It triggers me that people could ever think of him as a villain. Yes he fell quickly to the rings corruption but not out of malice or desire for power for himself, he'd spent his entire adult life fighting Mordor alongside his brother with no hope of victory. The desire to protect his people drove him mad with desperation. Boromir is the most human character in the story.

In his mind, they had led and protected Gondor for so long that there was no need for a king, as the line of Stewards was also descended from Numenor, though not nearly as pure as Elendil's line. Boromir was one of the youngest members of the fellowship--younger than Frodo and barely older than the other hobbits. He had a special comradery towards them, like an older brother. Perhaps he was thinking of his own little brother back home, still fighting to protect everything they knew and lived.
Boromir's love and faith in Gondor led to his downfall. Like Frodo's love for the shire, Gondor was always on Boromir's mind. Especially after leaving Lothlorien, he gets increasingly agitated as the others refuse to go anywhere near Gondor, as their lack of trust feels like a slap in the face to all that his people have sacrificed to keep them safe. Ironically, he himself is slow to recognize the contributions of the Dunedain. The ring works on Boromir and his doubts about a quest that seemed doomed from the beginning. He grows angry that in the off-chance that this incredibly dangerous mission is a success, his people will be the sacrificial lamb to Mordor in the meantime.
Those fears and his relative youth are what make him so easily tempted by the ring--and that to me is the tragedy of Boromir--it knew how good he was, and how to twist that goodness into temptation.

Sean Beans best death of all
Boromir was a true captain. Out of all men without destiny. Without a purpose. He resisted the ring at the very end. Living a life in fear of it from what his fathers desire for it. He chose to do what was right. To sacrifice his life as the true man of Gondor. But the journey doesn't end for him. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise. He's got many incredible capacities, he's a superb warrior, an inspiration for his men, courageous in the face of overwhelming odds and yet even this man was deranged by the magic of the ring. It truly reveals the lingering malicious presence of Sauron in the ring that such a titan of Gondor was bent to its will.

Maybe, but it is quite clear from the books that the ring's influence is most strong on people who are themselves powerful and ambitious. Boromir was everything we see in a classical hero and ambitious not for himself, but for his people. It doesn't mean it's a character flaw, it just means it is a characteristic of his character that made him more susceptible to the ring's influence.

Boromir is the best character in LOTR.
Why? Because Boromir is the personification of mankind as we are. We are not angelic creatures like elves, fantastical like dwarves, nor the long lived, blessed Dunedain. We as men are brave and strong at our best, but liable to temptation, doubt and jealousy. Boromir at his best is man as we should be, but even he fails. He falls to temptation, fails to protect the hobbits, just as we all fail God, ourselves, and those around us. But Boromir's story does not end in disgrace, but redemption. He confessed his sins before the end, and even in falling to temptation, returned to claim back his honor. Like St. Dismas, he shows that there is that greatness in penitence and redemption, that all our sins can be redeemed by word and deed. His is the story of men, and I think then he is the most human of all the characters and interesting in terms of development.
"I am a Christian," Tolkien wrote, "and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect 'history' to be anything but a 'long defeat' - though it contains (and in a legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory."
In Boromir no doubt, and in the fall of the Arnorian kingdoms and the slow decay of Gondor, Tolkien envisioned the same long defeat, and the necessary duty in the face of the fallen world to fight for what is Good and Just. Therein he articulated the same hopeless despair, loss and dogged persistence. And in Boromir, Gondor and the reunified kingdom, we get those same glimpses of God's final victory on earth, of heroic sacrifice and the victory brought by it.

Ironically that's why Gandalf chose Frodo to bear the ring. Only someone who didn't imagine how they could use it could've carried it so long. The natural leaders, people like Boromir, Aragorn, Gandalf, Elrond, Galadriel, Theoden, Saruman, Thranduil, Denethor... they all would have been, or were, tempted by the knowledge that with it, they could rise to power and with that power perhaps defeat Sauron and rule. And then shape the world as they wished to - who knows? What made Gandalf and Galadriel the best of them was the knowledge that even though they might wish to do good with the Ring, they would have ultimately been corrupted; and thus they did what Boromir could not do and refused it.

