As a Vietnam era vet, I was privileged to one day meet a plank owner from the USS Wisconsin. We stood and talked for quite a while and I knew I was in the presence of someone great. So humble, yet so proud of the role he and his shipmates played in trying to preserve our country and it's way of life. As we talked, we began to compare the time when he served as compared to today's society and I could feel a deep sense of sadness in his voice. And the CRAPPY way our less than worthless government and the anal-driven VA treats those great men would make any real American sick to their stomach. I doubt I'll ever meet this elderly gentleman again in this life but for a brief moment in time I was honored to have been allowed to spend time with a man like him. We owe him along with the men and women of his generation a debt we can never hope to repay.

Those singers do justice to the heartfelt song, and their initiative in bringing to to audiences of old and new fans is commendable. Vera Lynn's version was surely an inspiration to Allied Forces, including my father who did two tours in Europe as an RCAF Spitfire pilot during WW II.

We became close friends with a WWII Navy veteran. He was a "randy" exsailor. He said he had no family left. So we sort of adopted him. He was diagnosed with cancer and went into the VA Hospital. I we both worked, but I managed to go to the VA after work. He had so many stories he wanted to share. Not all were funny. Some were serious as death. He asked us to find his mothers grave, and he wanted to be buried there. He had never married, and he said he had no living relatives. Well, he did. I'm not sure, but when we had a memorial for him, 5 people came claiming to be related to him. They wanted to know what happened to the money 💰 he got for "dying" at the VA. We told them we had no idea. But they were welcome to go with us to bury him in a cemetery in Odessa,TX. They just evaporated, never to be heard of again. We took his ashes down there, and we paid for the costs of burying him. The VA Hospital gave us his headstone. We liked to think that he was with his mother in the afterlife. Some of his favorite things were friends, church, and the VFW friends and the bar, and he loved his beer 🍺 🍻 🍺. He always said he felt we adopted him, and he loved home cooked meals and watching me wash dishes. We miss him and his stories. We received his flag from the VA. We went down to the trophy shop and had his name engraved to put on the flag display case. I wanted to add our family who served. So, to honor father and uncles we had. Ed - Navy, Raymond - Navy , Emmett - Army, Cecil - Army, Paul - Air Force, Larry - Navy. They have a place of honor on our mantle.
