Our dominant sense as humans is sight. We’ve evolved a finely tuned awareness of light levels around us and assigned them meanings - the warm afternoon sun, a cool and snowy sky, a candlelit table - all of them connected to human emotion.
Architecture invokes light to play on these emotions, to render the scale and mood of our spaces, and to create functional places in which to live.
Good lighting designs balance three primary types of light: ambient, task and accent. Architects and designers make lighting decisions based on the needs of individual spaces and how to tip that balance to achieve certain effects.
In the video I review a few cool tricks worth considering for your next project.

Excellent work. One issue: black trim increases contrast between light source. White trim helps diffuse light and decrease contrast. Black is more striking, more exciting, more dramatic and yields more glare.

Where can someone hire a lighting designer? Do they even exist for small projects? Trying to replace my current recessed lighting in my dining room, kitchen, and hallways.
I’ve tried doing my research on what high end builds use, and ended up on Lucent Lighting.

new subscriber here! been wanting to know if there's a light bulb or led light that gives off a natural sunlight feel? my room is situated in the center of my family house. while i do have windows on 2 walls, natural sunlight seeping in my room (coming from the other rooms) is very limited. as much as i want to have a skylight or have another part of my wall have a window, i couldn't coz my folks dont want it. hope u could help me. thank you!

Very professional opinion
This is a fabulous slideshow and explanation of lighting concepts! Really, among the best I would say, and I have reviewed lots of lighting design videos and slideshows. The only thing is that I wish you referred to the brightness of space in terms of lumens. In only 5 years since this video was made, incandescent lamps have almost become historical artifacts so we really should not think in terms of watts per sq. ft. but rather lumens per s.f.
Do you have a formula that could be used similar to the one he references?
Hi. I live in Mexico City. My house had lots of natural light which also made it warm. The house behind mine has been remodeled and is now so high that very little sun light comes into mine. I am sooo sad, I don´t know what to do (In Mexico every one can do almost anything....I have complained to the architect who has done this, to no effect). I am sure something can be done, can you help? thanks.

yeah, I don't light my room by thinking about how much electricity to use. Converting LED wattage to incandescent wattage seems kind of pointless when we want to know how bright something should be.

I heard recently LED lights were bad for your eyes, have you heard anything regarding this? Given we were moving towards using super low wattage LED lights in homes for the energy efficiency this would be a significant downside and obvious reason not to go down this path.
I think there's some misinformation about LEDs online, I haven't read a lot of studies that prove they're harmful to our eyes.
That being said, I still use incandescents for most of my luminaires as I strongly dislike the light quality of LED bulbs even high CRI ones. I do use dimmers on everything and even though there's some efficiency loss dimming incandescents, it extends bulb service light whilst saving energy. It's optimal to tune lighting levels on a per client/space basis choosing bulb wattage based on use and client preference. This is because dimming a 75W bulb to 40W consistently uses more energy than just using a 40W bulb on full power. Hope that helps...
Light is light, there is no good or bad light, well.... don't watch someone welding metal, or stare at the sun!
For LEDs make sure you get the right color temperature. For living spaces you might want to tend toward warmer color, incandescent is warm color temperature and people are used to that. Cool white might be useful in accents or specifically to induce a psychological effect or to match colors in the architecture.
The only problem i have heard of regarding led is the importance of correct sizing of the drivers which can flicker especially on large circuits with many lights. Leds can be very sharp and directional , but using enclosures ( coves, bounce shelves, etc.) can mitigate these short comings . I love Leds especially 2700 K in an edison style lamp.

Actually I attend a high school in Texas and architecture is just a course available here.
