Do you remember when mainstream media pushed a bunch of crap and there’s still thousands upon thousand of great musicians that take nothing but a quick google search or Spotify browse?
These were the days that if you weren't good live you were booed off stage. You made your money on tour not in the studio. The quality of singers and musicians of that era were on another level.
I believe its because he wasnt "edgy" enough and he was in a revolving door kinda band. (Starship changed and mutated for like 20+years) And finally, critics, in his last years, think he sold out and strayed away from Starship's roots. Im not saying I agree with this, its just an opinion as to whty he doesnt get credit for one of the best rock vocalist of all time.
The whole band is superb from Mickey Thomas’s vocals to Craig Chaquico’s guitar but Aynsley Dunbars drumming stands out. It is absolutely sublime here.
Yes....People often toss around the term 'underrated' to strengthen an argument when it's unwarranted....In the case of Aynsley Dunbar, though, it is without question a legit statement of fact....One of the greatest, and most prolific drummers in rock history, and yet if mention him to many, drummers even, you will get the tilted head, quizzical look.
Always wondered why Jefferson Starship never appeared on SNL. That show, 'Fridays', was about all they ever did on TV. Never once did they perform on 'Midnight Special' either. Only on MTV, but that's an entirely different animal. Good to see this again though, it's been too long......almost 43 years!! 😊
Had?... (not bashing please do not take it that way...your post was 10 years ago).... While this video was recorded for TV(as such had much better recording equipment) this video from 2023 show that Mickey Thomas still could go up there over 40 years later... and my link was recoded with a cell phone.... ruclips.net/video/cCVeH1G1jKs/видео.html
What an epic performance although it's live it sounds even better than the recording, awesome musicians and vocals... who's here during the Corona virus break of 2020? 😛
Holy Smokes! How amazing this is! WOW! Adults playing live rock music and kicking ass. Listen to Mickey Thomas he is RIDICULOUS. You will never see anything like this again so soak it in.
Actually, Tom Chaplin of Keane is every bit as good and also has that incredible range. Different kind of tunes, but for a male vocalist, just incredible.
Jefferson Starship is such a weird band. A couple of old ex-hippies, a guitarist who thinks he's in Whitesnake, and a "lite rock" lead singer....and yet it works.
I saw Jefferson Starship a few years ago they played this song and Mickey Thomas's voice sounds exactly like it does in this video never lost a thing!!!
I remember seeing this when it aired. It always stayed with me how good it was. I really liked this song and this was a great performance. Plus I really liked Fridays.
Craig Chaquiço is one of the most skilled guitarists in all the world. And to think he started playing for Starship at only 16. I really love his solo stuff. Pure joy! 💞
My son has taken after singing like I did in my 20s, he's in school choir and does solos and all of that. Just a few days ago I told him to pull this song up on Spotify. He'd never heard of this song so it was my duty to turn him onto another great song. I never knew Ansley Dunbar played on this song. That man played with everybody, he should be in the rock n roll hall of fame ffs. My son was blown away by Mickey's vocals. Next on the play list was "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop that Mickey sang on as well. Guy is an incredible singer. Grace Slick had great rock vocals as well and happened to write some killer songs herself. Totally deserved a long career in music.
There aren’t three seconds of this performance that are not spectacular. All musicians, of course Mickey, and especially Grace, who is uniquely embracing her role with stage presence, vibrancy and class.
Farther Guido Sarducci and Dawn ? What’s that...Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Vatican ? 😁 And Mickey Thomas ...dude sang “Fooled around and fell in love” in Elvin Bishop’s band too..hell of a voice.
I love this video. Everything about it. From the Father Sarducci to the last note of Mickey’s greatness. I used to watch this show as a kid and enjoyed the skits and music!! Saturday Night Live had been trying to gain ground with a new lineup at the time. The cast was great here!!
Clearly one of the best bands of all time and definitely one of the best songs of all time! What a great performance. Still love them after all these years.
She had left the band when Freedom At Point Zero came out, which is the album this song is on. That's why she's just doing a few harmonies and trying to not look out of place lol.
