- Join me on a tour of the seaside town of Margate. We start the tour on the seafront and check out the famous Old Kent Market and walk to the tidal pool on the beach and what is it like to take a swim? Then I take a tour of the 100 year old amusement park on the seafront called Dreamland, Walk into the town and the old town of Margate with it's famous pub's and boutique shops, We then head to the famous Shell Grotto which is an ornate subterranean passageway in Margate, Kent. Almost all the surface area of the walls and roof is covered in mosaics created entirely of seashells, totalling about 2,000 square feet of mosaic, or 4.6 million shells and no one knows why it was built! And finally we take a look at the abandoned Margate Lido.

Hi Tim, you missed a treat, there was a Chippy that sold take away Saith and Chips not sure about mushy peas being sold. But I remember it was £1.50 for Saith and chips! They have another shop, which had a restaurant selling Saith in Ramsgate - they made their money from tea, soft drinks and pickled onions! Don’t remember the mushy peas. Obvious reason allergies…
A 1/2p in the slot machines on a jetty near the left hand pool, which was for bathing and the right hand pool was a boating lake. There was a pier which fell into disuse, query what caused it! They have only recentlyish blown it up.
The tall building is/was Local Authority flats… you did ask!
I don’t know if the Margate Caves are still open.
There used to be 3 hotels, joined by an underground tunnel, which was a lovely Butlins… Many happy, short breaks, but it is now demolished.
Also in a square there was another hotel, visited by Alex Polize(sp) The Hotel Inspector - probably on RUclips somewhere.
There was a swimming pool, a gym and tanning tables, the huge entertainment area with the original cash office.
We made great friends with a Redcoat, who made us laugh about another (female) Red who was a bit dowdy - she said that she needed 3 T’s - Tampax, tweezers and a thong!!!
There was the usual restaurant, very much catering to the masses - although you could pay a small fee for the week and eat in the PERMIER dining room which was a carvery! Breakfasts were buffet style and if you upgraded you could have ‘all you can eat.’ The canteen only served a one of everything style breakfast!

There were locals saying about Margate, Cliftonville, another *****ville and Kosoville’ (full of Kosovans who took ALL the very poorly paid jobs which made for a rapid decline… added to cheaper holidays abroad!

Funny story in the early days (BJ & BC - b4 having my children.)
We had parked up, on a chilly day and left our dog in the car whilst we ate.
Went we we’re going back to the car we saw a dog in the harbour area, thoroughly enjoying itself, when we looked again, it was OUR DOG, Billy!
We had a sunroof on our car, no it wasn’t open… the buttons on the central console, Billy had stood on the buttons and lowered the windows! We got them rewired so they DIDN’T work unless the key was in the ignition.
Could you please do a tour of Battersea Dogs & Cats home? I’m available for some of the history to it although there’s plenty of information out there on the web about its growth from it’s original inception… Or even, shock horror, a Battersea history book made of ‘REAL PAPER!’
Also the famous and infamous Battersea Power station, which is steeped in history!
I live for the Seaside! It’s why I moved from Barnet (Northern Line - High Barnet.) to St Osyth and more recently Clacton.

I remember a family outing to Margate in the early 60's from Essex. We had to go via London and over Tower Bridge - no Dartford Crossing then. We went in Dreamland and thought it was fantastic. Later my dad found a pound note on the promenade and the four of us had fish and chips, bread and butter and teas and there was still a couple of shillings left over!

You probably remember that one of the pools was for swimming the other was a boating pool - far too expensive for my parents! lol

@@WalkWithMeTim In some ways yes, because most people think it is less than savoury.
Spent a weekend there last year. You can feel the faded glory. But you can also see signs that it's on its way up again.
I think it is so sad; that the beautiful Lido has been left derelict. The art deco architecture is beautiful and I'm sure it could be restored to its former beauty with a little TLC. I think I read that another resort had a derelict Lido, which has been restored and is once again very popular. I hope the one at Margate gets the same attention and is brought back to life. Yet another great tour Tim. Thank you.

I grew up in Margate and emigrated to America in 1968. Thank you for featuring Margate, it brought back many fun memories of being a teenager in a seaside town.

