Hi! I'm only 41, but definitely struggling to avoid the middle age frump & figure out how to transition into mature, stylish, flattering clothing choices. As soon as I turned 40 I became very aware of how nice it is to look good without dressing like a 25 year old, lol! I appreciate the efforts to continue being stylish as we age. I feel like our society has just started slowly abandoning efforts to look halfway put together & is just looking sloppy. My grandmother worked hard to look as put together as she could even into her 70's and while I didn't appreciate it as a kid, I do now! I think it's important to our psychological health to keep caring for our outer appearance to some degree, weather we decide to follow trends or not. It just keeps us feeling good, which will improve our attitudes about everything else, too. So great job on keeping up with that! But, I have to say that the comments on this video are so overwhelmingly nasty! People getting all butt hurt & talking like a bunch of cranky, jealous teenagers! What's up with that!? We're all middle aged, we should be beyond that crap! If you don't like her video then go watch something else! Don't listen to that stuff Marnie! To everyone complaining & being salty: 1: Please don't be nasty. If you don't agree with the ideas presented, that's ok. These are just some ideas for possible outfit choices. We may dig all the ideas, we may not. There's no need to loudly and rudely complain and insult the creator. We're too old for middle school behavior. 2: Geez, I have never seen so many people so desperate to cling to their dern cardigans and capris! My goodness! I agree that capris are an outdated style, though they work well for some. That's ok! She's just making a suggestion! And there are trendy, flattering ways to wear summer/ warm weather styles without it being capris. I get it, I don't look great in shorts either but if you're sensitive about your capris maybe you're not happy with how you dress & it's time to try out some other styles. If not, just own your love for them. Let's be honest with ourselves and own our own insecurities & struggles & fashion taste. 3: Yes, life creeps in and changes things. I care for a now invalid mom, work 50 hrs a week, & fatigue, bad food choices, & heath issues have caused my 5'7 frame to go from a trim 140 lbs to a bulky, poochy in weird places 220. I am not totally happy with how I look. I sure as heck don't look as good as I used to & am fringing on frumpy. Losing a bit of weight would help me look and feel better for sure. I'm the first to admit I need to watch my weight. No shame in us admitting this. And using excuses only keeps us from improving ourselves. We won't ever look like a beautiful, thin 20 year old, and that's ok! We'll look like the mature classy ladies we are! But even with this weight gain & body change, I can work on my figure/ health (even if it's only a little) and still find stylish, flattering clothes and so can you. Not all these presented styles will work for you, and that's ok. Find something that does. There's no reason to be salty. 4: If you don't like where you are or how you look, work on changing things. Even small changes can make big differences. You are not stuck, I promise! When we constantly look for ways to improve what we don't like we will start to feel better and more confident and will be less bothered by the opinions of others.
Gurllll I agree about the comments. This attitude that we all need to look like models or KK with a perfect body walking the streets with tight really tight spanx or spandex with a bra is ok when your trying to sell your product and you have security with you is ok. School? Work? Maybe a maxi light easy jacket or cardigan lol over that may look better? I don’t like cardigans I tried but they don’t work for me. I didn’t want to complain trying to be helpful. Work with your natural beauty and give thought about who you are with strength and confidence that will help with what you are trying to pull off. We all know confidence helps you to look good too. How do you feel in your clothes? Does a certain piece cause you to stand up straight? To walk differently? I’m old and also used to model so just sharing some life experience.
Do you aware of knowing about a good RUclips channel to follow, I would be very appreciative. I’m having so much trouble with updating my wardrobe for many reasons. Weight change, where the weight sits, age appropriate, and coordination, with colour and type of shape.
I agree with you! I’m very surprised by the bitter, nasty remarks. No one is forcing anyone to change, but I would ask why were you watching in the first place? Wasn’t it to hear someone else’s thoughts about fashion other than your own? That’s why I’m watching.
The best advice in the video was the part where you said to stop worrying about what some lady told you to wear and go with what makes you happy. I think that's what we should all do.
I’m about to turn 55 and I wear whatever I want. I live in Florida where it’s hotter than hell all year round and makeup melts down your face, so why bother? I don’t wear 3/4 of the things I have in my closet, including using designer handbags. Just throw on a Bila dress with the big floral prints, flip flops, and a crossbody and you’re off. Priorities change as you age. Instead of investing in designer high-end trends that someone says will be out in two months, I’ll spend my money on quality art supplies, travel experiences, and buy things that have more meaning to me, like say a big chunky bracelet with a turquoise stone. 😂 I personally love thrifting or buying resale for my clothes.
agree with you, but I am in Finland where the makeup in winter freezes up and falls. and you need to have more coats and boots than weels in the year ... lol, totally agree with you
I love slim fitting 3/4 length sleeves, v-necks, and slim pants. These visually elongate my body and look polished and professional, casually chic, or sporty depending on the color combination. I'm a 70 year old engineer and am told I come across about 25 years younger. I'm only going for energetic and fit. The important thing is to figure out what makes us look "frumpy" and avoid that, which for me is short sleeves, patterns, capris, and sweaters.
@@divasurfer69 I just like covering my upper arms, I also bruise very easy so I have lots of bruises. The 3/4 helps with that without getting hot and bothered with a long sleeve.
My humble opinion, after stumbling across this video, is that we, as women are our own worse enemies. As I age, I’m just grateful that I have been allowed to grow older.
