This is the best explanation and demonstration of this little mixer I've seen so far. Short, without unnecessary chatter, straight to the point. Many many thanks! Greetings from Austria!
Pat Stirling low key has some of the best DR content out there. Short and direct, useful and always high quality content. Respects the viewers time and always worth the watch. Keep up the awesome work buddy 👍
love this so much. recently got myself NanoKontrol as an audio deck to control music volume during streams but to know i can actively use this in Davinci as well?!!!!! Pat you’re a saint from above. keep up the content
Good stuff. Finally get to see you put this to use. Very cool! Yeah, sure, it lacks a few features, but for what I personally would need this is great! Good video, man!
This is a great introduction to a tool I may consider in the future -- farther along the learning journey. Thank you for also showing your process of discovery -- seeing experimenting and results in action is inspiring. I hope in the future, when you've been using it for awhile and had time to settle in with it, that you come back and do a follow up video. I'd like to know how it has (& hasn't?) lived up to your hopes, where you find yourself using it the most, etc.
To be able to mix like a mixer without setting key frames is generally easier and more intuitive. Editors didn’t start having to even mix anything until the late 90’s. I never output a final mix until about 2007. I’ve been editing for 40 years. I’d been retired for 12 years when I got dragged back to work.
Great, no nonsense guide. Been looking for a cheap alternate. As an indie doc maker, It'll be a long time before I can afford the Blackmagic panel (though I do have the speed editor), so I am going to purchase one of these.
Ohh that looks very handy! Definitely prefer physical faders over virtual/mouse controlled faders, I'll be looking at getting one.. I wonder if it's possible to get it working with OBS to control the audio mixer there?! And Patrick, thanks for your videos. They have helped me from scratch learn to use Davinci. One thing I've not gotten my head around is how to back up projects and media so if i lose my editing machine i can just reinstall DV and get all my projects, media, and the links in project to that media back!
Great video (and find) Patrick. Hardware control surfaces like this are great (I have the DR Speed Editor and love it), but usually expensive. The price point for this one is very impressive. I might have to go out and buy one soon! 😉
So after watching your video I giggled, then I got inspired, then I tried the same with my Tascam US2400 control surface. Welp, it worked! Oh and yes sending midi out will trigger moving faders excetera. Thanks for the inspiration, and idea to experiment. Next, when I have time I will try to expand the functionality using Bome or Auto Hot Key to program the most used hotkeys. Between your video and my daughter buying herself the Loupedeck CT to control DaVinci on her computer, I wanted to see how far I could push the envelope using what I have. I stopped at 6 tracks but it did work (following your instructions). My control suraface has 24 moving faders so we'll see how far I get before crash and burn. LOL
OH MY WORD I've been trying to figure out track fader automation in fairlight for AGES. I've just been stuck doing clip-based volume key framing and it's just not exactly what I wanted. Thank you SO MUCH for that unintentional tutorial
Pat, how do you manage workflow if/when you switch between projects you're working with? Take a pic of the fader settings so you can reset them when you return?
Also, I want Blackmagic to make a audio control surface for around $1,000. I don;t understand why they haven't done it yet. An AVID S1 equivalent would sell very well for them.
Dear Patrick, I bought one right away and it works perfectly. Now I have a question. If I were to connect a more extensive controller/mixer, would this also work in the same way? If you understand, Longer faders etc would be welcome
I have my nanoKontrol2 on 2x tablet/phone triangle holders so that it holds it up above my keyboard. (But I use it for OBS/system volume for streaming(class) control) (But I use a lot of other software to enable this, lol)
I was just thinking about compatibility to OBS - care to explain a little bit more about it? Did you have to fiddle much or was it easily "dockable" to OBS? (Edit some time later) And do you use it as a mixer or just to trigger things like scene change et al?
super helpful , thank you!!! I am struggling with one thing: I would like to control Busses and VCAs within the fairlight page with it. do you know if this is possible? whenever I scroll through the tracks to the busses, the controller will not get there :(
Hey Patrick! I got myself a NanoKontrol for €20! And it works great, except for the fact that resolve stops auto saving as soon as I touch the thing. It also won’t let me manually save a project anymore. Basically rendering the NanoKontrol useless. Have you experienced this? And maybe have a solution? 😅 I’m on DR 18.5, but I already had the issue on DR18
Great video, but the Korg short faders are a nightmare. Better spend some $ more and get a MCU/HUI compatible console with longer faders, also used one are great. However the Korg is great on the road, you can put in a bag the laptop the speed editor and the Korg.
Great tool! I really love Korg! I noticed that when you have muted tracks their color remains green instead of gray like in DR 16.2 (Studio and Free), is that normal or are you using customized settings?
Hi, MIDI stuff is ALWAYS interesting. Thank you, and looking forward for more relating to Resolve and as well curious about Windows MIDI control! Only one question: is it possible to assign specific midi hardware knob to a control in Fairlight or Davinci Resolve? In other words could I assign for example hardware fader 1 to Fairlight mixer fader 2? Thank you.
@@PatrickStirling Thats the thing, you really want to be able to control the buses not the individual tracks/channels. In a larger mix with lots of tracks they are all assigned to buses which are then adjusetd for volume in the final mix.

