II'm a U.S. Marine veteran , served in Vietnam and when I heard the D-Day Darlings singing those songs of WWI and WWII it brought tears to my eyes. My dad was a WWII veteran, he would have been so proud of them as I am. We must never forget the sacrafices they all made for our freedom.

I am a British Army veteran - fought in the GWOT Afghanistan- I went to see that last big DDay Avery
anniversary- I saw those girls singing and climbed right up onto the turret of a wrecked Sherman and filmed those girls singing their hearts out to those old warriors - one of the hardest things I ever done - I must of cried a gallon …. Truly unforgettable now I have filmed it. Thanks for your service and your comment. ⚔️🇬🇧🇺🇸⚔️

I was 9 years old on D Day living in Southern England. Now I'm 86 living in New Zealand, but that Vera Lynn song never fails to make my eyes moisten. I remember seeing the long lines of trains bringing the wounded up from the coast, which was so sad. We didn't even know that the invasion was on. The night before, all the open land around our town was covered in trucks, bren gun carriers and munition dumps etc. During the night there was the sound of a lot of aircraft flying overhead, but we just assumed it was another bombing raid, but when I got up in the morning, everything had gone. All that was left in the soft ground were the wheel ruts and tank tracks. Looking at the celebration in France, it's sad to see so few are left, but I honour them and those who have gone, because we owe our way of life today to them.

Hello Dave, Thank you so very much for your living account of the build up of troops and movement of the D Day invasion forces. Yes it’s a little so few are left - but I feel deeply privileged to have been able to thank a few them and have a drink or two with some of the rascals. I am 53 years old and grew up in a family that knew the loss and cost of WW1 and 2, and served in today’s British Army, fought in infantry in Afghanistan but I feel like war tourist compared to men who defended our homelands and freed the first world from evil. I grew up Dorset on the south coast - where were you living 6th June ‘44?

@@BlackbeardBikes I Lived in Woking Surrey. I was 5 years old when the Blitz started and a memory that has stayed in my mind was, Dad, who was in the Fire Service , taking me outside our front door one night. The sky to the North was glowing orange against the blackout. He said, " That's London burning son and I have to go soon." He never spoke about it to my recollection, but I remember him coming home smelling of smoke and very dirty.

I'm closing on 70 y/o and I've probably read 50-60 books about Normandy, June 6, 1944. I vividly remember my Dad taking me to the local drive-in in 1963 when "The Longest Day" premiered. I was just 10 y/o. I remember a few scenes where I heard Dad Sniffing and I looked over and saw tears running down his cheeks. He was US Navy and served in the Pacific but seeing what happened on those beaches still affected him. There is an awesome book I found recently entitled " Every Man A Hero" by Ray Lambert. He was a US Army medic who participated in the landings in N Africa, Sicily and Normandy. His story of what it was like during the 1st wave at Omaha Beach that day is gut wrenching. He was there with his Brother and both were severely wounded. There is a recognized monument, 'Ray's Rock' on Omaha Beach today where he treated wounded GI's. It was just about the safest place on the beach that day. Incredible story of guts, determination, and heroism. He passed away last year at 100 y/o. He won 3 Purple Hearts and 2 Silver Stars.
