Not only am I greatly impressed with Dennis' great voice, but I don't know of any more recognizable and awesome combination of voices than a Styx chorus 🙂
I am one who believes the greatest musicians can.do a variety of music. This song is a classic and Dennis DeYoung should get the credit for his contribution here. I’m equally thankful for Tommy Shaw and his brilliance in this song and others which Styx did. I’m glad they collaborated to make some of the best music in my memory. Without both, we would not have the music we love. Different tastes, different styles can come together in unity for something great.
Sounds weird acoustic. This song is engraved in our brains as an amplified rock tune. Just sounds empty. I think the problem is the drummer is overplaying. Hes playing the same notes per usual but with a street kit. He should lay back and keep it simple as there is no reverb or distortion to match intensity. I know who Todd Sucherman is. Great drummer, just missed the mark on this one maybe.
Reasons I like this better than the studio version: 1) Denni's voice is warmer 2) The bridge of the song without the funky space sounds is oozing with awesomeness.
I remember Tommy coming over to the house when he used to live in Montgomery. Him and my paw paw would go down the garage and talk music all day and have a cold Beer
I remember watching these guys when I was 17. Their from my home town Palos hills Il. They played our high school. They wanted to experiment with piro techniques, they lit a cherry bomb off and they had to evacuate the gym. My friends and I would go to a place called Walters Barn. A horse riding stable. They were set up there and we would get high and drink beer. They had a crappy old piano and home made amps. I remember the first time they practiced,"Lady". PS. Wikipedia says they are from the east side of chicago. They are not.
South Side!!! Roseland! Where I was born! Dennis lived and grew up literally next to my Aunt Anne. When he started the band with the Panozzo bros, he played *accordion*!!! lmao. Can you *imagine*??! Great story dude. Sounds like them. lmao
. I grew up in Tinley Park in the mid 1980's... What a great story... my best friend lived in Palos Heights, not far from Palos Hills... I had no idea these rock legends were right there in the land of suburbia outside Chicago. Amazing story. All the great artists are from the mid-west... Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna... if they aren't from Illinois, where are they from? Great story. =M=

And DDY simps of course always react like this. Thus, why they are incapable of realizing that THEY AND DDY ARE ONLY ARROGANT AND PETTY ONES. No other band member or band. You guys just refuse to let the past go and harp incessantly on your "DDY IS SOOO AMAZING AND ANYONE ELSE IS TERRIBLE IF THEY'RE IN THE BAND WITHOUT HIM". Clearly, none of you ever gained maturity, rationale, or the ability to realize that nobody gives a damn about your feelings, and that you could spend your free time on much more logical, useful things, than constantly spewing your venom toward Styx without Dennis, and those who love all iterations of the band.
I can sense the animosity with the other band members in this video. I saw a recent live video of this song with the current Styx line up and their DeYoung sound-a-like wasn't up to it. Every time the camera panned on on James Young, this creepy smile would come across his face and he would gently nod his head up and down, like he was about to go show a 20 year old his 1980 Corvette. I think Dennis is probably better off without them. How many hit's have they had since Dennis' departure? I think it's around zero....
and how many hits has dennis de whineyboy had? i think zero...no, i know zero...granted, gowan doesn't have as powerful of a voice but they still have fun and sell out huge arenas...de whineyboy can't fill a county fair venue...styx is better off without him...the reason no hits is that they simply ran their course...but the old hits never die...dennis had his chance and chose to pack up his toys and go home...and styx said, 0okie dokey, LATER!
I see the deflecting reality with you is strong. Well done. This whole animosity thing is because of Dennis. One man and excessive amounts of egotism creates a Dennis DeYoung, sadly.
i was like that 2 til, i auctully got used to gowans vocals, i like gowans version better now and todd plays better than john on the regeneration version
@@pastorpaulfbc Nope. Chuck is the Bassist, and has always been. He's currently assumed Tour Manager as well for them, while Ricky Phillips also plays bass, and is their primary bassist (usually Chucky only comes out for one to three songs each concert). The one you're likely thinking of is John. John Panozzo, the brother of Chuck.
DDY does sing it beautifully, so does Lawrence Gowan. DDY left, STYX needed a keyboard singer and they hired Larry. Don't blame anyone, they all made their choices.
They kicked Dennis out of Styx. And to this day J.Y still says negative things about Dennis who never responds to any of it. Amazing, Dennis still hopes to do one more concert with them before someone passes away.
Incorrect : IN 1999 DDY was having medical issues due to an illness, this made his eyes light sensitive and he was having fatigue issues. He asked the rest of the band to give him 6 months to recover as doctors recommended wearing sunglasses and getting lots of rest. He just couldn't commit to a grueling tour of over 100 shows. A hugh STYX fan recommended Lawrence Gowen, and it wasn't very long that they got together and Dennis was replaced.
Dennis said in an interview about the writing of the song that it was originally intended to be only about angels, but then JY said, "What if they weren't angels? What if they were...ALIENS" So you can credit (or blame, depending on your point of view) JY for that bit.
Hmmm, looking at their eyes & expressions on their faces, the whole vibe is wrong...glad DD is no longer with them. Todd, not known he'd been there that long, wow! 👍
Fucking prick. Quit trolling and go write a song that has sold millions, This lead sing has written 8 top 10 hits and sold over 50 million records. You are just a hack that hasn't ever written any song and couldn't even get your mother to applaud your sorry ass. Troll!
Golden voice. Pitch, tone, vibrato, clarity, range....
This is incredible. Just reinforces what an amazing voice Dennis has.
Tommy has an incredible voice too. So much talent in Styx
Completely agree
Shame they all couldn't agree on things and had to split up.
No autotune needed here!!
He and Tommy remind me of Stevie/Lindsay, Layne/Jerry, etc. A few bands w/ 2 killers
Dennis Deyoung and Freddie mercury two of the best vocalists of all time that were made to perform with the piano
Little Richard
Elton John
Billy Joel
Jerry Lee Lewis
Stevie Wonder
Ray Charles
Throw in Steve Perry and I'll agree
Not only am I greatly impressed with Dennis' great voice, but I don't know of any more recognizable and awesome combination of voices than a Styx chorus 🙂
WOW! Dennis sounds amazing! He gets better with age. He's an incredible talent, intelligent, humorous and loyal.
Styx is one of my favorite bands of all time.
Grew up with this band and song...Those 4 ppl up front are history's finest in music..
4 people? Todd Sucherman is arguably the best rock drummer in the world. Modern Drummer first recognized him as such 12 years ago.
No matter how it's done, these guys play it EPICALLY.

