Hey there! I really enjoyed your fantastic RUclips video, especially since it's from an Aussie like me! I'm keen on upgrading my Toyota Prado diesel from those stock rubber clamp-style hoses to AN/PTFE hoses. Do you happen to have any videos demonstrating how to fit the AN/PTFE fittings from either the fuel filter end or from the OEM steel fuel pipe end? Cheers, Ethan from Perth, WA.
Do you run AN hose and fittings ? Got an engine bay you’d like to show off ? Tag me @paulbroomy in your Instagram stories and I’ll share them ! All hose and fittings on this video were sourced from www.mrparts.com.au
Times are tough hahaha they were just the closest ones to me. Seen some MIG action those gloves (I hate the feel of thick MIG gloves, downside is these get smashed from splatter)
Hi m8 ive got -an hose can i install it to aliminium barb if i tap a thread on to the barb enabling me to screw on a - an fitting ? Its a vx commodore if u r familiar with the vehicle im wanting to install a pwr stering cooler to the barbs @ the front of the bumper! Thnxs 4 the vid.
Hi Mic, a barb is normally sized based on rubber hose sizes (ie 5/16, 3/8”, 1/2”, etc). -AN hoses are not this size, so you cannot use them with a normal type of barb you would find on a car, or brass type one from a hydraulic shop. If you tap a thread to run a fitting that can screw in that has a -AN nipple, then you can screw a -AN hose end to it.
Is it necessary to tighten ptfe fittings right until they’re flush together? I’ve tightened mine as tight as I dare, they’re not flush but feel like they’ll strip if I go any tighter. Great content.
What about the stainless steel braided hose? Got the devil's job inserting frayed steel strands into the fitting. Fitting is now all scratched up and my arms ache!
Broomy, help! I bought some fittings and stainless steel hose. Now the collar fittings come with the threading for the hose as well as the insert. The stainless steel is making it hard to pass this first thread. Where can I buy the ones without the thread?
Hi, good video but dumb question, ain't it possible to put an AN fitting with a rubber hose ? Cuse i can't really find a SH fitting (push lock) for a rubber hose 5mm inner diameter. (I can find a SH10, but it's 6mm so not really it'll fit a 5mm inner diameter hose)
Hi, the smallest push on rubber hose -an fittings are ‘-4’, which is 1/4” hose (6.4mm). Braided hose -AN fittings use compression and cut into the hose to keep the hose on the fitting, so if you use rubber hose with a braided -an hose fitting it will most likely cut into the hose, split it and blow off. If you have a 5mm hose, you will have to use a barb fitting used for vacuum lines.
@@BroomysGarage hi again, thanks so much for the explanations, so yeah i'll definitely look at the barb fittings or even a bigger hose cause i'll have to disconnect it from the compressor very often, so quick connector ! Thanks again !
Nice info, but all of the edits at the hardest parts are not showing us the most difficult stages. I get that it makes it longer and it is a bit ugly, but these fittings (especially ptfe) can be super difficult to assemble and seeing the struggle is an important part of understanding these and really the most important.
I have been struggling with something you mention. I have -6AN Earls power steering hose for a return line from the P/S rack to a standard power steering pump reservoir. The hose is just a touch to tight to fit it over the barb on the reservoir. How do i fix this.. The AN hose will not fit over the barb..
That is because the barb will be a standard hose size, ie 5/16”, 3/8”, 1/2” ID etc, and AN hoses are not this size (always slightly smaller than corresponding standard rubber hose size) You will not be able to fix this other than using an AN to AN male flare joiner, running the braided hose to one side and then a small run of normal rubber hose to the reservoir.
@@BroomysGaragewow thanks for the response. This is the first time I ever worked on power steering. Since this is a return line, not a high pressure can I use a rubber hose instead of the braided hose? If yes what kind of hose do I use? Also, the rack return port has AN fittings at the rack, what fittings do I use on rubber hose?
I know your speaking english but im still lost, im looking at doing the fuel lines to the fuel rails on my boss 260, where do i start, measuring/ type of fittings? 🤔
Been told by manufacturers not to use any clamps on pushlock as it will dig into the barbs potentially puncturing it? Have you found this to be true or just them covering their asses? Thanks mate probably one of the best AN videos on YT.
Our 626 still has predominantly proflow on it as the car is about to be retired, but our builds currently underway and planned for the future on fullboost do not have any proflow, no.
Push-Lok....easy-peezy. Right. Except that it takes 75 pounds of force to push the hose onto the fitting. Surely there must be a good tip you could show us. And don't call you Shirley.
Hey Paul ! found your channel on Zip ties community page !! had a look through the channel and subscribed !! im a fellow Australian car youtube in Brisbane ! check my channel out if you get the chance !
Thank you, finally understand AN hoses 😅
Thank you for teaching! Gonna get pfte hoses to replace rubber hoses on my 67 VW bus 🤙🏼
Need to build a oil cooler for a Suzuki bandit this was very helpful thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers Broomy, I will watch this several times because I have never gotten my head around this stuff.
Best video I have seen so fare about AN ✅
killing it with all the vids your putting up, it's great to have videos like yours to learn this basic stuff
Thanks. You keep watching and sharing them and I’ll keep making them !
So on the last fittings you don’t need to clamp it or anything and it holds? Up to how much pressure will it hold?
Excellent video, by far the best on AN I have seen, thanks a lot
Nice, simple & thorough explanation. Cheers Brian.
Tip for you guys..use heat shrink around and abrasive/touching areas
clear heat shrink if your fussy
Best explanation of AN fittings I have heard. Well done Broomy 😀

Great content and delivery!
Great content Broomy, keep up the good work mate👌🏼
Excited, will watch when i get home. Love the informative info on this channel 👌🏾
I tend to just go to BL-Shipway. Get them to make whatever custom line I need.
Much cheaper than Automotive options, and often rated to 1000's of PSi.
Great info. Always wanted to do this myself. Thank you.
Great information, thank you!

Anyway you could reach out to me? I have a question and need advice as to replacing the fuel pump to fuel line hose.
Great Video !!
Can you bend and form your own hoses for 90 deg bends, by heating and re setting or any other method? Thanks.
awesome vid thank you

No, it will differ from brand to brand, but normally a tight with a fingernail width for any fitting is adequate

I noticed that you used white PTFE instead of the carbon lined PTFE. Thoughts on possible static electricity? Bunk?
Great video! Which hose do you recommend for a radiator system?
-16 AN, stainless braided rubber is generally easier to work with for radiator hose sizes.

Depends on the type of clamp and how it is used. Plenty of -AN performance hose companies sell clamp options for rubber hose and barb setups.

Our 626 still has predominantly proflow on it as the car is about to be retired, but our builds currently underway and planned for the future on fullboost do not have any proflow, no.

Put the hose in some hot water, spray the push loc barb with silicone spray, will push on all the way with minimal force every time.
Never use push lock fittings.