This was a real walk down memory lane for me! During the 60's, me and my grandparents stayed for a week in a guesthouse every summer in the area and we would walk into Margate along the front. Going back for short break in June so definitely will visit a few places you highlighted. 😎

Great video, Tim. You have shown Margate in a far more positive light than the run down town I saw last summer.
I found the Shell Grotto a bit disappointing; it’s probably that all the shells have been bleached or that it was too busy when we went… much of the town looks very tired.
But, we loved Dreamland - it’s free entry and then you buy tokens for what you want to go on - the scenic railway rollercoaster (one of the oldest in the UK) is great fun!
And, the beaches are lovely too - you can see that work is being done to try and help Margate but it needs far more!
It's beautiful there. Went there for the OFAH meet n greet in 2019 with my kids and afterwards we went swimming.
Had a gorgeous holiday here this year. Never been before but loved it so will defo be back. Lovely beaches and swimming and great sunsets 🌅

I believe the soldiers were ‘touched up’ with spray paint, last time I was there!!!

Thank you really enjoyed that, very professionally done I lived in Herne Bay from 5 years old, so would often go to Margate with my parents, but have lived in France for over 20 years and haven't been back so a real walk down merory lane, I am 64 now

Hi Tim. Many many thousands of us praise your videos but I don't think enough of us praise your videographer skills. I would like to do that right now. The technical quality of your videos is second to none. I can see that you use a smartphone for your live stream & a DJI Pocket 2 ( on a monopod) for your other videos. I know that the pocket 2 has a tendency to over expose scenes & often blows out the sky. Your's are always perfect with no hint of over exposure. Your video editing is also perfect with some great transitions. I am so impressed. I know that your skills & techniques may be a secret but it would be fantastic to see a behind the scenes video of your rigs & editing set-up. Looking forward to the next video.

The beach is so lovely
Plymouth has tidal pools too. Free to use. The lido is gorgeous too. Would love to see a video on Plymouth, lived there for five years

Hi Tim,great video.When I was a kid in the 50s & 60s we would go to Margate on a coach trip and Dreamland was THE place to go to.There were side shows and one I remember was of the headless woman who rode a Lambretta scooter.My parents wouldn't let me see the show.And while we waited for our coach in the coach park there was a bloke with mini coaches which kids could sit on while he drove around the coach park.Also from the coach park there was a massive hoarding which was painted as the Queen Mary passenger liner,I don't think it was the same size as the real ship but it was huge.Great family memories.I haven't been there for years and I only love about a half hours drive away.Perhaps I will go and have a day out there this week.Keep up the great videos.

Can I make three points on that comment?
1. Name a seaside resort that has had an increase in visitors as a result of public investment. It doesn't work.
2.Seaside tourism has never declined, and it has never been boosted by 'staycations'. It has increased at the same rate every year since it's possible to measure - 1970. Never fluctuates.
3.A staycation is when you don't go on holiday but stay in your own home and have days out instead. It's not a holiday in the UK.

Hi Tim Loved seeing this my husbands grandparents originated from Margate and Broadstairs. My husband and I haven't been there for ages . I remember when I was 19 Dreamland was called Ben bon brothers then later they changed it back to Dreamland. They have the oldest scenic railway in there built in something like 1920 it has a brake man on it like Great Yarmouth. The shell grotto looks amazing I've never been in there. Hi Tim the tower block is residential the word on the grapevine is there are a lot of single mums and their babies live there. I agree Margate wouldn't look the same without the tower block even though it can do with tarting up a bit. I have been coming to Margate on and off all my life and I'm in my early sixties now
I visit dreamland a couple of times as year and attend gigs at dreamland which is a great venue for music. There are bad parts like any town but we always have a good time and seek out the hidden gems that the town has to offer.
I might be completely wrong, but perhaps the reason there is a lot of green paint is because the resorts were serviced by Great Western Railways; who's colour scheme was green. I know a lot of these resorts were initially developed by the railways in Victorian times. Giving people cheap and easy access to the seaside from smokey inland towns and cities. Like I said I might be completely wrong, but I know the railways played a big part, making these resorts accessible to working class people. Strange why it cost so much to travel by train these days. It is definitely cheaper to go by car today.

I remember going there with my group of friends. Our coach caught fire just before we were due to return. Train strikes and what with it being a bank holiday weekend, we struggled finding someplace to crash.
Enjoyed that Tim. Looks a nice place to visit, which was surprising as it always gets bad press.
Jolly Boys outing is my fave episode so worth a visit just for that I reckon!

