  • In this video I share a recent closet clean out, tips on making decisions on what to keep and what to give away, and how different this clean out turned out to be. I just turned 60 and have been retired for almost a year. It was time to cleanup the closet and make space for clothes that fit my new life. However, I was in for a surprise, this closet clean out was like no other. It was actually cathartic! I expected to make decisions logically but it turned out to be all about how the clothes made me feel. If you are feeling stale and like you could use some inspiration and something new, this video might be for you! As always leave me a comment below if you have something to share.

You can take apart a suit and wear the trousers with a casual top and casual shoes; and wear the jacket with jeans! My one biggest purge when I retired was all my "prissy" blouses. Who needs all those office blouses with pearl buttons or bow tie necklines? Freedom!! Yay!!

I am 70. I just had major surgery to my right shoulder, and I am binge you-tube watching as I am immobile,. I am typing this left handed, so that indicates my sincerity! I found and love this video. Recently, I have struggled with getting rid of things that I don't need any more and trying to make decisions, and I cannot tell you how much your video has helped me more than the other 30+ I've watched. The comment especially, about how it makes you feel, because I have lots of clothes that I think I love: example - I love this black jacket but it doesn't quite fit so I can't wear it now, but one day I might ... LET IT GO! I love giving the expensive items to charity so that someone can give them another life! You rock!!! hugs!

I watched a utube video that said to take out your 10 favorite outfits. I did and was stunned to see I had a capsule wardrobe. They all seemed to be white, tan and cream. Then I kept things that fit and I liked that I could fit in to add color. I retired at 58 and now at 65, it seems I have done this a few times over the years. This video was still very good for me in validating decisions about what I got rid of which was a ton of stuff. It feels so good now. It just seems easier when you know whatever you grab out of your closet will fit and go with pretty much everything else. Loved this video because watching how she made great decisions and even allowed herself to change her mind.

I did this kind of cleanout after leaving the office. Some things that were really quite gorgeous and that I wore frequently and "couldn't do without" went immediately into the pile: "some working person will love this." But not me. I'm out of those constrains and now finding my legitimate style that must combine: Comfort + Beauty + Freedom.

Loved your video! These decisions are always so hard, but so rewarding in the end! I’ve recently finished updating my wardrobe. I’ve gone to all skirts and dresses, because I love them and am more comfortable in them. My implanted Spinal Cord Stimulator was placed right at where my jeans waistband was. I’ve put up with it for years, then a few months ago it dawned on me, hey , you don’t HAVE to wear pants and jeans! lol! Loved the trousers with the bird on it and the suede 70s jacket. I'm in my late 50s and went through a similar fase after being declared unfit to work after a serious illness. I had a closet of clothes that didn't fit my lifestyle anymore, I stopped colouring my hair and menopause happened; I totally lost my way in dressing myself. Slowly I found my new 'me' style and it's a lot more fun, quirky and bold than my previous style. And I'm feeling so much more myself now. I have no idea why this came up on my RUclips now when I actually retired two years ago but I'm so happy it did. I went through this process and there are so many similarities to the decisions you make. I was a little too conservative when I did it and over the last two years (having stepped down from a leadership position but fortunately exercising the option to continue to work part time with no obligation to go into the office) I've realized what I really do like now and what I should let go of. This video has motivated me to do one more sweep of my wardrobe and get rid of the things that no longer feel good or represent who I am. The great part is that I love clothes and enjoy evolving my style and it is clear you do too! Thanks for the guidelines they are spot on.

I did something similar earlier this year though I didn't count them. Just separated out the items I absolutely loved and felt good in every time I wore them, which was maybe 1/4 of my clothes, and put them aside. I then tried on every single article of clothing and every pr of shoes that I own ...outside of underwear and socks ...and asked myself do I love this as much as the items in my _love pile_ . I was suprised at how many things I had that I didn't even want to bother trying on. I brought those to the thrift store immediately before I could start 2nd guessing myself. Within a month my wardrobe was reduced by more than half, everything fits and I love getting dressed because every single item makes me feel good about myself. It also made it easier to really see what it was that I loved about each item and everything pops because nothing is crowded.

I don't know if my love pile would work for everyone but it helped me see some commonalities in my love pile that I missed when my closet was crammed - like almost every love item having pockets and certain types of waist treatments, e.g., high and a little loose. I also bought new hangers so I get that clothing store feel when I open up my closet but that's just me being "extra" lol

I’ve struggled with cleanouts over the last several years. Mostly, I would just remove things that didn’t fit me well any longer. I felt like I had so many things in my closet, but nothing too really put together for an outfit. Now I have retired fully, and moved to a new home I recently watched an influencer, a mature woman, who suggested getting rid of everything that was a large print, keeping primarily only neutrals and smallish prints that read like solids. It totally worked for me, because I realize that those prints were the things that were staying on the hangers day after day, week after week, year after year! I removed the visual chaos that those printed items created. Now with my neutral palette in my closet, I tend to shop for additional neutral items, or for colors that I love that work for me as an addition to the neutral items. Thanks for sharing this video in this new and exciting time for you!!

Instead of saying you want to look youthful, you could say modern or fresh instead. This is the first video of yours I've seen so maybe I missed something, but if you want to further decrease your wardrobe you might want to determine your best color palette. Love that shorter white blazer on you! Matched your energy. I could see your bird pants looking so cute with some sneakers and a top in one of the bird colors. Enjoy your retirement!

You know what is easier than doing going through each item? Just turn all the hangers (with clothes on them) around in the closet. Have them face backwards. When you wear an item put it back in the closet the normal way. Over time you can see what you wear and don't wear. Then it is easy to give away the item you don't wear. You don't have to decide on anything now and go down memory lane with each item. Over time you will see what you actually wear.

I got taken in by a bad deal before that and honestly I still don't know what I got into except that I ended up paying out of pocket for a lot! Changed as soon as I could. Then the rest I have will pair together naturally. Dress up or down. It's a big change for me went from a size 14-16 petite too 18-20 petite.the new items are so comfortable and go with all the other keep items. And I'm still sorting through the summer clothes and donating too friends . I've learned that casual flowing dresses are better in spring too fall and can be layered in winter. My teen girls I've helped throughout the years sure loved the over flow of clothes. And I've kepted all my turtle neck sweaters and cardigans that fit will gift the cream and black long cardigans because I'm a petite and they are a regular length. Now I just have too go throughout all shoes and boots. I just have too get the closet back together for quick outfits on the go. And I will keep up dating as needed.
