    Micky Thomas' voice is so unbelievable. How he hits those high notes, I'll never understand. God-given talent for sure!

    • @drdre4397
      @drdre4397 3 года назад +17

      While some of it could be talent it has a lot more to do with decades of practice and discipline. No musician is born great... Yes some can be naturally gifted in composing or song writing. But you need to put many thankless hours into practicing so you can communicate those musical ideas in your head. To be able to think of something and play it/sing it instantly the way you were thinking of it takes years. Mickey Thomas has the notes in his range as he is a tenor, but to be able to hit them consistently and with good pitch was not a god given gift but years of hardwork. I only bring this up because Thousands of hours of hard work and discipline should not be swept under the rug of "Born with talent".

    • @davidr1676
      @davidr1676 2 года назад +4

      I remember liking these songs, still do, but maybe about 30 years ago I couldn't stand most vocalists (male) with such high pitch. It isn't any sort of "sexist" thing as much as it is a different approach in the music styles and somewhat the way the instruments might be played or tuned. Saw Kanter's Starship in summer 92 and I loved that. Jack was back, Pete Sears, Prarie Prince, and Papa John Creech with a lovely young lady on vocals instead of the great Grace Slick.

      He's criminally underrated. I think he gets blamed for Jefferson Starship / Starship "selling out," but he wasn't even in the band for 'Miracles' or anything else on Red Octopus, much less Jefferson Airplane. The blame, if there was any, should have been placed on the longer-term band members.

      rosey lo I must correct you here, but it's even better than you thought. Mickey Thomas back in that day had a minimum 4 octave vocal range, maybe 5. And he did it all with NO falsetto. It was pure, full head voice. Just like Steve Perry, Robert Plant, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Klaus Meine, and others. It makes these men's voices even that much more amazing to me. ☺

    In 1974 I saw them at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles the opening acts were a German group called Triamberence and Fleetwood Mac. it only cost $11.00 to get in I was on the floor right in front of the Stage. Grace Slick really turned me on. I was only 25 years old and had just come home from the Vietnam War.

    My wife was just in Cabo this past weekend (May 18th - May 21st) and there was a surprise performance going to be played at the Hilton she was staying at with a couple of her girl friends. They took a picture of this guy because they thought he looked like he might be part of whichever band was going to play, it turned out to be Mickey Thomas who was so humble and let them get pictures with him. That evening my wife was sending me videos from her phone of the performance and the Starship sounded AWESOME! Mickey can still hit those high notes and every song was fantastic! I wish I would have gone with her!

    this one stuck in my mind all morning! didn't even know who sung it or what it was. I suspected Starship, but very early 80s. They did keep up with the times well. And just heard it repetitively in my mind but now I know it was Jefferson Starship. the early 80s was always my favorite era of music. well grounded classic artists with modern instruments. but rock'n the HELL out of us, and not placid like the mid and late 80s! A great blend of both edgy guitars and synth, not sacrificing like later on!
