Im surprised they didnt mention when the old man Doctor says before the war he was a father and grandfather but no he is just a doctor. and Doctor replies "Yeah, i know the feeling."
"There was a man there" makes perfect sense in the context of British culture. It's something we all know, even as kids (I was 13 when this episode first aired), that some evacuees were treated badly by the families who took them in. A lot were used as slave labour or starved or physically abused. So, there were kids who were sent to the countryside for their safety who ran away back to the cities being bombed because they felt safer there.
I'd never considered that American kids probably don't have to learn as much about the intense cultural impact of WWII as British kids do! I think Eric did pick up on it, but in a sense of "he can't have meant the bad thing...", where we're here to point out "yeah, he probably meant the bad thing."
@@mintygrey I never knew about this, I thought children were just sent to their grandparents. I guess it sad and kinda ironic that most of what I knew about children being sent off to the countryside was from a show called horrible histories, but yet it never told me about the horrors of this(if you wondering what it told me: It was that apparently most children at time, had never heard of or saw cows and other livestock animals before. So they had very bad reactions). I do wonder if anyone was evacuated or moved in Australian when Japan was trying to invade.
My grandad was one of them. He was sent from London to Wales. The stories he would tell were horrific. He was split from his older sister and two younger brothers. He was made to work without much food or rest and would be beaten for the smallest thing. He befriended a group of boys, who would all go out and try to find food. One story will live with me forever. They were climbing down the cliffs to reach a seabird colony (for the eggs) and one boy fell. He was 6 years old. The evacuations saved lifes, but there was definitely a down side, and it was just your luck where you ended up.
The "there was a man there..." line, I believe it was meant to imply he was abusive in some fashion. Especially given as you said the boy preferred to come back to an active war-zone rather than stay there.
This two-parter is still one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes ever. I remember first time I watched it - I was absolutely terrified of it. I still am, tbh. Glad you guys enjoyed it! Especially Eric's reaction to John Barrowman showing up was amazing (though I do wonder if you missed his butt-slap because you were all watching Eric. xD). I liked where the conversation was going in the end there, talking about Mickey and Rose and such. I think there's some legitimate points on both sides, but yeah, at this point I'm personally like "Rose, you should probably... break up with Mickey. Just so that there's some closure.". And LONO! I loved the editing for this one! It can't have been easy, with such a cramped episode, but I thought it worked really well! And all the small zoom-ins and such were hilarious. And while it's a change, I thought the footage cutting in and out worked very well for this one. :) I always have a hard time talking about the first half of two-parters, so I'll leave off with saying that I'm looking forward to next week a lot.
Freaking Finally!!! 9 weeks waiting for this damn episode. At this episode I was so sold on Doctor Who, that are-you-my-mommy-thing creeped me out for days
I've been looking forward to Erik getting to this point since long before they ever decided to watch Doctor Who! 😀 I think they left it unsaid, but implied, that the boy who referenced the man on the farm was abused in some way.
Moffat's debut episode was memorable and iconic. The Empty Child will forever be one of the best episodes of Doctor Who. also I just realized that Moffat introduced Jack as well as 'spooileeers' - two of the best New Who characters
This was when I fell in love with Doctor Who as a whole. 11 was my first Doctor, but while I was catching up, this two-parter basically sold the show for me.
Probably 1 of the best episodes the show had ever produced. It's creepy with a great villain, the empty child, and of course introducing Handsome Jack into the show, 1 of the most well known and fan favorite characters. I love this episode and the Doctor Dances
There are times when the perfect summation already exists so from TV Tropes: Say hello to Steven Moffat, the drunken captain of the oil tanker full of nightmare fuel that's headed full speed ahead straight for the rocky coast of your dreams.
I'm super late with this comment, but I was so surprised that you recognized John - I never realized he was in anything other than Dr Who and Torchwood.
+MrGustyGamer _"true, but season 8 was a travesty."_ Really? I thought _Deep Breath_ was generally considered to be very good, and _Listen_ is often regarded as a Masterpiece. As for the finale... There are more Episodes in S8, of course, some good and others.... not as good, but those weren't written by Steven Moffat.
I think the writer fell in love with the character (Clara) a bit too much. Or she was the writer's embodiment in the story. A Mary Sue. Or both. I love Moffat's writing normally. Loved his stuff on Sherlock. Loved The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances -- he defined the Doctor for me as the man, er, Time Lord, who did everything so that 'everybody lives' But for the life of me, I couldn't force myself to like Clara. I tried. Just couldn't. I don't think I'll ever stop being cross with them for writing Kate Stewart as if she were dumb just to make Clara look clever. (Suspended airplane scene at UNIT anyone?) A Lethbridge-Stewart deserved better!
JustSomeRandomGuy Online You may not like his writing, but saying he ruined the show is a pretty baseless claim. Lots of people, me included, enjoy it greatly.
I've been waiting for this episode since you started reacting to Doctor Who! It's still one of my all time favorite episodes. So freaky. I'm with Eric. I would've started throwing shit at it. My first reaction was, "Ahh! Kill it with fire!"
I mentioned this on Patreon when the first episode was available, but I would love for you guy to make a list of actors and actresses you notice from the DC and Marvel universe.
Ali Irfan "Thanks" "Thanks for what?" "Exactly" That part pissed me off so much, and especially in Boom Town when she has the nerve to get jealous of Mickey being with another girl despite treating him like shit beforehand
Rose is one of the worst modern companions. She was selfish, she was irritating, she was clingy, felt she was entitled to the doctor, treated Mickey and everyone else like crap e.g. Sarah Jane "Ooh he never mentioned ya" .
CAPTAIN JACK!!! I've been waiting so long for this one. I know they said they won't do it, but can they please make 2 reactions of DW every week? It's well into its 10th Series and at this pace, they'll need 3 years to catch up. And i'm still absolutely terrified of the "Are you my mummy?" kid, 5 years after i started Doctor Who
I love this episode because of the well done horror and intrigue elements. Also of course the great John Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness which is an awesome name by the way. The mask children are truly terrifying and creepy especially how people change into them. I also love how much of a flirt Jack is considering he is very handsome and knows it. I love his interactions with Rose and the information we learn about him. It was also interesting to see the Doctor and Rose separated for most of the episode. I really like how the Doctor shows off more of his intelligence in this episode. I also think the action was much better in this episode than what we have seen before at least on this scale. I loved this reaction and I can't wait for the next one. :-)
In relation to the farm thing you were discussing. When kids were evacuated a lot of the people that took them in did not want to, it was forced on them. There were a lot of incidents of children getting abused by the people that they were sent to during the war.
Love Eric and Shane's reaction to John Barrowman. Can't wait for their reactions for the other actors they might recognise in New Who. Especially the two regular actors that appear in Series 5. That's going to be a very long wait.
just in case you havent searched by now, John B. gets a dr.who spin off series as the main alien for his own set of companions. that series gets a reference in the tenth doctors series.
OJWH The spin-off could take place in the past , it could take place in a different time-line. They already know there's a spin-off with Jack in it anyway, they just didn't know he was in the main show. So no , it isn't spoilers. OJWH A good story doesn't have to have to threaten death. A lot of shows and books have spin-offs set on the past. I read one just yesterday , and it was very well compelling. It's all danger and death with people today. Jack CAN'T die anyhow , so your "isn't compelling" argument still applies to him.

