- The force's Sweetheart, Vera Lynn, born in 1917, performs at 78, on the VE-day, 50 years of world peace, from London in 1995. This year, in 2017, she turns 100! Hip hip hooray for Vera Lynn!
At 78 in this clip.. Her voice was still so young and strong sounding.... a true gem
She passed away today. This superb performance, over 50 years since she recorded these hits, is a testament to her talent and to the veterans who loved her.
She's still serenading the troops in Heaven with her crystal clear voice. Truly, they were the Greatest Generation!
I AM WATCHING THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME AND IT BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. I AM 86 YEARS OLD SO I HAVE A LOT OF MEMORIES. GOOD AND BAD. BUT WHEN I LISTEN TO VERA LYNN SING THESE SONGS I AM UPLIFTED TO A SPIRITUAL PLANE. I BELIEVE THERE IS A SPECIAL PLACE IN HEAVEN FOR ENTAINERS LIKE VERA LYNN.
I spent my childhood in England and remember three reasons we survived. our king and queen. Winston Churchill and Vera Lynn. As an old man I will forever remember them with love and honour
We came to the states after the war but I was in USAF for 6 yrs as a British subject during Korea.
I'm 81 and am American, and I think I know exactly what you mean.
I am also 86 and remember to well ww2 in Britain 🇬🇧🙋♀
Eterna Vera Linn canta com os Anjos no
Céus. Junto a Deus
❣️🤗
I'm American. I was born six years after the war ended. Yet I'm failing at holding back the tears. The British do this heartfelt national sing-in better than any other nation I've seen. (The Last Night of the Proms comes to mind too.) I never get the feeling of an ulterior political motive behind these expressions of affection by all these people for all the other people who have gathered there. To have Ms. Lynn there as a symbol of national affection and courage only magnifies the connections between generations. So much happiness and love! So much more powerful than the daily complaints we naturally have about each other. It's not possible to have such a live gathering this year without endangering one's fellow citizens. How I wish we could have a billion-person Zoom meeting with everyone reaching their hands out to their neighbors all around the world. Well, we can't do that either, but we can think it, make it real in our hearts, and remember it when we do meet again some sunny day.
Her voice was so crisp and strong. In this video she still beat the “singers” of today that rely on auto tune and light shows. Amazing talent, Rest In Peace Vera Lynn!
Tears in my eyes when I watch this video. When the crowd joins in on “We’ll meet Again” my 82 year old heart dances.
Tks. I do feel the same. Greetings from the Netherlands .Jan*1938
I'm going o make sure. to play her wonderful music often. I was a Marine Corps Sgt at Quantico for 2 yrs and saw many couples part for many months. I can't imagine separations of 3 and 4 years.
This lady with her beautiful voice (and perfect pitch!) must have given all the soldiers everywhere hope to hang on. Don't know how
I was led here on this Memorial Day weekend. I thought of the song "You'll Never Know Just How Much I Love You" and jumped at the chance to hear her version.
May all the families whose loved one made the ultimate sacrifice, those who are MIA or POW know that they are never forgotten and the special table is set and acknowledged at every gathering of military where we have a meal.
So glad whenever a comment section like this one brings friends across an ocean together. Take care. Stay safe. And thank you for providing such beautiful spring flowers for the world. 🇺🇸💗

@@diananutt1517 thanks for yr reaction. The older I get the more I do admire our liberators. even though I was only six in April 1945🇳🇱 But I remember it if it was yesterday. I just played “the white cliffs” on my trumpet last week. 75 + 2 (Corona) liberation festival in my birth town Deventer. Peace and health to you.
@@janberings7743 WOW! You can play the trumpet!
@@janberings7743 🌲🍀🌹🌲🌲
I just found this, Jan. I, too, would love to hear you play your trumpet!
Did you learn in school or do you come from a musical family?
Hope you will share anything you can remember from the events of your childhood. The 30's and 40's were a very rough time around the world, but I hope you had happy times, too. I was born in late '47, so I wasn't aware of those struggles until watching PBS and programs from the Smithsonian Organization. You were very young so you probably gathered much of what you know the way I did.
One lovely lady veteran who is 102 was recently honored for her work in the US Army
I remember hearing about Miss Lynn, when my uncles came home all safe in 194 5 ,I was 9 yrs, old and remember it well. They loved her and so did my family too. God Bless her ,rest in peace and thank you.
I’ve watched again. There is no one to compare with ‘Dame Vera’ there never will be. The older I get the more I appreciate this.
Thank you.
