A PETA eyewitness documented that thousands of animals were confined to plastic bins stacked in shelving units like filing cabinet drawers at Holmes Farm, a massive animal mill in Pennsylvania that supplies hamsters, rabbits, gerbils, chinchillas, ferrets, and other small animals to hundreds of pet stores across the eastern U.S.
Based on PETA's evidence, a team of U.S. Department of Agriculture officials descended on Holmes Farm, which is now under federal investigation. PETA's observer never saw any animals receive veterinary care at the facility, despite repeatedly alerting the manager to obviously sick and injured individuals. Instead, workers piled dozens of animals-ranging from rats and gerbils to guinea pigs and even a rabbit-at a time into a feces-smeared cooler and crudely gassed them with carbon dioxide. Their screams could be heard across the room.
Live rats were stuffed into plastic zipper bags or tossed onto plastic lids and put in a freezer, slowly freezing to death even as some frantically tried to claw their way out.
During nearly three months at the facility, PETA's observer found hundreds of small animals dead, often in bins in which no water was available.
This case is hardly an anomaly: Holmes Farm is the fifth animal dealer with ties to PetSmart and/or Petco that PETA has exposed. Please, pledge never to buy pet supplies from retailers that sell any animals. Let the big-box stores' leaders know that you'll instead buy supplies from businesses that don't sell any animals, such as Target, Walgreens, or online retailers:

I imagine the employees are overstressed and overworked, and they simply don't have time to feel sad about the animals who die or are injured. I would also imagine many employees here simply have no other choice but to keep this job. If anyone's to blame, it's the people in charge.
The exact same was said about the guards at Dachau and Auschwitz, if you torture an animal. It's you who bares the blame, but the structure of command and culture that rules their employment is seriously messed up.

Cats from pet co and pet smart are rescued they are not from there. So he most likely lived on the streets or someone gave him up.

Dance to the BaileyBeat where I live all the cats are rescue cats and none come from the supplier. It might be different in other places. But it has signs on the cages that say how they got there and most of the cats either were found on the street or their owners did not want them.

I rescued my Guinea Pig from PetSmart, he was kept in the backroom of the store, he was there for 4 months. If I didnt adopt him he would have died of loneliness in a dark room where they keep "unlovable" pets. He's starting to feel comfortable and slowly gaining confidence, I love my furbaby he's the best ❤🐷❤

I absolutely had no idea that this was being done to these animals. I myself have adopted a cat and a hamster from Petco, and I am glad to have helped those animals find a better home. I can't believe those workers don't care at all about the health of their pets. I AM OUTRAGED.

I’ve gotten quite a few rodents from pet stores and I feel so bad that they came from places with horrible conditions like that, and ima list all my rodents (they all died of old age) I’ve had 2 albino mice, a dwarf hamster named sprinkles, an albino hamster named winter, and right now I have a male gerbil named chip

Yes and also when I go there I see alot of dead fish and then I ask if they could take them out and they do and then i'm like are they sick of something and then they tell me that they just get sucked up by the filter. And then I look back in there and then some that sre still alive are swimming with their backs crooked.

This made me cry so many times, and I can’t believe I used to shop at these stores, not knowing what was going on behind closed doors. My sisters had gotten two dwarf hamsters at Petsmart, for a surprise. They were frantic in there cages but my sisters loved them dearly, about three to two weeks go by and we find them less active and one bleeding. They were so fragile and we couldn’t figure out why. Next thing you know they both die out of no where, and now I know why. Because they were kept under such terrible conditions and probably caught a sickness that had developed later on, after they had been adopted. I’m so thankful to have my cat Coco, healthy, sweet, and playful. She was adopted from a shelter out of town were they took good care of her as a kitten and me as her mother and caretaker get to watch her grow. Being a caretaker of an animal is a wonderful experience, you get to build this unbreakable bond, built on love and trust. It breaks my heart to see these animals treated under such cruelty, my sister had recently bought some parakeets from Petsmart and thankfully they’ve appeared healthy. However Jade, our little green and yellow, was very hostile for nearly three weeks, whether that was from cruel treatment or she had a rough time adjusting, I can’t be sure. What I am sure of is that you won’t catch me inside of of Pet store anytime soon.
Do not keep more than one hamster in a cage at a time. They can and will kill eachother.