Dude, you are a legend. My Novation Launch Control XL has just taken on a new lease of life! All the best from London 👊🏾

I've still been using it a ton. for on the fly audio adjustments on a track level it's perfect

Well done, thanks for this, I'll come back to this once I get more familiar with Resolve. (beginner me is )
VERY INTERESTING!!!!! ... and ordered through your link to Amazon...

Your videos rock u don’t get enough credit! Prayin u come up quick
Very good explanation! Thank you very much!
When you're so excited you review it before figuring everything out about it... It's probably a good product.
Ohh that looks very handy!

That's pretty rad.

haha. I probably should do a standalone video on that... it's not the most apparent thing
I HATE mixing with a mouse! This is just the thing I've been thinking about. Thank you!
I'd definitely be interested to see how you can use something like this elsewhere in windows!
You´re awesome bro! TY Greets from Chile.
Very interesting!
Will you do a more detailed video about it in the future?
Excellent. Aaaaaand now I own one. Love the content. I'm curious if we can use it in Fusion for animation control of key frames....
Pat, how do you manage workflow if/when you switch between projects you're working with? Take a pic of the fader settings so you can reset them when you return?
Yeah - better buy motorized faders. They should work with Resolve since it sends data back to controller.
Not sure what use I would have for it but I kinda want one now to play with
It is very fun to play with 😅
I've always wondered how to connect a midi to different programs like OBS. Please do it! That would be sick.
interesting video, found your channel while searching for something to mix with in fairlight.

oh awesome. I really want to check out some of those other ways to use it when Resolve isn't open. any recommendations?

Is there a way to map this panel to color grade in DaVinci?
What happens when you make a mistake during mixing and you wanna do part of it again? Asking as the faders aren't motorized...
Where you able to control plugins with this device?
This is very interesting. A couple of Qs - Is this DR17Studio compatible? And are you using a Mac or Windows system? Thanks for the video.
Yes it's compatible with studio and I'm using windows 👍
Are there any VSTs you use in fairlight? Any you'd recommend? Especially budget options, thanks 😁
I have some izotope rx7 that I was able to get on a pretty good sale a while ago. I would love to dive into VSTs a bit more
The iZotope RX suite is absolutely a must. If you need general use audio tools I would recommend FabFilter vst's.
I use LoudMax - a great “brick wall” limiter - on my master audio bus. I come from the DAW world, and it’s a handy tool for keeping my audio in check.
Thank you.
For the price, thats hard to beat. Desk space might be an issue for me though.
I wonder if it could work for obs?

Did the hardware age well?
Yup! Just used it today!

This is where CSI for Reaper is the killer app!
Love uuuuuu! 🤩
MIDI Translator Pro works great also.
Oooh I'll totally check that out. 👍🏻
Have you found a way to map a fader to a bus fader in the Fairlight page?
ooh I haven't specifically tried that...

Hi Patrick, did you find/ try any other Budget Control Surface since this video on NanKontroler??
I haven't, but I'd love to check out more!
WOW!
yes gimme more
i just find this machine cant work well when the track over 8