In life, a son will bury his Father.
In War, a Father will bury his son.
Captain Jack Harkness is one of the best characters in the show.

Time Lord = A rank within Gallifreyan society where the Gallifreyan man or woman is genetically altered.
Time Agent = A human time cop
Well I think it'd be more correct to say that one is a species and the other is a job.
Time Lords aren't a species. They're Gallifreyans who achieve a specific rank and then are genetically modified as a result.
MyAbridged I'm not doubting you, but where did you learn this?
Jamie Shush - from clasic show

10:10 Ahh that good old Gaius from merlin, still a physician from show to show
That's what I thought too!
Omg. At the purple light Calvin said Kilgrave. Kilgrave is played by David Tennant, who also plays the Tenth Doctor.
😁
I'm excited for all the reaveals of actor's they'd know :)
We've gotten Barrowmens
Now David Tennant, Alex Kingston, Arthur Darvill,

Jude Miller yes! really nice edit! thank you
"YEAH I WOULD" with Shane's face on Aron was my favorite
Finally! Jack Harkness :D
*Captain
naamanoona ah yes, the most sexy character in the show.
Hi
Too bad it's til season 3 that we get to see their reaction to AG in Daleks in Manhattan. They get to see him before he got all famous.
Stop it!
Barrowman is here, finally
Episode 9: In which the boys of Blind Wave find a familiar face
Do they know about Series 2 I wonder....
Safiry Productions who is it, name the character not the actor.
Lord Omega Harry Potter actors? I don't remember any of the Harry Potter cast in Doctor Who...
Tennant isn't in s1 know
79.03.13 well he is, just at the very end.
I've been looking forward to Erik getting to this point since long before they ever decided to watch Doctor Who! 😀

been waiting for the Empty Child reaction since you guys started Doctor Who.

17:37 What the fuck lol
"Captain Jack Harkness.... and who are you?"
The old doctor that looks after the victims will forever be Victor Meldrew for me now o.o
Yes. I was waiting for your reaction to Jack. I haven't watched Arrow, but I know he's in it. So I knew you'd recognize him.