@@AlisMarsaili1351 i agree. Embrace your ageing process. Not everyone gets that privilege. All this wondering what is allowed or what is acceptable to people you do not even know, is energy draining and steels your peace
Marnie, normally I love your videos, but this one doesn't pass the vibe check. Hating on Chicos fashion that supports women in larger bodies than your own isn't the move. Did you consider that the majority of the women in your capri photo were overweight? Was it hot outside and society has convinced them they can't wear shorts? Or the 3/4 length shirts, did you try them on someone larger, because proportionally they can often look nice and again, are a cooler option. (Many women don't feel comfortable showing their upper arm or have been told it's not professional---of course only when you're above a certain weight). While I agree that dainty jewelry is more fashionable, smaller pieces can look swallowed on a larger person, and a chunky necklace can bring the attention up to someone's face. I would bet that most people choosing boxy clothing in unflattering colors likely didn't have a choice, by either size or price. Have you ever gone shopping with someone larger than a 14? As a larger person myself (5'10 18-ish depending on how much room for the bust), trying to find suits/workwear that don't have flowers as you described or animal print is difficult. As someone pointed out below, your leather gauchos break several of your rules but look adorable on you simply because you have an acceptable body to society and fashion designers. One has to ask themselves, is it flattering or is she just skinny? Most often the answer is the latter, even with people like Kendall Jenner and Zendaya and all the beautiful people in magazines. In the future it might be nice of you to work with the brands who pay you, such as Walmart, to have lines up to 5x (because that's really only a 2x because these types of influencer brand deals are usually junior sizing) and actually see clothes on different bodies. A quick exercise might be to go to Walmart and look at the differences between plus size clothing and straight sizes and ask yourself what percentage of those clothes would you CHOOSE to buy/wear. Then start the discussion as a brand ambassador.
This is not telling people what to wear, y'all chill. She's just discussing styles and cuts of clothing that are more/less flattering to the body. I see nothing wrong with that. I sometimes don't realize why I don't like something, and then someone says, "that really gives a boxy look or that gives the illusion that your legs are shorter" and I agree with them. I love that sort of tip.
I'm 58, frumpy, dumpy, and married. Have never paid much attention to fashion. I think it's sadly funny that the only guys who even remotely make passes at me, these days, are wistful, puffy, middle aged guys holding 12-packs, standing in line with me at the local Qwik Trip. It's so . . . toothless.
Many of us over 50 find ourselves dealing with serious arthritis issues and heels just aren't an option. I switched to chunky loafers and love them. I can get my arch supports in them too. Pair them with an ankle length pant and I think it looks youthful yet age appropriate.
Im 61 and just recently wore a small knit short cardigan open over a tank top with some (moderately) short shorts and cute walking shoes. Trust me, it looked really cute and I even received compliments from younger women. Sometimes, it's just the way you style something. 😉
I love them because having to roll up sleeves every single time I wash my hands or prepare food and snacks is tiresome! Having a toddler grandson at home means always washing up something.
3/4 inch sleeves hide the arm flappy flappy and I can still clean a spill or wash a dish. We don’t all have the same body. I wear a smile and clothes that is love. It increases my confidence.
Great suggestions for size 8-10 women of medium height. But I would like to see the ladies in that group picture you showed wearing your suggestions. Most of them were size 18-22. It does make a BIG difference.
I really like her positivity and how she includes herself. She isn't passing judgment in any way, just giving suggestions that some people might find helpful, yet people are still getting offended?! I actually really enjoyed her video!
I just turned 37🎉, I think FIT matters so much when it comes to looking frumpy. Knowing what suits your figure (height, proportions etc) is important for looking chic. You are so right about people holding onto the fashion of when they felt their best.
Agreed that fit matters. There was a show called "What Not To Wear" that emphasized that. Wearing clothes that show off your assets are key. I have a high waist so I'm loving the current high waist trend!
I just turned 68 & I'm owning my frumpiness. I have my own style but I study the style of other "old ladies." In my opinion, it's a thing to be admired. People write you off anyway once you're "old," so why not dress the way you want.
I agree! I am blessed with great skin (as was my mother and grandmother, and great grandmother), but I am short and overweight, so I look frumpy no matter what I wear. I am doing well trying to manage many health issues. I eat pretty well 90% of the time, do mild exercise, volunteer a bit, spend time with family and friends and feel blessed to be alive since I almost died 3 times. Fashion is the least of my worries!
Just because some of the morons of this world may write you off as you age doesn't mean that you should write yourself off. Self care and being attractive at any age feels good on the inside
@@serious7179 pretty happy to no longer be "attractive". We love ourselves, and others love us for our inside, not how physically appealing we are. Having a bright happy loving attitude is all you need to attract love.
@@looneygardener omg, you can love yourself regardless. We all express our self love differently. No need to cast stones by insinuating that women who actually care about how they look are somehow not showing self love because that makes no sense.
Ladies...wear what you feel beautiful in. Do not listen to anyone else and let their opinions make you feel not "cool" or old. If you have it and love it, wear it! Life is way too short to let someone you don't know dictate what you wear. She may have great ideas but there are NO rules! That goes for your hair also. Long, short, gray, colored, curly, straight. You do you! I am 54 and feel fabulous. I eat well, run, and just try to live life to it's fullest! Blessings to all you beautiful, uniquely created women ❤️
Whatever you are comfortable in, wear it. As an older woman, the least of my concerns is looking dumpy to "others". I am happy to look frumpy, as I am finally free of the agonizing stress of needing to feel "attractive" to others. But that's me.
Why did you watch the video then?make your own about not caring.Others want to LOOK good and fashionable.People Need these notes even to LOOK put together not like someone threw a couch cover over their back. Glad your happy let someone else's try.
@@scotty69D I was curious to see what the woman had to say. Should we only watch things we know we will agree with? Maybe I would have gotten good fashion info. I have an open mind. I certainly have nothing against other women's choices. They don't have to agree with mine. Do you insist everyone agree with you?
Clothing has an intimate relationship with a person's physical body and personal identity. It’s a language which tells a story about the person who wears it. It’s about being comfortable with YOURSELF , expressing YOUR personality, and translating self-esteem into personal style.
Marnie you did great. I'm 5'8" and 223 pounds, 57 year old. I'm actually pretty secure in my body, but sometimes I see myself in pictures and think, " Hmmm... I need to work on my clothes." Of course, I need to work on my health and weight as well. But your video made me excited to get a few new pieces for my closet. I definitely tend to buy "bigger" clothes so I can hide. You've inspired me to try to switch things up a bit.
