Jan 2, 2020: I dedicate this song to Sgt Manuel R. Martinez of Albuquerque, who was killed in an auto accident south of Santa Fe on Aug 22, 1975. He was a proud Marine with a shy grin, a warm heart, gentle spirit and a strong work ethic. Manuel was returning to the city after a long work week at the Farmington mines, when he rolled his 240Z Datsun. He trained at Camp Pendleton and served a year in Okinawa. He was my first boyfriend, but I knew that I loved him by the time I was 18. (My mother didn't like him and kept us apart most of the time. His death was a devastating blow that led to a nervous breakdown.) I will always love you Manuel, KATRINA *For God did not send His Son Jesus to condemn the world but to save it. John 3:17
I was on Okinawa 1974 to 1975. I knew a Sgt Martinez. When did he rotate back to the States? The Martinez I knew I lost track of him. I was transferred to Camp LeJeune, NC, the Martinez I knew, was transferred to Camp Pendleton. Do you know what base he was on in Okinawa?, Camp Foster, Camp Hansen, Camp Courtney. I know Martinez is a common name. Most likely it's not the same Marine. Just curious. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant
@@usmc-veteran73-77 Thanks very much for your reply. My mother forced me to burn his letters so I don't have the info you requested. I believe Manuel served from 1970-1974, because he returned to Albuquerque in the summer of '74. I enlisted in the Army to get away from my crazy mother at the same time. It broke his heart, even though I was later able to get assigned to White Sands Missile Range in Alamogordo. Though we were able to see one another every few weeks, the damage had been done. I made the mistake of continuing to confide in her, not realizing how controlling, manipulative and unforgiving she continues to be. My son Troy, 23, will be leaving for the Navy, leaving me stranded in Clovis, New Mexico without transportation. Honestly, burning those letters became a bad omen for me. Tragedy and misfortune have followed me ever since, simply because I was too afraid to express myself and set boundaries. In some ways, I blame myself for the accident. SEMPER FI
This song is as good as it gets. It takes us all back to a time when we thought we were immortal with our whole life ahead of us. Adventure and a sense of wonderment was in front of us, we lived in a musical time than can never be matched. I say that made us Damn lucky!!!
@ Susan Corbridge I agree. "Miracles" is sexy, not vulgar. Much of today's music is vulgar, not sexy. Balin could say what we are all thinking and feeling without being vulgar. Just pure romanticism.
@@sciencefriction315 in the 70's the music was written to allow the one who was listening to imagine his own meaning to the lyrics. Today's music blunt and vulgar
Insanely romantic yet suggestive in the best way possible, love the sax riff and Marty's voice rising with the crescendo! Magic in its best perfect form- Marty style 💕
Beautiful! 69 years young when listening to this! In college from 73 to 77 and driving home enjoyed this in the car radio! Great times, even when by myself.....as long as I had the radio on! Lol
Marty's songs were always my favorite Jefferson songs - Miracles, Runaway, With Your Love...Very romantic and poetic songs. This type of music will never be created again.
I thought optimism, hope and miracles were the 1960's...the 1970's were waking up from the hangover of the 60's and were mired in despair and self-centeredness...or was that the 80's?
@@teflonmagnet Even though we went from a country that does for Americans (death of Kennedy) to selling Americans out (Lewis Powell memo-"that union money is ours") Being a millionaire wasn't good enough for the psychos at the top. We clung to hope for the sake of everyone else. You're welcome.
Im 65 yrs old and one of my favorite too. Memories of returning from Okinawa after 13 months. I was at Camp LeJeune North Carolina and called my girlfriend one night. She wanted to break up, I was heartbroken. I wanted to just quit the Marine Corps and go home. But I stuck with it made Sergeant and almost stayed in. But I got out, dated a lot. Fell in love and on 21 Mar 21, I will celebrate my 40th Wedding Anniversary, and still in love.
I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this song. I was 13 in 1975 and visiting my friend at her babysitting job. She told me I had to hear this song on the new record they’d just gotten. We just stared at each other kinda slack jawed when it played. The feeling ..it was so different and incredible… and it’s never gotten old.
Lost track of my high school love and found her on the other coast 17 years later. We danced the night away in each other's arms to this song. Continued to see each other for six years (although thousands of miles apart), but lost touch 30 years ago. Long story. Now over 70. Never have forgotten the miracle that unfolded in my life all those years ago . . .
Had a similar experience Yellowstone...my first true real love, but she left college in the fall of 75. Got to meet up with her again in 1998 but neither of us were in a place where we could get together again. We spent the night walking, talking and kissing. Haven't seen her since.....but I hear this song and it takes me back to those days in 1975 when my heart burned for her!
*sigh* your comments give me goosebumps. same thing here ... he contacted me last year after 27 years. found me on LinkedIn. talked for two months and then left me for the second time. nothing can compare to those times.
I don't like being melancholy but at 67 these memories leave a void in my being. Like Grace said "Go forward if you have to go" but it still is sweetly painful.
This particular song takes me way back when I was younger man hanging out with my brother's ray and Joe bought this album played it at Joe's apartment fantastic feeling's everytime I'm 64 now and still enjoying life 2023
If you single out every instrument and how it all comes together in this song it really is a complex masterpiece. It would be a tough song to cover accurately
I miss the 70s to it was just a beautiful time everything was just beautiful now it's all screwed up I'm going back to work I'm 63 going back to driving a truck to get me some land out of the country and build me a house a mile high somewhere and get the hell out of the city and bring the 70s back out there I'm going to plant flowers everywhere flowers are so beautiful flower power hell yeah

