Im not too surprised to see this. I called on this store for kelloggs in 2008. The store was falling apart back then due to lack of maintenance. Great shots of all those old signs.
That store closed in early 2011. I remember helping close this location. From what I remember they had low sales for years and the landlord wanted to raise the rent so it would just be a huge drain on the company. The decor is from the 90’s and they never really updated it because the sales had always been low.
I'm not sure how long it took because I did a whole bunch of other videos in the area as well east of the area. But if I was to drive straight to Olympia Fields it would probably take about an hour
keep up ther good work.im working on documenting defunct stores in my area,i got a kmart and a few others, you are lucky to have no security come at you for making sure no one forgets these stores.EVERY store i go to to film has security there to run me away :(
Olympia fileds is next to Matteson and there was a food for less, ultra foods, and walmart supercenter so it either lost business to those stores or it was close to Matteson
Remember this Jewel-Osco for some odd reason, However here is the brief history of this company till 1998 when it was privately owned by a company called American Stores was sold to Albertsons. In 2006 Supervalu-based in suburban Minneapolis, MN acquired this division until 2010 or 2012. I am convinced Albertsons folded up this location because of the walmart supercenter recently opened across the street. A personal opinion of mine here, recently I have started seeing commercials for walmart thinking their prices are better than Jewel-Osco. Personally I am not truly convinced that both Jewel-Osco and walmart have low prices between the two of them. 25 years ago I think you could get decent deals at Jewel-Osco when they were owned privately not since Albertsons acquired them. Sadly I missed the old ways of Jewel-Osco, and the layout was from the late 1980s-early 1990s, Jewel-Osco had an identical layout in Joliet/Crest Hill, IL till a recent remodel and also in Bativa, IL. Words of wisdom.
You are right. Jewel had great sales in their weekly Thursday later Wednesday ads. I don't live in Illinois anymore and when I visited Jewel in Naperville and Lisle recently , the layout and atmosphere now seems kind of cheap and tacky. The bakery had stacks of cakes for $5.00 and they looked horrible and not very fresh. Not the same feeling as before. I miss Dominick's.
I am 100% in total agreement with you on that one. In fact Dominick's was the better grocery store how the family that ran it with lousy advice from a private investment group to have Safeway (which now is part of Albertsons) acquire it. Is beyond me. Two things I miss about Dominick's though: I had a great job with them, And I miss their Fresh Values Card. Enough said.
I remember coming here in 2011 for my brother’s birthday. We usually come here or the former Ultra Foods to get our birthday cakes. We would get our balloons from one of the little stores in the plaza.
This is probably from the 90’s. I remember the signage and the colored stripes next to the signs, and the blue tiles on the floor. Looks like this store hasn’t been rehabbed in a very long time either
Never seen a JEWEL OSCO! The closest I've seen to that is the Osco Pharmacy that appeared in my Albertsons... Except I don't think they really focus on being those Osco Pharmacies so much.
Olympia Fields and Richton Park are probably one of the nicer suburbs out in this section of Chicagoland Unfortunately, this sits near the Chicago Heights border which that town is pretty sad and ghetto, which probably meant a lot of Chicago Heights people probably shopped here, and perhaps criminals from Chicago Heights and others did so as well
Ghetto? Sad? Criminals from Chicago Heights? This whole paragraph was rude af, and can be taken very offensive by someone who lives in Chicago Heights or even just near it. It’s nothing “ghetto” about Chicago heights. The neighborhood has just been given up on. So stop talking about something you don’t know. Cause it’s giving racist “Northern Illinois”.
you should look up Sterks Super Foods in Park Forest Illinois I worked there for 5 years you can't find a single thing about it when I was let go of my job it closed it became Country Squier I was hired again then after at it store in Chicago Heights sister after it closed then Fresh Market came to Park Forest my nephew worked there it closed down my city was to open it as Jet Food but that was a dream
Jacksonville is on my radar but i dont know when. I mainly want to do the penneys there because after mattoon closes thats the last small town penneys in illinois.
1:58 SMH at stores that say it's "their Policy" yet it is not posted anywhere at all in the public eye... Like Yeah. Sure. Sounds like a duck that quacks like a cat Lol

We have Albertsons here in New Mexico. I like this video a lot, you're really funny 😊👍
Thank you
Lot of weird towns in Illinois
This store opened in August 1988 & closed in August 2011 after 23 years.
How long did it take you to drive from Aurora to Olympia Fields? Did you know R Kelly used to have a house and live out here?

Enough said.
No its this location close 6 month after food4less open in 2011
Take a good look! Abandoned jewel olympia fields, illinois you saw a jewel ad on both WGN tv and America (now newsnation)
Closed around 2012.. I worked at jewel at the time in this district. Rare they close a store but low sales and high theft have factors.
And it’s “the jewels” and “oscos” not jewel osco 🤣🤣🤣
Such a shame. Looked like a beautiful store. Seems the south suburbs is on a decline.
I was gonna say you rarely see an empty jewel

Fam you’ve literally made videos at all the locations I used to shop at 😭
Never seen a JEWEL OSCO! The closest I've seen to that is the Osco Pharmacy that appeared in my Albertsons... Except I don't think they really focus on being those Osco Pharmacies so much.
I’ve been to Illinois before so I heard of jewel osco.

Ford Heights is worst
my late sister Janice Armstrong Critelli worked there for over 12 years
you should look up Sterks Super Foods in Park Forest Illinois I worked there for 5 years you can't find a single thing about it when I was let go of my job it closed it became Country Squier I was hired again then after at it store in Chicago Heights sister after it closed then Fresh Market came to Park Forest my nephew worked there it closed down my city was to open it as Jet Food but that was a dream
From the research I did looks like it closed in the fall of 2011. Reported that it closed due to high price lease or that their lease agreement ended.
Did you ever do a face reveal
Besides the reflections in the Glass windows
In Jacksonville, I found an abandoned Long John Silvers, Pizza Hut and Family video, I EVEN SAW A SHOPKO OPTICAL
Jacksonville is on my radar but i dont know when. I mainly want to do the penneys there because after mattoon closes thats the last small town penneys in illinois.
Opened around 1988 and closed 2011
Is Olympia Fields by Matteson? If so, that explains the dead strip mall.
Yes
I like Jewel because there is one so close to me but the prices are high just like Target
1:58 SMH at stores that say it's "their Policy" yet it is not posted anywhere at all in the public eye... Like Yeah. Sure. Sounds like a duck that quacks like a cat Lol
The future of America right here.😂😂😂
Why jewel Osco is abonated