No woman wants to look frumpy…that’s a fact. But, as a plus sized (18/20) woman of 57…I think the clothing and especially shoe industries need to hear our voices. Why aren’t affordable 44D bras pretty? Why aren’t shoes that help those with plantar fasciitis comfy and cute?? Many of us need comfort over 50…that should not have to mean frumpy. I think 3/4 sleeves and capris are a preference…not a trend. The best accessories are a smile and a positive attitude…that’s what people will remember!
Couldn't agree more. If it's 90° outside and you don't look great in a regular short then capris are the only other option, in my opinion. Those shoes with the shorter length pants looks hideous. I'm sorry but I don't show my crepe, sagging arms in a capped sleeve. I actually like a sleeve that is at the elbow.
Absolutely. The comfortable shoes are so expensive but I have to sacrifice to be comfortable. All of the cutest things are for sizes 0 to 10 or small for the average American female. Ulla Popken has nice but expensive clothes.
I wear black ballet flats, loafers and black capris or straight cut pants , Audrey Hepburn style a lot. It’s a classic look that never dates. Certainly does not make me look frumpy. In fact (funnily enough) the women 25 years younger in the office very often copy my style or ask me where I buy my clothes. Makes me chuckle. I think simplicity, classic lines and block colours are the key to looking younger and always looking stylish. I rarely wear prints, really bright colours etc as they really do make me looker older. But hey…I’m also a fashion historian and collector so have seen the styles that come and go and what particular styles have remained long term as flattering items. I agree with you re jewellery. Simple and elegant is best.
I agree simplicity is usually best. As we get older most of us know what looks best, can mix and match etc. Trends have never been my thing but to each their own. if you look at magazines etc. You can learn a lot about putting things together. I am like the older lady the younger girls ask me where I shop etc.
I’m 67, I live in Rome and being “mature” does not make us shy away from being golden fashionistas 😊😊😊we follow trends and adapt it to our “age”😅😅😅😅. Bottom line, we stick to neutral colors and use colors for accents…😊
I agree with almost all of what you said. At 71, I find that the best fashion tip is to exercise and keep your weight in a healthy range. I feel better and like what I see when I exercise regularly and stay away from too much fatty, sugary food.
I’m sixty two. Pretty sure she wouldn’t approve of my standard outfit, Janis Joplin faded tee, ripped jeans, and Ugg’s 😂. The absolute most attractive thing is to feel confident:-)
Unless your super skinny or are quite tall, i think the new style of slacks an inch above the ankle makes a person look shorter and wider. Plus, in Mn winters where i live, who wants a cold draft on the ankle.
@@brayz4boyz976 That's what we always called them. Who decides what is actually in fashion every year, anyway? Walmart? chicos? We all know that in 20 years we're going to look back and say "Oh, that was so awful, I can't believe I liked that".
Your comment about blush placement is so true. I'm 44 and feel like I'm aging well. However, when I did my makeup the same way I've done in the past 20yrs, I looked different, off... I realized it was my blush placement. I can't place it on the apples of my cheek anymore bc gravity took over. I resembled a literal 🤡. Meaning my makeup was just sooo noticeable like one. When I started placing it upward toward my temples, it was like an instant face lift. I also wonder why people think when you care about how you look, it's caring about what people think. I get it may be true for some but for others its quite the contrary. When I look good (based on my own validation), I feel good.
Hi Everyone!! Just discovered Marine's videos and watched 3 of them this morning. Reading the comments was the really eyes opening part. People are either super supportive or super critical - like there's no middle ground. Marine is >50, tiny, and beautiful. I am 64 and weigh 260. Yeah.... I have those awful fat flappy upper arms. I will continue to buy 3/4 length sleeves to cover them up. Also, shorts ride up like my body is trying to "eat" them. I am continuously tugging the legs of shorts back down - in public!! The solution?? Capris!! Marine looks great in all of her videos. And the actual video is well made and edited. It's just not for me. I guess what I'm trying to say is.... If you really don't like what she has to say then WHY watch it and then leave negative comments?? Go away and watch something else. But I want to conclude by saying that Marine has a lot of great ideas to share and she should not allow herself to be hurt or intimated by negative comments. Not even mine. Have a great day!!
Hey, I'm a woman who does things! Sometimes long sleeves are just in the way and rolled sleeves don't stay rolled. A confident woman with good posture and a smile on her face will not look frumpy, no matter what she wears.
Brenda, I think too much emphasis is given to superficial appearance and not enough focus on being able to function in your lifestyle OR improving your behaviors.
Who cares, at the age of 66, I could care less if I dress frumpy, it's more comfortable and I'm not trying to get a man, my husband died 3 years ago, and I do not want to marry again, he was the only one. Frumpy and dumpy is fine, I love it, so I'll dress it, and I don't care what anyone thinks!
I would love to see videos like this one with women who weigh maybe...165+ with tummies, squishy hips, and back rolls! I love the idea of fitted tops like the one you are wearing, but I don't wanna see myself from behind in that, and no one else does either, lol!
I think the biggest issue is that you don’t go based on body types. Not everyone can pull off the looks you note. I have a curvy figure and even though I’m a small a boxy cardigan will make me look frumpy and old. It just really depends on your body type. You should note yours and then that way people know if they should watch based on your body type. If you really want to get more ppl then include additional body types and the type of clothing. You really can’t generalize. What you consider frumpy on you looks good on other body types.
Those pointy toe mules would look ridiculous on me. Plus, I don’t like them. But I think someone taller could pull them off better. It really would be wise not to generalize.
I do want to point out a couple of observations. When you are thinner you can wear almost anything and look good in it. The exception is the leather pants you like. The odd length on the flared out pants is the equivalent to 3/4 sleeves on a blouse. It's just my opinion, No disrespect intended.
Yeah that's such a challenge, is someone stylish, or are they just thin. I generally find fat fashion accounts on Instagram etc are the most inspiring bc it's easier to see true style. Fashion is intensely fatphobic, so following people who bypass that aspect and focus on style is useful.
