- Step inside JUMA Architects founders and directors Mathieu Luyens and Julie Van De Keere’s family home in Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium.
“Sint-Martens-Latem is one of the most coveted villages in Belgium,” Mathieu says, “not only because of its green environment but because it’s a creative village.” It’s here Mathieu and Julie conceptualised their brick home, where they live with their two daughters and feline friend Cookie. It’s also where you’ll find their adjoining studio - all built around ‘unique and irreplaceable trees’.
A long driveway bordered by old leafy trees leads to three connected brick volumes; a double garage, the architects’ office and Mathieu and Julie’s family home. While they all share the same material palette, the buildings differ in size and form. “It’s always been a really special place because I grew up here,” Julie says. “That’s why the ideas of what we wanted to do came really fast because I was so familiar with the surroundings here.”
Julie and Mathieu were met with the challenge of a ‘far from ideal’ orientation when designing their home. They approached it with the same penchant for drawn-out and low forms as in other projects, leading to an elongated floor plan. “The house isn’t the biggest house you have ever seen, but it is used very intensively,” Matthieu says. The master bedroom with walk-in-wardrobe and ensuite are kept as a separate suite on the first floor, while every other space, including the children’s bedrooms, are located on the ground floor.
The kitchen is the heart of the home - a crossroad that connects all of the communal spaces. “It was important that the floor needed to be the same as the countertop and the countertop needed to be resistant enough to be able to cook,” Matthieu says. “We like the fact that you can use the stone-filled and not filled,” he adds. “This gives a different dynamic.”
Mathieu attributes the home’s relaxing atmosphere to the material palette. “I think it was important to show you can combine a lot of different materials, even if the different spaces are very close,” he says. An example the architect cites is the master bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite situated on the first floor. “Because those are the only rooms on the first floor and because of the materials and colours, this floor feels like a hotel suite,” he says. On the other hand, when seeking to recharge with family and friends, you’ll find Mathieu and Julie in the kitchen that connects to the outdoor pool area.
“Living here for a few years now, I just think I don’t want to change anything - I’m very happy with the way it is,” Matthieu says, with Julie adding, “It looks like the house has always been here…like it really belongs to its surroundings.”

This is just stunning. I loved hearing the family motifs that Julie and Mathieu incorporated throughout their home, a very special conversation.
An incredible home inside and out, filled with personal and sentimental objects. Thank you for your comment.
A beautiful film, that really explores what the home's location, the home itself and everything within mean to Julie and Mathieu on a personal level. I enjoyed listening to the value they place on connecting with the natural environment through design and how this in turn benefits their health and well-being.
An important message shared by Julie and Mathieu 🌿
Juma's innovative approach redefines spatial design with a perfect balance of modern aesthetics & functionality. A captivating project that also serves as a highly practical and comfortable space. Beautiful!
A captivating case study on clever planning and layout. Glad you enjoyed the film 😊
Exceptional design, lush greenery and all my favourite vintage products. Loved watching this film.
Filled with vintage pieces balanced with personal mementos from Julie and Mathieu's travels. A beautiful balance.

