  • The night of October 16, 1998 will long be remembered as one of the worst nights of flooding in Texas history. Raging currents, howling wind and rain, make the nightlong search and rescue effort that much more difficult. Rescuers must battle the elements to save victims suffering from hypothermia stranded in overturned vehicles and flooded houses.

Problem is that not everyone has the ability to evacuate when mother nature turns on us. The poor and disabled might not have a way to get out or the ability to move at all in the case of those that are disabled.
I'm just glad that I live in a place that rarely see's extream weather that requires evacuation becuase I have no car, no friends that could drive, no family near by, and I dont know my neighbours well enough to get help (and what I do know is that they're all families).
In the event of an evac, I'd be stuck in my stupid little first floor apartment (which at least is in a 7 floor concrete and steel building built in the 1970s) unless they setup something at a school or community center.

And yet, people don't think that about that plague we have going around right now. "Risk YOUR life and your parents and your kids? My face is delicate and needs to be free! NO I'm not vaccinated...why would I do that?!"
Ironically, "Leave when you're told to" is a problem for face-delicate people, too. For the info of anyone confused, there are many people who think that the First Amendment protects you from being told off for your stupid actions. No, it prevents the GOVERNMENT from oppressing you. Corporations are 'legal people' and are free to refuse your business...they can 'oppress' you as much as they wish to; you are free to not spend money there as much as you wish.
In less-stupid news; those poor rescuers are such heroes. "It's not fair that you risk my life, but I'mma do it anyway because you need to not die."

I’d obviously listen to that evacuation order and I would then evacuate. That is because when authorities such as firefighters urge you to evacuate they are doing so to keep people safe and they are telling you to evacuate for a reason likely because there is a danger such as a flood or a hurricane or wildfire approaching and therefore if you don’t evacuate then you or your family could get injured or killed. In addition by not evacuating you would also be putting first responders who are attempting to help you in danger as they could easily get injured or killed while attempting a rescue as for example they could be swept away by flood waters. Remember when authorities urge you to evacuate listen to them and evacuate immediately.

    • @roetheboat1
      @roetheboat1 8 месяцев назад +2

The guys on the rescue raft DID discuss this entire situation with the trapped firemen before they went to go grab the mom and daughter, so there has to be some serious reason.
You also need to keep in mind that the guys on the raft were volunteer rescue members where only one of them actually had any training to handle rapid water rescues, AND he was the only one wearing a wetsuit. It took them like an hour to an hour and a half to make the trip from the staging area to where the trapped people were AND the guys on the raft were having to paddle the entire time.
My guess is that they decided to not take as many people as possible because they were worried about being too tired trying to row the full raft back up the way they had come, and the volunteer rescue raft team might have been able to swap out some of the tired men back on the shore. The trapped firemen had been stuck outside for hours and were starting to suffer from hypothermia, so it's possible that they wouldn't have been all that useful in trying to row the raft.
It's also possible that they didn't want to fill the raft to its full capacity because of worries about getting stuck on debris due to the raft being heavier.
Regardless, both the volunteers on the raft and the volunteer firemen discussed how they should handle the situation, and for some reason they decided to do it that way. I highly doubt it was due to them making a dumb mistake.

If I was living in a house on a flood plain, especially an area that was known to flood periodically, I think I'd keep an emergency life raft in the attic or shed or something, the kind they use on boats. It might seem ridiculous on an ordinary day, but once that water starts flooding into your house all of a sudden it doesn't seem so absurd. An inflatable life raft with a reinforced bottom I think. And you could perhaps have an attachment point to anchor it if you wanted, depending on the environment. Anyway, just an idea.

A gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. A fish tank the size of your stove weighs a ton. That's the M in F=MV(2). Now add the speed. 6 inches of water moving at 4 mph can knock you off your feet. Most people don't realize that and sometimes it's the last lesson they learn in this life.

Peopled looked at things differently then for one simple fact (there probably were others too). They never had internet. They never saw with their own eyes the devastation of these events that had taken place previously. They only had memories and other people's stories. And those just weren't enough.
Today there is a tendency to swing completely over to the other side. We see these events so graphically that we live in a fear bubble and are too often afraid to take risks.
We need to find a balance.

i mean how can you drive your car, to a place which looks like a river and then keep driving until it stalls? What actually goes through your mind? Oh ok it's a road but at the same time a river let's go through it? Or you know that you live at a place surrounded by rivers it rains for so long and you stay. I mean you can pack you staff, go to a hotel somewhere just to be sure and if nothing happens you have wasted 400-500$ but if something happens you are safe. These people don't have any survival instincts at all?

He went on to say that the guys that were out there waiting to be rescued (the ones that original went out to save the stupid mother and daughter) had been waiting for HOURS already. Jesus, learn to listen to what you're watching.
