      Its dreadful he just ran the rod around the joint with the rod touching the metal zero penetration

    • @LowLightVideos
      @LowLightVideos 4 года назад

      @@jacobj6376 I would have used more amperage, but I think we can see at 3:16 that he had some penetration; also he said that it was his first time.
      If I see crap I vote down, and don't comment because they block you; there's so many worse welds to criticize (even on well known channels), I think we need to wait to see where this ends up after some practice.
      It's easy to find far worse than this.

    Thanks for the concerns about the smoke plume and the risks. I'm mindful and aware of the hazards and we use vents in our shop. However it messes with the audio while filming so I held my breath? Kinda? We should have explained that in the introduction but failed to. Thanks for pointing it out. Good discussion for other videos.

    • @ryanjones9305
      @ryanjones9305 8 лет назад +5

      Ha! Ya right, hold your breath. I say the same thing every time I go to weld on some nasty galvanized...holding your breath is a horrible idea!!! I like your humor Bob. I like to put the fan behind me if I can so it's just keeping fresh air flowing through my hood and the nasties out of my nostrils.

    • @tomherd4179
      @tomherd4179 8 лет назад +1

      How about just using a fan to blow the smoke away. That is unless gas is involved, then just put the fan on super low away from your face.

    • @miltongwelch2707
      @miltongwelch2707 8 лет назад

      Whenever I stick weld with my everlast welder I try to have two fans going. One behind me to bring fresh air in and another in front drawing the smoke away. Where I weld unless I do this the smoke just churns and comes back around to where I am.

    • @ultimatu2130

      I use a vent in my shop and I just bought a ventilator mask to wear to keep some of the other stuff out of my lungs. They're bad enough thanks to my grandfather smoking like a chimney next to me as I grew up. Plus, my vent kinda fell out of the ceiling the other week and I'm not sure that the repair job they did was very good.

    • @LowLightVideos
      @LowLightVideos 8 лет назад +1

      +Bob Moffatt - For the purposes of recording a Video with good Audio try a conventional Home Fan (like a Pedestal Oscillating Fan, set not to oscillate) placed ~15 feet away.
      It's enough to push the smoke away without wrecking the Audio.
      Breath holding or uncomfortable positions affect the quality.
      Others: Don't substitute a cheap Fan for proper Equipment (with a Filter).

      Rob

    That looks really neat!!! After many years of just Tig welding stainless I got a tiny stick-tig welder and been trying out stick welding with stainless 3/32 rod with 308L-16 and soon will try 309L,.. it's really cool to be able to put together different alloys and that the visual outcome is nice and smooth. Dragging the puddle seems to work way better than what I was trying by pushing it (used to the Tig style). Thank you so much for the vid!!!!!

  • @solarfunction1847

    Just some added info that I found while researching what arc rods were needed to weld 316 to carbon steel. Some 308L applications may be substituted with 309L filler metal, but 316L or 316 applications generally require molybdenum and 309L contains no molybdenum. E309LMo-16 has a nominal composition (wt.-%) of 23.5 Cr, 13 Ni, a maximum allowable carbon content of 0.04, and a small addition of molybdenum. So if you are welding 316 to carbon steel you need to buy E309LMO.16 welding rods.

    Nice demo. Being retired from the heavy equip repair trade all my life I have almost from day one of welding used my Bernard twist lock holder on a lighter 10' whip line that can be attached to the main heavier welding cable very quickly. More maneuverability, less weight fatigue and you can bend the rod in position with a better grip. Even have a regular small clamp style whip for ease of welding. Never see any weld videos showing this but I know most everyone in the field has one. Any thoughts? May make a good option to show to new welders. Thanks Ed K. Cleve. Oh.

    Bob I really appreciate your skill set and teaching style. Yu touch on a lot of things I totally would agree with, such as not banging the slag off to avoid injury AND to avoid irritating the instructor lol!! My question and youtube research lately has been regarding a stick welder I acquired recently. It is a small "FORNEY" 100 amp ac stick welder. So Ive been wanting to know what its capabilities are because I dont know if its me or the machine, but Im practicing with small 1/16" 7014 rods and the only thing I can do is lay a straight line on flat steel. Haven't been able to do a fillet or even weld two pieces of steel together! I just want to ask you- is it easier to run larger 3/32 diameter rods and what kind of material would be possible? I also tried to weld to large chrome vanadium 1/2" drive sockets together and that was a nightmare. The welds were not sticking... Could you make a video of you welding with a cheap ac buzz box welder showing what they are capable of? Or could someone point me to a similar video? Thankyou..

