Not the best quality but the only document of Styx during the Paradise Theater tour and still a tremendous show with a highly electric and energetic crowd. There is not much video of Styx during their heyday and the only video of Styx from the 70s is from the Winter Garden Theatre in San Francisco during the 1976 Equinox tour and again during the 1977/78 tour for their breakthrough album The Grand Illusion. Check out a clip here:

• Styx - Fooling Yoursel...
- Preceding the song James "JY" Young shows up his under-rated guitar skills with a killer solo. The crowd is absolutely electric!
This video displays his outstanding guitar skills but he also does a fine vocal job and the overall performance of this song is really Styx at their best.

Mr Dilly has always been a..Huge Styx fan since the Beginning !!! Styx .. Still kicks Rock and Roll butt.. even in 2024 !!!! Styx Rules !!!👍🎸😎💪
Why they aren't in the Hall of Fame is a mystery to me.
Its because the HOF is a joke.. Green day??? They don't understand what good music is.
They’re in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
@@jumpinjojo 😳🥴🤔
No kidding! It's insanity!!!😢
And Foreigner. Hall of fame is a joke.
I was 16 in 1981 and Styx was on top,Now at 57 I’m trying to learn to play 12 string guitar (bucket list) like a Tommy on Crystal Ball ,thanks for all the good music over the years “STYX “
I used to call 'them' Mega-Bands!
I still can’t believe some labeled Styx as “bubble gum rock”. They kicked ass!
I have always loved this song especially when I was in the miss teen America competition in 79
You got my Vote! Where's yer Wig!? LOL Thx.
Pics or it didn't happen. 😉
Was at concert. Tickets were $8 and I was 5 feet from stage! The joints were flying!
Didya get some 'spit' onya? WooHoo!
Thanks for posting! Brings back memories of when you'd go to a concert for less than $20 a ticket, pass joints and wine bottles around, smoke a cigarette if you wanted to, toss big beach balls around and there was no violence in the crowd.
You know it. Best times of my life
manny_ nuff not for $22 they don’t
@manny_ nuff not for 20 dollars a ticket they don't
And most tix were General Admission SOOOOO if you got there 1st alot of time's you could get right by the stage......Life was good in the 70s & 80s......WHAT HAPPENED ?????
I can remember my first concert tic cost $5,:50-$6:50 in H.S. we could go see a couple concerts every month, oh yeah gad was ¢.48 a gallon @ the pump also, LOL truly the best of times !! 😏
James Young! He Made this MAGICAL!
I was in the audience that night, I was 15 and this was the first rock concert I went to
Lucky bastard.
I was just talking about that. I was 14 and I saved all my allowance money for VINYL!!!
I saw this tour believe April wine opened
I'd nickname Ya Lucky! 🤟🇺🇸💪
in the 79-80's, i dated Tommy Shaw's cuz'n, Cassandra, he was from Mont. Al... i'm was living in Prattville, it was Sooo Awesome!, sandy Creek wkends, open concerts!, Mothers Finest, all bands there!
What was great about Styx is they KILLED it live!!
And this was one of the best songs on that album.
Hardly. Come Sail Away, Fooling Yourself, Man in the Wilderness, Castle Walls are all better. I love this song. I love all songs on Grand illusion, but it definitely is not the highlight of this album
@@DonaldMains It's ALL an Illusion!
Brian is right on this one, dude. Just because songs like Come Sail Away get airplay doesn't always make them great.
@@scottsimmons7338 I don't judge songs based on airplay. I judge songs on how I like them. I stand by my opinion that while this is a great song, it is far from the best song on Grand illusion. Come Sail Away, Fooling Yourself, Man in the Wilderness, Castle Walls are all better.
James Young is a killer guitar player!
And the dude had a great stage presence hahaa awesome song !
@@poom641 Hellz YEAH!
One of the greatest bands live period.
Been a fan since 1973 and still am.
That was awesome!
Favorite Styx Song.
My second favorite.
*Blue Collar Man* is my favorite...
In den 1980 er Jahren sah ich sie in Frankfurt in der Festhalle. Das war das beste Konzert überhaupt. Und der Sound war fast wie auf der Platte. Ganz große Klasse.
James Young, another underrated guitarist...
LIVE! BABY! ...
Down with a big time lifelong sticks fan James JY is still the man baby rock on brother Rock on
Let's get these kids in the HOF!