I was a little girl during World War 2. I had a friend the same age who would sing for my mother; she had an incredible voice. We were about 10 years old. I remember her singing 'THE WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER'. She had a disease that was not diagnosed until she was adult, and all her children inherited this. it was Muscular Dystrophy. I always cry when hearing this beautiful song.
RIP The Forces Sweetheart who died today at 103. I'm glad you lived long enough to see the 75th anniversary of VE day and all of the people singing your iconic song We'll Meet Again and i'm sure you loved it. Thanks for entertaining our troops during WW2 and they couldn't have done it without you. It's now time for you to meet them again and entertain them once more up there.
She is such a beautiful soul. My Dad was a sailor on the USS Franklin, CV13, and the hope that she brought the men in Great Britain and the States cannot be expressed adequately in words.
Still an amazing voice 50 years on. Thats Class. RIP Dame Vera Lynn your voice gave comfort to so many in such dark and bloody worrying times. Fly High Fly Free and sing to those old boys again.
I Am almost 90 and my parents taught me well - I know every song Dame Vera sang - they have passed but I know and still cry my eyes out - they gave our little island so much hope - we won 🌹
What a voice...what a woman!!
I arrived in London in 1991. My life changed at the very moment the plane landed in Gatwick that August morning, London gave me everything in those my Golden years of my youth. Lived there 5 years... I became a Londoner AND even though I went back to México, I was to remain a Londoner till the very last day of my life... I was there in one of the Royal parks for the 50 VE celebration... A day I won't ever forget... Thanks London ... Thank you my 1990's UK....
Gee there's not many singers who have retained strength in their voice as Vera did. Just beautiful.
I am a post war baby boomer but I know most of the words to Vera Lynn’s songs. It’s not hard to guess where the people who don’t like this came from. RIP Vera from a Kiwi, the whole world loved you
Vera Lynn was an amazing person. Her songs will always with us. The forces sweetheart. Back then she was 78. But she still still sang songs wonderfully. R.I.P. She would be greatly miss forever in our hearts😑😑😑
There are tears in my eyes. At hearing the Sad news of Dear Dame very Lynn. at a good age of 103 years of age. Hope there will be a Memorial Service to Dame Vera Lynn as Vera deserves one in Westminster Abbey too
The voice and spirit of hope and love - God bless Vera Lynn
This lady puts the Great in Britain.
2019,August n I just love her ~ Valour
I recall my Dad & us kids too, used to love listening to her songs. my Dad's military days, after WWII.White cliffs of Dover" used to be aired on BBC Radio & it became one if my fav songs too. Amazing to know she is here today, bless her !
Hear...hear.....jennifer.....absolutely agree...😊😊
An amazing woman!
With Vict'try comes rejoice.
And I'm an American.
ugh.
She gets me right in the heart!!!
Rest in peace Dame Vera Lynn, I’m not old at all and these songs give me a different feeling to any modern song ❤
I am from America and we have NOTHING like her here. Never have and probably never will. She is absolutely amazing!!!!!!
Yes. We most certainly do. We have Barbara Streisand who happens to be 77 now with a voice that rings as true now as it did 50 years ago.
not only did Vera Lynn have an indestructable voice at 78, good to the very last clarion clear note, but she also knew exactly when it was time to stop...on top ! she never declined in public, never made a spectacle of herself....respect!
Absolutely marvellous, isn't she? 😊😊
I just adore her ❤❤❤
I found out about her when she turned 99. I loved her and now miss her.
Such an inspiration for the British victims of the Nazis, helping to maintain hope while enduring devastating terror from the sky, 24hrs a day... the AirRaid sirens at the end are a hair-raising reminder of incoming Nazi terror. But, then after the war ended, they practically disowned Sr. Winston Churchill, the other great inspiration for British citizens DURING the war--- as an American, I'll never understand.. .
RIP Dame Vera Lynn-- that you saved many souls with your songs of hope for the future.
A great lady, she deserves to rest in peace. I think what she did for this country during the war is priceless and can't be measured.
To Hugh Franklin. Others also sang for the troops, like a personal family friend, Helen Clare. BUT what set Vera Lynn apart from the others, is that she risked her own safety to sing for troops on the front line!
I watched her funeral run through towns with people with their heads Don but allUding her as the herself went by
At the last town there was fly over by the RAF.. Iwept for a legend she will never. Be forgotten. go with God beloved one
Still sounds great - she was an inspiration to my dad, United States 3rd Army Engineers, Normandy and Battle of the Bulge vet who married and brought to the US a 5-foot tall Belgian woman who became my mom. RIP all you guys.
