i grew up using mepps fishing tackle and learning to live in the way of the woods when i was younger i use to get in trouble learning woodsman survival skills it never stoped me coz i think people need to learn this to make it i found dave by accident on you tube love it thanks dave for showing this
Nothing better than a day of backpacking and fishing. Looked like an awesome day God blessed u with man! Thanks again for giving your time making another video.
I have always been a huge Mepps fan. I can brings in some nice bass with my Mepps lures when nobody else is catching. Mister Twister is another great lure company that produces tons of lures that imitate real bugs and minnows.I keep Mepps lures in my bug-out bag, camping gear, survival gear and even behind the seat of my truck. Thanks for all of the great videos
I don't think I've ever seen a youtube channel this civilized. no insults no effin around. great channel. great videos, Dave. Been lovin all your stuff for years!
First off- the waters edge is probably one of my top favorites that you have done! Really appreciate the time you put into the fishing aspect of survival and for that matter the simple fun of fishing itself. Second-my two sense. What I have found after years of fishing is to go small. 1/10, 1/16 and even 1/24 oz for inline spinners in the colors you said. Little fish are more likely to hit the much smaller lures and even a big fish will eat a small one every now and then! God Bless, Cheers
My favorite lure lately is just a dark purple synthetic worm on a small gold hook, attached to the line with a dark colored swivel, it catches all sizes and kinds of fish and the movements are second to none on the drop and while reeling.
another good vid in the series Dave, thanks! I love those double sided boxes also. Real cheap and lots of options. I have mine with fishing supplies on one side and snare wire etc on the other.. a little surf & turf food getting box. Keep up the great work!
Thanks brother,, I always look forward to the videos, , inspiring,,,educational and down right fun to watch,,getting that pack ordered tommorow, , thanks again from Deep South Georgia ~~~~~~~~
You visit some beautiful places in your videos. I love watching them especially because I live in the city and don't get a chance to go their myself. Awesome videos brother!
Beautiful spot. Your linear approach is spot on. Throwing straight out from the bank the bait will cross several strike zones (contours) but only briefly. Whereas, as you do, keeping the bait on or near contours keeps the bait in the zone.
I am from Northern Minnesota and the most versatile lure I have ever used is a red and white daredevil. I have caught Crappie, Walleye, northern Pike, and bass with it and I think its just a great lure.
Interesting Dave. I have started carrying a couple of Altoids tins for my tackle box these days. I carry small rattle traps in silver, small chartreuse spinner baits, a couple of different inline spinners, hooks, sinkers, and jigs with different colored curly tails for my jigs. The spinner baits have been working best for me on the rivers I fish. I carried my big old tackle box with me today for the first time in a long while and somebody ran over it with their 4x4. Seems like a sign to me.
Those rooster tails, mepps, and crayfish lures always work great but another one that is great for a change up is using a jig head with one of those grubs with the swimming action tail. They come in various colors and sizes to suit different water conditions. Plus if u just wanted to use the jig head with a live bait of some kind, you could use it in that way as well.
Dave, Have you ever thought about coming up to the Adirondacks where Nessmuk spent his time? The ADKs are a patchwork of private and public lands that total a greater land mass than Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Rocky Mountain combined. Many of the areas up here that Nessmuk paddled are populated as they were the most populated routes but many nearby areas are just as wild as it was when he was here. I'd recommend the Whitney Wilderness Area. You should check it out.
Not only is that frog an easy meal, he could also be bait for a larger meal. As a kid, I often caught bass in the 2# - 3# range with a frog that size. I noticed a frog from the area where I fished worked better than frogs from other areas. Plus, you can keep the frog alive and still eat it if you were unsuccessful OR keep him alive until a more productive time of the day for bigger fish.
Great video, brother. Fishing is one of the most relaxing activities there is. I really love this series and am looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing. Looks like you guys in Ohio are doing a little better than average on your water levels. Looks to be only down about 3 feet.
Greatest fish catcher of all time (at least for trout in Eastern Canada) = Panther Martin.... Available in pretty much any color and hook variation. My favorite's are the #2 brass with red hackle treble hook, #2 trout colored (green, pink, white with black dots) and #1 yellow with red dots. Throw either of these on 4lb Trilene XL smooth casting and it's killer for trout in small streams.
Great video Dave but you should still have one or two top water baits sometime when the fishing is slow throw topwater poper I noticed in the video there was some fish jumping out of water going what is swimming on the top
Nice video Dave I'm big on the fishing I go chance I get I'm hoping to see more fishing series cause there's a wide variety of fishing styles I love lure fishing and live bait is good for some bigger fish I'd like to know more about fishing diff kind of areas ponds, fast water, big river thanks
To get more action or draw attention to your baits with blades on them. Take a pair of pliers and bend the blade slightly 3/4 of the way back from the front. It should make your baits vibrate more as they swim through the water.
Hello Dave, I have been watching some of your videos.. gaining useful knowledge for future reference... I could not get my husband interested until he heard you mention Shimano ...Now we finally have his attention BUT he uses flies and fishes rivers...Thanks