Growing up in the 90’s Margates glory had faded but Dreamland was lots of fun. Being a teen in the 00’s Margate had lost its shine but the Lido cliff top was good fun for its rock/metal nights and echoes bar underneath for the indie stuff. The complex was apprantly kicking in the 80’s/90’s rave scene - videos on RUclips look incredible. The actual complex is massive but would require significant funds to renew it to its former glory unfortunately . I think there are some urban explorer videos which show the decay underneath the cliff top , great video Tim, hope to return there soon with family to enjoy the seaside amusements once again !

I visited Margate last week for the first time since 2015. To be honest I was disappointed. It still has a long way to go. My family used to go to Cliftonville every year when I was small.

I lived in margate from when I was born in 1986 to 2017. No live near Lincoln in Lincolnshire. When I was younger Dreamland was really good but as years went by it was run down (by a very greedy man) and then closed. But they opened it up again and is better but not quite there yet. The seafront again used to have amusements all the way along before the fire (again the greedy man) ripped a whole in the Golden mile. I really hope Margate can get back to what it used to be like.

Hey Tim wow video I used toive in margate from 2011 to 2014 it was son derelict then the old market you went into was all closed down when I lived there it once was a cinema, the tower block you mentioned is called Arlington house it used to have shops that sold rock bucket and spades and it is a residential property owned mostly by the Godden family the same one who owned dreamland in 2008 when the scenic railway in dreamland caught fire. I was also there for the opening of The turner gallery which caused controversy over its creation.

The block of flats is called Arlington House, it’s full of flats. Stunning views of Margate from up there. I have done a few stories for the local paper from there. I was there photographer. Hope this helps. Brilliant video. Closest you have been to my home town of Whitstable.

Visited for the first time a few years back on a stag do, have gone back every year since, always a decent break. If you turn left from the train station, the beaches are great and virtually empty. Broadstairs and Whitstable nearby are well worth visiting.

I live in Margate and I go there all the time
Arlington House, Margate built in 1964 and said to be haunted when i was growing up. It had a really bad reputation with drugs and drunks so we was never allowed to go near there when it got dark this was in the 80's. i do remember in the summer there was a traveling carnival on the green between Arlington house and the train station that was fun.

the massive grey building next to the train station is in fact residential. mainly council flats i believe. sums up margate really.... i mean the best part of margate is the train station to leave!
The big tower block is Arlington House flats 👍 all the disused shop area surrounding it & Dreamland car park are sold & due to be redeveloped into flats
Tim, if you had walked through the car park behind the Turner Art Gallery, and looked over the sea wall, you would have seen a life sized bronze man in the sea and he can be fully seen at low tide. yes, it’s a real shame about the Lido they were going to reinstate it, funds permitting but work seems to have stopped. Great blog by the way, keep them coming 👍

My parents took my sister and myself on holiday every year back in the 1970,s to Westbrook next bay to Margate, I remember in Dreamland their used to be a small zoo . You could still see a few of the Victorian animal cages incorporated in the boundary wall at the back and to to right of the park. Most have gone now but i believe their is still around 3-4 still in existence at the back . When i was in my late teens and 20,s Margate was still a good draw for a day out. But like many seaside towns Margate really was neglected for years before they started to invest money back in the area with reopening up Dreamland and the new Turner building. Its a shame that there is so much graffiti and many a building still needing a lick of paint. The old pier i remember too but i was very young when people were still allowed on it. and most years what i remember it was shut off. I remember seeing Lulu, bruce forsyth , mike and Bernie winters at the Lido which was a nice place to go for evening entertainment a outside was all plant beds
I'm from Canada and I started doing my family tree a few years ago. I discovered that my 4x great grandfather was James Newlove. He was the schoolteacher of Margate whose son "discovered" the Shell Grotto on their property in 1835. Their daughter, Fanny, helped to run it as a tourist attraction soon after. I'll have to get there some day.