The time lords are a species unique to one planet, the time agency is a galactic organization that people join.
yessssss!!! finally got to Cap'n Jack!! you're in for a ride
I HAD THAT EXACT SONIC WHEN I WAS A KID, IT HAD THE SAME BLOODY SOUNDS AND EVERYTHING
And this is the episode that got me hooked.
good ol baby face Barrowmen. I am always surprise when i see this episode.
Just realized that the human "doctor" was the man who played Gaius in the show Merlin!!
Yes! Getting to the good ones now.
one of my favorite early episodes
I was laughing so much, mostly because of the editing. Adding this to my favorites.
Mummy are you my Mummmy
...Quantum Leap is the one with Scott Bakula
...in regards to Rose's mother, don't forget her mom's comment about the "shop" she was working in was "don't go getting airs and graces"
Aka, don't go getting above yourself daughter, you're still "slag" council girl who will never do anything more than work in a shop.
Airs and graces...
The one with Bakula is Quantum Leap. So good.
The Time Agency arose in the wake of the Last Great Time War after the Time Lords fell. Completely separate and different.
The edits on this one were Fantastic.
14:28
Aww, he was so good for a while to have that bit, but they never turned him back on!
I forgot this episode was so soon, awesome
idk if youve seen it yet, Jack has a spinoff show called Torchwood
Flash is an expression used when someone does something flashy -suggesting they are doing something that is showing off. It's often used in situations where someone uses an expensive gadget.
The kid talking about the man on the farm is obviously supposed to have been molested.
Enjoy this truly awesome 2 parter!
This is the episode that started doctor who for me.
Quantum Leap~! I saw Scott Bakula at Comic Con. He did a panel with William Shatner. Bakula seemed to be terminally embarrassed by Shatner. haha
Yep this is basically when John Barrowmans career really takes off
Calvin getting up and grabbing Jack was so funny. It's exactly what I would have done. XD
Editing is on point. Well done!! Love it.
When I first watched this episode my older brother had to leave the room, it scared him too much.
Hell yeah, my favorite episodes of this season!
(this one and the next)
Yes Jack, one of my all time favourite characters in Doctor Who ❤I knew you lot would know him as Malcolm.... right? (Only seen the Musical crossover from Arrowverse) LOVED that you lot already had his Funko Pop 😂❤
i honestly can't wait for next week ^^
This is the episode that hooked me on DW
I was waiting so much for this reaction!
17:11 Aaron, stop trying to make fetch happen! It's not going to happen!
Lol. In Rose's defense, she did go in pursuit of a "lost child" lol
Found this vid by searching for DW reacts. I thought ‘These guys sound like table top gamers the way they are thinking through the scenes.’
Low and behold... well, looks like I’ve got something new to binge. 😉
Must’ve been hard to keep that Big (face) secret when Jack popped up😂.
Time Agents were first mentioned in the 1977 serial
"Talons of Weng Chiang" know Jack is the first one we've ever met on the show and honestly we don't know what they do really and bar a character from Torchwood s2 we never meet another one
Love the editing Lono!
Oh, hey, you'll see Malcolm in his youth. :)
Scott Bakula's show was Quantum Leap
Congratulations, you've just met the first psycholoigcally scarring villain, next one is in Season 3, Episode 7 I believe.
I don't know, the Absobalof was pretty visually scarring.
Welcome to the genius of Steven Moffat. Regardless of what some people say, he's by far the best writer this show has ever had.
Errr ...Robert Holmes ?
Jonathan Morris ?
Marc Platt ?
Agreed, though he's much better at wrtiing single adventures instead of over-arcing plots.
fistofan936 Robert Holmes would disagree
David Blyth he didn't do it regularly like Steven Moffat has
I wish the guy who wrote the Dalek episode had written more.
not gonna lie. this episode scared the fuck outta me. and it still does. now all these people in the comments saying "are you my mummy" is giving me PTSD of this episode
FYI, Captain Jack Harkness had his own series "Torchwood" that was fairly good but short-lived.
this episode terrified me as a kid
still does actually
I gotta say, I pour concrete ten hours almost everyday so I don't really have time to go out with anyone or really do anything, so these videos are pretty much the only hanging out, watching shows and gaming shit with friends I get these days, even though I've never met these guys haha.
Also I loved the callback joke the tenth doctor made about this encounter, don't wanna spoil it but if anyone remembers what I'm talking about let's share a secret laugh.
ReaperCaliber: Twelve had one of those as well.
Thomas McDonald Really? I must have missed it or forgot, 12 was probably one of the most random doctors haha.
ReaperCaliber: Mummy on the Orient Express: 'Hello! I'm the Doctor and I'll be your victim for this evening. Are you my mummy?'.
Thomas McDonald Ohhh yeah now I remember, I laughed so hard, I love a good running joke tbh.
You guys should react to Merlin (BBC)!
I was 7 when this episode aired, and I literally had to hide behind my sofa. I had nightmares about it for weeks, and 12 years later I still get uncomfortable watching it
Same, I was even scared to watch this react because of the nightmares resurfacing XD
Never has an episode/two episodes of a series terrified me as much as Empty child did.
A great two parter that really creeps me out even now. Something about the gas masks is super spooky and nightmare inducing.
Oh finally, amazing episode. Really damn good.
One of the first stories that really turns the "creep" up to 11
where is the Badwolf foreshadow in this episode?
Now that you've met Captain Jack Harkness, you need to watch the spinoff Torchwood.
"Cheesy but freaky" not a bad description for a lot of DW
I was 5 when I watched this this is wild memories
Quantium Leap is the show your talking bout Calvin 16:35
Yeah when I first saw that kid.... nope