I would add a couple small minnow type baits as well. Like a couple Rapalas. One gold and one silver. But what u have in that pack u can catch almost anything that swims in north America. I usually carry a small fly rod and ultra light set up with me every time I'm near water. I also love to fish. And hunt and trap. Lol I just love the outdoors. Keep up these awesome videos!!! And it would be cool if u did some deer hunting videos this fall/winter.
I was going to suggest switching to flies also. I have had way more luck with flies than artificial anything else. although a floating lure that looks like a small bass has been very productive for me as well. Caught a 26 inch and a 28 inch bass on one of those (and a giant snapping turtle once that had to weigh at least 70 lbs).
I generally agree with most everything in your lure kit but I do like to keep a couple of small spoons minimum one gold one silver and some beetle spins. I'm also partial to rattle traps the smallest size ones. I like portable rod systems that come in pieces and fit together rather than the ones that collapse. Not sure which one the one you have is so that is just a statement not a criticism.
Another nice video Dave good info. I like the lure selection that you had there but I would add a couple of Mr. Twister type baits in different colors. They actually work really well up here in NW ohio.
love your videos... i love spinner fishin it is the most effective lure... i mjorly fish with spinners for bass. i have learned something last year.... the bass dont strike unless the spinner stops or drops or flcks a little. i fish at a pond and there is bass in it, i saw when just retrieving the spinner barely anything happens but as soon as i stop while retreving the fish strike. i know why and i can explain if you want.
Great video as always. I was wondering if you could do a video that I dont think anyones done, and thats on how to choose a GOOD map for when your out in the woods. I dont believe, and I could be wrong of course, that most people know where to go to get good quality maps for camping and hiking use. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Dave I dig all your videos man. That's a nice lake or pond you fish. That's a shame you don't get that much action on bass. Try a 6 to 8 inch crème make purple worm texas rig style You will pound largemouth on that.
Great video and mindset catching the frogs. I hate to bother you with gear questions, but i'm about to make one of those hip pouches and was wondering if there was any info you could share about it. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Great vid on fishing, can't catch'em all but who ever did fishing? I like the gathering and hunting/trapping thinking you were doing while fishing, shows you gotta be on the lookout for food all of the time while you're trying to survive.
The only negative comment I would make is that you did not emphasize varying your retrieval when you are not getting bites. Different presentation, different depths etc. Looks like a great place to spend some time though. Thanks for posting. I wish I had the time to do this more often. I sneak off two or three times a year (call in sick) , but only fish in a pond on my property, I would love to get out and explore like you do. Ten years til retirement, cant come soon enough.
Great video Dave, I see you like using Mepps spinners in a few of your other videos. I recommend you start carrying a #2 Mepps Aglia with a dressed Brown Tail, one with an all Silver Blade and one with an all Gold Blade. These have been the most productive Mepps spinners I have ever used for anything from trout to bass to panfish and will consistently catch fish. Check them out and keep up the good work!
Cool video Dave.I need a new camera, what are you shooting with and is it waterproof? I catch a lot of fish this way. I also love casting toward the bank from in my kayak. I might start to learn how to fly fish after ice season. Steelhead are starting to slowly hit then its ice time baby
Thats a very nice lake, looks super relaxing. I live in Dallas and im within walking distance of a man made lake, but its terrible. Only thing you'll catch here is West Nile virus or trash. I need to make friends like Dave I would be a lot less stressed.
Not trying to tell you how to fish but try this , when you have casted out make sure your rod tip is close to the water so you dont make a wake with the line on top of the water and when reeling in twitch your rod tip side ways now and again opposite way from the lure to make the lure dart underwater rather than just a constant speed. You might find you catch more and dont spook the fish.Still like your videos bt the way.
I enjoyed this video. I want to get into fishing but the only experience i have is a friend of mine took me out on a charter to do some bottom fishing. as far a lakes, streams, and pond i am clueless. Can you lead me in the right path?, fishing is a skill that is necessary, and i need to learn. thanks for any feedback you can give me.
is there any kind of frog that we dont want to eat in the midwest, i have not gotten sick off any frog legs but was just wondering incase i come across one i havent seen before
Man Dave I always love watching your videos. Here in Massachusetts I would add (and I'm not knocking your kit by any means please don't misunderstand me) I would add some purple rubber worms with those glow beads you have . Bass nail em' here . Love the pack hope the family is all good and your still doing well with the cigarette thing(Quiting that is). God bless
Hey Dave great video.how ever for my money(dont have a lot)I would stick with baits like rubber worms(rigged Texas style)and crappi jiggs.I have found that those two baits are prety sure fire ways to land fish.
DUDE !! (so to speak) , just googled "nessmuk history" and found his later home , jut a few hours southwest of my home . interesting in that i worked thru area in gasfields for our rental equipment . beautiful area . ran into a butte naked porcupine in southwest zone of P.A. Tioga state forest one trip ... gave me map of WORST ROAD for a 24,000lb service truck :)