This is terrible I bought my cat from a local pet smart in Canada an to think that this is how she could of spent the first few moths of my life sickens me! I also have a chinchilla which I got from a friends who's chinchilla had baby and I love them both so much I can imagine if this is what theirs life was like! Thank you peta for bringing to my knowledge that this is how the animals are treated am NEVER buying from then again!!!

electro fox Actually, he's exactly right. Stores like PetSmart and Petco get their cats through local rescues. The ones near me use Forgotten Cats and Faithful Friends. The cats aren't from Holmes. They were either rescued from high kill shelters, or found wandering around without a home.

And the cats at Petco and PetSmart are literally from local shelters. There's literature inside the store about their rescue. The ones near me specifically mention Faithful Friends and Forgotten Cats, two rescues that I'm familiar with and have had dealings with in the past.
This is very cruel. We NEED to get them shutdown!

i feel so bad for the hamster that died on the floor without receiving any help at all and it was in pain the whole time too, in general i feel bad for all the animals, they shouldn’t be treated so badly.

My biggest regret is buying my pet birds from petco. They are completely healthy and happy birds, but it sickens me that I supported things like this without even knowing what was going on.

This made me cry so hard... my dogs are both rescues one (the smallest) lived in a hoarder house and had to fight for his food and roamed and was able to use “the restroom” wherever he wanted. My other dog (the youngest but largest) lived on the streets and just ate what she could find. They were both at kill shelters and their times were almost up. I told my mom to get both of them and she brought them home. They get all the food they want and need. They’re well groomed and clipped nails. (Not declawed tho). Also not potty trained lol 😂 but they’re the lights of my life❤️ love ya buck and strawberry 🍓

I don’t think it’s all PetSmart and PetCo stores that are abusing animals; at my PetSmart, all of the small animals were very healthy and happy looking. While I totally agree the monsters who have put these small animals through these horrible things in this video all deserve to loose their jobs and burn in Hell for eternity, I still have a bit of faith in pet and supply stores. In my PetSmart, most small creatures had their own cages, and those who didn’t had two or three at most. I saw this with guinea pigs and dwarf hamsters. My Syrian hamster was from PetSmart and she was healthy, happy, and friendly the moment we got her. She was also housed in her own cage. We need to attack the individuals who are mistreating animals, not the community.
Gassing is probably the most humane way to kill mice in large quantities for feeders, it could be worse.

The problem with refusing to buy these critters at these stores…is that some terrible future owner will instead buy them. Guaranteeing the animal lives a nightmarish life until it’s death.
I had to save a baby cavy from my local store, when I witnessed him being clearly way too young to be sold - and helplessly gnawing on the metal bar inside their cage. Since they give them no privacy, chewing supplies or decent nutrients - I went with my instinct and got him.
He’s approximately 7-8 months old now, and still extremely skittish and afraid of everything. Thankfully he integrated with my senior male pig and they have a great bond.
Even after daily routines (handling, petting) a massive area to enjoy, plenty of twice daily organic veggies, quality hay, kibble and mentally stimulating toys…he’s only made slight progress over time.
Which leads me to believe that he must have went through some terrible stuff coming from one of these ‘farms’. And it’s such a shame.

+Touhoulicious But there are so many bad ones that have been exposed, and not many good ones. The real solution is to never buy an animal when millions are euthanized every year in shelters across the country because they weren't adopted. There is no excuse not to adopt.

I ALMOST got a job at Pet's Mart. I even called the manager and she pretty much guaranteed me the job. However, there was some issues with the store's link and I was unable to submit the last of the paperwork. I'm SO GLAD I didn't get the job. Also ever since I watched this video about a year or two ago I stopped buying from Pet'smart, Petco, and other large business of the sort.