Yeah, Imma have to agree. Any style that is "frumpy" can look "stylish" on someone who is really thin. You see it all the time, side by side comparisons of outfits on different sized women and the bigger woman is getting shamed while the thin woman is being hailed as a fashion icon. That's some real nonsense right there. The only way I think fashion applies differently to the old than the young is that older women who are more stylish are usually going for a classier, more timeless look. Choosing pieces that look good on them, not what is considered trendy.
You’re right, thinner women at any age look good in almost everything. I often see maybe a shirt over jeans or pants and she looks great but I think I’m not thin enough to pull that off nor is anyone else a bit heavier. Here’s an example..Diane Keaton..despite her fashion preferences she’s been in movies and she looks great in many outfits…think Something’s Gotta Give…white jeans with shirt or the simple black dress. She looked great.
I am new to your channel. It is easier to not wear frumpy outfits if you are not a plus size because there are more choices to choose from. As a plus size, I find most of the clothings options for a plus size person to be frumpy and hideous!!! If you are heavy wearing a florel pattern or a boxy shirt will not make you less frumpy or thinner. Yet, the clothing/fashion industry seems to think this is what we need!!!!
I'm with you! I'm doing Keto and down 30 pounds but still in a size Large top and size 14 jeans. My upper arms are too big so I mostly wear "boxy" men's tees because I don't like women's cap sleeves or how they gather at the waist. When the video host showed up I hated her top because it made her hips look HUGE. But it could have been the angle or how close she was to the camera. Idk. But I don't do fitted anything.
I started keto too just six week ago and by bp gone down and my glucose dropped 200 but still need to drop 100 more and I'll be back in normal range. In a large but feeling so much better. Sugar and carbs are worth it anymore.
@@marlo2919 Way to go! After just 3 months on Keto my A1C went down to 5.6 which is in the normal range! My doctor told me to keep it up as I'm not even in the pre-diabetic range. I also got off my bp meds.
Totally disagree with you re sleeve length ! 3/4 sleeves are much more flattering than wrinkled looking attempts at rolling up full length sleeves - which never stay in place anyway ! To me a 3/4 sleeve makes arms look slimmer and showcases a narrow wrist.
I am at a stage in my life where I dont care what others think and I only dress to please myself and look my best. I won't subject to the torture of high heels. I met my prince and had my kids, I can move on, I dont need to impress anybody. I feel free.
Oops, I realize that my comment must have seem negative, it was not my intention. I just wanted to express that social pressure to conform is hard and it is important to find our own balance in our lives.
Even when I was a young, thin person I couldn’t do heels. They hurt. We should not have to hurt to look nice. I’ve never understood that concept. Was at a function once and a lady told me that after a while your feet will go numb and it doesn’t matter. What!? How is that ok? Goodness.
77 here and 3/4 sleeves are the best - that don't drag or get caught on things, and do cover those flabby upper arms. I often get compliments from younger people wearing them. Totally agree on boxy things. Terrible. I am fit and don't have a stomach. Love the fitted waist wide leg pants/jeans that skim the floor with a fitted top. Those pants you showed definitely look like old lady pants to me. My bunions would die in heels of any height. Had an artist specifically do individual colors. They do not fit the 'seasons' at all. I suggest taking photos of you in various outfits and colors in different lighting and outdoors and then looking at the photos.
I hate 3/4 length sleeves! If you need to push them up you can’t, and if you’re cold in the air conditioning, you can’t roll them down. On top of that they’re unflattering. They make zero sense!
Larger women wear capri length pants as an alternative to skirts and shorts…so there’s that. When it’s 100 degrees out it’s a public service…you don’t want to see my legs and I don’t want to roast alive.
I will NEVER give up my 3/4 length sleeves. I love them and they're comfortable. It's nice to be old enough to not care what others think about what I wear. As Wayne Dyer said, 'your opinion of me is none of my business.'
You can see by the comments, everyone has a different opinion on what they love or hate. That's exactly why we don't need other people telling us what to wear. If it makes you happy.....wear it! If you hate it....don't. Wear colors you enjoy. There are many things in life that we have no choice in but this is one that we do.
There are two kinds of women. 1) those who care about these kinds of tips and 2) those who don't. I listened to the first part but then realized I'm the 2nd woman. At 70+ this is my time for comfort and fun. That's what determines my style choices. Yay! If you're the first kind of girl, yay for YOU. I stopped seeing what people wear and enjoy who they are.
I hear what your saying. Also to be fair while billions of women on our planet share many things unique to being female at diff ages we’re also thankfully unique in ways. I try to leave feeding division with social labels to politics, statisticians, corp marketing teams etc. I’m all for you do you. Whatever feels best and right. Divine feminine. Life is so short. ❤️✨
I couldn’t agree more. Everyone needs to be comfortable with the clothing they wear. Due to individual body chemistry and size issues we all have with our bodies, everyone has individual preferences with certain kinds of shoes, pants, and shirts. When we all wear what works for us and are comfortable, we all feel energetic, mobile and young. There is never a one size fits all recipie when it comes to clothing. Lastly, age is more of a state of mind more than anything, along with a healthy body. When a person dresses comfortably in clothing that suits their indvidual needs, they will naturally act youthful and energetic.
The front tuck does not look good at all if you have a larger chest and are short waisted. especially if you also have any tummy. With that body shape the front tuck just makes your chest and stomach all become one!
I actually can’t get my head around this front tuck, i feel I look like I didn’t fix myself after going to the bathroom. I just try and buy tops that have a nice shape unless they are worn underneath something else
@@StylewithSerena Well everyone's shape is different, But I can promise you with my figure it makes my chest and stomach look all together like one big round lump! Its basically like tucking the bottom of my bra into the top of my pants! And yes leaving the shirt hang down basically does the same thing so I have to go for more fitted things like peplum type shirts, those work best for me. In my opinion unless you have a fairly flat chest and flat stomach, or a long torso the front tuck is really not that attractive.
I like three quarter length sleeves and so do a lot of women ... they're cute and comfortable ... I just wear what I like and I don't care if it's in style or not
3/4 length sleeves! I love and will continue to love. I have Melanoma scars and jiggling upper arms. I don’t always want long sleeves and 3/4 look much neater than rolled sleeves.