I can watch this all day.
The area right where you are at in this video is exactly why I love this part of the country. You truly fish in a beautiful area, Dave.
Nothing better than a day of backpacking and fishing. Looked like an awesome day God blessed u with man! Thanks again for giving your time making another video.
Really love the water's edge videos. Fun to watch, and you learn something.

Thanks Dave!!
Dave this is one of my favorite videos, I think I've watched it about ten times now. I hope we get back to the on the waters edge series soon.
another good vid in the series Dave, thanks! I love those double sided boxes also. Real cheap and lots of options. I have mine with fishing supplies on one side and snare wire etc on the other.. a little surf & turf food getting box. Keep up the great work!

My favorite short series. Great stuff Dave, thanks!
Great series! Love to see the sunlight back lighting that fish at @ 4:37 Neat stuff Dave!
Great video Dave... I enjoyed the little tips along the way as well.
Thanks for all your hard work brother.

Hi Dave, many thanks for this very good and nice video! ...amazing place. All the best, Sepp
I love to bank fish. Thanks for taking us along.
Great vid as usual Dave. Thanks for all the knowledge you share - wish I was in Ohio to come to a class. You've been a great mentor from afar...

That frog is not only a quick easy meal, it is bait for fishing, or trapping.

i love this series! very informative for bank fishing :)
wow some of these people are just ruthless.
Love the cinematography in this video! You just took me on a mini vacation. Lots of good info in your opinions and views sir. Keep up the good work!
I use a plano box like that and just stick it in my cargo pocket. I love it. That and my multitool is about all i need.
To get more action or draw attention to your baits with blades on them. Take a pair of pliers and bend the blade slightly 3/4 of the way back from the front. It should make your baits vibrate more as they swim through the water.
Hello Dave,
I have been watching some of your videos.. gaining useful knowledge for future reference... I could not get my husband interested until he heard you mention Shimano ...Now we finally have his attention
BUT he uses flies and fishes rivers...Thanks
Outstanding
Nice vid Dave (as always), very serene. Good discussion too.
Thank you Sir Great video and thanks for the response!
Looks like a picture perfect day Brother. I'm jealous.
I would add a couple small minnow type baits as well. Like a couple Rapalas. One gold and one silver. But what u have in that pack u can catch almost anything that swims in north America. Nice video as always dave, The only thing different I would carry in my bow is a beetle spin. Those things will catch any fish in the water.

