This man's tuitional skillls are exceptional, listen very carefully and you'll become a top-flight welder. I noted that this rod runs very similar to flux-core wire. Key point of welding is ; look after the sides and the centre takes care of itself.' In 99% of all instances😉
Those rods are expensive. Practice costs $$$, but once you get the hang of it, you will make some beautiful welds. I like this rod. It goes on smooth, sounds good and doesn't spit dingleberries. The end product looks like jewellery.
What kind of problems were u getting? Because I keep getting slag right down the middle ever 5th rod or so. I think I was weaving to wide but I still get the slag every once in a while
Eldinf stainless with these rods is a completely different cat to skin than welding on just carbon. It's a lot wetter, and a lot hotter. Great video and great information
Thanks for the info on starts. It's a little bit like how I strike a 7018 ver. Guess I was doing the 309 wrong, looking forward to trying this technique. For anybody that's practicing I had a few old timers tell me whip from side to side and count; one two three. Lays in super tight! (If you need a mental guide to go by.)
Thanks for the tips. I'm in a welding class for my job and having a damn hard time with this 309 stuff. Been at it hard for 3 days and I just can't get it to look decent
Taking a test next week on stainless. I've NEVER welded stainless, your vids helped me pass my last jobs test. I'm super nervous about it since I never did stainless and dont know the heat. All I know is I'm using 3/32 and 1/8 rods. Any advice is desperately needed. Test is on Tues of next week.
I have a carbon tube with some kind of coarse textured coating and a stainless flange so I hope this works out. I’ve tried some practice pieces, but now it’s go time. I’m goin in; wish me luck.
Nice one Hjalmar. I use 312l-16 rods a fair bit and those are a b*tch to run in position just like 309. Flat and horizontal no problem, but vertical up and overhead if you don't do it right you get a lot of slag incusions.
I always thought I had done something really wrong and I was being punished when I had to run 309 vertical. You did a fine job, looked as good as any I've seen and better than I've done myself. By the way, what did you do wrong? Good video!
Can you still get proper penetration with the zig zag method here? I passed my visual test the other day but failed penetration and one of my instructors told me it was due to the zig zag technique, so I was told to use the triangle shape to weld but it's just not clicking. Welding 308 on carbon steel
i gotta run this on a pipe test this week. not looking forward to it. never ran it and the pipe i gotta weld is massive. atleast i know it can be welded well. thanks for the vid
Where do you have the dig set? And are you E+ or E-? Your welds look great. I will be testing in the next couple of days for 3F and 4F carbo to carbon with 309L. Just looking for any pointers
The rod must get red hot like that due to the higher resistance/lower electrical conductivity of the rod itself? Great video, thanks a lot for making it.
Awesome video as usual also with stainless stick welding vertical up another weave pattern for that process is the triangle weave it prevents slag entrapment plus it ties the weld toes in really nice ,plus put some safety glasses on stainless rod slag likes to pop off 🤕🤕🤕
For me it was Tuesday. Those were probably Lincoln's red Baron rods if I recall after the grade of rod ex: 309-16 or 309-15 the -16 runs better than the -15 vertical up it makes a big difference
Another great video. Watch out for that stainless slag buddy. It will ping off without warning and get you wherever you stand - usually on your lips! Ouch.
Stainless steel slags are different from mild steel slag. I was welding stainless once and the slag popped and hit my eye once, wasn't that serious, i had to wash it off with some water but definitely something to keep in mind of the next time i weld stainless. But then again always wear safety goggles when beating slag off.
@@JarrenW83 I couldn't agree more. Safety specs when chipping slag. In fact, at all times really. I'm not a safety Nazi, but a welder is not of much use if he/she can't see.

We usually tig stainless pipe at our shop. But sometimes we stick weld but all of the experience welders tell me that doing stainless stick welding in the vertical position is a no-no. Only flat or horizontal. Is this true? Cause obviously you can do vertical based on this guy's welds
I'm trying to learn and want to start with some exhaust pipe. I'm worried the exhaust pipe may be 409 stainless and I'm welding mild steel parts to it, so wanted to try with 3/32" 309l rods. Someone suggested 6011 but I'm worried the welds may be weak. Does my idea make sense?
