My Mum was from Kent and had relatives in Ramsgate, we spent many holidays there when I was a child. It has changed beyond recognition since those days.
I Just viewed this delightful video. It caught my eye because my wife Eva and I who reside in California in the U.S. but adore England for its beauty and history will be traveling back in May 2021. Because we usually come once a year and have been staying longer we are contemplating buying a "base" flat in Ramsgate. Our dear friends who live in Kent near Gravesend took us to Ramsgate in 2019. In fact I've been looking at flats in Wellington Crescent. We've been in the Big Tunnel and had tea at Whitherspoons. It's a great place! Thanks for the video
Ramsgate was where I had relations and spent my first childhood holidays, and has kept its magic for me. John does full justice to it, in his spellbinding way.
Just found your video on my recommend page. Can't believe someone has made a holiday video on my home town. So many locals complain about Ramsgate but in my opinion it is the most beautiful seaside town in Thanet. Thank you for doing our town justice. ❤️
I used to live in Ramsgate firstly in Princes Road and later on a world war two, German luftwaffe boat that the RAF captured at the end of the war. We (my parents and I) were fortunate enough to have met some of the RAF crew and managed to reunite them for an afternoon back in 1987/88. The steps (Jacobs ladder) shown in the video were my my third lot of steps each day on my long walk to St. Lawrence c of e school. The boat was moored in the inner (non tidal) Harbour eventually but was previously in the outer harbour on the opposite side of the pier to where was walked. When the trawlers came in each night, I would help the fishermen carry their catch up to the awaiting vans ready for market. Fish are regulated by size at market and under sized fish aren't allowed though are often still caught unintentionally and these under sized fish would then be tipped out for those of us who helped. I would put mine into bags and then proceed to go knocking on doors up and around Spencer Square (where Van Gogh lived and taught) and Albion Place (where Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 2nd both took holidays). In the latter part of 1988 I moved to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk with my Mother. Ramsgate is still fond in my heart though.
Another fabulous video John, having lived here for 30 years so good to see my town painted in a very positive light, chuffed that you got me into this video as you said you would when we met then, Great local knowledge from your sister as well, There is quite a biut of you tube footage on the Ramsgate tunnels and the exploration of them, keep up the good work and really enjoyed this one, top work
Really lovely to see your Wife & Sister and then to see some of your friends. Adds a different element to your work. Usual high production values - quality work.
This was really wonderful! Both of you make a lovely team. I smiled through the whole video. It was like taking the holiday with you and meeting your friends and family. This is a treasure! I, thank you, for this video!
Nice to watch your Kent videos from Canada. It's really neat to see where my ancestors came from. I can trace my DNA in Kent back almost 200 years and hope to visit there soon.
John, what a beautiful calming video. You dont know how much you make me enjoy sundays! All the best to your wife and your sister and have a lovely week!
Ah that was nice! I just moved here after ten years in London. I’m South African and honestly was never happy in London or the UK, but ramsgate has changed all that. Lovely town! Great people! Great beaches!
Me and my partner stayed here for a night at the start of August, I hadn’t been there in years I forgot how beautiful it is. I will definitely be going again next year.
I moved here recently. It isn't quite as self-conciously "arty" as Whitstable or Margate, but it's getting that way. The history around every corner is astonishing. Pugin lived here too and built an abbey.
I am an old Ramsgatonian born 1944 there and John has made a very good film of the place.I didn't realize just how lucky I was to see the best of Ramsgate. There was a "Merrie England" pleasure Park on the East cliff seafront. The building called "Pleasurama" was once a railway station for Londoners to come to bathe using bathing machines (preserving modesty). John could perhaps have mentioned John le Mesurier (Sgt Wilson in "Dad's Army" having a hotel on Grange Road) opposite to the Hotel de Ville pub."Captain Mainwaring" had his yacht in the inner harbour. Small hovercraft "Swift" and "Sure" were based in the outer harbour and they went to Calais. They were too small for the rough seas! The big ones took 20 cars and travelled from Pegwell bay and went across the Goodwin Sands to Calais.I went with my daughter on one and it took just 40 mins to get to France to buy a bottle of wine and cheese for a little party with "me old mum" after the return trip.Good memories. All the best to all.Paul
Must be 7 years since I was in Ramsgate. Had an icecream on the front with my two greyhounds. It looks very genteel. Loved the thatched cottage. that was a welcome surprise.