I have guinea pig and it breaks my heart that that is what the piggies and other animals go through. I got my piggies from petsmart and I’m thankful that they didn’t die but apparently the had a pretty harsh past but now they are living the best life possible. Also when I got them from petsmart they had ringworm!

Yeah some snakes and lizards will only eat thawed, previously frozen, mice or rats. Some suppliers will gas the rodents because it is a quicker and humane way to put them down. I watched a video on a rodent supplier who made frozen feeders for reptiles and he went through the entire process of how they gassed the rodents. After gassing them, he would seel the rodents in bags and freeze them. If I remember correctly, they use carbon monoxide gas to dispatch the feeder rodents.
The fact that there people don’t have the respect for a living thing is just... I have No words for how upset 😢 I am seeing this video because my cat came from petco and she had trusting problems the first 3 weeks we had her so that just proves how bad the treat there animals And get this when she finally trust you she gets attached as if she can’t live without you! And I’m sorry if I ranting but as a 11 year old girl I love/animals with all my hurt so for them to be treated this way is cruel and a I write this I am in tears 😭 just thinking about those poor animals..... Peta tells the truth all the time. They are here to help lower animals, not people animals. If it were not for Peta and the other legitimate animals organizations we would be so far less of a culture than we already are. Being in the laboratory industry in medicine, I've seen the horrors at the labs and have been silenced by some of my peers. I've been chased during continuing education credit (CE credits) when I'd leave my seat to wonder around at UT Southwest Medical Facility in Dallas Texas and chased down and threatened by security guards. I will never stop fighting for animals. Even during my schooling and training in my selected field I had arguments with under-educated teaching assistants on the view about Peta which they said were evil people. They are teaching that Peta is evil, that in 1990. If you are outraged by this then do more than not buy anymore pets from stores, target the stores who sell them until they don't sell animals any longer. That goes for breeders too. Do you really think breeders sell every single one of their breeding off springs? The answer is clearly NO! So, what do they do with them?

This is so sad but it’s true I actually went into my local Petsmart and adopted a half blind hamster who was it to be returned to the smell I had not had taken her and she was given to me for free because the employees knew what would happen to her I managed to save her. I walk into most any Petco or Petsmart and ask them for their disabled pets that are due to return they will more than likely give them to you for free to prevent them Horrible death they can’t sell them because they’re sick or injured so less cases they will give them to you for free
Hello! I am a little confused here. Didn't these horrible places that supply Petco and Pet smart get shut down after this? They got busted for animal cruelty? (I thought I heard that they got shut down, did they?) anyway if they did get shut down, where do Petco get their animals now?

Callie Priebe Yea as soon as this came out everyone dropped this supplier and from what I heard they went out. Don't know where they get the animals now but they all know about this and if they are not paying attention to suppliers then they are fools. Good luck.

Well I'm done with Petsmart I prefer to rescue animals then buy them we have 2 dogs we rescued 1 was from the shelter the other was from an abusive neglective home
Argos567 i heard those pet stores quite often toss some of the live pets in the dumpster. even had a guy one day face to face tell me he found a really nice iguana in a petco or petsmart dumpster almost dead and he nursed it back to health but not before bitching out the manager in the middle of the store. maybe not all stores are guilty of that but you never cant tell which ones are for sure.

I bought two hamsters from petco about 7 months ago, recently on of the hamsters had a huge tumor on its leg, I was thinking that oh it’s fine she is just growing, is this what they all do, I realized she was dying, I looked up all of the things I could do to save her, but nothing was popping up, I think maybe her guys went to her leg? About a month ago when this was all starting, she was getting slower and was not able to eat I fed her by hand but she just want taking it, she later died in my hand right away as I was seeking medical attention, now that I know that these pet stores do this sick stuff I’m never going there again AND may I add the hamster always had a little bump so it wasn’t me that did it but it was petco,
