- Jason Cammisa is back - not only driving the MAT New Stratos, but explaining what made the original Lancia Stratos a legend. Learn what makes this carbon-fiber supercar even better than the Ferrari F430 it's based upon - from its Pininfarina design to its extensive wind-tunnel testing and development.
The Stratos story begins in 2002 when Chris Hrabalek, Lancia enthusiast, created an homage car for his senior project in automotive design at the Royal College of the Arts. One of the backers of that project, German billionaire Michael Stoschek, wanted one.
Hrabalek and Stoschek teamed up with Pininfarina Special Projects, spending untold millions to develop the New Stratos. Based on a Ferrari F430 but shortened by 8 inches in the wheelbase, the new car wears carbon-fiber body panels and no fluff. It weighs 110 pounds less than the 430 Scuderia - the lightweight version of the F430.
This New Stratos has a 6-speed gated manual transmission. Modifications to the 4.3-liter Ferrari V-8 bump output to 540 horsepower. No carpets or sound deadening make for a visceral experience, and the car's incredible looks and insane proportions complete the experience.
Up to 25 examples of the New Stratos will be produced by Manifattura Automobili Torino. MAT, as it's abbreviated, was founded by Paolo Garella, who served as Special Projects Manager at Pininfarina during the New Stratos project.

Hands down the best automotive journalist on the interweb. Hopes he makes enough out of this to buy the Stratos. He’s earned it. Twice over. Original, passionate, honest and knowledgeable to the point where your brain stem tingles. Kudos to the entire team for the quality of these pieces.
I really hope this channel grows because it's up there with the best as quality. As a bonus we get Jason, what's not to like?

60k for a Corvette or 750k for a chop job on a Ferrari. Plus you actually have to have the Ferrari to begin with. Somehow, I don't think that's a strait comparison.

Sure it's great that Corvettes are going to be mass produced MR platforms, but sticking the engine behind the driver isn't going to by itself make it anywhere near as special as this.

The Lancia Stratos is a beautiful car, have only ever seen one in my life and that one was actually being driven on the road! Great to see a modern interpretation.

The Alfa 4C, when viewed from the side, has the Bertone line similar to the Stratos.
Small, wide, and short, it's the perfect platform for a new Stratos.

I have a great respect for Luca di Montezemolo. He did amazing things in Ferrari. But trying to kill the Stratos project was the worst bulls**it of his life.

As a 70's kid I LOVED the Stratos, and there was 1 in Houston,texas that I actualy ALMOST got to buy. UNFORTUNATLY , I pulled the trigger on a 67 GTO instead, and have kicked myself in the ass ever since. The Stratos was just a bit more than I could afford, not to mention they were no longer imported and the one I looked at needed REAL work to make it street worthy again. I WILL one day have one though.