Hero dad
England had the songs of WWII. Churchill had the words to strengthen the people. The songs strengthen the heart. I love them all and tear up when I hear them
76 years old Marine USA and she brought me to tears
My mum and dad always said she won the war for us.
Both of them were on the battlefront in the dark days.
My mum and dad argued most stuff while I was growing after the war.
But. if a Vera Lynn song come up on the radio, they stopped arguing.
Thanks for sharing, thats gorgeous
That's lovely phillip 😊
This lovely lady kept up the moral of all allied troops and everybody around the world through the darkest days in british history I do prefer the war time originals tho
Iconic is Vera Lynn. This voice at 78 years "young." Brilliant.
She was in her 70’s here and what a great voice she still had!! Such a lovely performer!!! ❤️
She was 78.
Brought a tear to my hard heart. I don't think most of us in the United States realize what England went through in both world wars
I have studied so long and so diligently the period between 1900 and 1945 that I feel as though I actually lived it. I greatly appreciate Britain and the sacrifice and the struggles they endured. I have the greatest admiration for these stalwart, courageous people. And I absolutely love Queen Elizabeth.
Did my Master’s thesis on the 1944 Education Act. and during the course of working on it came across so many details of what Britain suffered. War propaganda hit that from us. That and the hard times after the War. Whatever possessed Harry Truman to end Lend Lease so soon!
A beautiful voice singing memorable songs. Quite emotional for me, I have a picture of my father on VE Day. He was stationed at Top Cliffe near York in NE England. He is playing the piano with his comrades around. Not a single smile on any face ........... the traumatic and emotional scars were just starting, scars they would carry for life. War is hell.
This woman deserves a State Funeral if anyone does.
Still too soon to say when though.
She lived on the opposite side of the road from my mum's family in East Ham during the war
Too right
Absolutely, and not just for her own contribution but because she is a last representative of that entire generation. Hey, Boris. Listen up.
I couldn't agree with you more, the Wonderful Dame Vera God Bless her.
She's still the nations sweetheart!
My mother and father loved her!
Thanks for the memories.
Moira
From England💐♥
Her voice is even better....wow...impressive
As someone who likes to listen to music from various generations, nothing pleases me more than a standout vocalist. Vera Lynn has an incredibly unique voice that has left such a historical impact.
when she gave the biggest grin while starting "We'll meet again" it gave me chills
Rest in peace Dame Vera Lynn, and thank you for the music. You will always be a symbol of hope and liberty for all.
The world's most admirable lady and she is 102 in a few days.
😲 wow
I can't believe she's still alive hopefully she is let me look it up
RIP
@@untouchedflower5823 I'm sorry but you spoke a bit too soon as shes just passed away
@@raymondhorsfall3414 you're right about that 👍
Not many singers move me to tears instantaneously. She's most definitely one of them.
MrMj Me too. She is absolutely the best ever.
Her voice definitely touched some special fiber of feeling
Takes me way back.
Happy 102nd birthday, Dame Vera Lynn. Your voice is still an inspiration to all who listened to you, not only during WWII but beyond.
Today we call them anthoms, songs that get people singing. Queen We will Rock You, Robbie Williams Angels. But when it really comes to someone singing anthems or spirit lifting song then Dame Vera is the original and best with so many. Makes you feel proud that she is ours, English and British.
Having waited more than 20 years to see this specific performance once more, all I can say is that it was definitely well worth the wait. There will never be another Dame Vera Lynn. Bravo!
:-)
I was 13 years old sat in Hyde Park watching this... On a trip from Newcastle with my grandparents. It's great to see it again. Fantastic memories
How many 79 year olds can still perform, and with undiminished voice
Almost none, todays singers are an absolute disgrace aided by autotune.
Judy Collins
Can't bring anyone to mind....except this beautiful lady 😊
She is wonderful! Can't stop crying!
She was 78 years old at the time of this celebration. And today she's 103!
We have lost a piece of British History. I got goosebumps watching this especially when she sang land of hope of hope and glory. It’s a generation we will never have again and that generation is slowly passing away and soon we will be in a Britain that is no longer proud.
It was a pity to lose her. Made my dad cry when he heard that she had died. RIP.
this is just adorable. from bad days, she kept the lads spirits up, and I don't think even today she knows how much she meant to them.
Her voice was just as powerful as it had been 50 years earlier! My late father would always comment on how she enunciated every word so perfectly. She still does!
I was there! She was part of my wartime childhood and she means a lot to me!
