My grandma lives in Steger (pronounces STAY-gurr) and this was the Kmart I would always get my club penguin membership cards. Thank you for this video!
North side of Steger where the Kmart was is Cook county. South side of Steger is Will county. Liberal run Cook county has run many businesses out of Cook county due to massive taxes. Will county side of town does much better. 2023, The Kmart site is still vacant as county taxes steadily increase.
So I go to a bar in the same lot as this dead Kmart …. 😅 It’s just been sitting there for years. I figured they would do something with it as soon as the Kmart closed but… nope!
Awesome find. This Kmart looks like the one in Lake Charles, LA with the garden shop in the front. It closed in September 2018. Sadly the store was heavily damaged by hurricane Laura with its 155 mph winds that hit Lake Charles in 2020. The garden shop was destroyed taking the brunt. There are videos of the store before and after it closed and also a video of the damages sustained by the storm. So cool you got to get into the garden shop of this store and get the extra peeks inside. Great video and thank you for taking us along. Stay safe.
i grew up down the street. my family shopped here all the time, weekly even - it was our pharmacy and home goods store, back before there were walmarts close to us. i even remember when there were computers inside past the checkout, free to use. seeing the dead building in person daily and in this video is so bittersweet.
4:31 I can just imagine not long ago when numerous plants would adorn that area. You'd see all sorts of different varieties, and it'd be opening up right around this time (March/April), since it was seasonal. Those garden shops were cool, because they were gated off like that, and you could take stuff outside of the store with you while you plant shopped. I may be a nerd here, but I always thought it was cool how you could shop outside while still technically inside the store- inside the store, but outside the building!! :P
i was born in 1984, grew up in this town, down the street from this place. I first laid eyes on the super nintendo and super mario world in this building. Even took taikwondo classes in the plaza in 5th grade XD Did you pick up a little skeezers pizza while u were here cause im sorry if you did
if you like letting people move in who can’t get hooked on phonics THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED to live in this RACIST STATE & this is the twin, 2 counties divided by 200 old electoral & taxing districts your child can skip 10 grades & not be good enough to be treated with dignity and respect
Back way long ago a huge piano factory sat there until it burned down, and it was never rebuilt. That’s why stager is known for pianos.

I liked that store. It was the last K Mart I shopped at. RIP Steger K Mart. Thanks for the nice video.

I filmed an abandoned Sears today and it just boggles my mind all these stores that have closed in The Last 5 Years
Steger's most famous landmark. That garden center was the Auto center until the early 80's. Hence the unusual construction.

This was one of the few locations that had it's signage on the outside upgraded with the new logo
I believe this one closed in November of 2018
Very awesome that you got inside the garden center, thanks for sharing 👍
