks everything described here including care and feeding IS IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. Look on RUclips to remove the front grill (plate) how about the book in the glove box?
Now on that angle you are absolutely correct Dude! In any product you should read the User's Manual....afterall that is the purpose why all products have User's Manual right?!
I'm glad he's complaining, it better informs me of the flaws of these first-gen vehicles. This issue should be addressed by tesla with solar panels on the roof on the next generation...
You left it on a 30 miles and max range of Tesla P90D model when is full capacity is 270 miles?!? And you complain here about you don't have any more juice in the batteries?
Bizzo Brigante ok if you drive a car with gasoline you're going to loose miles on it too. a car doesn't stay at 270 mile range. maybe he was driving far and there was no tesla charge stations. and he said he didn't know you loose 2-5% of battery a day without using it. grow up man
If you are going on a trip with a plane you certainly don't leave a car on a 30 miles radius and go away for 10 days and expect battery to stay on the same level after returning back?! For instance he could quick charge a car for a hour or two before the trip and he would still have at least 140 miles radius! I understand the analogy with cars using gasoline but this comparison is foolish! The proper comparison would be to compare a Tesla car with a electronic device like smartphone or laptop that has gone in standby or hibernation and still using some portion of the battery capacity. ( You understand that this is actually what a "huge electronic device" like a Tesla car is doing when is not in the drive mode? ) Btw. You said grow up? I should say smart up! :-)
Yeah great video that was created out of "I really don't know why" reason of the Tesla owner here :-) Btw. I'm chilled but people really upload all sort of nonsense videos on RUclips and we general public have to digest that crap!
My battery died at 106,000 miles and will cost 20,000 to replace. That’s 19 cents per mile + electricity costs to run my car. Considering at $5 per gallon a 30 MPG car only costs 16 cents per mile, there is no way my tesla was more cost efficient than and ICE car. I loved my tesla but I am over it now. I’ll buy from a better company in the future.
no, but the RTFM acronym has been around for decades. Why would you buy a new generation toy and not want to know and absorb everything about it? What does he think it is? a fridge?
A friends ms did the same thing in a parking lot when he wound up staying in California for 26 days to straighten out a new to the customers Cnc machine. Turns out the computer was bad and had to be replaced. When he got back to Boston his someone had unplugged his car from the 110 volt outlet. Plugged it back in and just over three hours later he left the parking lot to a destination charger at the Tesla gallery in Boston to charge it up so he could reach the supercharger in Bow, New Hampshire. The parking lot attendant unplugged it and management told him it would not happen again. He asked the manager to get some destination chargers from Tesla and he said he would look into it. His computer said he had zero miles on it when he arrived at the Boston gallery. Cheers!
1st of all, spelling police: ... *would - - 2nd of all, I was thinking the same thing - in a pinch you could rent a portable generator for a couple hours and charge up the car (every Tesla owner should have a cable in the trunk that will connect 110 to the charging port). I just posted an ultra-long comment describing this all in detail :-)
not to mention "work good" (should be work well). The 1st respondent wrote "to" instead of "too". Back on topic: I went for a test drive and it's an amazing automobile.
about the battery, i learned in science in school that electricity is stored in the battery and when you first put it in it will release the electricity and if you keep the battery in it will still drain. So you should take the battery out every night because if you take it out the electricity will become static electricity and stay in the battery and not get used.

@@Anotherdaynparadise, common sense, just like knowing your car will lose all of it's remaining range while you are on the trip? I imagine many EV owners have learned this lesson the same way.
Nikolas Tesla I think he meant to charge it instead of getting a tow truck, like as in getting a generator after they found it dead. Not during their trip...
Yeah, I'd just sit in the car playing angry birds on my phone/tablet while a portable generator recharges it. That, or watch a movie on my phone while I get enough of a charge to get the car home.
I got one of those little jump starter things I put in my car just in case it doesnt want to start. I wonder why Tesla doesn't put a charger in each car that will jump start and give you at least 20 miles to get you somewhere to fill up? How hard would that be and with all the money you spend it should be like a spare wheel and just part of the car.
Robert Days depleted batteries need a boost. Tesla’s have huge batteries and the boost required is high. Just don’t park the car with so little juice left for days. That’s not how EVs work.
My mistake for saying jump start. I was thinking a charge pack that can charge the car up enough to get you somewhere to get a proper charge. And why would you have an extra battery pack in the trunk? As he said, the car drained itself while sitting at the airport. Another solution would be a long term parking switch that turns everything off while not being used long term.... like at the airport. But yes a power pack in the trunk would be cool not just for the car but for lights, charging phones jump starting friends petrol cars, electricity while camping etc. But yeah, not jump start.
I don't even own a tesla but know its basically like a phone. The part at 1:00 to 1:05 was painful to watch because you should know by now at least that it's a 100% electric and has a battery. That means its basically like most appliances that have batteries and are not charged constantly. Even your phone loses charge if the screen is turned off and not being used.