I have been to Margate once down on the high speed via Ashford I thought it took a long time. When I got to Margate I had a look around I went into Dreamland which I quite enjoyed. In my opinion I think The seafront is a bit run down and the town centre needs an upgrade. I recommend you visit Ramsgate at some point.
There is a Margate seaside town in Kwazulu-Natal South Africa as well.😊
Tim,Scarborough spa was the 1st seaside resort in the 17th century I believe Margate was in the 1700’s I remember you mentioned in your Scarborough vlog regarding the spa waters in the earlier century

Last visited Margate in 2022 with my friend and experienced Dreamland, Margate Caves and Shell Grotto aswell traveled in by train from rest of Kent. Interesting seafront and town Margate & is somewhere when can like to visit. Love Dreamland and see so much potential for it, now that Manston Airport has been fully green light to happen as both a Cargo and Passenger airport. Would in my opinion love to see a new signature coaster or new attraction built in Dreamland? Maybe an RMC Custom layout compacted coaster? Dark ride featuring all moments of past from when Dreamland began up to modern day a.k.a all its history? Think something like that would be epic & good for park? Or a modern log flume with loads of theming be a good addition here? Yeah don't know much about Grotto, have made a visit and found it interesting, but yeah its an interesting one that, hopefully one day may actually find out what it was used for? Be interesting. Never visited & knew the Lido was there, thought that was further along, interesting to see that. Would be good if could get that back open especially for events, water floats under cover cinema would be good idea, maybe could do what they do in America? Show Jaws on screen or The Meg? Aswell have it opened as multiple activity area? Maybe even build it into a hotel? Entertainment place? I'm not sure? But nice vlog, really enjoyed, nice views from Harbour arm, nice photography and videography. Think Only Fools and Horses was filmed on area where the shell statue is located on end of harbor arm? Not sure for certain, also they have since tried building hotel near where Turner Contemporary is located aswell in building space where Empire of Light was filmed? But nothing else has been mentioned about it? But nice vlog, have liked and shared & look forward to seeing more vlogs in future. Cheers. 😀👍
I visit my partner who lives in Margate at least once a month. It’s such a beautiful place. That block is Arlington House, it’s a residential block :)

A great vid Tim. I grew up in North Kent, so Margate along with Broadstairs and Ramsgate was my 'playground' while growing up! I still have family in Margate, so visit regularly. Infact I was there a just few days ago! It's changed over the years, like all UK resorts. It's still very popular place to visit with lots of attractions and a great beach. A great train service from London and very easy by road from London/M25. 👍💯

You shoulda checked out the Walpole Bay Hotel, just on the cliff above that last tiny beach. Its a time capsule hotel.
Thanks for showing your trip to Margate you did a great job!. Erm .... what can I say about what I saw .... the council and the local MP Roger Gale (Con) needs to put a lot more effort into making Margate look as attractive and welcoming as the other resorts in the south especially the ones you have recently visited (now you can see why Hastings won in your poll). Perhaps a lottery donation or government grant is needed to restore the lido, obviously Thanet council is too poor or don't care to inject funds. The tidal pools were very intetesting but need a clean up..Glad you went so we can see it.

The tower you referred to at the beginning of the video is called Arlington House, I wouldn't call it famous, but it's very flattering of you to refer to it as famois, and it is residential property. I haven't been to Margate in years, so seeing it in a new light.

Another great video Tim. My friend and I try to pay Margate a visit every few years as we are both big OFAH fans. Each time we go we manage to find a new filming location or spot something from a scene. Regardless of the OFAH link we've grown to love the place and as you rightly state, it's worth just wandering around as you'll be amazed at what you'll find. Oh, and I think Del and Rodney sat on an upturned boat on the pier? (It's also had railings added since that scene was filmed too).

the tower block is residential flats.
The tower block of flats near Margate train station is called Arlington House. When I was growing up in the area in 70s, they were housing flats that unfortunately had quite a bad name. I used to live just across from clocktower, which you heard chiming in your video, and worked at Dreamland in early 80s. Brings back memories, as now live in Cornwall.

My friend who is now in her 90,s took her record player into the sunken garden. So innocent but considered naughty a the time. I have as child good memories of Margate as it was a grand day out. But like most seaside towns it is to fair pretty derelict now.
Met the love of my life here but only knew her for 10 days! 🤪
Her name was Anna and she was there with her friend Sam (Samantha). I was there with my mate Dave in , I think 1986. Often wonder what happened to her. 😓

Arlington House (the tall block of flats that dominates the skyline) is a concrete eyesore (always has been). Underneath it there used to be a parade of shops (including a great joke shop) but I think they're all boarded-up now.
I remember in the late 70s (when I was young) a boy fishing in the tidal pool that Tim walked around, caught a baby blue shark in there! I can also (just about) remember when Margate's Lido was in use (as a Lido) - shame to see the state it's in now.