Found that really enjoyable, i have lived in Ramsgate for many years now and learned so much from your vlog. As a hobbyist photographer and vlogger i can appreciate the work that went into making this. I have shot some lovely sun rises from Ramsgate and the surrounding areas, there are worse places to live :-)
Lived in ramsgate for 50 years, at one point in the 18th century cottage, first building on the right, in waterloo place. My mother was a ramsgate girl and worked in harrison's cafe at the harbour at the time of the dunkirk evacuation. She spent her 19th birthday serving tea and butties to the returning sevicemen. Her recollections can still be heard in the ramsgate tunnels museum, just dial elsie's number on the bakelite phones.
Hello Lisa, My name is June Johnson, I lived from 1945 in Kent Terrace(I had an Uncle and his wife live in a house called 'Angelsea Capri ' in Waterloo Place...my uncle was a lovely man his wife was not so nice....I knew Harrisons very well, I knew mainly the kitchen people and growing up with them, they were always very kind to me. i am now 77 years old and have lived in Germany for the last 20 years, (in Lutherstadt Wittenberg) I miss England and Ramsgate a lot, I miss the harbour and the beach....I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and a safe New Year....June
Thanks john...I'm Ramsgate born and bred..I love my town and hope this video will bring people to visit us..its a very informative video with excellent dialoge
That was a lovely film. How nice to meet your wife and your sister. Nice people all of you. I like how you show the magic of "ordinary" places. I shouldn't think I'll ever visit Ramsgate so it's so nice to see it and other places through your lens,as it were. I think that were very brainwashed or programmed from young to think that everywhere beautiful and interesting is a long way off from where we live and costs a lot of money to get to. I think recent lockdown opened a lot of people's eyes to how beautiful their own humble neighbourhoods are.
Thanks for such a great walk John. Ramsgate is a place full of surprises. Certainly one of the places I’m going to visit it’s on my walk list. I’ve just been to Harwich and had a good walk round another great seaside port and I do believe the end of the Essex way. Now that would be a great walk. Regards to you and yours James.
thanks James - the Essex way has been on my list for a while. I did the section from Epping to Ongar last September, there's a video on the channel here, would love to get back out there
Ain't British seaside towns fantastic - run down, gentrified or in between. Atmospheric, haunting and mysterious. Should all be world heritage sites and invested in ( wasn't that in the last Labour Manifesto! They almost had a finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist if you leave out the lousey British Media!).Magnificent introductory view of harbour, cliffs and block of buildings. And some other beautiful shots esp 16.18 back towards the seafront, harbour and town. Blimey the largest Wetherspoons in the world. What's not too like about Ramsgate? I like to imagine you all had a pint in there. Never been to Ramsgate but will now, soon.
@@p.m.gallows3199 You've got a point, John does paint a rosy picture of the town. I walked around Ramsgate yesterday. Like most British towns - largely ignored and under-invested by all Governments and politicians. You can't avoid this opinion if you walk down from the station. But I don't think it's going to get better any time soon! Makes you wonder where all the tax disappears to! It certainly isn't being reinvested usefully into things that really matter like jobs, training, health, education and decent, and enough, council housing.
@@unchattytwit I visited 2day.. walked down from the station and the houses were gorgeous.. just checked zoopla and most not shy of 350 .. further down some nice flats and the property on and around harbour amazing.. possibly a few grungy streets but hey that’s ok. I was very impressed but possibly not drawn to any doom and gloom areas!
Your a book of knowledge John Rogers wonderful video and well Documented just love watching your walks around the country what a brilliant experience to know what you know about Towns ,city’s river walks and much more .

