- In 2001, hundreds of people pour into the Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island in Ohio for a Fourth of July celebration. Leon Wyszynski and his wife Mary Jane dine with friends on the terrace. Suddenly, the terrace gives way beneath them. One hundred people plummet 20 feet into the winery’s cellar.

@@devanschneider5752 I'm not going to give a name. All that I will say is this person works for a large fire department now in the State of Ohio. This person is very skilled at being a medic.
Ok no problem, I know my dad operated on the guy who passed and is also a firefighter in a big city and a skilled medic

Looks like the winery owners made the roof of the adjoining wine cellar into a terrace extending from the original verandah, without giving it sufficient reinforcement to deal with the extra weight. They deserve all the law suits they get.
I was wondering if they had good insurance policies, or they filed for bankruptcy and it was 'too bad for the attendees'.
I'm sure the was a 'cap' on the insurance policies that wouldn't cover the majority of patients.
Reminds me of how the Mall in Elliot Lake, Ontario retrofitted a parkinglot onto its roof of which wasn't setup for the weathering and weight of vehicles on it, and over years, rain and snow melt mixed with salt from road salt in the winter corroded the supports causing a section of the roof/parkinglot to collapse (which I beleve killed several people and seriously injuring some people).
@@danni1993 The company that owned the winery at the time is very much still around(Paramount Distilleries) and actually still own and sell wine under the Lonz name. So far as is known publicly they settled with the various people who were injured and the family of the one killed, though it can be inferred that the settlements were substantial.

My mom taught me to "always know how to get out" ... She meant know the fire exits and especially to KNOW the exit that is NOT obvious!

I looked it up... the real Lonz Winery is an amazing building - Spanish / Moorish Gothic with a Tower. The state of OH bought it a year after the collapse but it did not reopen (now as a state park) until 2017.
There are seriously so many underground caves & abandoned cellars under Ohio that I'm stunned the state hasn't collapsed in on itself

I wouldn't get too wrapped up in that, their recreation here is hilariously inaccurate to the actual atmosphere of the winery. Drinks going out on that terrace were being served in plastic pitchers, not long stem wine glasses.
I’m a resident on the island and Even tho the accident was fatal, the parties that happened there were not as fancy as they seem, it was more like have a drink and get drunk. Also what they don’t explain in the video is that a guy got crushed and died by a pop machine falling on top of him.

The thing is that the hospitals in that area are pretty small. Just two nearby, in Port Clinton and Sandusky. I never liked that place, it always seemed rickety to me. This recreation makes it look much nicer and smaller than it ever was

I was taught to look into this by my father who ran the health department for the state of Michigan. Don’t be stupid, honestly. There’s an expression “if you want to get sick, go to the hospital” and it’s not for no reason.

You would think if the owners are building a terrace, there would be permits required and inspection of the construction. Unless no one calculated the weight of that many people on the terrace.
jthoen61 I’m pretty sure the terrace was old because of how it look so it might of gotten the crack overtime and as you said the weight of the amount of people on the terrace

There were a total of 75 people injured and one death. Isn’t that number horrifying on its own?

Seems odd you wouldnt have buildings and additions inspected and maintained. In the uk you have to have a structural engineer to sign off the new building exstention even if it's just a deck or a terrace, still needs proper planning, and inspections and such. Very odd that you can just build something that will have people on it and not need to make sure it's safe.
Even if it isn’t required it should be common sense
I know this comment is a year old, but the northern states don't care about much. Multiple states don't even have mandatory lunches for associates, much less extra inspections for buildings. It takes a major event for them to even budge.

I just heard about this today from a man i met today on a ferry coming from kellys island (another lake erie island next to put in bay)
Naval rescue personnel are trained to save the most injured first & avoid the ones that are crying out to them to rescue them first instead, just like these medical personnel 39:02.
Having worked in construction for many years it's almost unthinkable for me to imagine that a concrete deck can just simply collapse under the weight of 100 unless those ppl were dancing or jumping up and down but it still should've been strong enough. Most likely it was shoddy construction & it probably was built 80 or 90 years ago by uncle Elmer & cousin Jr.
Thats what triage is. Fast Assement to get the fastest traumacare possible.
To not do like that, esp in a catastrophy would be really stupid & unusual!

Many errors came together that made this thing happen. First, when a small island always becomes inundated with tourists, there should have been a bigger presence of firefighters and EMTs on the island already before the tragedy. 2nd, of course was the most crazy part. How was the state of Ohio able to not have laws in place for year round inspections of buildings. Especially ones that were over 100 yrs old
Because they dont do that normally unless a violation is reported or someone sees something, this is an island not downtown Chicago with skyscrapers!What exactly would they have iinspected on a concrete slab terrace?? the concrete and it's steel rebars in it were what failed as was the fact that 100 people piled onto this thing that should have been limited to 50

It makes me wonder...how many of the injured were actually in a sitting position as they were rescued? All the faces show that blood ran down from forehead to chin. If they were lying down, the blood would have ran to the ear area. Just an observation. Did anyone else think of that?
