Love that very Mepps lure Dave, works just as good north of the 49th here in Manitoba, Canada. #3s and #4s up here are my favorite. Can catch anything with them. That was a relaxing time on the water.

Hey Dave, I've been looking into some different bushcraft watercrafts (conoe, coracle) using minimal materials; just something down and dirty to get you out into the water in a self reliance situation. I think that would be a great addition to your water's edge series! Thank you for all that you do Brother!

Excellent video brother! I used to fish a lot when I was younger, not so much in the last 15 years. I had a bass boat, but it just got to be a lot of work so I sold it. Seems like the older I get the simpler I prefer things. I may be in the market for a canoe now, thanks for the inspiration!

I totally agree with the statement that fish love red. I fish lots of wilderness ponds in the Adirondack's, and brook trout absolutely go nuts for red attractants. Fish On! And thank you for all of your vids and info that you put out there free of charge simply to educate. Thanks again.

I love your fishing videos Dave. They make me want to go fishing again soon. I have this 'Honey Hole' on the Stillwater River here in Dayton that kept me fed last year during my unemployment. I have videos of several huge smallmouth that I caught on numerous occasions. I would take a Mepps and pull it from a shallow-center-river area over a deep-close-eddy-area and nearly every time around 5:30PM (you could set your watch by it). BOOM! Big Smallies. 5 to 6 of them. Nothing beats 'dirt time'. :-)

Hi dave any day you spend fishing is a good day. Remember the old red devil spoon lure. that was one of the only lures i ever used. and stil it can be bought today. Red does have a huge effect on the fish.

Absolutely agreed River Rambler. On flat water, there's no reason why one should be changing switching the paddle to the other side. Bill Mason's Path of the Paddle videos are unequaled classics of canoeing instruction. There is a companion book of the same name which is also very good.
    Cheers,
    - Martin

Nice Dave, as a long time paddler, for a canoe that short, get a double end paddle,or just make one, it'll really help with controling the zig zag effect of a shorter canoe especially on a windy day.

I had a canoe but i kayak now, like it better. I love fishing for large mouth bass. nothing like seeing a large large mouth bass jump out of the water when you hooked it. We have allot of northern pike here, there fun to catch. Looks like you had a great time, Great stress reducer

Hey Dave, can you make a video on making a quick down-n-dirty boat from a tarp or something that can easily be packed? I saw in a survival manual that showed a type of raft out of weaving branches and using a tarp as the base and cordage that kept it together. I would love to see this made and how effective it would be in getting out into the water to fish. Thanks again brother for all that you do!

I think you would be ideally suited for one of the Shaw and Tenney (dot com) paddles called "The Algonquin." It is a hunting paddle, low noise and with a grip perfect for solo use in a light canoe. I can see the paddle which came with your new canoe is not a model I'd be happy with under most circumstances. Best of luck fishing! I, too, am a Mepps fan!

More fishing trips! I just did my own solo mish up the river on my yak... I had 5 rattlesnakes within 10-12' of my fire and backed outta there around midnight. Did I misunderstand the situation? Should I have stayed by the fire n snakes? In either case, it prompted me to use my catch that day for some good ole catfish/carp fights. Keep the outdoor fishing/ canoe vids coming! Also, those spinning, vibrating lures AND circle hooks is all thats in my tackle box. Good pick!

Mepps works great as to Panther Martins. Rooster Tails do not work so well and the problem is the body shape. The bodies on the Roostertails are pill shaped with rounded ends and the blasted spinner blades stick to the bodies unless you give the lure a snap and use a faster retrieve. Pather Martin uses pear shaped weights so you can retrieve slower and yet the blade still spins.

i use Mepps for over thirty jears now(here in Europe it's very common),but never tried it on a lake!
Mostly i go for River Trout or Rainbow Trout with number 2 or 3 and it works really well.
Badly my ultralight Rod broke last time but i'm more into hobo fishing anyways...

  • @Nitrisbot
    @Nitrisbot 11 лет назад

Dave one thing I always do is have a second rod out the back with a hardbody lure trolling behind me, especially when I'm sussing out new territory. The catch is I guess u need to have a rod holder u trust or a way to make sure the rod is not going to go swimming when a fish hits it.... I'm sure u already do this, just putting it out there. For me its an easy way to kill 2 birds one stone.
Love this series Keep em coming :)

its a very nice boat, travled 20 km a day with it, good stability
for touring i would now pick the solo 14
but its still a very good canoe

You sure got a lot of cool toys Dave. I just went fishing a couple of days ago at the swift creek resevoir, and didn`t get a thing using a jar of fake worms. Have you ever used catfish charlie? It stinks to high heaven, and I just thought it may also be good for bait on your trap lines. My father, and I cought a mess of catfish with it while fishing some channels in Pocohontas Arkansas. Thought you might like to try it if you never have, Happy fishin, thanks for all the tribal knowledge.

i was test casting my fishing pole into my cul de sac. it just had 3 small led weights on it at the time. and a squirl ran up and was interested in it. it ran all the way up to the leds and picked it up put it in its mouth than dropped it, then ran off..i thought it was so funny but if i had a hook on there i could have caught me a squirl with a fishing pole in the middle of the street...:) lol

"When the water's cold the fish don't move as well as they would in warmer water."
This same principle can be used to make catching literally any cold blooded animal a lot easier :p.
Anything from insects to lizards, basically anything that isn't mammalian is virtually moving in slo-mo in cold weather.

Program/episode suggestion: I now live in Ohio. In all your hunting/trapping/fishing videos you don't speak much about the laws. An episode addressing laws and general legal principles in the Eastern Woodlands would be very interesting even though every State has slightly different laws.
My problem as a kid in the Pacific Northwest was snags. Lost your lure. Probably I was just ignorant.