Brilliant - great to watch. Wasn't expecting this and look forward to the next 'wherever that may be'. Have not been to Ramsgate since crossing the channel in a hovercraft in 1987.
Lovely to see this, I walked through Ramsgate today so it was interestingly cool to see a lot of it on a well made informative video. Many thanks this was good to watch
Another great and informative video John. I learnt a lot. I love Ramsgate. I grew up in Kent and still have family in Ramsgate, so still visit regularly.
Thanks John for a great Ramsgate ramble- I really look forward to your weekly walks. It brought back memories of day trips there when I was a kid living in London. I went back in the 90s and thought it looked a bit tired but your video shows a much rejuvenated resort and it gave me a new perspective on its really interesting history. Good to at last meet Mrs R and your sister too.
Great video thanks. My home town born and bred. Relocated to Sussex now. Yes, the only royal harbour Ramsgate is full of tunnels. The Queen Charlotte used to have a wall mural painted by the officers of the Napoleonic Wars. I could go on lol, I knew every street in Ramsgate having been a window cleaner. I cleaned all the shops and pubs in Addington St. Thanks again for a great vid. Of course you have only touched upon the local history - Ramsgate is rammed with historical facts and stories what a truly wonderful town, I remember very easily those town centre streets being jam packed with people shopping etc. as it was in the times of the Napoleonic Wars my friend. It pleases me that you enjoyed my home town. If only you visited it in the 50’s and 60’s… it was fantastic. Warm Regards and best wishes to you and your lovely wife, Dave ✌️
I grew up in Ramsgate - and have since lived all over the world. Haven't actually been back to Ramsgate since 2004 - but this was such a treat. Lovely to see some of the old places - and it's looking a little better than it has in recent years. Best of all were the seagulls - my favorite sound! Next time, maybe you could go to the West Cliff! That King's Theatre was a cinema back in the 60's!
Big thanks to you for reviving many memories...i lived in Ramsgate ( Royal Rd. )for a few years some 60 years ago before a return to London... Very little has changed other than shop names . ( i still have family living there ) Oh i watch films in the Kings ... then it became a snooker hall
I think the tunnels that your sister mentioned were an extended part of what was originally an underground railway that ran to the harbour . Anyone who knows Ramsgate and travelled there by train will be aware that the railway station is somewhat distant from the beach and town . This is because the railways services on the Kent coast were built by various rail companies . So there was an underground railway that took you more conveniently to the harbour but that was closed - not least because there was a rail accident in the tunnel itself . ✌️
Another great video John. How funny that i used to live in Thanet (Cliftonville) most of my life until i moved to Woodford 2006. I discovered your channel about a year ago and even cycled passed you at the start of the lock down on one of your river Rodin walks. I actually still visit Thanet a lot as most of the gigs my band play are in and around Ramsgate. We are called Trilogy and i'm sure i've seen Cathy. Maybe at one of our gigs. We play covers and are known for our Lonnie Donegan songs as one of his sons is in the band. Funnily enough Lonnie lived in Woodford for a while. Six degrees of seperation at work eh? Also they do walks through the Ramsgate tunnels, Its a great setup and an interesting and informative walk. Maybe it could be your first below ground walk? Great vid and see you on the next one.
Great to see your sister and wife, Heidi along for the walk. Being born and raised in Sydney's western suburbs myself I know very well the beaches Heidi mentioned. Ramsgate beach seems very nice. I was surprised to se the gold sand. It is similar to our beaches here. When Heidi spoke I was half expecting her to sound like she just left. Clearly she's been living in England a long time. Great content as usual John👍
Really good to watch a great tour with positive comments on Ramsgate. As you mentioned in your video, so many more lovely sights around Ramsgate so hoping you'll make another wonderful video when you're visiting your sister again. Plus Ramsgate's continually improving so that's always interesting for viewers.