Marty actually played Miracles at my Dad's second marriage/wedding to Marty's mother-in-law. It was pretty funny when he had to ad lib out of the "going down on you" lyrics in a southern church.

I was "in love" with a boy named Matt LoGrande in 8th grade. He was popular and didn't know I existed, but I was convinced this song was "our" song! It was about our eternal love! I wore the vinyl out. Yes, I was all of 12-13. Good memories, thank you, Marty, and RIP.
7 minutes of ecstasy.... would give anything to have seen/see you live in concert Marty, and esp performing this song. If quintessential perfection can be a thing, this is it. A masterpiece by a master singer/songwriter. RIP - hope you're getting to "exist on the stars" and looking down on all of us and smiling, knowing that we are still listening to your angelic voice and musical genius...and missing you very much.
Great song - 1975! Every time I hear this song it reminds of my neighbor friend David a couple houses down that was just out of high school - 19 years old - worked (2) jobs as a welder. He had a 1969 Chevy Chevelle for drag racing that rattled your windows when coming down the street and a work car. He was coming home from work late with another friend and got into an argument with another driver and they pulled over to fight behind a bar and the other guy had a gun and shot my neighbor who died and his friend was shot in the foot. I was only 15 at the time and I did not want to accept what happened to him for we had a lot of good times earlier and his life was gone at 19. His dad one time let him buy a chopper motorcycle in pieces only for his dad didn't think he would ever get it together. It was better than new like an Easy Ride bike too. Believe in Miracles!

A time when we felt alive & free our whole life ahead of us. Now that we see our friends that we grew up with passing away makes me feel very old & tired.
@@kimberlywertz3839 Me too
Alana & Kimberly -- I don't feel old, instead I feel blessed and appreciative that something soars in me when I listen to music I love. Miracles will always be on my playlist. I am still here to enjoy it. A couple of years ago I was in a restaurant in San Diego with a jukebox. The young waitress asked me if I had chosen all of the music playing. When I responded yes she exclaimed "I love everything you played." Music is the bridge to communicate with each other and look into our own souls. Peace & 💘
@@Vlggrngrl I myself know a lady about 20 years younger than me--one night while she was tending bar, she gave me 5 one dollar bills, telling me that she wanted me to play some tunes on the jukebox. I had just recently arrived, and hadn't had a chance to feed the box yet. "I like the songs you play," she told me. I told her, "the first tunes are gonna be for Jeff." He was the owner, who had recently passed. I played some Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, (Child In Time was a favorite of Jeff's) then played what I wanted, after putting in another $5.
SEMPER FI
You will see him again one day soon. May He Rest in Glory with The Lord Jesus Christ 🙏

One of my top 3 favorite male singers of all time! Miss you so much, Marty Balin!
This song is as good as it gets. It takes us all back to a time when we thought we were immortal with our whole life ahead of us. Adventure and a sense of wonderment was in front of us, we lived in a musical time than can never be matched. I say that made us Damn lucky!!!
You are so right in everything you said. It was an amazing time with no worries.....just the greatest music ever.

It keeps me alive - I mix it with the new - but this music expressed our greatest heights and depths in unity.
Yes we certainly did👍
What's Up with the Polar Bear I.D.?
Miracles is the sexiest, most romantic song ever written. Hate when they edit it.
@ Susan Corbridge I agree. "Miracles" is sexy, not vulgar. Much of today's music is vulgar, not sexy. Balin could say what we are all thinking and feeling without being vulgar. Just pure romanticism.
I won't disagree. It's a bit disjointed, but that's the way love is. So much going on it's hard to explain (both love and this song).

I was a the same age. I didn’t know what half of it meant. Very cool comment. I can’t imagine hearing it with a real girl the first time.
Pure. Unadulterated. Perfection. I could listen to this song forever. Miss you, Marty.

Lost track of my high school love and found her on the other coast 17 years later. We danced the night away in each other's arms to this song. Continued to see each other for six years (although thousands of miles apart), but lost touch 30 years ago. Long story. Now over 70. Never have forgotten the miracle that unfolded in my life all those years ago . . .
R.I.P Marty Balin thank you for the GREAT music
Thinking of my high school sweetheart too. Much the same story.
A memory worth savoring, Gary.
