Hi Darren, lovely video, nice that you spent your childhood by the sea in Margate Kent . Nice memories for you of the great times you had with your mum and dad in Margate. The sea looks nice and the beach .😊🥹
We went to see The Kinks at Dream Land in the summer of 1966, but Ray Davies the lead singer didn't turn up with the group so sadly they couldn't play. We listened to the pirate ☠️ radio ship all day long. I think it was radio Caroline good times with the mods and rockers.
Wow how it’s changed from how I remember it. My Nan and Aunt had a boarding house. In Elthelbert Road, in Cliftonville near the Lido. In the late fifties early sixties. Going down to the beach, via the Cliff Lift. It was literally a lift, going down the side of a cliff to get to the beach. Very happy days ❤❤❤
Born in Margate in 72,also was my home town,so fond memories,I moved away in 90 for work… Sundeck had a few ‘fires’ so they ended up pulling it down, never known one town to have so many fires 😉 & always the same name cropping up 🤷♂️ Went back last year to visit family and the memories came flooding back…
I’m a Londoner and always have been, but every bank holiday my parents brother and I took a day trip to Margate, big breakfast first in a cafe near the train station, onto the beach and then straight into Dreamland, Then in the 80’s I’d go there with friends and head straight into Bembom brothers, spend all day in there. Fantastic times, so much fun. Mary Rose, looping star, scenic railway.. brilliant. I went there again last year and took a look around on a sunny bank holiday, it was packed, the beach was full, amusements full..it was good to see the old place still pulling in the day trippers. OFAH, one of my favourites and Jolly Boys outing is an iconic episode and is one of my episodes from that show. Absolutely brilliant. Del boys face on the scenic railway, priceless. 🤣
British Seaside Weather 😢can't beat it.55yrs plus ago,i had a mate,he and his family went to Margate on their annual holidays. They went to the same Guest House ( old-fashioned term) for as long as we knew them, about 20yrs.And that was before Tracy Emmin(?) made it world famous. Out of season, these " painted ladies " are always in need of a wash and brush up😢 But,come the better weather, the day trippers they spark into life.Nostalgia as they say. Ain't what is was ,this was an absolute joy. Your memories, the old photos. Informative and entertaining. As indeed are all of your videos 😊 Hope your mum was enjoying the day,and you took her somewhere nice for lunch😊❤❤Cheers til the next one Allan&Family
When you get to our age memories of places we’ve been ,the memories of times with our loved one that have passed become more precious. The old Victorian seaside resorts were all we could afford back in the day but great times.
Oh me Darren! My folks took my brother and I for a day out to Margate in 1976 when we had our holidays at my aunt & uncles in Bexleyheath! Think we took the train if I remember! The sights and the smells were light years away from rural Aberdeenshire I can tell you! We did the lot, swam in the sea, got sunburnt in deckchairs, had donkey rides, ice cream, fish & chips, amusements! It’s such a shame to see places like that, a shadow of their former selves! Mind you, we were happier with a lot less then, simpler times, good times! Thanks for this one! Enjoyed it!👍👏👏👏❤️
Brilliant interesting video as usual, shame iconic British seaside places got left behind as tourists chose over seas, however recently after covid people started visiting them again but for many places it was too little to late. Hopefully these places can see a revival.
What a lovely video. For those of us who were children in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the sight of a British seaside resort in the rain conjures up emotions of nostalgia and sadness. I have fond memories of summer holidays in Porthcawl and Weston-Super-Mare and the decline of such places is heartbreaking but inevitable. Yes, those smells of candy floss and donuts (as well as cheap burgers) are so evocative and I do remember British Home Stores, otherwise known as BHS!
My first thought of Margate is Jolly Boys Outing, classic Only Fools episode, then Nilson's Everybody's Talkin' At Me, then Chas & Dave. Loved this DJ.
Good old Margate! Fun times back in the day. Late 70's & 80's. My school in Kentish Town, London NW5, used to take us for days out...we all had a great time & when we were older, groups of us would go for a cheap wkend away by the sea. Fond memories. Lizzie 👌🤗🥰
Hi Darren, Love your video of Margate, where you grew up. Its so lovely to see the Beach and Sea isnt it. Cheers everyone up. I love the smell of Seaweed by the Sea. 😍 I remember the Half pence coins, they were so tiny and cute weren't they back then 🎉
Thank you for taking us on such a nostalgic tour of Margate. I have not been there since I was a child and sadly don’t remember much about it. As well as Only Fools and Horses I am also reminded of the Chas and Dave ‘Margate Song’. A classic song in its own right.
II was born in Margate n 1959 and (mis)spent my youth there, leaving in 1980 to explore the world Dad worked in Dreamland and I had free run to the amusement park, cinema, rendezvous club, the Lido and the like. The Italian coffee bars...Rossi's, Pelosi's, Macari's...were legendry. Funnily enough I live in Tenerife now. Small world eh
What a lovely little walk around Margate. I'm sure it was absolutely buzzing back in the day. Looks so lovely and peaceful. Would be a sweet little getaway I'm sure. Loved all the Only Fools and Horses references. Such a top show. So funny!
Hi Darren. I really enjoyed the nostalgia of this walk. Next door to the old BHS building, l was so happy to see the Marina Cafe was still there. I have vivid memories, especially of 1967, putting the juke box on, and listening to San Francisco, Scott Mackenzie,❤ used to have tea in glass cup and saucer. I still think its nice there. Thanks again.
Darren, Absolutely love you're seaside vlogs! I've many happy memories, playing Track and field in the arcades for hours, obviously everything seems to change, & unfortunately so many seafronts have declined throughout the UK.. Im close to Great Yarmouth, & thats not the place it was in the 80s.. Hopefully your next visit to Margate the weather is more kind mate 👍 Cheers, for the nostalgic trip 🍻
