I remember seeing this race live, I was 10 years old. When Bekele had around 40 meters left, I yelled: "He's not gonna make it!" (I was new to athletics, and it seemed to me that there was too little time left to finish the race in under 26:20) My friend sitting beside me said: "No, he's gonna make it!" Turned out he was right. It's a good memory, and the first world record in athletics that I ever witnessed live. Had I only known at the time, that no one would come close to the record in 15 years.
(I may specify that by "live" I mean live on tv. I've never been to Belgium. I watched the race on television, back in the good ol' days when Diamon League was called Golden League)
Great job on your Bekele video documentary...with his WR, Titles and now his 2:01.41...makes him the greatest of all time...I do believe in 2021...Cheptegei from Uganda may get very close to 26:20 in the 10000m. What an absolute joke 😂😆🤣 What in the cheating are those wavelights on the track? That's a computer pacing system guiding him. No wonder why he is on pace on each lap. Cheptegei’s 10,000-meter record (26:11.00), except for his final 1,000-meter stretch, every other 1,000-meter split was within a second of 2:37, a metronomic mark that would be difficult to replicate with just a watch. What an absolute joke. It took a whole organization with research and cheating technology to get to Kenenisas records. This itself should tell you guys Kenenisa and Haile are the greatest runners you have ever seen.
Fantastic ! Always loved Bekele. Nobody will ever break that world record. He only made one mistake in his career, which he admitted and that was the Olympic 5000m final of 2004. He should have pushed the pace a lot earlier than he did to run the finishing speed out of El Guerrouj. He made up for that mistake in 2008 with a simply devastating piece of running in the 5000m Olympic final, which has been noted as Bekele's best ever race.