I think a fitted cardigan is SO much more flattering than the baggy, thicker one shown in the video. Makes the whole outfit look put together and definitely not frumpy! Other than that, I loved the video !!
Nobody on these style channels ever shows a front tuck on a woman with a stomach, they all suggest we do it but the proof is in the pudding (which I eat too much of, hence the need for a boxy top 😂)
I'm noticing this tuck thing on TV with older actresses, and my first thought is "they're drinkin the Kool-Aid". The tuck emphasizes the stomach pooch, which is not flattering. I love tops that are cut like the maroon floral this woman dumped on. I think that top is lovely and practical. I love a 3/4 sleeve and I have thin arms. I favor men's sweat pants. I like the straight full leg and the fabric is a better quality than a woman's fleece. Kinda casual Dietrich.
I’m 36 yrs old and thin, 5 ft and 95 lbs. I love 3/4 blouse shirts especially if they’re white and jean blue color. They make me look classy when I wear them with shorts and sandals or skinny jeans with short heels and pairing them with gold necklace and bracelet. I also love my cardigan shirts that stop at the waist. I work at school and wear dresses throughout the year. I’m always cold and tight cardigans with my dress make me look put together. I wear the same thing in the winter but I wear them with black tights or leggings with ankle boots. I don’t follow the newest trend but have discovered what really suits my body type and I buy solid colors so they never go out of style. And I’m more drawn to them.
There's nothing more annoying than the word "trend". If you know what works for you, just go with it. Most of us figure this out as we age, but at 36 you are hardly older. When our bodies start changing is where the challenge begins. Not many women get thinner as they age ; neither do men. Most fashion "trends" are aimed at young women.
I thinkbshecwas just saying buy shirts that give you the option of wearing the sleeve where you want it. Some of the 3/4 only sleeve hit at a really awkward, unflattering spot.
I personally think there are 4 options when it comes to style. 1) You are fashionable aka trendy 2) You are classic and therefore timeless 3) You are out of fashion or outdated, like the ladies in that picture. You are wearing things that were trendy many years ago. 4) You have a distinct style, which is neither trendy nor classic but it just works for you. And it could be from any time period. I wouldn't want to be number (3). I also think you must be careful with number (1) but (2) or (4) is the best place to be.
The best fashion tip for anyone is wear what you want and carry your head high with confidence. Watching all fashion trends and classics show that if you do this anything will look good. The whole point of fashion is to make yourself feel good.
What "trendy frump" looks bad on one could look marvelous on another. You can reference Pinterest for 40s and up fashion as well as plus size. "Like" what resonates with you and it will refine your feed (your results)
Woman? Why do you need someone to tell you what to wear??? You are the only one who has your unique personality... Enjoy it. Wear whatever you want to wear! Trust me. The world will appreciate it.
Four months ago someone took a picture of me and I screamed. I looked old and frumpy …well I I went to the gym , cut all carbs and worked hard . . After four months I lost weight, . Well bottom line .. I quit looking frumpy .. Now I can buy cuter clothes and feel amazing.
Oh my gosh yes. I’ve just spent three weeks walking my butt off. Weighed 65.7 now 64.5 after three weeks so now my goal is 60. Hope to obtain this by May. Honestly when you start to lose weight you realise how you look. I’m motivated and also looked at my diet also.
Good for you, being healthy and in shape really inspires one to present themselves beautifully. It's sad that we're at a time in history where people think that not dressing in sweats is shallow..lol
I love 3/4 sleeves and wear them because where I live the summers are not very hot but the sun is fierce. I burn easily from the elbows up in about 2 minutes in the sun. I also think 3/4 sleeves look fine, they are not frumpy or ageing.
I'm almost 58 and love my capris and my quarter length sleeves, and I dont give a flying fig over younger women who think they know how I should dress. Life is too short. Do what you want and what makes you comfortable ☺️
Great video! I love your ideas for my mom. On a side note - Why are some of you here in the comments? She didn't go door to door asking you to change your wardrobe. If you like looking frumpy and older, keep looking frumpy. If you like the style ideas you were raised with in the '50s through '80s, which are ideas from 40 to 70 years ago, keep them. Why come to a video about not looking frumpy and older, and then argue that frumpy and older works for you? I'm sure there are other RUclipsrs singing praises for elastic waste pants, 3/4 sleeve shirts, button-down cardigans, and those nurse looking shoes. Go find those people. If you keep old-fashioned ideas, you're going to look old. There is nothing wrong with looking old. But if you don't want to look old, then you're going to have to stop dressing like someone who looks old. That's basic common sense.
@@MsGoldgirl ❤️ You have a great channel! Even if their first reaction is defensive - "I want to change but how dare you say I need to change!" - you have succeeded in planting a seed. So maybe the next time they go shopping and they see the 3/4 shirt, they'll say "She said rolling the sleeves up for a 3/4 shirt looks more modern, let me look at some long sleeve shirts to see if that might work better."
Agreed! It’s so funny to hear women dying on the hill that capri pants and 3/4 length sleeves are “perky, timeless and YOUTHFUL.” The determination is kind of adorable. 😅😅😅
New to the channel and just subscribed. I found it entertaining, non-judgmental, and fairly accurate. All these women ranting that they "like looking frumpy" are the same ppl who trip or drop something and claim, "I did that on purpose."Nobody *likes* to look frumpy; they're just resigned to it because they lack either the means or motivation to change. Every time they make gravy it turns out lumpy, so they just insist they like the lumps instead of learning to make it better. Comfort does *not* have to equal frumpy; style and comfort are not either/or. There are very stylish, classy clothes just as comfy as those awful Crocs and stretch pants-- even more so because we're much more comfortable feeling confident and presentable, even in casual clothes. Keep up the great content and ignore the ppl in angry denial claiming they don't care. If they really didn't care they wouldn't be here, wouldn't be mad, and wouldn't be bothered enough to comment. Cheers!