He was a good and strong man but the ring was cunning. It took his desire for strength and corrupted it so that it drove Boromir to try and take the ring by force. Still, it did not completely consume him. he recognized his failing and fought to protect those in front of him, not Frodo who he betrayed or even someone of importance(as of yet in the story), but two simple hobbits. Ultimately it was in vain. He died and Merry and Pippin were taken and yet he took back his honor. He redeemed his betrayal. He became once again a good man because redemption is not earned through accomplishments, but by intentions.

Imagine being Boromir, all life, campaigns against the forces of sauron, they were defending middle-earth long before all others were bothered to do so, and his father, a man of anbition that was resented because gondor had to deal with all that alone, Boromir grew up in that, so the fact that in the end he saw Aragorn as a man that he would follow, that he would even call him king (this would certainly be considered as treason by his father and he knew that) shows the presence and command that Aragorn imposed, every one here that had to work a lot to a boss that didn't give a shit can relate to that. He just knew right and then that it was the right thing, his brother Faramir did too, only their father never could. A terrible father of two great sons.

Boromir is literally my favorite character because he is the most relatable. The desire to protect your people, your family, no matter the cost. You would use any sort of power to do it, even if it meant using the one ring.

Boromir thought that the The One Ring was the last, pale light that still lingered in the West. In his final moments, he saw that it was really Aragorn, and died after swearing fealty to him.

He is perhaps the most controversial, but real human character in the book. I liked him a lot, but what Sean Bean did is : he made Boromir my favorite character in the movie. I literally cried when he died... And I love his character now!

The fellowship is a small adventure where each member gets a moment to sing the praises of their people. Gimli takes the lead in Moria (But it was dead). Legolas in Lorien (But it was dying). But despite all his pleadings, Boromir never had the opportunity to take the fellowship to his home in Gondor. By the end of the short-lived fellowship in Amon Hen we realize, that instead Boromir had brought Gondor with him. It's only fitting that the fellowship finally reunited in Gondor, the one place Boromir never had a chance to show. And unlike all the other locales, it was the one with the brightest prospects of the future. The dawn of the age of men.

Son of Gondor, a tale so grand,
    Boromir, noble, tragic man.
From common roots his dreams took flight,
Not for pride, but love’s pure light.
For Gondor’s sake, and brother dear,
He strove to banish every fear.
With Sword of Kings, his fingers bled,
By fate’s cruel hand his path was led.
A broken blade, a shattered dream,
He cast aside with silent scream.
Unworthy, thought he, to be king,
For fear he could not mend the ring.
The Ring of Power, he did crave,
For home and honor, he would brave.
    Yet Aragorn, the rightful heir,
    Denied him thus, deepening despair.
To Frodo, small, the burden fell,
The man fraught with fear, did swell.
    He felt the fellowship’s distrust,
Though he fought with might and just.
He could not see their hearts so true,
In their midst, a bond that grew.
Defending friends, he met his end,
By arrows struck, his shame to rend.
In dying breath, he saw at last,
The greatness in his life had passed.
Not in father’s will or crown,
But in the love of friends he had found.
A final act, a noble stand,
To safeguard all he held in hand.
A protector, kingly, in his way,
His sacrifice brought light to day.
Though death did claim him, veil so grim,
His deeds lived on, in hearts of kin.
Head so proud, his face so fair,
No strength left, for the son to share.

All Boromir's sufferings, patriotism, weakness, doubts, courage and leadership make him a tragic hero, one of the most human of the lord of the rings. It is sad to think that he could not see his sacrifices paid off at the end of everything, it would have been nice to see him alongside Aragorn, until the end. His titanic death does him more justice than any crown.
    Be at peace,Son of Gondor!