Absolutely agree, an exceptional modern home. So well designed for life, ocean views, the location, the landscape all architecturally aligned.
this house made me so happy. very beautifully designed
Thank you so much 😊
That , what looks to be a cobble stone drive way, looks
fantastic and with all of the greenery around. It is a very nice house.
Jeff
The long driveway bordered by old leafy trees forms a beautiful entrance to the home, thank you for your comment.
Impeccable execution and a beautiful balance. Kudos JUMA architects!
Thank you very much!
Creating a home that looks like heaven and fosters a peaceful living environment is a wonderful goal.
💯 a place to be peaceful and enjoy life
You can see they were influenced by MCM architecture and architects, Neutra and Wright books in the background as well. Solid balance and scale and subtle choices of materials and keeping the space to minimal use is extremely smart and done with purpose of their needs for a forever live/work space.
Great job!!
I like the classic white brick. Reminds me of modern movement in the 70s, where it used natural materials with clean, tall vertical lines.
Very true, JUMA have designed the home beautifully inside out. Thanks team estliving.com
I loved seeing the house set so well into the greenery. Juma made it merge into the landscape seamlessly. It looks so calm and relaxing. would love to visit ❤
Thank you so much 😊
This could be one of my favorite houses. Quiet, understated + luxurious.
To be honest: Beautiful house. That's for sure. But Sint-Martens-Latem, the village is foremost known as, perhaps, the most expensive village in Belgium. I'm not convinced that the creativity is that high as it was 50-80 years ago. But they still carry that label. So if you want to live there, you need a big bank account. Creativity is a bonus.
As Mathieu mentioned, it is a very coveted village indeed. What a privilege to live in a such beautiful space with an inherent connection to nature. Thank you for your comment!
That bathroom looked like heaven!!!
A striking primary ensuite with a natural stone bath and custom vanity. Glad you enjoyed the film! ✨
Sensible design philosophy that generates beauty for the natural setting.
The greenery visible inside out is so serene and beautiful. Thank you for following along, team estliving.com
What a handsome home. I was struck by the sound of the breeze slewing through the trees. When you brought up your mother I thought you were going to tell us how you accommodated her without a guest room. Is there a place in the home where one can look over or through the trees? I have noticed that a good deal of these modern homes are nestled into the landscape without views or a at least a borrowed one. I would find this claustrophobic over time.
A great insight and behind the scenes, felt so personal listening to the story. An amazing project and captivating to watch.
Thanks so much, well designed home. Stay tuned for more films. Best, team estliving.com
Gosh i love this house! it's so pure!
I wish these videos were longer. I feel like there is so much yet to see about the house but its not shown
So true, we often talk about making smaller series of films as there is so much we edit after full days of shooting. Thank you for your kind words and feedback. Stay tuned, team estliving.com
Yes please, longer videos would be perfect 🤍
Very beautiful house! It encapsulates the simplicity that we can have in life. Also, I love the serene atmosphere wrapped around nature and the soulfulness it harnesses. Stunning! Less is always more!
Thank you! 😊
It's a home where functionality meets artistic expression, resulting in a living space that is both sophisticated and full of character. ❤❤
A beautiful home
I've noticed that unassuming Belgium is home to a lot of the best architecture.
We would agree with you. Exceptional home design. Stay tuned for more, team estliving.com
The building feels like it's been embedded in the landscape, beautiful.
Julie and Mathieu's emphasis on nature and its benefits on our health are inspiring. Thank you for your comment! 🌿
Such a beautiful and inspirational House! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
this is a very dumb question, but I'm curious, how do they get to make the roofs look so thin?
I live close to this town. It's an amazing place right outside of Ghent. Love going there
Thanks for sharing, enjoy this part of the world. So beautiful
Beautiful house.

well done
Thank you! An est HQ favourite. Stay tuned, team estliving.com
I don't understand how people relax in houses like these. Then again, to afford a home like this, you most likely never are home.
Do you mind explaining why you feel that way?
Love the home. I assume the owners are also wealthy enough to hire a regular window cleaner.
A great home, the glass adds to overall design. many windows to clean! Stay tuned for more films, team estliving.com
Dream house
An absolute inspiration, we adore the design too. Best, team estliving.com
Супер!
Thanks ☺️

Born rich is a privilege
It's strange that they don't talk about architectural solutions. They don't talk about design decisions. They don't talk about how the repairs were done. They don't talk about choosing furniture. They don't talk about repair innovations, like shadow plinth with is pretty popular in Russia. Nothing is said here. And the house is very boring
These two people are odd. Zero personality and charm. The best part of this video is the panicked cat, sitting poolside.
Haha, at least the found each other...? 🤷♂🐈
Beautiful house but the irony of talking about a green environment while being chemtrailed........
so much boring house
Another boring repeated formulaic modern house. Originality in modern architecture is extremely rare. I could design 100 superior homes to this without waking up.
100 is a lot
