  • Kenenisa Bekele's distance running career is perhaps the greatest in history. With his 23 Olympic, World Championship and World Cross Country medals, Bekele is clearly in a league of his own.
Unfortunately, form 2017 - 2018, Bekele had multiple problems with is marathon career. With 3 racing failures and various leg and hip injuries, Bekele's distance running future seemed like it might be over.
However on September 29, 2019, Bekele ran one of the greatest marathons in history with his 2:01:41 performance. This time put Bekele only 2 seconds behind the Great Eliud Kipchoge who ran a 2:01:39 just one year earlier.
This marathon was absolutely incredible as countless fans throughout the world were shocked with this fantastic time.
Do you think this is the greatest marathon comeback in history?
    We sure do.
    Thanks for watching!

Bekele may not be as well spoken as Kipchoge but the fact that he has endured through all his adversities in the past decade and still not given up say a lot about the weight of his character. I have always considered him the GOAT but my admiration for his mindset is now even greater than my admiration for his accomplishments

There's Paul Tergat, Haile Gebrselassie, and a few other select athletes, who have achieved just as much in their career, as Bekele, yet they finished their careers at the top, retiring competitively when they were at the top of their game.
Kenenisa Bekele has had a very up and down marathon career, being overshadowed by Eliud Kipchoge, so he cannot be looked at the greatest in his sport of athletics.

Very interesting video! In some sense Kipchoge's story is simple: his whole life is running. Live simple, train hard.
Bekele runs, and runs ...... a f*cking hotel (among multiple businesses). I would get it if he did that after retiring, but he's doing both at the same time, while maintaining world-class fitness and almost breaking the "untouchable" marathon world record. Such a unique individual!

GoldenBoy if you watched the video, Bekele was quite involved in his business dealings, and ate a lot of hotel food instead of following a diet.
The business distractions definitely bothered him too. That’s why when he moved to Netherlands and away from business distractions he got back into top form.

I have great respect for Kipchoge but in my personal opinion, Kipchoge and Bekele are not in the same league when they were both in their primes when competing in the 5k and 10k track.
Yes, Kipchoge has also won Bekele before in track events but those were occasional wins. Bekele almost totally vanquished every elite athlete in 5k and 10k in his prime, including defeating Kipchoge many times.
I have never stopped believing in Kenenisa Bekele from the time he made his marathon debut until today even though he could not complete a few marathons. I still believe that this is the man who will hold the World’s marathon record, just like his 5k and 10k.

And JO race is always tactical, they run 1st half too "slow" to chase WR (look Rio, slowest race ever for Kipchoge, still gold medal). Reasin in Rio, or Doha for World Champ was heat and moisture, Tokyo will be with same heat problem. They need colder air to run fast, that's why usually central England early april or central Germany late september Germany are ideal for perfect temperature 😉

Bekele himself in nN documentary says he was very disappointed not to break the world record. 2 seconds was " nothing" as you put it. Problems seems that early in the race people went out too fast so teamwork insofar as it exists for bekele wasn't there. Compare that to Kipchoge's WR race. This was a very interesting profile thank you very much

True greats of athletics, have to leave the stage leaving a lasting legacy of success.
Both Mohamed Farah and Kenenisa Bekele have struggled to maintain their almost unbeaten form.
Your only as good as your last race, so to speak, and if the 2021 Berlin Marathon is anything to go by, Kenenisa Bekele is bowing out of the sport in a less than glamorous fashion.
Yes he has had a magnificent athletics career, but he has had a lot of poor results as well, so will he seen as one of the greatest.
    Maybe not

  • @betsysindani3171

The greatest marathoner is Eliud. Distance running Gebreselasie. He beat Gebreselasie due to age. Mo Farah is another legend. Mo is a VERY clean runner and doesn't ride on group support just like Gabreselasie and Tergat. Bekele always had Ethiopians blocking other Athletes to allow him take off. They tried this on Eliud in Paris it didn't work. He finished third. He is a great athlete yes, we RESPECT him but with negative tactics. Mo runs on his own with no team support and wins. That's what competition is about.