@@parentingadabsurdum If what someone is wearing is only worn by people in their stage of life, and they're not a youth, it's not youthful. I don't think there's anything wrong with someone dressing like the majority of people in their generation. Rock that style if that's your style. But it makes no sense to come to a video about dressing more modern to insist you like looking vintage, unless they're trolling. Want to have a vintage style? Have a vintage style. Want to have a modern style? You have to let go of the vinage style. Common sense 101.
Linen pants are a great alternative to capris. I am 50 and live in Florida, and loose fitting, casual, ankle length linen pants are a godsend for me. Either pull on or tailored. I get hotter in the midsection than the legs, and linen pants just feel better all around. Plenty of styles to suit different body types, too.
I would give my right boob for a good pair of well fitting ankle length linen pants. All I can find is big over full leg styles that look like gauchos.
Can you link some cute linen pants. I would love a cute pair. I get so hot in vegas all I wear are capris. I just don't want to look older than I am. Ha ha
Unbelievable how many Debbie downers are in the comments. If you can’t appreciate her advice then simply carry on. I actually appreciate this because I don’t want to look frumpy!!
The cardigans you’re showing look clownish and I guess they’re meant to. They also look very cheap. Nor do they look short. I have a dark taupe cashmere long sleeved cardigan that’s to die for. Is somewhat tapered but not tight.Jewel neckline. Falls at waist. Superb quality. No pockets. Buttons (small). It goes with jeans, trousers, skirts, longer or shorter. Came from Lord & Taylor on sale. I have a cream one also and wear them constantly usually over a good quality cotton tee shirt. No a forgiving sweater to cover anything but it’s a *cardigan* and is exquisite and timeless. Jumped in because I love good cardigans.sweaters.
I wear what I want. I wear what looks good on me. I can't always follow fashion bc frankly, I don't like it and I don't feel like giving freaking China money, hurting the environment or giving companies money who have social justice moralizations. Trends? Ha. bold, modern, etc? Find your style, find your confidence and find your life. I don't or rarely look frumpy, but guess what? I don't give a hoot who thinks what about me bc I've been to enough funerals and estate sales to know that person you try to impress? They die. They move. If they don't like you? It doesn't matter what you wear, they will be nasty. Find your style, enjoy it and to heck with the rest. Life is finite so live your life everyday to the very best you can. God bless.
Good tips. I disagree about the sleeves. When long sleeves end up rolled up, they look way frumpier than 3/4 sleeves. Plus, 3/4 sleeves show off nice forearms and jewelry.
Age is a state of mind. I’m 63 and I love my Spanx leggings, nice sweaters, combat boots etc. if you dress old you will look it. Capri pants are the worse thing you can wear. I never did. They’re awful.
Realizing that you are quite a bit younger than I am… yeah, 3/4 sleeves are not going away - my arms tend to wave at people! 😂 The French tuck & the post-menopausal tummy don’t get along. Otherwise, great suggestions.
@@MyCleverHandle not to mention Tyler on the TV show Dog with a Blog started what he called the tuckle- tuck your shirt at the belt buckle and that was in 2012! Every time I see someone do this and call it whatever they call it, I think of the episode where the sister asks him about that weird shirt tuck thing he does and he says "I call it the tuckle". Still cracks me up!
I appreciate the practical guidance in this video. I turned 50 this year and realized life gets busy and sticking with the same things isn’t something I want to continue. 1. Hubby and I have decided we have too much stuff and are methodically reducing. Next on the list is sorting and purging unused, ill fitting, and unflattering clothing. I’m using your advice as a guide and plan to reduce by 1/3rd. 2. I’m a veteran high school teacher and am a firm believer in “dress the way you want to be treated”. No plans to be a fashionista or spend a fortune on a new wardrobe, but simple classics in combination with comfortable (mostly stylish shoes) are game changers when managing large classrooms. I’ve recognized that when I look and feel put together, I have more confidence, and the school day just seems to flow more smoothly. Thank you for sharing your helpful insight as I recenter myself and put “quality over quantity” and “simplify” at the forefront.
I'm 64 and wouldn't be caught dead in a pair of pants over my ankles! I still wear nothing but Levi's and t-shirts. People who consider 60-80 year olds, old, don't realize that we grew up in the 60s! We were born to Rock and created freedom of expression! We believe in make love not war! Live and let live! And in our hearts, forever young! ✌️❤️
The key is developing your personal style. Being "on trend" is boring. I have no desire to be on-trend. But I also don't want to be frumpy. You must put in the time to know what cuts of clothing, colors and tones, materials, patterns, and styles complement YOU. There are people who collect vintage clothing. I'm one of them. Dated looks are the point. Some people "want" to recreate retro styles. Some people are into academia, cottage-core, granny-core, nerd-core, or whatever dated vintage look they want the to achieve. The thing is if you're going to do it, go all of the way! Be bold! Be daring! Decide what your core style is and then boldly wear it with confidence. Purchase eclectic one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and mix them with modern staple pieces. Don't let society dictate to you what YOUR personal style should be. You decide. You develop it. It can be many different aspects of your personality. Wild, minimalist, maximalist, low-key, whatever it is you choose. Do you!
LOL. I’m 72 and I have earned the right to look as frumpy as I wish! These days I care about comfort and not even a little about what others think-except for church.
I'me 73 and definitely do not want to look frumpy. I do my hair and make up every day and try to look stylish when I go out, i believe in making an effort; it makes me feel better
In my 60s with the common upper bat wing arms - my 3/4 sleeves aren't going anywhere. I personally go for a minimalist look at this stage aiming for age appropriate sophistication. I've been a classic dresser my entire life and it still works (even if I'm not pleased with other visual aspects of aging!)..
I always believed those batwings were permanent but now at 74, I know they aren't...lost a lot of weight during Covid 210 lb to 140 lb) so the sag was really bad but after a year of upper arm exercises including light weights daily I even venture to go sleeveless in summer. Yes the wrinkles are still there but the upper arms are slim and solid. I encourage you to try weights.
@@juanitahardy8583 Congratulations on your weight loss and progress with your arms! 🌸 I've found weights to really help, too. Had to gain a bit of weight back, though, to reduce the crepey upper arm skin.
