    This GTO vid popped up and talk about memories. I was the original owner of a Gold 67, (no black vinyl top) with black interior, 400 ci.,350HP, 3:55 rear and Hurst Muncie 4sp. It was the love of my life. I put 9" wide American Mags and Wide Ovals on it. I spent about 4 hrs. with a hand grinder taking about an inch off those chrome fender well rings, so the tires would not rub. I also installed an Edelbrock aluminum intake, and Mallory distributer and coil. I also installed Dougs Headers. (Big mistake! I had to relocate the brake lines on the left side for clearance, and didn't gain that much HP over the factory exhaust. I had one of the rare engines with the slanted cast iron exhaust, which had individual runners). The mags, intake and headers did save about 200lbs. I raced around the Fresno, Bakersfield area 69-71. I never got beat by any Mustangs, or Chevelle's or Roadrunners, or ANY car with a 4 speed. Never lost to another GTO either. I did not have a tach. Hydraulic Lifters. When I popped the clutch in 1st gear, the speedometer needle would jump to 60 and the hood scoop would raise up about 4 inches. As I got traction, and the needle dropped to 45, I would hit 2nd gear, 3rd , then 4th at about 95 just before I crossed the line. I did lose to a friend, Larry D., who had a hopped up Dodge 440RT. He was turning in the low 12's. I almost lost to a Hemi Cuda, but the driver didn't know how to handle the power, and I hole shot him. I probably turned in the low 13's at 105. That Cuda must have been doing 120 when he caught me about 3 lengths after I crossed the line. Went by me like I was standing still! lol It was a CA car, so I had to deal with the smog pump, and CHP checks. I installed a chrome Muntz 4-8 track player under the AM radio, with two 6x9 speakers mounted over the trunk in the rear window cavity. Man that car would rock playing "Communication Breakdown" by Led Zepplin. I also took out the console, and installed a chrome ring and rubber boot. It was carpeted under the consol. I put a nice black pillow in-between the seats, and my girl would sit next to me with her arm around my neck while we cruised main with that shifter between her legs. I think she wore short skirts on purpose, to get a thrill every time I pulled the knob back to 2nd gear. Drove around with my hand on that white knob, between her legs for hours. You can't do that with any sports car you can buy today. It was a sad story how this great car ended. I made a mistake and slightly over revved it, and I thought I ruined the engine. Towing it to a local mechanic, I found out the timing gear had a wood fiber type center, and shredded. He installed a new gear, but a few months later the engine seemed to lose power and finally started using more and more oil.
    The guy who bought the car in 71, finally rebuilt the engine and told me what happened. The mechanic who changed the timing gear left the shredded timing gear fiber in the oil pan. It slowly plugged off the oil pump, lowering the oil pressure and ruining the engine.

    American car designers back in the day should be proud of the cars they put out. The current designers should be ashamed of the cars the put out now. No imagination of design for the most part.

      SO agree. I suppose it is less risky in the market place. We can be very glad that the greatest generation required more from their cars. Manufacturers wooed people with beautiful designs. Now they only appeal to conformity and nihilism.

    A lot of my friends were car peeps back in the late 70s. They not only had some real nice cars what I seen at Mecum car shows could have fetched $10s of thousands of dollars. Thing is they would get board after a few months and trade them , sell them to get a different muscle car. This GTO color reminds me of the one my neighbor had. Same year. Aside from the black vinyl top. It was a sweet.

    Factory 8 track! Never seen this before. Never did like hood tachs, although my favorite muscle car has one ('70 Rebel Machine). Love 'em in the dash.
    In my opinion, GTOs are the classiest and among the best looking of all muscle cars. Up to, and including the '73, that is.

    One other engine option that was not mentioned was the lower compression 400 with 255 hp/ 2 bbl. Compression on this engine was I believe 8.50:1 and took regular octane gas at the pump.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 лет назад

      Even the hotter 400 HO would run fine on leaded regular with 10.75:1 and will run fine on unleaded with a little timing pulled out. Strong engines, but in stock form they are prone to spinning bearings do to oil starvation, so flirt with red line at your own risk.

    • @dansmusic5749
      @dansmusic5749 5 лет назад

      @@GlassTopRX7 Interesting. Is there a cheap fix?

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 лет назад

      Cheap is a relative term but yes. Installing a rev limiter would be the cheapest method. The next option would be to upgrades to the oil pump and oil passages or a oil scavenging upgrade if it going to be run hard frequently.
      The fix wasn't widely known when I last worked one 35 years ago. So I'm not sure about the particulars.

Enjoyed it for a while and sold it around mid-summer '87. Never regretted selling it, though. Just needed the money for other things. I'll have another one day!

    Lou Costabile : It's not perfect. It doesn't have air conditioning. But I love it anyway. I'm not much of a Pontiac fan, but I have always loved the 1967 GTOs. There's just something about them. I'd love to have a 1967 Pontiac GTO. I live in northwest Florida. I would have to have air conditioning. Tell me if you think I would make a good marriage counselor. I once knew a man...this was either in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I never saw the car. Anyway, he told me he once had a 1967, all original, mint condition Pontiac GTO. Well, his wife hated the car and made him get rid of it. So just about as soon as he got rid of the car, she dumped him for another man. I told him, "You dumbass. You can always get another wife; but you can't always get another 1967 all original, mint condition Pontiac GTO." I'd make a good marriage counselor, wouldn't I?