There is a current petition at Change.org search for Styx. Everybody please sign it!!!!
Saw them in Syracuse, awesome show. One of my all time favorite concerts. And I saw plenty working at the Spectrum in Philly.
Miss the Spectrum.
Anfang der 1980 er Jahre sah ich Styx in Frankfurt. Niemals mehr habe ich so ein sensationelles Konzert gesehen und gehört.
In Amsterdam gesehen, war Einfach Klasse !!
This is perfect for #Throwback #Thursday...
JY is still one of the most underrated guitarists- ever.
It amazes me how so many people who have heard the more popular Styx tunes, still never have heard- this one...
How could nobody not have heard this Its on Grand illusion there best not 1 bad song it was 1977 and there still my favorite group today 2022
Jy will blow your doors off!
Love it!
Very talented band, very good song indeed, one of my favorites!
Go James GO!!!
LOVE THIS SONG¡¡¡¡¡¡
Happy birthday
Ah, back when Styx were Styx.
6:52 - JY sashaying his way to his bestie.
6:56 -- How hard Tommy is rockin' out beside JY literally shatters my heart to a million pieces because it's so adorable.
7:02 -- DDY's un-enthused pointing kills me.
7:05 -- The Synchronized March.
7:14 -- Once again, Tommy shatters my heart with his adorable actions.
I literally can't with JY and Tommy's friendship.
I want this kind of friendship.
Tess1061 ~ Hello again Tess. I love this. It was at the old Capital Center in Landover, Maryland, which is no longer there anymore. Then they came back on July 31st, 1981 to Baltimore.
hahaha. I love how we keep bumping into each other on these Styx videos.
I'm sure reading all of my comments back to back makes me look completely stalkerish. hahah
Tess1061 ~ Oh no, that's fine...😁😁🎶
It's nice to see someone who isn't so dazzled by DDY, & understands how music goes. Sometimes the classic rock bands have to make the hard decisions to let a member go, regardless who they are, if they want to continue on. Journey did the same thing. And granted, I'm not a huge Journey fan, because of all the slow, sappy material. Just like a lot of Dennis's bubblegum, teenybopper music, Steve Perry's slow material bored me to tears. Plus, I also don't like his (Perry's) vocals. He always sounded like he was crying & whinning to me. I like how you point out the obvious about Dennis. And I'm not saying that JY & Tommy don't have their problems, but it always had to be DDY's way or no way. He ran Styx into the ground with his cheesy concepts, and sappy pop music. Styx were such powerhouse rockers, before Dennis turned them into a pop, broadway, circus act. When you have three
singer/songwriters, everyone should have a say in an
album/CD's material, not just one person. I read how Dennis refused to allow the song
"These Are The Times" to be put on the "Brave New World" Lp. So Styx had to put it on "Cyclorama". And it's actually one of my favorites on that CD. I liked some of Dennis's music prior to "Cornerstone". Tracks like *Lady*
*Suite Madame Blue*, *Queen Of Spades* & a few others, were great. And Dennis *had* such a wonderful voice at one time. When I first found out that Styx had fired Dennis, I wasn't surprised by it. They've had so many problems with him over the years. And honestly, nor did I care, as it's JY & Tommy's music I like more anyway. And their last album/CD,
*The Mission* is
just superb! It is now my new favorite from Styx. If you are on Google+, I run a small Styx community called
💖 *Styx* ...Have a blessed day... 🎶🎵🎼☺
Everything you said is simply spot-on. And I love how you used Journey as an example, because had you not elaborated, my mind instantly went there, anyway. But additionally, look at Iron Maiden. Even they had to replace a guitarist and -- at one time -- Bruce left. But the cool thing about Iron Maiden -- when the guitarist wanted to come back, the band kept the replacement guitarist, while also taking on the original. Which to me, is awesome as shit. Not many bands can do that. ((but oh look, Styx can, cause they're awesome)).
Shit happens. And EVERY member of any band should be able to have a voice and put their *stamp* into an album. Period. It's a collective thing -- a group effort. Of course there will always be the "glue" members of every band. The ones that are slightly controlling or perfectionists. Just look at Aerosmith. Steven Tyler was a major perfectionist -- but y'know, he didn't do it to the point of driving the band and every member into the ground and removing their individuality.
