This little-known country manor house is one of the most outrageous houses in Britain. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was a flamboyant statement from the 17th century. It's actually two centuries younger.
My oldest daughter went to the University of Evansville and she spent a semester at Harlaxton. I had the privilege of visiting her when she was there and stayed a few nights in there. It is more beautiful inside with all of the architect, hidden doors, it is absolutely beautiful inside.
So envious of you right now
I was a student there - gorgeous - and haunted.
I am glad you and your daughter had a chance to see one of Englands great properties!
It’s weird because I’m reading your comment in English accent
Very Hogwarts.
Holy crow what an amazing set of buildings, they don't make them like that anymore.
Yeah if only there was free labour still... we'd have some cool buildings
@The Aristocrat Free labor 1850 in England? Peasants dont have the skills to build manors either.
@Almighty Xavier Underground?
the gatehouse is cooler than my house. actually I don't have a house
😅😂
Ur honesty made my day
Guess you have to get busy and make something of yourself without comparing your life to the lives of others who did.
@@lightshift3431 it's a joke, moron.
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
Would've been nice to see a bit of the interior.
Bummer this place could of been left as a museum. People are so dumb sometimes they make historical places into office space or parking lots.
@@juniorsir9521 It’s a US university campus. I live near a similar, much older, small stately home bought after the War by a private US university. They maintain the house and grounds immaculately, the grounds are open to the public all year round and you can tour most of the house just by asking politely at the door. Museums aren’t lived in, but a college building is, ok, it’s different usage but it keeps these places going.
Tom Moncrieff I’ve seen the place and most interiors have been converted to office space. It takes from what was original. Anyways not interesting to me much.
There are lost of photos online you just have to google “harlaxton manor interior” it is extremely over the top and very beautiful.
@@juniorsir9521 yessss :(
Good to know it hasn’t gone to waste like many other buildings of this magnitude!
Except it might have a McDonalds, Starbucks and Denny’s in it.
@@jul30ie who cares as long as it doesn’t go to shit?!
@@pacovl46 depends on your definition of shit.
@@jul30ie the building survives and is cared for and therefore will be around for quite some time to come and that’s all that matters to me! I don’t care who’s in it! The problem is that places like this manor are extremely expensive to upkeep, plus the annual property tax is in the neighborhood of about 120000 pound, that’s 10k per month. It’s not easy to find someone who’s willing to drop that much money on a building.
Just for your information the manor is owned by the University of Evansville who has turned it into a college, so no fast food chains in there. Happy now?
@@pacovl46 I agree with you in terms of the building not becoming derelict. Of course it’s way worse when a building is left to rot or worse gets demolished. It makes me sad to think of London’s lost palaces for example and that we’ll never get to see them. I’d be over the moon compared to the worst scenario.
Especially as this is a particularly stunning architecture.
What I’m sad about is that I want to have my cake and eat it. I wish the building was made up of its original exterior AND interior. But the interior is mostly lost when used for purposes like education. Not fully lost but definitely compromised as these institutions are run with different priorities. So I imagine the interior is now quite disappointing.
So no not happy.
This is a very very very beautiful unique architecture. Thank You for sharing !!
I set dinner on the dinning room sideboard at 6:00 you can serve yourselves, breakfast is ready at 9:00 I don't wait on people, I don't stay after dinner not before it begins to get dark, I leave before dark comes. We lived in town, nine miles so there be no one around if you need help, We couIdn't even here you in the night .... No one couId .. Oh!.. The children😯
WORDS!!!!!! wow
What an incredibly beautiful countryside and country manor house in such a beautiful country.
I do not impress easily... Just, wow. Amazing. Would give anything to be able to explore there for a week.
I remember the movie the haunting still one of my favourites
Super weird it is attached to some university in Indiana I'd never heard of before watching this video. Thanks for the weird knowledge SkeEye Britain
By far one of the most elaborate old world castles I have ever seen. Gregory Gregory was a lucky guy.
It's not really a castle tbh. Castles have sheer walls with tiny windows, to keep armies out. This is a manor house.
Extraordinary, quite beautiful and imaginative design. It would likely cost billions to rebuild this castle home as closely as possible with the same kind of fine wood and furnishings, today. Interesting name of the owner Gregory Gregory ☺
What a stunning place, the architecture is superb! Has a bit of resemblance to Chambord in style. Would love to see more of this magnificent manor...
I wish I lived here
Amazing! Would love to see the interiors! 🌠
perfect video. length, sound, pictures - great job!
OMG! Quaint cottage on secluded acre!♥️♥️♥️
Put this in same group as Brympton d'Evercy, Crewe Hall, Easton Neston, Luton Hoo, and Mentmore Towers... Stunning properties either exclusive hotels/wedding venues, or otherwise closed to public. Hopefully one day I'll be permitted to visit :(
That was...short.
Amazing looking place.
The idea of owning this gives me anxiety, but thankfully its not gonna happen
Beautiful building and setting
Woo I hadn't heard of this place, astonishing 🎉
In the late 80s when I went there for a semester (should have been 4, thanks UE), it was a good bit more decrepit. We weren't allowed in the conservatory because of falling panes. The gatehouse was closed, but a friend and I snuck in. (The stairs leading to the 2nd floor were actually hay bales that had been plastered over and it was indeed unsafe.). And you could access the dinky rail system and move through the walls of the house. (I lead a good few tours to late night revelers.). The place was indeed awesome, weird, mysterious and just a fantastic memory.