I spent all my childhood holidays in Ramsgate, we camped a St Nicholas at Wade (sharing the site with sheep) and went into town or to the beach everyday. Some of the best days of my life. I’ve planned to return at some point for the last 30 odd years, this video has made the return more urgent. Thank you for the nudge
I enjoyed this delightful ramble through Ramsgate, with your wife and sister contributing. I always learn something interesting and love the scenery and ambiance your videos create.
Loverly video john a place I've never been 😃loverly too to meet your wife and sister, thanks to you all for a grand tour of Ramsgate 😄nice to see you getting out and about again 👍
Sally Line car ferry used to go to Dunkerque in Northern France , I also used the hovercraft to Calais, Hoverspeed were the first company to charge one price for a vehicle and all its passengers.
Correction. It was Hoverlloyd who started the service from Ramsgate and the one price for vehicle and occupants. Hoverspeed only came into existence when Hoverlloyd and Seaspeed merged. Pegwell Bay closed as a public hoverport and became a servicing depot for the hovercraft.
You showed the town and the house where I grew up! It was a walk back to my childhood that has made me homesick. The temple was the Kings Cinema. Pining for the smell of the harbour, rock being made and the music!
Ahh... I remember it well . Gazing bleary eyed from Annie’s flat in Wellington terrace trying to see France following a night in The lamplighters and listening to Alan hulls pipedream album and never running out of skins . Large mugs of milk and honey at bedtime and visiting Annie’s mum and dads pub The pewter pot in broadstairs and getting the train with my friend billy , drained back to London on the Sunday night .
Very enjoyable thank you I remember Ramsgate very well I toured a circus in broadstairs so remember billing Ramsgate for the show this bought back many memories of Ramsgate
Manly and Balmoral beaches lol... (ex-Manly resident) --- John, you marvel - you do urban walks equally as well as rural, what a talent. And two lovely ladies and a brilliant artist whose books I will pursue. Thank you, and not one mention of the dreaded you know what...such a relief.
Thank you for this video, good vibes and very insightful! We’re staying in Broadstairs for a week and will definitely visit Ramsgate for lunch and a walk 🌊
John your favorite street Addington street, I was told used to have a weekly market. And I agree with you it has a lot of charm! Hopefully more people will invest in this street and it will become once more a busy vibrant place. I love the Falstaff!!!
In spite of living in Broadstairs, I recognised almost every street you featured in (sunny) Ramsgate. I'll be there this lunchtime for a pint in The Artillery pub. ---- Generally very fond of Ramsgate. Excellent video. Thanks.
Really loved this glimpse of Ramsgate and also the company, John - yay for the female presence in the form of Cathy & Heidi! (I was hoping that Heidi was going to start reading from Bob&Roberta's book ...)
Thank you for the Lovely video John and a special hello to Heidi as I also grew up in Manly. My wonderful Grandparents had a home on the hill above the ferry pier just a short walk from little Manly Beach and my Mum and Dad built a house in Forestville. I also married an Englishman and we are currently living in Australia. My lovely sister in law Debbie I Lives in Ramsgate. We long to be able to revisit but for know we must settle for FaceTime calls so it was so nice to see the sights. Thank you again Regards from Australia 🐨🇦🇺🐨
I was in Ramsgate a couple of days ago. My daughter and young Grandson’s live there. There are some lovely little cafes where the Sailor’s Church is. Please come and film in Herne Bay it’s a lovely little seaside town with lots of history.
My family have lived in Ramsgate since the 1700s .so were definitely born and bred.. My great great great grandad.. William Whitmore.. has a gorgeous bronze plaque on the wall the sailors church at the harbour in his honour , for the work esp. to the smack boys and people of rhe town.. Th is a great video of the bits of Ramsgate that get overlooked.. kind regards
I also have lots of stories from my family .. my Nan had plenty of stories about down the tunnels during the war .. she had to get married.my grandad inthe crypt in St George's church , during an air raid when the church filled withe people for shelter .. And my sonsister great great grandad was awarded the Victoria cross for his bravery during the bombing of the gas works .. he was a hero! He went in and pulled lots of people outility of the debris .. Iv sooo many storiesingle if you ever want me to share them xxx
I think walking had become one of my favourite things to do recently, now that the lockdown is easing slowly its urged me to get out and explore nature as it is now
Not sure why I watched this all the way through seeing as I've lived here for nearly 30 years but you walked past my house towards the end which was a surprise! Nice content keep it up!