There has to be a give and take -- with every member. And all egos have to be hung up at the door when they come together to create, which can be a very hard thing to do.
And to bounce around back to JY & Tommy. Every person has their faults, as you said. The difference being, Tommy and JY didn't let those faults hinder the band's growth or success. Whereas, Dennis did.
Tess1061 ~ you're right there. Being a perfectionist is one thing, but DDY was just controlling, and wanted everything his way. If you listen to the original
"Behind The Music" Styx episode, Dennis says,
"What I Provided for Styx was leadership, not control". It's that kind of mentality right there, that says everything about Dennis. As if Styx was his, to do what he wished.
The DDY crowd get on these feeds all the time, and tell lies , & half truths about Tommy, JY, and Styx in general. One of those lies is that, "Dennis started Styx". Well that's NOT true. The Panozzo brothers had already started the band, & initially had a 3rd person in place. But he went back to his school & lost interest. Dennis happened to hear them one day, liked what he heard, & asked if he could join. Since they needed a third person, they said yes. And the kicker is, Dennis didn't even play keyboards at the time, only the accordion. He learned the keyboards later. But the DDY people always credit him for starting Styx.
Another lie a specific person likes to tell on here, is that
"Both JY & Tommy were so drugged out, & that's why Dennis had to take the lead of the band. What a crock! While it's true that Tommy had a drug issue, it never infringed on his, or Styx's creative process. If you look at all (3) songwriters in & out of Styx, Tommy was the most productive person, with 10 Styx studio Lp's/CD's
(not including live & compilation CDs'), 5 solo Lp's/CDs', two CDs' with Jack Blades, and two Damn Yankees CD's. 19 in all.
You can't be that way if you were as druged out as the Dennis crowd claims.
To me, in the last years that Dennis was in Styx, he used the band as his personal side project when he didn't have anything else going for himself. At one time, in 1988, Tommy had come to DDY to talk about getting the band back together, but Dennis couldn't because he was waiting on MCA, & working on another solo Lp. Now if he gave a damn about Styx, he would have been the one who tried getting the band back together instead of Tommy. At that time, Tommy had been offered a guitarist position in Damn Yankees. Dennis had the nerve to ask TS to hold off in making his decision. Thank goodness Tommy instead, went ahead with it. Point I'm making is, Dennis always expected everyone in else to wait on him to decide weather or not he was available to start Styx up again. The other members wanted to get Styx back together, and or tour, many times, it was always DDY who hindered, held back, and stopped Styx from going forward after the "Kilroy..." disaster broke them up.
Lol J.Y is a hard ass rocker
My time in the Air Force. The memories!!
HERE ARE THE LYRICS FOR ALL TO ENJOY :
You were the apple of the public's eye
As you cut the ribbon at the local mall
A mirage for both you and us
How can it be real?
We love your body in that photograph,
Your home state sure must be proud
The queen of the United States,
Or have you lost your crown
Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love
Well are you really who we think you are
Or does that smile seem to wear you down
Is the girl who you once were screaming to jump out
And the dream that you must live,
A disease for which there is no cure
This roller coaster ride you're on
Won't stop to let you off
Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love
Miss America, Miss America, Miss America
Miss America, Miss America, Miss America
Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love
Well it's true just take a look
The cover sometimes makes the book
And the judges, do they ever ask
To read between your lines
And in your cage at the human zoo,
They all stop to look at you
Next year, what will you do
When you have been forgotten
Well aren't you Miss America
Don't you Miss America
Won't you Miss America
Our love
Miss America, Miss America, Miss America
Miss America, Miss America, Miss America
Miss America, Miss America, Miss America.......
Howdy's fortuitously unbearable
I memorized it already
✌️🤟❤
Great song. Always liked it.
2018 Kennewick, Wa. Benton/Franklyn fair, great show STYX
Hall Of Fame
Love the powder blue track suit that Tommy is wearing...lol.
I saw this show in Cleveland at the old Coliseum in Richfield and remember this solo. Nice trip down memory lane...what's left of it. :)
Pittsburgh Civic Arena. Great show.
That is a great guitar rift
AMERICA! Dammit!
I love the way they walked in musical steps great home grown band
Tommy is having a blast.
That's my band yes sir forever
Yewww!
..YEEUUUHHH...
I saw them in Phoenix, at Veterans Memorial Collosium during this tour.