I love my capris, too mature for shorts. Love my 3/4 shirts, long is too hot and sleeveless shows flabby upperarms. Ladies do what works for you, just make sure it's probably fitted and the color flatters.
At 65 years old I do agree that many of the clothing choices for older women are not flattering. I think many clothes for older women are designed for comfort which is not a bad thing but it sometimes lacks good more up to date style. That said, I love 3/4 inch sleeves. They keep my arms and shoulders warm without the sleeves getting in the way. Rolling up sleeves is a pain. I never wear pointy shoes, very bad for your toes. Shoes are a very personal choice. Many older women have foot issues (some of which can be attributed to wearing stylish shoes). Wear what feels good and doesn't hurt your feet, lots of choices in footwear now a days. At the end of the day healthy pain free feet are more important than style, but with all the choices out there these days you can usually find something if not well your health is more important. 😂
You lost me when you said Chicos! I’m 60 years old with fortunately still sexy body shape. To me Chicos is what my daughters always refer to as a “Teacher” clothes store. I think some of your suggestions are way off! Here’s the thing, if you put something on and it makes YOU feel beautiful, then rock that look and let your light shine. And always compliment other women when you like their outfits. A small kind word to another woman can change their whole day. Life is stressful, let people wear what they want and be happy!
Most women know by 50 what looks good on their body....had a Chico lady just insist that a certain pant would look great on me....I had to try them on to show her that I knew they would not....big prints are 1970s...yuck....3/4 sleeves cover ugly arms....short and sleeveless are a thing of the past for me....like you said....just suggestions....
This has made me 😂 because I’m nearing 50 as well and have just basically done a 180 on all of the “trends or beauty expectations”. Cut all of my long blonde dyed hair to a my natural brown, let my natural curls go wild and have fully embraced my artistic expression through clothing and accessories! For me the best part of getting older is just doing what feels right to me and not following guidelines anymore. That being said this is in NO JUDGEMENT of women who do stick to rules at all!! But for me it’s been freeing to just stick to what feels most “me”.
Exercise in a way that makes you sweat for at LEAST 30 minutes a day. As an alternative, walk for 80 or 90 minutes a day, with some hills. I am a lifelong runner, but if you hate running, do the long walks instead. The glow and the body firming effects will look better on you than any superficial changes you make.
Dont walk or run if you have knee trouble. Do exercise that doesnt work knees. Drs advise against anything that makes bone on bone contact more frequent
My mother in law and sisters in laws and I did our colors in about 1983 or 4 and I have loved working with my wardrobe from that perspective. It turned out the colors that I always loved on me are winter colors. I stopped trying to wear the trendy colors if they weren’t my palette. Simplified my closet. I’m a winter. I love winter colors on me! Jewel tones, ice pastels, black and white for me! Love most of what you had to say. Generally helpful.
Controversial but I think working out also prevents you from looking frumpy no matter what size you are. It just makes you glow and radiate naturally which prevents that old frump look.
To everyone complaining & being salty:
1: Please don't be nasty.
@@AlisMarsaili1351 KK has a perfect body? 😅
Do you aware of knowing about a good RUclips channel to follow, I would be very appreciative. I’m having so much trouble with updating my wardrobe for many reasons. Weight change, where the weight sits, age appropriate, and coordination, with colour and type of shape.
@@charliejb1747 LOL
Absolutely! One of the benefits of getting older is doing as we please! As long as I think I look good, I don’t care what others think.
Same! Linen is my friend.
I agree with you.
Yeah, with you on all points. Florida girl here too over 60, never could live in cold climate, too much laundry.
agree with you, but I am in Finland where the makeup in winter freezes up and falls. and you need to have more coats and boots than weels in the year ... lol, totally agree with you
Not giving up 3/4 length sleeves. Nothing makes a woman look older than sleeveless or short sleeves that show flabby upper arms and old skin.
And I keep my cardigans!! 😂
3/4 length sleeves are great for work. I'm not giving them up.
Flabby arms are the worst!
Totally agree!
Three-quarter sleeves are so popular because it accentuates the slimmest part of the woman’s body, which is their wrist. Plus it is a classy length.
I know just wear what u like!
It's true! Your a wise woman!
♥️❤️♥️❤️♥️❤️
Trying to look younger than you are is a waste of money, time and can effect/affect your confidence scale too.
@@AlisMarsaili1351 i agree. Embrace your ageing process. Not everyone gets that privilege. All this wondering what is allowed or what is acceptable to people you do not even know, is energy draining and steels your peace
The best advice I can give....You do you. Please yourself and don't worry about what others think. Life is too short.
I completely agree!
An excellent comment.
😂🤣😅
As a librarian, I cannot stop wearing cardigans. It's in my contract.😁

I wear what I like! Seeing what middle-aged men look like I have no intention of making myself uncomfortable by worrying what gossips may think of me.
Your reply is dead on!!! Thanks for the smile!!!!
Well said! I 100% agree 👍 😄
It's so . . . toothless.
Yea touché I’m on the same track i really don’t care what others say usually ignore my family loves me no matter how I look
Sounds great!
I love 3/4 sleeves. It hides my batty arms AND it’s not a long sleeve.
I love them because having to roll up sleeves every single time I wash my hands or prepare food and snacks is tiresome! Having a toddler grandson at home means always washing up something.
I agree!
Fully agree. And I don't want to walk around with rolled up sleeves. Tends to look sloppy or uneven
But it is a dated look. And I’m in my 50s too.
Same. And I love a 3/4 sleeve with a boat neck collar as well.
3/4 inch sleeves hide the arm flappy flappy and I can still clean a spill or wash a dish. We don’t all have the same body. I wear a smile and clothes that is love. It increases my confidence.
Am a big fan of the 3/4 sleeve too. Hides the bat wings and the creeping crepe-y skin. 😎
Great suggestions for size 8-10 women of medium height. But I would like to see the ladies in that group picture you showed wearing your suggestions. Most of them were size 18-22. It does make a BIG difference.