Steve Perry. I saw both. Jefferson Starship New Year’s Eve at the Cow palace 82-83. Dunbar twirling his sticks in between beets, Mickey in voice, Craig hitting every not as played on the album. The whole band was on fire! Then a year or so later at Day On The Green (Bill Graham Productions) I saw Journey. Steve came out and said, “We just got back from our world tour, and it’s so great to be back in the Bay Area, if you guys want us to play all night we will!” I kid not, they played for 3 and a half hours, and Steve hit every high and every low. Phenomenal show! I feel privileged to have seen SO much great rock and roll talent back in the 80’s. Perhaps Steve’s range was a little more dynamic? Either way both Steve and Mickey, equally great.
Wow! What a performance. I didn't expect to be as further wrapped up in it as each second passed through the whole song. Each person on that stage, including the cast when they got up there, was into just rocking out and feeling good about the moment.
I remember seeing this on tv when I was 11 yrs old; it made quite the impression, I never forgot it. I was surprised to find it here, great performance!
The very first time that I heard this song and checked the rock compilation album, I was astounded that it was Jefferson Starship but that was nothing compared the stellar Mickey Thomas, a fantastic song arrangement and blinding band performance. Still absolutely love to hear this live regularly.
I remember when this hit the rock radio stations in 1981. I was in my senior year of high school. I loved this one plus the similar track from these guys called "Find Your Way Back". Little did I know at the time that I was getting ready to take a ride on the best decade of rock music ever... The 80's! I am forever grateful I was at a perfect time in my life to enjoy it to the fullest too. Young kids today just have no idea!
I'm 34, Wet Hot American Summer brought me to this song and I'm glad it did. They sound just like the studio version playing it here, color me impressed.
At the end when the folks from the house band walked over to sing and jam along with the band was the best part. Those are the kind of spur of the moment happenings that make TV performances like this something special.
Mickey is in town here in Seattle for the next month or so doing some of the vocals for the stage play Rock Of Ages doing some Starship hits as well as everything else. May go check it out
On this day in 1983 {March 19th} Jefferson Starship performed "Jane" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand'... Four years earlier on 1979 it peaked at #14 on the Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart... It was the first release with Starship's new lead singer, Mickey Thomas... R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}...
WAIT! 😃 Who else spotted a pre-SNL KEVIN NEALON sitting stone faced in the audience zoom in after the song as the crowd applauds wildly?!! It looks like he’s wearing a black-n-white tuxedo shirt! He bookends SNL’s original 70’s member DON NOVELLO/Father Guido Sarducci who introduced the band. Talk about an acid trip! LOVE IT!
Real musicians playing real music, timeless.
Dunbar beating the snare drum like it owes him money.
Always loved him!!!!!
Mickey Thomas, one of the best rock singers ever!!!
definitely
Plus, he really nailed his parts on the cowbell! lol
amen under rated god
You ain’t lyin’!
Great vocals.. complete arrogant ass. Drunmer Ainsley Dunbar ran him off stage more than once for his bullshit.
Remember when people could actually sing and musicianship was a thing? Here is proof it once existed.
Amen, brother!
Heavy chunky loud band sound at the time- authentic like it should...
You know the song as soon as the intro starts - clasic
Do you remember when mainstream media pushed a bunch of crap and there’s still thousands upon thousand of great musicians that take nothing but a quick google search or Spotify browse?
These were the days that if you weren't good live you were booed off stage. You made your money on tour not in the studio. The quality of singers and musicians of that era were on another level.
Micky doesn't often make "the" list with Daltrey, Rogers, Plant.......but he should. The very definition of underrated.
And Steve Perry too.
Rogers Waters? And let us not forget Carol Burnett. Her and her "Tarzan" Impersonation. "Jane" knows.....
Better than all of them !
Amen
I believe its because he wasnt "edgy" enough and he was in a revolving door kinda band. (Starship changed and mutated for like 20+years) And finally, critics, in his last years, think he sold out and strayed away from Starship's roots.

