I mean it’s a quote. You don’t have any power over them, because it’s a song. It’s them speaking your words from your mouth. If someone reads off my rap lyrics. And raps them imma be like “that shits mine.” That can’t just change because someone’s reading it.
I agree though, you try to segregate the word. Be open to disparity which will direct more attention. And will undoubtedly be a roadblock in the future imo. They’re already limiting freedom of speech everywhere.
I’m not saying you have to accept it. I just feel dirty uttering the word in songs. Therefore I do not say it. But we have to be able to brush off words we can’t take.
Cause agitation is disenfranchised with reality.
Reminds me of black history month. We needed it because some of our heroes and feats have been forgotten. Though overtime we start to group everyone in that camp. Why don’t we study black history throughout the year? Why does it need to exist anymore?
It’s sad we have to build ourselves up from embryos to dirt and worms. Same applies here with progress. The progress we make, comes along with minor inconveniences. Not even solutions are perfect.

I have read pieces on both Q's perspective as well as other black authors and creators and while I respect both arguments, I do not agree completely with one or the other. For one, the idea that at the end of the day, words are just words and we can take away the negative energy surrounding them and reclaim it in a communal space is a powerful one, and it has been used across many communities of marginalized people within just the last 20 years. It is a incredible representation of the influence these creators have as community leaders and the way they can affirm their rights and abilities.
However, anyone coming from a place of privilege (based on socioeconomic class, race, or gender) can not completely understand the emotions and experiences that some have faced when encountering such speech. Basically, no matter if your intent is nonviolent or purely in jest, it is safer to not make assumptions about what memories (good or bad) that the listener has tied to said words.
I guess what I am trying to say is that if someone who is black says they do not have a problem with you using the n-word, that is not a "pass" for all black people; they are not a representative of the entire black community who are as diverse in their values and opinions as any other group of people. Just like how if someone who is of the LGBTQ+ population says they do not mind you using the f-word, that does not give you express permission to use it in every circumstance.

I get it, I used to rap it cuz it was in the lyrics, but my black freinds obviously didn't like that, and I never used it outside of music, so it's not like it Needs to be said

Its a gentle one. Because its meaning is very unstable.
If it has too much meaning or if it has no meaning at all, or if its racist or nah..
So honestly the girl thought the word has no meaning she didn’t even noticed she sang it.
And k dot caught up to it

I feel like people aren’t looking at this situation from all of its perspectives. Sure Kendrick is facing criticism now for telling her not to say the word but think about how much criticisms would have faced for just letting her say it. Kendrick speaks of racism in almost all of his songs and he is a staple of the black community. If he just let her say a word that most of the black community perceive as racist then he would have taken harsh criticism from a lot of the black community for not correcting her behavior. I don’t see a situation where Kendrick could have gotten out of this without facing some sort of backlash. I think he handled it in the best way he possibly could have.

This still pisses me off, five years later. She was just a fan who wanted to have fun and look cool, everyone there knew there was no hate in her heart, Kendrick most of all. He's the one who let her up there for that song, all signs point to him wanting this to happen so he could cut her off. We've accepted this norm that the n-word is a perfectly fine and acceptable thing to say, and you're not allowed to have any problems with someone saying it. Unless you're not black. Then the presses have to stop, then the world has to come down over it.
We're all descendant from Africans anyways. This attitude towards the word is 100% more harmful then helpful. Either it's all ok, or none of it is.

I feel like Kendrick should’ve handled it better but his response is understandable. She wasn’t a racist at all but if she truly loves and respects hip hop and the majority of people who make she shouldn’t be saying that word. If a rapper has a problem with it they should just state before the show, “ aye, my white hip hop heads I love y’all but I don’t wanna hear y’all sayin the n word.” Lmao, some white kids just don’t get it cuz they’re so detached from racism, someone needs to just explain to them why it’s not cool instead of attacking them in front of a packed arena like brooooo that’s just very dangerous to do.