I just turned 37🎉, I think FIT matters so much when it comes to looking frumpy. Knowing what suits your figure (height, proportions etc) is important for looking chic.
You are so right about people holding onto the fashion of when they felt their best.
Happy birthday Natalie!!
@@MsGoldgirl thank you!
You were that way in your 20s...ha ha ha ha
@@looneygardener omg, you can love yourself regardless. We all express our self love differently. No need to cast stones by insinuating that women who actually care about how they look are somehow not showing self love because that makes no sense.
The great thing about growing older is that you no longer care if you look frumpy, or any other way. Wear what makes you feel good!
Speak for yourself
Ladies...wear what you feel beautiful in. Do not listen to anyone else and let their opinions make you feel not "cool" or old. If you have it and love it, wear it! Life is way too short to let someone you don't know dictate what you wear. She may have great ideas but there are NO rules! That goes for your hair also. Long, short, gray, colored, curly, straight. Whatever you are comfortable in, wear it. As an older woman, the least of my concerns is looking dumpy to "others". I am happy to look frumpy, as I am finally free of the agonizing stress of needing to feel "attractive" to others. But that's me.
That's you and a whole lot of us who have not seen 49 in a couple decades.

Clothing has an intimate relationship with a person's physical body and personal identity. It’s a language which tells a story about the person who wears it. It’s about being comfortable with YOURSELF , expressing YOUR personality, and translating self-esteem into personal style.

I'm so flattered that I could inspire you!! Go for it!

Great perspective!
I love that Audrey Hepburn style too. I would like the 50’s to make a comeback. I think curvy ladies would look great in some of those styles.
I absolutely adore the Audrey Hepburn black ballet flats and black capris look. So classic.
I agree simplicity is usually best. As we get older most of us know what looks best, can mix and match etc. Trends have never been my thing but to each their own. if you look at magazines etc. You can learn a lot about putting things together. I am like the older lady the younger girls ask me where I shop etc.

Personally, I wouldn't take any advice from someone wearing a stained shirt that needs a serious lint roller and is using face filters.
Hey, I'm a woman who does things! Sometimes long sleeves are just in the way and rolled sleeves don't stay rolled. A confident woman with good posture and a smile on her face will not look frumpy, no matter what she wears.
I so agree.

I totally agree
Totally agree
100%
Those pointy toe mules would look ridiculous on me. Plus, I don’t like them.
But I think someone taller could pull them off better. It really would be wise not to generalize.
I do want to point out a couple of observations. When you are thinner you can wear almost anything and look good in it. The exception is the leather pants you like. The odd length on the flared out pants is the equivalent to 3/4 sleeves on a blouse. It's just my opinion, No disrespect intended.
I don't like the way those leather pants flare out at the wrong length.
Completely agree with the flared cropped pant. There's nothing attractive about those.
Totally agree on boxy things. Terrible. I am fit and don't have a stomach. Love the fitted waist wide leg pants/jeans that skim the floor with a fitted top. Those pants you showed definitely look like old lady pants to me. My bunions would die in heels of any height. Love my 3/4 length sleeves…will not stop wearing them😊
Especially when we get older and have extra skin hanging on our upper arms . You can’t exercise that away.

You had me at "We're all just trying to get dressed in the morning without looking ridiculous". Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!
The front tuck does not look good at all if you have a larger chest and are short waisted. especially if you also have any tummy. With that body shape the front tuck just makes your chest and stomach all become one!
A tiny tuck ..
I actually can’t get my head around this front tuck, i feel I look like I didn’t fix myself after going to the bathroom. I just try and buy tops that have a nice shape unless they are worn underneath something else
A polished front tuck look is not as easy to get as it looks. I have tried and tried but my shirts just look all bunch up.
Does short waisted mean your waist is closer to your boobs or closer to your crotch?

When YOU are 65, I’d love to hear your opinion of 3/4 sleeve tees! THANK GOD Chicos holds onto their “ older peoples’” demands!

I thinkbshecwas just saying buy shirts that give you the option of wearing the sleeve where you want it. Some of the 3/4 only sleeve hit at a really awkward, unflattering spot.
I personally think there are 4 options when it comes to style.
1) You are fashionable aka trendy
2) You are classic and therefore timeless
3) You are out of fashion or outdated, like the ladies in that picture.
Okay this cracks me up because a “shacket” or a chunky cardigan or a cropped pant is totally frumpy. It’s just trendy frump.

Someone who works with Chico’s cannot tell others what is fashinable!
GIRL...Those wide leg "pleather" pants...?????!!!!! NOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!
😂 Ikr? Hideous…
😂😂😂 hate them
I say wear whatever makes you feel comfortable as long as it’s modest.
...and don't trust anyone over thirty! (whoops!) lol
Oh yes. Rock on! I am with you.
Cover those ugly ankles...we don't want to look at them!!!!!!
Do you!
Wholeheartedly agree! Just because something is ‘on trend’ doesn’t mean it will suit you. I look like a fat sparrow in skinny jeans 😂
LOL. I’m 72 and I have earned the right to look as frumpy as I wish! These days I care about comfort and not even a little about what others think-except for church.
Good for you Marcia!!
If you feel great about it, that's great.
Can't go wrong with minimalist well cut, figure flattering clothing that's well made.
Good for you 🙏
This has made me 😂 because I’m nearing 50 as well and have just basically done a 180 on all of the “trends or beauty expectations”.
That's the best attitude!
@@MsGoldgirl maybe you should adopt it .
Best comment here 👏👏👏 (even if I do eschew most of what is on Marnie’s frumpy list).
@@marydumois4242 you are so rude, goodness
@@serious7179 I’m really worried about your opinion of me…
Exercise in a way that makes you sweat for at LEAST 30 minutes a day.
@@daunacoulter2808 you don’t work do you.
My motto at 67 is simple. I wear what I like and like what I wear
YES!💜👌
Controversial but I think working out also prevents you from looking frumpy no matter what size you are. It just makes you glow and radiate naturally which prevents that old frump look.
Be happy and feel comfortable that's all that matters. Life is to short to worry about petty stuff