A tribute to Vera's beautiful, undiminished voice and talent. A tribute to epic spirit of Great Britain as well.
Vera Lynn, a British treasure.
yes
So great.
She was good
I can't believe how well her voice held up in the 50 intervening years. She sounds absolutely amazing.
she just turned 102 yesterday, god bless
ewk alt cool
God has blessed her and given her long years.
she’s now passed, god bless her soul for touching all who have heard her music.
I have been situated in Australia since 1959 and have never travelled to my home country in 57 years because of PTSD & Anxiety after serving in the Royal Australian Air force but Vera's songs still bring a tear to my eye, especially 'They'll Always Be An England' I wish you a very lovely and wonderful birthday this year Dame Vera Lynn and everything your heart wishes for. God bless you and thanks for the songs over the years. Lets hope there will always be a Vera Lynn in the hearts of the English people, as there is in mine. Thank you again.
Wot a load of rubbish dave
Lance Highfield - yeah, well no one asked for your opinion LaNce

Still, today, a nations sweetheart. Dame Vera Lynn, a national treasure and a bloody good singer to boot. I hope when Dame Vera does finally succumb to the next life, this country gives her the send off she deserves. One aligned to royalty.
David Green A State Funeral definitely.
I am from South Africa and I agree
An English Rose who inspires to this day! Never give in and let's fight the awful virus with Vera singing to us. God Bless everyone....we'll meet again.
Vera Lynn the greatest singer ever/so far....Elvis a distant second
Remember I watched this show on tv.. Imagine she also song these songs 50 years earlier for the soldiers... it´s amazing and brings tears in my eyes even I´m only 55 yeras old. But my dad and grandparents remebered these songs and the time.. I have a lot of Veras original recordings on 78`Rpms.. and often listen to them....
Vera was the heart and soul of 'the time' ..She touched on those spaces which we can only dream of...It was just the time and the human being she was.! When I watch her films, and they makes me happy..When I see her in remembrance shows they make me proud....Those times now are lost in endless passages but Vera will continue to live on for ever! xxxx A statue is planned for her .on the white cliffs of Dover... If you see info on this....support it !
A real British treasure. Happy 100th birthday, Dame Vera.
The term 'National Treasure ' is bandied around too easily. Usually about those most people have never heard of. She TRULY deserves the title.
Honeslty crazy she is still alive 102 wow
She’s now passed away just a week ago
@@tylerheiman6536Yes, at age 103. She was a phenomenal entertainer over so many eras. Vera Lynn helped win World War Ii in so many ways. Britain survived World War II and is a great nation again that which the United States is originally from. We are still connected in so many ways.
What can I say? I was born in 1970. I had a grandmother born in Leith Docks who worked in a Birmingham munitions factory & contracted cancer from the chemicals, & a grandfather on my other side who contracted gangrene in Africa. MY people NEVER said no! No matter where in our Empire, OUR people came. I have said this for years & got abuse: from the bottom of my heart, I thank both the Empire & OUR commonwealth of Nations.
Andrew Lang I hear ya! My Mum was born 1925 and had tales of the blackouts and black market items her Dad could get? I really wished I asked she more questions 😞
Not a single bad word could ever be said about this wonderful lady. Forces sweetheart and the nations sweetheart. May you rest in peace Dame Vera x
To all who put 22 dislikes here: what do you expect to see here ? Give respect to her, how do you feel and live if you were 102 years old ? Most of us were a little bit lower, a bit weaker and a bit fragile with half her well lived 102 years, at 78 she was capable to sing a whole show with magnificent power and intonation of voice, most of all merely will be capable of to spell some words at 50...
The idiots, are not worth bothering about.Every vid on RUclips has the idiots.
The 22 are just dumb. We were in awe of this lady and what she did for her country.i will die loving her as much as during war in UK.
@@gordonrobertson9072 I am guessing you are well in your 90's, God bless you sir, I wish you many more years in good health!
One of my mom's favorite singers ❤️
anyone else here after she passed away? r.i.p ✨
Great to be able to listen to her on a sunny day!, the sky is blue and there's just peace, we owe it all to the lads who fought for this very kind of peace in the UK
I was there that night and have always had the highest regard for this lovely lady. Must admit though, her songs bring tears to my eyes.
Tarquin45as am American goose bumps. My mother sings these songs ... her memory of england is strong ... and I am only 26 years old. England is young to her,
.
Hard to think that she is 78 in this video! She could pass for someone in her fifies! She also doesn't sound anywhere near 78! She still had such a powerful, yet gentle voice even at this age. God bless her!