You could have just brought an extra charger and a normal power outlet adapter, charge it there.
Uhm why so surprised?
When you leave your phone for a couple of hours the battery percentage will also go down?
+Banned Daddeh not when it is turned off.
Most standard 12V car batteries wear out over time and lose their ability to hold a charge although I would have expected that Tesla designed a monitoring system into the Tesla to monitor the secondary batteries performance and life so I would expect that you would have had some sort of warning on the dash well advance of the incident suggesting service and replacement for that battery.
if your phone is turned out, you should be able to turn it back on after a few days. what's on the car that uses that electricity is the question.
WHAT'S INSIDE? FAMILY but isn't a telsta always on? Like to 'sense' stuff, if you wanted to open te car f.e

Propel, Tesla is NOT bigger than Ford or GM. Ford probably sells more in a month than they do in a yr. I've only seen a handful of Teslas and no dealerships but Ford and GMs are all over the globe
Neal Ramsey ,
No one said they were big than GM or Ford. Because of their stock values they are more valuable than GM or Ford. They do make twice the profit per car than GM or Ford. However they spend all that profit and more to continue their unprecedented growth.

What was the range left when this dude parked it for 2 weeks? 25 miles?? I guess he doesn't get the concept of overnight charging at home.

Be advised that every time you check the status of the car in order for it to do that the car must full turn itself on which if you already know the battery is low don't check it as it uses a bit of power to tell you the battery is low.
Question 2
Why are you still charging at home on a 120 volt outlet? Have a simple 14-50 outlet installed and you charge at up to 31 miles per hour instead of 3 or 4 miles per hour.
Then you will wake up to a fully charged battery every morning ( 85%) instead of less.
Question 3
If your charging cable for the car is long enough why not plug it in for 10 minutes would give you enough power to release the parking brake and roll her off the ramp bed.
The flashing lights after the tow driver jumped the 12 volt battery to get it off the truck wasn't enough juice after he disconnected the booster battery the car didn't have sufficient power to work properly which is why the lock mechanism was giving you problems plugging in.
Just mark it up as a learning experience on the idiosyncrasies of an EV.
wow, problem after problem.
Yup lesson learned. Don't drain it so low. Do you fill it up at home?
Chris Bates I do .. every day.. always drive off with a full charge.. no excuse for a 10% battery charge..
it's because there is a high tech computer inside the car that's why the screen is there and remember it updates like an iPhone so that's why it's using 5% of your battery a normal car dosnt have all of that to keep updating and checking while it's off
seriously? that is an extremely large battery you are talking about, there is more going on than "updating"
Bro seriously park it in the electric vehicle parking? They have chargers and it's closer to where you need to go...
also, you can call Tesla's hotline, 24/7, and get live advice/instructions, that very minute. It uses power, all the time, since it is 'talking,' to the satellite, for updates, etc.
oh man even just watching this video makes me feel that my IQ is dropping.

bring a gas generator, plug it in and let it charge until it runs out of gas lol. you'll then have enough power to get home or to the nearest charging station.
Very creative. But not sure if that would have enough Amps or watts or whatever these things use, haha. Someone needs a small battery that is charged already and you can just deliver it ,put it in the trunk and connect to the dead one and it could leach the good battery into the dead one like running in parallel and then it could run.

Chris Hax
: There'll be plenty of comparison.

Jump packs don't/can't carry enough power to charge the battery pack to move the car let alone drive it
it is also bad for the battery to leave it discharged. Ideal for battery life is to leave it at around 60%
if one has a ice car and a useable garage to put their car in, get a (battery tender,) it keeps it charged between 80% to 100% (NO, NOT A BATTERY CHARGER) a good battery will last for at least 9 years.

He asked the manager to get some destination chargers from Tesla and he said he would look into it. about the battery, i learned in science in school that electricity is stored in the battery and when you first put it in it will release the electricity and if you keep the battery in it will still drain. So you should take the battery out every night because if you take it out the electricity will become static electricity and stay in the battery and not get used.

Dude…. you can't jumpstart an electric car.
No you just need enough power to get you somewhere rather than locking you out of the car.