And what they did t mention was Abraham Lincoln apparently slept there.
Gregory Gregory. Gee, his parents were creative.
Like Walla Walla, they liked him so much they named him twice.
I would take the gate house!
fantastic .......
Even the ghosts at this house get lost in it
The house is better than the movie!
Finally, had a walk around here at the open day yesterday in the blazing sunshine!
Beautiful place
I've been obsessed with this place since I saw "The Haunting"
So beautiful and amazing! I came here from The Haunting
Went to see this last year, so upsetting you cant get closer to the premises. Its a really impressive manor and has a really scenic surrounding. So weird that it sits fairly close to Grantham which when compared to the manor itself dont really match.
Looks a perfect setting for a Gothic horror film!!
Extraordinary estate. GG
Wow what a location!!!Very professionell flying!!You have a New subscriber 👍👍👍🙏🙏
Liked the movie and the manor house is a beautiful place
The American University of Evansville (Indiana)???
The gate house, when you need a place to get away from your home.
Just perfect tres tres chic 👌
I'm glad to see that it's in good hands.
I would love to just live in the gatehouse lol
What a breathtaking place.. "The Haunting" movie introduced me to it!!!
Love this place.😃
I'd buy it.👍
kindly do .... and kick out the 'students' from indiana....
sheesh.
Anthony Salvin, a true master
Wow, the gate house is a mansion itself.
Amazing building
Had to look it up. Now I remember that movie. That coal train is so cool.
Plz click on this RUclips channel #igmirror
Its beautiful
What is the name of the piece of music that is used? It is very good. SPL.
This place looks like Gormenghast!
I want to know why someone decided to destroy the driveway with a speed bump
British Campus of the American University of Evansville??? What does the money in the public purse go on again?!
Gregory Gregory? Serioisly?! :D
I think this is where Winx was filmed
Just your old, casual, personal railroad system built to a castle, furnished with a melting pot of nearly all the old world architecture styles, in the middle of beautiful, open lands.
No big deal. This is 1845...
Gregory gregory?.so good they named him twice
God bless us start and end your day with our ALMIGHTY GOD. THANK you so much po. From Lani D. Nepomuceno, Philippines
Gracias
I will be more than happy with the gatehouse alone......
Incredible
How can he say Gregory Gregory so nonchalantly
The last sentence is the saddest thing in pretty much all of RUclips.
Love Castles.
Den Boe it’s not a castle
I would love to lived in this kind of scary house alone in a hills somewhere haha

It’s unfortunate that so many great houses were built by men who died 2 weeks after completion 😢
Question for those in know (architects, builders/contractors, etc), how much do you think it would cost to build a place like this and all associated out buildings, fence, etc - everything exactly as it is, including all lavish interior fittings, woodwork, tiles, ceilings, custom paint jobs - everything? Even a ballpark figure........
Whaaat?! University of Evansville as in U of E Purple Aces in Evansville, Indiana?? How in the name of god could a little private school like the U of E afford something like that?
Max Johnson who knows, where I live there's a similar situation with a country estate, occupied by an American university...never open to the public.
According to Wikipedia, there are a few other universities that use space in there too from KY, Il, & KS.
@@PINKLUNAMOON fuck them
Long story
It's the school's biggest draws. It is written into the curriculum of every major that a student can go for a semester no additional fees and graduate on time. The flat tuition cost for the school is 40 something thousand a year but few pay that much.
7 gens back last in England sir Henry nickols
Its an Old amazing Star Fort/BATTERY in a Star city. Not a military purpose.
Catherine Zeta-Jones was here.
Is that the voice of Mr. Vincent Nigel-Murray?!
How did a small university in Evansville, IN, (about 2000 students), come up with the cash to buy and maintain this estate?
Cool history
Now a university campus!!!!!!
I kinda wanted to see inside !
What is that massive walled off garden off to the left when the video starts? Why have a giant wall around some small empty area like that?
In the old days that would probably have been the 'kitchen garden' - where the fruit and vegetables for the house were grown. The wall gave shelter and also hid the crops - they weren't considered worth seeing and better hidden from view.
Combien coûte ce magnifique manoir avec tout ces domaines ?👍🎩🎩👑
I wondered why it had an American flag. I wonder what American students make of it - sure it's a beautiful location, but in the middle of nowhere!
Cuanto dinero invertido en la construcción y mantenimiento de esas estructuras tan caprichosas y todo lo que contiene en su interior! De donde se ha obtenido ese dinero? Es necesario un sitio asi? Cual es su función? Que aporta un sitio asi?
My home is my castle 🐢
Combien coûte ce magnifique château y compris tout ces domaines au alentour ?
Need to own it 👍👍👍
Thanks for the 2 minute tour.......
So now it's a money ripping machine for overseas students
O my God!
Well, another castle on my "to visit" list.
It’s not open to the public sadly.
Is that the one from Fate: A Twinx Saga on Netflix?
WOOOOOOOOOOW 🤗💫🕍
Is this Alfea of the Netflix series Fate?
Most of these castels looks like a prison OUTSIDE...🌍
American and British flags!👍🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸
Gormenghast. Where is the Countess trailing cats?
God damn this guy sounds almost exactly like WoodenPotatoes.
This guy sounds like Fane from Divinity original sin 2.
The next Wayne manor?
oooo which university is that? hehehehe.... so nice!