    Stick welding stainless or exotic metal like inconel and hasteloy is some of the most challenging of processes. There is no forgiveness. Any various in manipulation will be seen in the bead. It is very easy is to trap slag. Watch that slag. It is super hot and will make a nasty burn which can last months. If you run vertical up, dissimilar welds like to reject the filler metal and spit it back at you. I experienced this while stick welding cast stainless clips to carbon tubes with inconel. MIG downhand seemed to work the best for this dissimilar combination. The clips were designed to snap instead of ripping a hole in the wall of the tube. It was in the reheat bundles of a 1350 megawatt boiler.

    Thank you for creating these films for us. What I'm missing are the following: a word that explains the why; why was it necessary to bind a stainless steel plate to a carbon steel pipe?
    I don't know what carbon steel is. The definition of steel is elemental iron combined with some percent of elemental carbon at the foundry, and stainless steel has some percent of elemental chromium added to this also at the foundry.
    Drawings would be helpful. I can't see what's happening behind the glare of the welding flame. A drawing that explained the dimes pattern and how it may be achieved.
    Thank you for what you are creating for us.

    You did stick because of the question, but if one were welding the objects you chose would stick be the best choice? I sort of think so but am not sure. TIG would be my next choice and MIG (if one can get 308) last unless one has a high amperage welder. Not sure if a 210A mig would get critical penetration.

    Looks like you could've gone a bit hotter, but that's a good test for that machine at 100 amps. What's the max it will run on 115v? I wonder how many 1/8" rods you can run at 100 amps before you hit the duty cycle on that esab. What brand rod did you run. I actually really like the 309 stainless for a lot of reasons outside of carbon to stainless. That heavy slag will dang sure stick to your skin! Bob, you need a little box fan to blow that nasty plume of welding fumes away from your mug, especially with stainless. Hexavalent chromium brother.

      @@davidlixenberg5999 Duty cycle is the amount of welding time before the machine gets to hot and cuts out use to happen a lot with older air cooled fanless machines but the new inverter fan cooled seem to do most jobs round the house.

    Can you start to do out of position with this? I just got a job with a contractor that uses 309 stick rod

    please bring your vacuum exhaust close(fumes) to your project, my father inlay acquired Lymphnode cancer from no exhaust vac system close enough to his welding table.

    Is there a rod that i can use on this that works other things? Like general steel welding. Or cast steel.
    Rather not just use it once then have the extra go to waste.

      @kf8575 3 года назад

      309 work OK for cast steel, providing you use a decent preheat (also post heat if you can) also 312 works well.
      Wouldnt bother using them for general steel welding though

    I had to stick some stainless once. You're right when u say uphill doesn't work. What's a guy supposed to do in a situation where that's what you have to do? All my horizontal and flat welds turned out great but the vertical up was a nightmare.

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 8 лет назад

      Depends on the rod brand in my experience. Some will run really good out-of -position.

      Vertical stainless is tricky because the material heats up really fast compared to mild steel. Try using a small diameter rod like a 3/32 and making sure to let the material cool between passes. Another option is to have a amp control in hand and adjust the amperage up or down to compensate and prevent your weld from dripping down and forming "grapes "

      Bob isn't this uphill problem what pulsing features in many welders are supposed to help with (among other things like work piece warping )? I hear alot of people saying that Pulse is a useless gimmick to sell welder units for a higher price.

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 8 лет назад

      This pulsing was from erratic wire feeding. Pulse wire feed settings on the machine settings are very beneficial.

    On the aluminum rod preheat a little. Not to much it work better. The heat spreads fast
    7018 would still weld fine on SS. S6 wire feed works fine too. As far as strength goes. Procedures are for " procedures "

      KIM COVENEY sure those work well, until you have a few hot/cold cycles and the welds crack from the stainless heating and cooling faster than the weld

    In the process of heat treatment after some cycle of quenching process why welding break from MS plate.
    Weld stick on the SS material
    Plz Sir provide me solution

    Is there a practical way to use the stick process for stainless to cast iron? I'd like to see it, if there is one..

    id like to know how you weld hardened steel to mild steel with a mig welder ?flux cored? without gas Thanks
    in my problem is welding thin 1.5mm mild steel hollow rod to a hardened gear 3.5mm thick with a mig welder without gas
    the gear will have about 1hp of electric motor load or 1000watt 3000rpm max
    i barely have 5-10 minute of experience T_T
    Thanks for any help

    Can someone explain the splater? During some welds the splatter looks like a shower and on some it's really light. Thanks in advance.

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 8 лет назад +1

      Spatter is mostly determined by the type of rod without getting into machine settings. E6010, E6011 type rods are a spark shower. E6013, E7014, E7018 type rods are pretty smooth with way less spatter.

    • @chrisjones6165

      Bob Moffatt 6010 don't spark much when it's jammed in the pipe. I've actually had my autoshade turn off on root passes before

    Couple questions:
    Gas mix?
    What is the compositional difference between 308 and 309?

    I've done this in year's gone by and I have had the flux ping off in my face as it started to cool. Not nice when it goes down your shirt. Nice looking weld.