The arcade was owned by local businesses man Jimmy Godden and yes it "caught fire" He also owned the famous old fun fair at Ramsgate that was partly inside which also "caught fire" He owned Dreamland and wanted to knock it down for redevelopment but luckily local people managed to get the Scenic Railway blue plaque status and obtained a compulsory purchase order and guess what? Half the coaster had to be rebuilt after it "caught fire"! He also owned the Rotunda Fun Fair at Folkestone but I am.pretty sure he just went in one day and bulldozed it
Lived in Cliftonville from the early seventies until the end of eighties mum and dad had a guest house and a hotel on sweyn road beautiful memories hotels full streets all lit up such a fantastic place sad to see it now😞 thanks for the video brought back some lovely memories ❤
Use to go to dreamland in the 70s and 80s always remember the marry rose and The Sphinx.Remember going in 76 with the really hot weather those where the days and the signal railway.Margate is quite hipster these days.
Never been to margate , shame about the rain , everything is better in the sun .Nice for you to look back on the memories. Hope you treated mum .nothing nicer than a walk along the sea front with a bag of chips xx
Hi Darren, I enjoyed this. It would be good to see you do other seaside walks of towns around the London area! A shame it was wet but I think this kind of added to the true authenticity of a seaside town when it’s not all sunshine and sunbathing 😊 Thanks, very informative and interesting ❤ I hope your Mum had a lovely day 🌸🌺💐
Loved your video, however saying if nobody knows Only Fools + Horses don't worry- that show is dented in pop culture everyone knows of it-come on Darren lol And Margate one of my fav parts of Kent along with Ramsgate! You talking bout the storm of 1987-I was 6 and remember my mum/dad telling me and my brother to come downstairs and we lit candles then later on saw our garage door had blown off and went over our brick wall and went in the middle of the road. Rocky 3 was released in 1982 in UK 🥊😃 2015 isn't fairly new is it lol
Thanks Darren so many memories, my late dad would take us for a holday every year . I'm going back to the 70s,remember dreamland. Thanks for this video
I remember the penny arcade bck mid 80s. Sadly lost ! My family eventually moved to broadstairs in 86, and I live up the road in westbrook. Margate still needs more investment, but it is slowly getting there, though it seems that with every new building, another one closes like the winter Gardens for an example.
Really interesting Darren. I remember my childhood going to Hoylake, Southport, New Brighton, Rhyl and many others. Not the same anymore but at least we have our memories.
Alright There Darren.. Hope All Is Well From Manchester To You..? Margate I Seem To Recall As A Distant Memory A Place I Once Frequented As Very Much A Youngster With My Even Younger Sister And Now Some Time Passed My Mum And Dad Who Ventured There. Being A "Mod" For Much Of My Later Life Brighton Was Somewhere That I Had A Passion To See Yet Still Remains A Certain Destination To Be. You Of No Doubt Have Far More Experience Than Me..? London As With Manchester And So Many Other Cities Do Possess Their Own Particular Attractions But Coastal Towns I Find Undeniably Of A Unique Satisfaction. Stay Healthy. MCFC Dave
I'm just hoping you show us Villa Bella Darren 😄😄😁😁👍👍 Jolly Boys Outing is an absolute classic,I can just watch that over and over again ,bloody brilliant !
I never visited Margate when I lived in the UK. Had I known they were filming OF&H there, I'd have headed there like a shot. Loved the series, one of the finest of all time. Enjoyed the video, Darren, lovely jubbly, my son. That's one of the great British seafronts.
It looks freezing cold 🥶 My mum and dad used to take my brothers and me there when we were kids, certainly changed a lot. Hope you had a nice time visiting your mum.
hi darren nice video,i remember going down to margate with my family every bank holiday in the 60s an early 70s,we always had a great time thanks for bringing back memories
A wonderful trip Darren. My first holidays as a child was in Ramsgate, Margate's neighbour. I do love Broadstairs and Margate too. Only Fools Jolly Boys Outing was the best ever. I can watch it over and over again 👍😁 Hope your Mum enjoyed Mothers Day 👍😁
Done that walk on Friday Darren parked at westgate walked through to the old lido often do that being a Canterbury lad not far for us to travel fish chips and ice cream can't beat it lol
I really enjoyed this one Darren thank you. Wishing your mum a happy Mother’s Day I’m sure you spoilt her bless you. Margate is a lovely little Town and for some of us holds great memories yourself obviously included. May I be nosey and ask what part of West London you were born just out of interest? Nice to see you enjoying the rain it’s so under rated 😊 Have a lovely rest of your week Darren.
Trigger: And I've lost my Dolphin 😂 Absolutely sad what's happened to Margate compared to how it was 25 years ago. Same as Folkestone with the market and Rotunda. Margate and Folkestone was my Happy Place on a Saturday and Sundays 😢
😂😂I done the same yesterday was in Margate to see my mum for Mother’s Day and also had a drive along where you are . Must have only just missed you . I think the tide was just coming in so must have been there just before you 👍

That was a great video! Walking in the rain, lovely.😀

Been many times! Always much nicer when sunny! I do love broadstairs which is further down the coastline.

What a shame that England seaside towns have fallen !!! 😕
Not fallen just changed and the weather makes it look gloomy.
Margate was shit 40 years ago ffs
Fallen to what ?? Always been poverty and deprivation in sea side towns
I love your walk about videos, brilliant.
Loved Margate and Ramsgate as a kid lots of trips from London for hols
Great video Darren thanks 😊
Thank you Darren I enjoyed the tour of Margate Shane in Sydney 🦘🇦🇺