Great vid! Makes me feel like i'm relaxing and fishing!
Couldn't agree more for survival fishing.
I thought you were going to use the frog as bait!! LOL!! Crickets and grasshoppers are great for bait as well.
Heck the frog probably saw you coming and said "Ribbit! It's Dave Canterbury and he looks hungry!"
Another nice video Dave good info. I like the lure selection that you had there but I would add a couple of Mr. Twister type baits in different colors. They actually work really well up here in NW ohio.

´´FEAST OF TRUMPETS´´ BROTHER DAVE...CHECK IT OUT BROTHER!!! MARANATHA!!!
from Illinois can you do a video on tackle and places to fish for walleye bass etc. Im always fishing on the river but cant get a bite.
Great video as always. I was wondering if you could do a video that I dont think anyones done, and thats on how to choose a GOOD map for when your out in the woods. You're a shimano guy like me dave. Favorite reel brand!
Dave I dig all your videos man. That's a nice lake or pond you fish. That's a shame you don't get that much action on bass. Try a 6 to 8 inch crème make purple worm texas rig style You will pound largemouth on that.
I find fishing during the day I get nothing.
We get most fish during the morning and in the evening.
Or at a spillway after a good rainfall.
Great video!
I love fishing. Mostly for trout up here in Canada. What Duluth pack is the it looks like the perfect size for what I am looking for.
Hey Dave great video I know is an older on but can you explain the use of the beads are they for Carolina rigs or more multipurpose then just that
Great video and mindset catching the frogs. I hate to bother you with gear questions, but i'm about to make one of those hip pouches and was wondering if there was any info you could share about it. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Thank you.
Cool vid thats the same mini tackle box I have. I've got one very small box I use primarily for trout and then another for a variety of species.
just started fishing.thanks for the info
Gran video
have you ever used trout magnets? they are the best out here in western washington.
oh, sorry to hear about that.
The only negative comment I would make is that you did not emphasize varying your retrieval when you are not getting bites. What lake were you on Dave...nice.looking area
awesome
just some advice if you see rocks on the bank most of the time it goes out for a good ways.

one more ? are you catching walleye small & bigmouth bass and catfish with just inline spinners?
so how's it coming along with the yo-yo auto reels? are you considering to do a video about them?
I enjoyed this video. I want to get into fishing but the only experience i have is a friend of mine took me out on a charter to do some bottom fishing. as far a lakes, streams, and pond i am clueless. Can you lead me in the right path?, fishing is a skill that is necessary, and i need to learn. thanks for any feedback you can give me.
Nice set up Dave About what does that St. Croix reel and rod combo cost.
Dave have you ever fished dale hollow lake in tennessee or kentucky?
dave would you not try to set up a partnership with shimano to try and get the small rod u were using on your site because i cannot find it anywhere
thats one beautiful lake man! to bad I live in belgium
That frog was probably still cold from the previous night. Early morning would probably be a good time to go out frogging, I would imagine.
is there any kind of frog that we dont want to eat in the midwest, i have not gotten sick off any frog legs but was just wondering incase i come across one i havent seen before
Man Dave I always love watching your videos.
DUDE !! Tioga state forest one trip ... gave me map of WORST ROAD for a 24,000lb service truck :)
Dave, I know it is a bit off subject but you did mention trapping and I was wondering if you ever used Duke traps? I see they have 2 versions of the110 conibear which is much cheaper, or "common man". One is really cheap and they also have a magnum of the same size but it costs a bit more. I am assuming it is due to spring strength. Any experience with these traps? As you may guess I am looking forward to the trapping series.
Jeff
hey dave what about laurel lake?
Dave, are there any book you recommend on edible plants. I was at Bass Pro this weekend and seen one that was written by Department of Defense, but there must be something better.
Dave, I've got a question: When you do all kinds of hunting videos, how are the legalities lined up? Can you hunt on your land, do you need a permit, is it certain animals only? I don't even know where to look, exactly, for that kind of information (I live in New York).
so who knows the name and singer of this song?
I agree with Dave frog is very tasty my dad used to snare bull frog's when I was a kid and believe me I looked forward to having frog leg's for dinner so how can you say it's crap until you try it
is that a type of bug that makes that shaky sound? like a rattle?