I've never seen ramsgate look this good haha good job
Oh gosh - can't watch this now. I was in Ramsgate the very same week visiting friends from when I lived there....Looking forward to this.
I moved eighteen months ago to Ramsgate. Loads here.
Got to explore around more...
Great vid and see you on the next one.
i used to live next door to that white house with blue frontage,31 chapel place, nice seeing ramsgate again thank you.
Fab walk, thanks John. So lovely to meet Heidi - hope we get to see her again :-) X
Great content as usual John👍
thanks William - yes Heidi's been in the UK for over 20 years now. I would've added Tamarama to the list which was our beach when we met in the 90's
Really good to watch a great tour with positive comments on Ramsgate. As you mentioned in your video, so many more lovely sights around Ramsgate so hoping you'll make another wonderful video when you're visiting your sister again. Plus Ramsgate's continually improving so that's always interesting for viewers.
Another one for my day trip list. What great history. Loved seeing your fam.x
Great to see you in Ramsgate. I would love to see more filming about the old railway and air raid tunnels.
Rambling in Ramsgate great video I love the quirky charm of seaside towns. Watch out John your wife & sister are going to upstage you 😉
I enjoyed this delightful ramble through Ramsgate, with your wife and sister contributing. I always learn something interesting and love the scenery and ambiance your videos create.
Thanks Carole
@@JohnRogersWalks you're welcome, of course. :-)
Packed full of interesting facts, wonderful presentation coupled with soothing, ambient music. Heil John Rogers, King of the walking videographers.
Loverly video john a place I've never been 😃loverly too to meet your wife and sister, thanks to you all for a grand tour of Ramsgate 😄nice to see you getting out and about again 👍
Very enjoyable indeed - thanks for posting
I moved here last year from south east London. A beautiful town and a much safer place to bring up children.
How mad, we moved from by thamesmead!
I went on the fast craft in 97 across to Ostende in October of that year was a mild Saturday day I remember it well. I do miss the hovercraft
Where was the pewter pot in broadstairs. I’ve lived in broadstairs for 25 years can’t remember where it was.
Very enjoyable thank you I remember Ramsgate very well I toured a circus in broadstairs so remember billing Ramsgate for the show this bought back many memories of Ramsgate
Fab video of my adopted home. You should go to Deal, my actual home town. Its a fabulous little town.
Loved your video of this very special place
Manly and Balmoral beaches lol... (ex-Manly resident) --- John, you marvel - you do urban walks equally as well as rural, what a talent. And two lovely ladies and a brilliant artist whose books I will pursue. Thank you, and not one mention of the dreaded you know what...such a relief.
Many thanks indeed. I should have given an honorary mention to Tamarama Beach where we lived when we first met.
That was great John - really cheered me up after a hard day at work
thanks Swoddy
Thanks Mariana - just need to get Heidi on more walks with me now
Thank you for the Lovely video John and a special hello to Heidi as I also grew up in Manly.
Thank you again
Regards from Australia 🐨🇦🇺🐨
Lovely! I thought it was already winter in the UK. I really like that town.
I was in Ramsgate a couple of days ago. My daughter and young Grandson’s live there. There are some lovely little cafes where the Sailor’s Church is. Please come and film in Herne Bay it’s a lovely little seaside town with lots of history.

@@JohnRogersWalks No worries thank you
I think walking had become one of my favourite things to do recently, now that the lockdown is easing slowly its urged me to get out and explore nature as it is now
Not sure why I watched this all the way through seeing as I've lived here for nearly 30 years but you walked past my house towards the end which was a surprise! Nice content keep it up!
A lovely video John . Great to meet the family
