Prayers for you. My motherinlaw passed earlier this year from stage 4 lung cancer found to late and was in 80s, 3 weeks later her grandson passed from accidental overdose. In his early 30s. 3 or so years before her son died in his early 60s from cirrohsis complicated by covid. He was quarantined in a nursing home at the time. Several years before her husband passed from cancer in his 70s . Diagnosed in the late stages. Now my wife , her youngest daughter, had to be admitted in the hospital suddenly for perforated, abcessed, infected large colon. She's been out about 2 weeks now. There's always someone worse off than us. But it doesn't seem to help our own crisis. Hang in there. Durning this my sister's husband in his 70s was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and has a stoma. Radiation n chemo didn't work. To much on him. But he's trying a different treatment and seems better. Then she had a heart attack and had emergency quadruple bypass surgery. Home now. Seems better now.
okay the truth about Styx is J was a student at the Chicago University in the music department, and he formed the band Styx as a project that was given to him, it was in one of the magazines back in the day that was in the late seventies
It means more to me now at 50 yrs. young than it ever did and the song the great illusion. What are angels, what are inner dimensions/aliens? All the same, the beings telling me to be free of the Grand illusion we call the third dimensional reality!

Something I think that the general public takes for granted from their artists is that it take CONSIDERABLE talent and practice to be able to play an instrument and sing amazingly simultaneously and keep tempo. Regardless of how simple the piano arrangement might be, just trying to keep it in tempo while trying to sing your best and staying in pitch is insanely difficult.

Great song, which brings a lot of good memories from my youth. Time surely flies by... it seems yesterday, when I was a teenager listening to Styx. Now, I am a 58 yrs old father of three, and grandfather of five. Like it says in the Bible, Psalm 90: 10 (NRSV) 10 "The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away."
In 79 I was 19 and crusining William Street and just started hanging at the clubs. This was a great song then at 19 and still is for me at 62. Thanks God for the trip.
What a powerful and pleasant voice from the past. Just like artwork, people appreciate this musical talent more as time passes by. Indeed, we loved it then and even more so now as we took for granted the abundance of musical talents back in the late 70's , 80s and 90's that now is hard to match.

That song is so beautiful I remember my sis dancing to this with her boyfriend Joel in 79, she was so special to me , my entire world. I miss her . The songs just makes me sad.
When I graduated middle school in 2012, I listen to this song as we drove away from the building. I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt that moment was the death of my childhood and the beginning of my life as an adult. That the toys were put away from good. That I had to start thinking about college and what I wanted to do with my life. To be honest I haven’t figured it out yet. I could have been an engineer but I couldn’t keep up with college. I could have been making music but I don’t have the confidence to record anything yet. Right now I’m working a near dead end job hoping that things turn out for the best. We’ll see where life brings me….
When the Grand Illusion came out my sister and a couple friends went down to Chicago got tix and a hotel, saw the show, spent the night. I remember me and my brother being flabbergasted that our parents would let her do that, but the next morning the desk guy went around telling everyone that Styx was getting ready to check out/leave and where to be and my sister got a shot of Tommy Shaw he made circles of his thumb and pointer finger and held them up to his eyes to make "sunglasses" as she clicked the pic and he had this full length mink coat(!) and I think she got a shot of James Young as well.

They're all phenomenal too, and just as good if not better than DeYoung. But Dennis, he just has this warmth and this richness of tone to his voice, it's a sensation not unlike the warmth of a fire, in that it's incredibly powerful, but not as...shall I say...ferocious (???) as the others. Anyways, phenomenal, that's all that matters🤣

Wow, I never realized how incredibly loud they sounded back then. The guitars sound like they're turned up a bit too loud. Keep in mind, I was 16 when I saw this show live in Madison Square Garden and I don't remember the volume except JY had a guitar solo section and was talking to the audience about how he had to turn down when at home with his parents. Now he's in MSG and no one to tell him to turn down. He then rips into a guitar solo at a volume and distortion level that just melted your ears.

The almost almighty power chord
Love that feedback
I Just saw Styx at Jones Beach this past Sunday and what a show! This song was one of the greatest live songs I have ever heard and I have been going to shows since 1974! Bought tears to my eyes.
As an old retired sailor this one moves me.
