Normally I prefer videos that are longer the better but I really like the segmented nature of your videos as they give you space to ponder over the content between topics.
This series is revolutionary in presenting beautiful cleanly detailed architecture. I think of the "This Old House" show on PBS and remember how often I was disappointed by the boring conventional construction regularly shown on that program. I wish this 30 by 40 series was a weekly TV show. I'd watch it.
If you ever want to do a refresh on this ADU video, I'd love to help produce it for your channel. Lots of updates since 2015 and your audience is so big it could make a big difference to let people know how much is changing around the nation :)
The ADU, is one of the few higher density forms that I like, although separate they are very much similar to apartments but set within the single residential zone, great as you say for family members and a way of staying close to ones family but still having the necessary separation for good relations. I think this is becoming increasingly important as dual occupancy residency as at least in Australia property prices are so high very few young people are able to afford to purchase their own home. Much of this has to do with the lack of political will for change of policies but that's our current circumstances we find ourselves.
Thanks for this video! I think this trend of ADUs will continue to march upward, especially with CA's mandate for the entire state. Here in the Toronto area, our design firm only focuses on ADUs, and we've put in about 125 legal basement ADUs in the past couple of years.
Thank you so much for making this video!!!! Just a few questions if you can answer them. I’m planning this for Watcom County (Bellingham WA) so maybe it’s very different? It’s especially difficult since the property would not be within the Urban Village Zoning area which makes getting a permit unnecessary or maybe just easier. For JADUs it sounds like the requirements in terms of utilities would be much more lax. What would those be in general? Could I have a bedroom and a composting toilet without the kitchen and plumbing as a workaround to all the strict requirements? Would that still factor into the number of carport areas needed per dwelling? I was also wondering whether I would HAVE to live in the ADU if it’s just a room. Mostly hypothetical since this isn’t the plan I have in mind currently. I’m thinking of getting a property to rent out while I live in a DADU/JADU/ADU etc and I find it difficult to work out the details so this is very helpful!! I’ll probably think of more questions but if you’re willing maybe we can communicate offline or via email? Thanks again!
The only problem I have with your videos is I'm not used to Imperial measure as we use a combination but mostly metric measure in Australia but in the case housing we work in residential squares which 100 sq feet for 1 housing square. or roughly 3 meters x 3 meters.
lol no its ok, I am getting used to the imperial measure and I am going to have to learn Autocad programs in Imperial as I cant find any decent tutorials on youtube in metric.
WHY must it be "owner occupied' Stupid city regulations. This is a show stopper for many considering ADUs. What if the owner wants to take a job in another state for a couple years.
Minimum parking requirements and low density zoning to protect against "increased traffic" become a self fulfilling prophecy beceause needlessly spacing everything out from one another requires all trips to be made by car.

Thanks for the info. I'm attending a public forum and arguing for allowing ADUs tonight.

fascinating...makes perfect sense to make more of existing housing stocks...

Just an update the requirements are not applicable anymore. check with your local municipality about the ADU laws
I really like your videos!
TeamLowLife Brad thanks for watching & subscribing...cheers...
what does it legally mean to owner occupy.......can using it as a scondary home constitute it as owner occupied...
So basically a granny flat?

I should add metric subtitles, eh?

In Canada, we have schizophrenia - code shows metric but it all materials are imperial!
@@30by40 I know it's a somewhat long time ago but you haven't begun adding that yet, but it would be awesome if you begun adding metric subtitles

Hey- by any chance do you have the name of the ADU featured at 3:52?
Do you know if I can turn a rental garage into an Adu and use it as a home office