Happy Independence Day Everyone (7/4/2019), rock on!...🎸🇺🇲🎉
JY's white jumpsuit with shoulder pads is hilarious.
Saw them January 18, 1980 at the Seattle center Colosseum at the foot of the space needle one of their first concerts of the 1980s James Young wore a blue jumpsuit that night with the same padded shoulder pads. I thought only chicks did the padded shoulder pad 80s thing?anyway I remember him singing this song and it definitely rocked as much as this. I was about 6 feet from the stage just before my 20th birthday they had canceled two straight shows in Portland so I finally just bought tickets to Seattle for their cornerstone tour.
Great solo and song !!
I always liked this song because it rocks and because of the satirical lyrics.
In your cage at the human zoo, they all stop to look at you, next year, what will you do when you have been forgotten?
I just thought those were such clever and cruel lyrics at the same time!
Satirical? It's reality.
Gandalf Shakur Well, not really. Models don’t live in Cages at the Zoo. But they do get judged by their looks and treated like Trophy wives to be collected. Then when they get Old, Men trade them in for younger Models just like a Car. That is a cruel reality. When they wake up and realize they were only valued for their looks, which have since faded. Not nice but it’s real.
My favorite song by Styx
Turn it up to 11
Tommy Shaw is a hoot
James Young is one of the members of Styx that obviously wanted to go in more of a Hard Rock direction along with Tommy Shaw so when the time came for a break they stuck together and dropped Dennis.D
@METAL HEALTH there is an interview with Shaw about being really tired of doing some of the roboto type stuff live and actually mentioned being afraid to perform such material in front of festival crowds for being booooed during it. The first solo record from Deyoung was terrible. Shaw left for DAMN Yankees and Yankees got paid $ 1mil to not produce a 3rd or 4th record cannot remember but the company was pushing grunge and didn't want it. So Styx reformed without Deyoung. Funny how they continue to sell out with Shaw and JY ?
What a mistake. No DDY. Now just a cover band.
Wow, I just read your comment and I didn't know until now that they are NOT R&R HOF members, which to me sounds like the single most ridiculous piece of bullshit I have EVER heard... So the people who have been reluctant to vote them in can all go and f--- themselves,,!!!
Saw this tour in Phoenix in feb 81'. They did like 130 shows that year, and were perfection. I think they played a couple hours straight w no opening act, but I might be wrong. Great show. Cheers!
These guys had the guts to release this song which I love by the way be true to your school as they say much kudos to em
Greatness!
Rest in Peace, John Panazzo.
For a second, I thought he was going to light the pickup on fire 🔥 and do Ace Frehleys gimmick.
But thankfully he stuck to the songs. I used to listen to Styx nonstop as a teenager and now looking back they had three good singers and songwriters. They were actually pretty damn good! I still like this song and Madame Blue and Come Sail Away!
The songs have held up and Tommy Shaw is a fantastic singer who shouldn’t play second fiddle to anyone.
I THINK I saw this yr same outfits & had them binocs rite on Tommy Shaw
Awesome!
My favorite guitarist ❤️
The Summit Houston, Texas 1977 Styx opened the show for Kiss ( One of the best concerts of the seventies ever)
Hmm I saw that tour in Chicago and the opener 4 kiss was Uriah heep
top performance
WHAAAT? Oh yeah!
One of my favorite songs ! Thanks for sharing.
Does JY's voice kind of remind anyone of the great Leon Russell? It does to me. 2 great voices. Would love to have heard them together. RIP LR.
Love the guitar work
GOD BLESS USA
The only other person I have seen totally own the guitar like that is Prince (rip). Weird but true ....
JY is the man
Another very uncomplementary song about America and how it thinks it is great,as well as their song,Sweet Madame Blue,or Springsteen's Born in the USA,or The Guess Who's American Woman or Young's Southern Man.Styx was always great live and I saw their Equinox,Paradise,Grand Illusion and Mr Robot tours when I was younger. The band was never the same though without Dennis DeYoung.
Remarquable Canada vous aiment Québec vous le dits
I can be on you tube as much as I DAMN well please!
Happy Birthday
😁he performed extremely well.

Great editing. thanks for posting. Is it me or does Shaw look like Napoleon Dynamite!?!
JY kind of has a James Hetfield vibe going on himself.