My God! It would be hard to find a better rock vocalist than Mickey Thomas. His range is unbelievable.
graham bonnet
alan bullman Graham Bonnet has very little range. Every time I listen to him sing it sounds like he struggles to hit the notes. IMHO
Steve Perry
Love Mickey Thomas! Brad Delp and Lou Gramm are up there with him.
@Rodzilla as if vibrato were a bad thing.
His backbeat is SOLID
Why wasn't he this heavy duty in Journey??
@@woodykelleher9253 he was. Listen to the first three albums without Steve Perry. Also for reference the whitesnake album from 1987
@@patrickbourke2385 he is one of the best. Amazing drummer.
This performance surpassed pretty much every musical act on SNL from that same time period.
+seattlesharksfan This is from the show "Fridays".
When you vividly remember watching that as a 13 yr old and it’s as great as it was 43 yrs ago.
That's one power riff that never gets old. In fact, this song never ages.
That show was fantastic in so many ways. The bands always took it over the top. What an awesome time it was.
Damn. His voice is out of this world. No autotune or any special effects. Simply amazing.
Its recorded...obviously
It's amazing how well he could hit the high notes
I don’t care who you are, that was fucking awesome. Every one of them was precisely on point that’s a whole lot of talent there folks.
Damn, Mickey Thomas had a set of pipes.
I'll say, he's in amazing voice right here, Holy shit !
Had?... (not bashing please do not take it that way...your post was 10 years ago).... Love this fuckin group. As Jefferson airplane, as Jefferson starship, and as starship. They just made great music. Period
What an epic performance although it's live it sounds even better than the recording, awesome musicians and vocals... who's here during the Corona virus break of 2020? 😛
And 2021! lol
no, here during the vaccine apocalpyse of 2021
Love JS!
All I gotta say on the other is "2 weeks to flatten the curve!".
Holy Smokes! How amazing this is! WOW! Adults playing live rock music and kicking ass. Listen to Mickey Thomas he is RIDICULOUS. You will never see anything like this again so soak it in.
No doubt! Listen to Ansley laying it down, too.
Aynsley is one of my all time favs! Whitesnake to Frank Zappa, Journey...Amazing!
Amen brother
Actually, Tom Chaplin of Keane is every bit as good and also has that incredible range. Different kind of tunes, but for a male vocalist, just incredible.
Jefferson Starship is such a weird band. A couple of old ex-hippies, a guitarist who thinks he's in Whitesnake, and a "lite rock" lead singer....and yet it works.
That is a heck of a live performance. It is impressive to have a band that good, that on, and recorded so well for something pure live.
I think that I liked Friday's more than SNL at this time frame
Craig Chaquiço is one of the most skilled guitarists in all the world. And to think he started playing for Starship at only 16. I really love his solo stuff. Pure joy! 💞
Man. That was tight. And Craig’s solo freakin’ jumps right in your face. Great mix.
Absolutely outstanding!
My son has taken after singing like I did in my 20s, he's in school choir and does solos and all of that. Just a few days ago I told him to pull this song up on Spotify. To be able to do that live, blows my mind.
sound like the record. These guys were way better than the Airplane ever was
Friday's was such a great show with awesome musical guests to bad it didn't last.
Jefferson Starship was one of the coolest bands of the 70's, RIP Mr. Kantner !!
Craig Chaquico's solo is fucking amazing!
He knew how to crank for sure...
Love this Song!! ❤️😍🎵🎶🎧🎸
Amazing vocals by Mickey Thomas!
The guitar solo and riffs at the end were epic!
Happy 80th Grace Slick. Great vocals from Mickey Thomas.
Great live version. You can really see Paul and Craigs guitar parts. Helped me piece together the bridge and solo.
Very strong and I would have to say the best line up of Jefferson Starship. Dunbar is always sweet on drums. This is a very sharp version of Jane!
There aren’t three seconds of this performance that are not spectacular. All musicians, of course Mickey, and especially Grace, who is uniquely embracing her role with stage presence, vibrancy and class.
In other words, she's got nothing to do...
😂@@matthewh.9544
I'm a long-time drummer and Dunbar fan. The lick he does at 3:54 is wicked -cool. I've never heard any other drummer play a lick like that. Badass!