Her songs gave hope to the world when it all looked hopeless. Thank you Vera Lynn. Dark days were parted because of you. Thank you again!!.
I was actually born VE Day 1945 and have enjoyed this lovely ladies voice all my life.
She sounds SO wonderful. Her voice is still so pure, strong and beautiful. Just incredible!
Well Dame Vera, I had my own "adventures" in Berkely Square during the 1980's. Thanks to you and the rest of the war effort, I was free to do that. Best wishes to you. I was born just after the War, and your "Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover" always makes me cry.
One of the very great morale builders of WW ll and an unmatched voice.
God bless this woman.
She lived a long, fulfilling life but somehow it still feels like she's left us far too soon.
I really do hope that a heaven exists for her to go to, she honestly deserves it.
May she rest in peace.
Churchill and Vera expressed in words and songs the Brittish stubborness and their wish to allways have their TEA in peace. :-)
God bless her. 100 years old now. She devoted her life to charity, helping children and servicemen. A wonderful lady :)
Your very kind
And 103 now! :)
It's sad that she left a week ago.
What a voice with 78 years and now she's 103. Dame Vera, happy birthday. May the white cliffs of Dover shine over your birthday. And when Corona is over, we will sing it together.
Complete respect for this Lady
God Bless You Vera for ALL you've done not only Britain but for ALL of us ! RIP
I'm from Dover and when you're far from home Vera Lynn brings you back. Happy Birthday Vera
👏👏
My father was protecting himself under one of the army lorries from a bomb attack when on the radio that was still on , came the beautiful voice of Vera Lynne and he fell in love with her, as did many other forces men I am sure. She really is a national treasure.
The world is lucky to have a person like Dame Vera Lynn still in it, with a powerful voice to remind us of the past. The passion, emotion, and strength in her voice aways bring a wistful tear to my eye as I feel a sense of pride and common good with all of her songs. Even though I am American and not that aware of her influence in WWII, until recently, I appreciate her steadfast support of British troops especially during that horrid time of German bombs reigning down on the innocent families of London starting in 1939. My Dad, now deceased, was one year older than Dame Vera and a veteran of WWII.
I saw a video display on RUclips of Dame stalwarts projecting the British flag, then Vera Lynn's picture onto the White Cliffs of Dover from the sea in honor of her birthday on March 20, 2017. That was a STAND-UP thing to do. May God Bless you Dame Vera and keep you with us for many more years.
25th March 2019. This made me so emotional with tears in my eyes, I left the land of my birth and heritage in August 1968 to settle in Australia and I have enjoyed a wonderful free life here but this video shows me that my heart and soul are still British although sadly I will never return.
I sing at assisted and memorie care facilities and these are the songs that I sing for my senior citizens
Very kind of you. I am sure you touch the sentiments of these dear old people.
Happy 100th Birthday to a beautiful lady Dame Vera
I’m melted in tears right now.
My favourite singer.i can see she has respect for the soldiers who fought in the war so emotional!!!
My dad always sang this song. He was 15 during the war and had been evacuated to the countryside while my Nan stayed in London and worked in an ammunitions factory. My dad came home to find his house was gone and yet he always said that the war years were the best..because of how the people stuck together and took care of one another!
I’ve been away from England 50 years and miss it every day, this brought tears to my eyes
Where are you situated now? , Spring is slowly beginning here, the sounds and smells, even how the sun shines after a daft winter .....ohhh I love it!!
What a voice. I cant stop listening to her.
2019 - Still our Dame Vera XX
She and Betty White are the most precious people on this Earth.
What a beautiful lady and wonderful voice, that encouraged England through the war. Just discovered her tonight, my bad. This was an awesome presentation.
I am crying with joy. So wonderful
Never gets old, never!
The D-Day Darlings do her proper honors, which she so richly deserves. Very nostalgic. My dad was a ball turret gunner in B-17's. He knew all her songs when he came home.
Amazing lady ,great romaqntic songs make me cry,,,,so emotional....
This lady is amazing. On my radio show last night, my tribute for the 63rd anniversary of D-Day, was to open the show with Dame Vera singing 'Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye'. And her voice was just as strong 50yrs later. Deffo my favourite centenarian.
THANK YOU You Tube for this video. It brought so many memories of my childhood years, listening to Vera sing on our wireless during the dark times we all endured. I must admit to shedding a few tears hearing that marvellous, familiar voice. Closing my eyes and just listening to her, is still magic. Long may she continue.
Amazing memories my friend.
