I’m 71, played guitar all my life. I’m a stroke victim, paralyzed on left side, can’t hold a guitar anymore. Tried harmonica but not enough breath, so I tried piano only have right hand. Never read music before. Learning now, thanks to your help. Can only play right hand but studying left too. Good job.

I want to thank you for this video. I took classical piano lessons from the age of 5 to 14. At my most proficient I performed The Moonlight Sonata at Steinway Hall in NYC. My teacher was a music professor. Anyway for the past couple of months I have been trying to relearn the Sonata but I was scared stiff because I had trouble figuring out the notes above and below the ledger lines. Your approach is very helpful to me. BTW I will be 74 on Halloween. Thanks again

You’re a good and patient teacher. When I have more time I’ll be back for another visit, as I can see the value in your approach. I’m currently taking trumpet lessons, but love the piano and would like to study and learn how to play it. I’m very interested in ragtime music and tried to learn a few pieces. I'm now 66 and been playing piano for 6 months. I had joked all my life was that I was born with two left ears. This reminded me of Mister Rogers. He helped a generation of children, and then he had parents of small children thanking him for helping their children. That is trust. There was a great interview by Johnny Carson and Mister Rogers. Total professional respect.
BTW I hope to have my video out soon to help pianists with simple exercises and self-treatments to strengthen and stabilize the low back as well as the upper extremities. Very good for those piano injuries and strength in the fingers, especially the 5.
    Stay tuned.

Good mnemonics tied to the shapes on the grand staff and associative memory. So instead of remembering a floating disconnected mnemonic like Every Good Boy etc, one can look at the staff itself and connect the notes. This should be standard teaching:)

then the word FACE for the spaces (F,A,C,E)
I'm extending your words to add "AND BOB"

I like the story idea too, and what I like about this method is that it teaches people a direct connection between the notes on the staff and where to find them on the keyboard. Methods involving mnemonics to remember the names of the notes on the staff don't necessarily do that.
One other little "anchor" that I like is that the middle line on the treble clef is B and the middle line on the bass clef is D. This could actually be incorporated into the story, e.g. the two Generals on the G clef are in the MIDDLE of a Battle. And the Frown on the F clef is really in (the middle of) the Dumps. (OK, that's stretching it a bit, but maybe it will help).
Another thing I like is the explicit teaching of the different C's, i.e. C1, C2,C3, and all the other notes. Although this is kind of obvious once you know it, it's not necessarily obvious to a complete beginner, and yet I think this is the only RUclips video I've seen so far, aimed at beginners or teachers of beginners, that explicitly teaches this.
There is another method that one can find on RUclips, called "The Landmark method", that is similar to this, and also quite good, although this one is ideal for young beginners. (But not necessarily _only_ young beginners. After all, we all like stories. :-) ).
Thank you Jerald, and best wishes.

I cannot thank you enough for getting me off the Every Good Boy Deserves Food mode of trying to read music that I was taught learning the recorder when I was seven. Using a story, or having students create one with their imagination is an awesome idea. We have am excellent memory for stories and also location, such as markers of a path that we travel each day.
