  • Duncombe Park House in Helmsley is one of my favourite Georgian Period English Country Houses in Yorkshire, if not England. Sadly, however I think the house is largely unknown.
    When I visited this spectacular Stately Home in late July I took along my Fujifilm XT-30 mirrorless camera and put together this short cinematic video.
    The music was provided by the talented music producer 'Got Jump'. Please check out his music here:

    A little bit about Duncombe Park -
    Whilst the house is not ordinarily open to the public, the grounds are gardens are accessible from Mid-June, through till the end of August.
    The grounds are also pretty extensive and incorporate immaculately looked after grass terraces, classical temples and extensive gardens and woodland walks to explore.
    Duncombe Park is the family seat of the Duncombe family. Now, the massive Helmsley estate was first purchased in 1694 by Banking magnate Charles Duncombe - Also considered England's richest commoner at the time of his death in 1711. The magnificent house we know today however, was built by Charles's nephew Thomas between 1713 and 1730.
    Built to the fabulous designs of Sir William Wakefield, with apparent input from John Vanbrugh (think castle Howard), two adjoining stable block also were added in 1843 by Charles Barry. The house was rebuilt 1895 following a devastating fire and what stands today is what I consider one of the most fabulous stately homes in the country.
    I'd love to be able to tell you about the interiors but sadly I've never been inside. Maybe I'll be invited for a tour one day……….please.
    If you enjoy this video and want to find out more about what there is to do right here at home in the UK, please hit that subscribe button and I'll keep making these videos. I hope you enjoy!
    Filmed on the fantastic Fujifilm XT-30 APS-C Mirrorless Camera in 4K at 30fps. Introduction shot on the even more fantastic FujiFilm X-T4. DJI Ronin SC used for stabilisation. Edited in Final Cut Pro.

    My only unasked for criticism is the music chosen here. Honestly, why not music of the period. There is no copyright on classical music. The house is sublime, and looks well looked after. We has a house in the USA that was fashioned after this pile called Whitmarsh Hall. It had an English front,and a French style front. You’ll see what I mean. Many videos on it. The USA is know for wasting beauty. The interiors were designed by an English Firm named White Allom, who also re-decorated Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in the great rooms. White Allom office was at 15 Hanover Square.

      Thanks for your feedback David! This is actually quite an old video now; if I made it again it would be quite different. Real shame Whitmarsh Hall was destroyed, it looked to be a very beautiful home! Cheers

    The house used to be open to the public in the late Lord Fevershams time but his son closed it . To see the interiors try to find a film called “Diamond Skulls “ which was filmed there in 1987 or 88. I was an extra on it and spent a few days there!

      It's actually quite hidden. When in Helmsley you would hardly know the house existed unless you passed the moderately discreet entrance. Beautiful house, lovely town, and a gorgeous area.
      There's also a walled garden that used to be the fruit, vegetable, and flower garden for the house before becoming a market garden, and is now a restored garden project. Highly recommended !

      Thanks so much, I’m really glad you enjoy them! I would absolutely love to do a video at Wollaton! This was built by one of my favourite architects. The problem is that I usually need permission to film and it can be notoriously difficult to get. If I visit Wollaton I will certainly endeavour to get permission to make a video!

    Nice video but why is it titled ""Inside" Duncombe Park" when it's really just the grounds outside. I was a bit disappointed. But at least you said in the beginning we can't go inside so I didn't expect anything more watching the video.

    • @Xploreheritage
      @Xploreheritage  2 года назад

      Fair point Gerry. I was meaning it was an inside look of the park, as opposed to the house. Really hoping them let me film inside the house though some day! Thanks for watching.

      The family name is Duncombe, the title is Lord Feversham. The present Lord F was disowned by his father due to the son’s bad behaviour, and the estate passed to his younger brother.

    One of these days they'll get the hang of making films of these houses. Gardens, views, all very nice but the house itself, its structure, layout, design, decor - that's what's interesting and please, don't say inside the house unless you actually do go inside the house.

    • @Xploreheritage
      @Xploreheritage  3 года назад

      Yes I agree. Well technically I am referring to the park and not the house, but I do appreciate your point. One day I may be allowed in!

    When it was rebuilt after the fire, did they stick around the original design and type of stone?

    • @Xploreheritage
      @Xploreheritage  4 года назад +1

      Hi Daniel, thanks for your question! To be honest i'm not entirely sure as there is little public infomation about it. I would assume so. I cant say exactly how extensive the fire was, but I imagine it will have been more the interiors that were destroyed. I can't say for certain though!