How anyone could 'dislike' this, I am completely unaware.
I Saw Them in Concert, Years Ago, and The Show, Sounded Like it was Unrehearsed, only One Sound Check
Singing this at the piano with my childhood friend… truly one of my happiest memories
Reasons I like this better than the studio version:
1) Denni's voice is warmer
2) The bridge of the song without the funky space sounds is oozing with awesomeness.
I do like the space sound though
My three favorite songs - "Come Sail Away", "Wheel in the Sky," and "Amazing Grace". Three epic songs for all times.
Such a unique and wonderful song and group
Wow!!! All so amazingly talented!! Think they were at the peak of their talent there.
Who are the 8 people who don't like this video???!!!! Freakin classic!!!!!
SoCal7147 that’s new singer. He made 8 accounts just to hate on this
Just Amazing talent. Styx Classic!!!!.
I had forgotten just how much I love this band!
Amazing voice! 👌👍🎤🎵🎶🎼
Omg, I seen this amazing Band in Detroit Mich. in the 80’s.
Years later and yet his voice and talent of the piano Wow I felt this song ! Styx awesome Beyond WORDS❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
classic ending to a great song
"I thought that they were angels but to my surprise. We climbed aboard their starship, we headed for the skies"
Thanks for posting this! Classic! What a voice!
Still listening here in Ireland, 2022. classic.
Marvellous performances !
Incredible version. Thank you! Thank you very much!
Dennis your the BEST
Saw these guys the first time in 1980 in Baton Rouge.
Styx-The fathers of the power Ballard. I love Rock Ballards as much as heavy metal rock. 😀

This proves that without Dennis DeYoung there is No Styx
He and Tommy Shaw are both off the charts.
Styx as most 40 year old bands , did not survive in its original form. But are still rocking in paradise!! Go see for yourself!!
Only Dennis DeYoung should EVER sing this. Do you hear me, "styx"?

Eric Cartman?
Dennis Deyoung IS Styx. What a shame they can't reconcile their differences. Ditto with Journey and Steve Perry. Such is rock n roll...
The best line up by far. The new version is good but will never hold a candle to the band with Dennis. Shame about the old ego.
Dennis "The Old Ego" DeYoung is his legal name

His voice sounds like Freddie Mercury ❤
This group is best in its whole they need to reunite with Todd @ the drums time is fading fast
I could not agree more and I have played many of their songs with great bands, I play keys.
After 1996(?), before 1999. Styx in their pinnacle form.
Awesome😀
cool !!!!
Sorry Styx, not the same without Dennis.
SoCal7147 You're right. They're better.

whatta joke...better without dennis lol
You're in the minority. Yeah I'm sure in your twisted mind, Journey is better without Steve Perry!!!!!
No unlike you I know the bands are better with the original singers
Early Styx was my favorite, as was early Journey.
Now what? ;)
WOW!
happy BD Dennis : )

JY looks about as comfortable with an acoustic as Ted Nugent does!
Top
Dennis is the US version of Freddie Mercury
You have to admit, they managed to find a pretty damn good replacement. Gowan kicks ass and has the piano chops too
Nope. He can play, yes, amazing keyboard chops... but... eck... he sounds a like Munchkin singing Dennis' songs. Sorry.

Missed opportunity for Dennis to play the harpsichord here
Had to be more than 13 years ago. Would be nice to know the actual year. Like Dennis but Gowan is a better fit.
Annnnnd why aren't they in the Rock and Roll hall of fame again?????