Young Kevin Nealon....

From that interval where the 70s spilled over into the 80s
Yep for sure, you nailed it.
I love this era of rock.
40 years later...that's still sounds great!
Aynsley Dunbar (former Journey & future Whitesnake) on the kit!! Wow!!!
Mickey Thomas…one of the greats! He is singing this live and it sounds like a recording. I don’t see this ever, in current times. I hate auto tune.
That version of the band was by far the best version.
‘81 was a great year for Jefferson Starship with ‘Modern Times’ getting released.
even after 41 years this song is so freshly squeezed

FLETCH LIVES!
Aynsley Dunbar - Geez is there anybody that guy has not played with?
He played in my group at one mate. I had him, a bloke named Ronnie on bass and a prancing poppet called Rod on vocals at one time.
Journey - tick, whitesnake - tick etc..
He didn't play with the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation. Never mind. He did.
I'm glad he always landed on his feet. One of my favorite drummers!
The sound of drum mix here is great.
Farther Guido Sarducci and Dawn ? What’s that...Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Vatican ? 😁
And Mickey Thomas ...dude sang “Fooled around and fell in love” in Elvin Bishop’s band too..hell of a voice.
Father Guido Sarducci !!

I remember seeing this the night it aired and recorded it with my tape recorder. I think I sweated through my pajamas!
Like how the back up singers jumped in and everybody was on board.
I thought it was cast members. I said, where did all these people come from? Go away; I just want to hear Mickey sing. 😄
Introduction to Paul Kantner @ 0:48.Condolences to Grace Slick and China Kantner. RIP Paul Kantner.
Very funny show. I remember seeing this. I was also glad to see the Jefferson Starship two years later. Fun times, good music.
Hard to believe that a few years later these rockin MFers would release we built this city..
Clearly one of the best bands of all time and definitely one of the best songs of all time! What a great performance. Still love them after all these years.
60s 70s AND 80s this band adjusted perfectly and went hard all three decades.
Grace Slick is amazing
She had left the band when Freedom At Point Zero came out, which is the album this song is on. That's why she's just doing a few harmonies and trying to not look out of place lol.
@@1kindredspirit1 hey, best efforts. I don’t fault her in this performance

Cool.....One of Jefferson's all time best!
I never missed a “Friday’s” ...the music was so good ....even The Clash came on this show!
Thank you for sharing. This lineup was the first rock concert I ever attended.
"Fridays" was a GREAT show! I hadn't seen it since it was on the air. That was before VCRs and DVRs. Hard to believe it was 30+ years ago!!
Uhmm.. We had VCR's. I have most of the FRIDAYS shows on VHS and BETA.
Aynsley Dunbar breathing fire back there....One of rock's greatest drummers!!
Wow!! Jefferson Starship performs " Jane", live on "Fridays";1981
I remember SNL in the 70's. I wish I was home then to see this. I was probably out running around
This is beyond epic. Grace Slick is the most iconic female vocalist ever. Mickey Thomas rocks
Damn! That voice.... amazing.
Wow! What a performance. I didn't expect to be as further wrapped up in it as each second passed through the whole song. Each person on that stage, including the cast when they got up there, was into just rocking out and feeling good about the moment.

One of my favourite songs of all time , it never gets old for me ..... Absolutely brilliant.
I saw this when it originally aired. The show itself was “okay” funny but this was the highlight.
The very first time that I heard this song and checked the rock compilation album, I was astounded that it was Jefferson Starship but that was nothing compared the stellar Mickey Thomas, a fantastic song arrangement and blinding band performance. Still absolutely love to hear this live regularly.
4:17 - At this point, Mickey's thinking "Where did THEY come from?!"
That was pretty cool that some of the cast join the band.
So much coke blowing around...
Cool,Looks like they were having a blast.Great the cast got involved.Excellent song!
I gotta fever... And the only prescription is MORE COWBELL
And that's all that you have to say about it? You're an idiot.
Oooo you told me
Anthony Cross That shit NEVER gets old, and THAT'S A FACT! 👍
Bettina obviously don't get the reference do ya'?
Ted Agens Well since that's a reference to Saturday Night Live and this was broadcast on Fridays it doesn't really make since.
Listen to those highs!! Mickey totally ruls on this. Love it, love it, love it.
Aynsley has played for all the biggest rock bands of the era.
Adoro essa Banda🇧🇷
Perfect rendition
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Grace Slick was smokin' hot! Such a gorgeous woman!!!
GREAT MEMORIES! LOVED FRIDAYS, FOR BRINGING GOOD HARD ROCK BANDS IN
I remember it well. Too bad it lasted only a few seasons and never caught on like SNL.
Oh look. Real musicians that actually play live instead of syncing with their own backing tracks lol. Remember when that wasn't uncommon? Lol.
Chaquico's solo is one of the rock greatest ever
I remember when this hit the rock radio stations in 1981. I was in my senior year of high school. I loved this one plus the similar track from these guys called "Find Your Way Back". Father Guido Sarduchi what a trip. Great performance by the starship.
