Material Joints (+ why they matter)

  • For a young architect, the realization that lines on paper represent actual physical materials is transformational. An architect's work is to infuse these seemingly simple intersections between materials with meaning and beauty.
To illustrate how architects artfully compose joints (and the different types) I dissect two projects, which differ in their execution but support the same thesis: that even the tiniest of joints matter to architecture.
    Concepts:
    Articulation
    Function
    Spatial definition
    Rainscreen
    Composition
    Pattern + Form
    Orientation
    Sealing
    Detail

I did framing and finishing for a number of years. I have been a certified A&P mechanic for 34 years. I firmly believe that engineers and architects should do the hands on work for 2 years before they start designing anything.

I liked #1 but it is a very common look in northern California. #2 however was pretty spectacular, especially the kitchen, stair, and bath photos. Very nice!
