Kevin Ross, my guy. I have watched all your videos regarding the M1 MacBook's/Mac mini. you've helped me out big time. thanks to you I got a promotion on my work and some business oppertunities choosing my MacBook Pro 13 inch 16gb RAM and 512gb of storage. You're videos are totally different than from the tech community and just exact the factor that made me buy this machine with a comfortable heart. it came in yesterday by mail, after waiting with a lot of hype for this new machine. I've set it up and Is now 1 day old. I can't tell you enough how happy I am and how grateful I am towards your videos. you're truly amazing. you have earned yourself a new sub and my upmost respect. Thank you Kevin for bringing worth with your video's. Greetings Collin Dunlop
Well Collin, I have to say my friend. I'm not sure what it was exactly that I said, but I'm glad that I was able to be of service in some way. I appreciate your time on the channel, and certainly appreciate your comment. And, whatever the work and business opportunities are, I'm sending my best to those endeavors and wishing you continued success. I look forward to seeing you around the channel and I hope to provide more value that the community can take action on. Until the next video, be well, friend. 🤘👊
FANTASTIC!! - Been researching monitors all afternoon and you have been helping me tremendously replying to my comment (on another video) -- I just truly wanted to Thank you. Subscriber for Life and a Big Time Fan -- Thank you
Sure thing. And as far as the television, from the other comment, that text will be pretty blurry. For the price, and wanting some reasonable nits, and the aspect ratio, let me think for a sec because I don’t have a slam dunk option that I’m thinking about. Dell makes some really nice ultrawides, and that might be a direction. I have to find the model number because there’s one that many have often stated that it worked with their Macs. Let me dive in on that.
Kevin! Bought that ViewSonic VP3481 Monitor back in December after watching a couple videos of you talking about it. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. Getting 60Hz refresh rate on my current mac all day. Amazing.
Thank you for the video, excellent research! I want to create a two monitors setup, preferably 120hz (144 more likely), with one of the monitors being 4k, or just two of them being 2k and 144hz with hdr, that requires me having two DP monitors, and I cant find thunderbolt hubs that can do that. Because usually it’s an hmdi and a dp, but not like two dp. I mostly do design work, photos, videos as well, so colors are important to me, and the high frequency is important more for a comfort, not games. It’s a research mess for me right now, in other words, as I am planning to work on the yet unreleased macbook pro 16” (M2 or M1X, whatever it will come with). And I would like to “dock” it, have access to all my peripherals, two monitors, and unplug it if I need to. Having to connect multiple cables makes me anxious. Sorry if my comment is a mess, I’ve been thinking about it for a week, making a ton of research on monitors, on docs, on M1 connectivity.. d’uh Maybe you can help me understand if I need to go 4k (more future proof but no high refresh rate). Hdr is also important for future hdr content creation. My budget is $500 for each monitor max (I live in Russia and we have inflated prices, so $500 turns into $1000 equivalent). Maybe someone will help me 😅 Cheers and have a great day to anyone who read this far
You're gonna make it big one day. Great content, just keep putting in the time and people will eventually find you. The M1 info brought me here, and I found myself watching more and more videos because of the high quality videos!
I have a Macbook Air M1, I just want a basic 4k monitor set up. What would you suggest for a base model hub and TV? Am i better looking for a USB-C compatible monitor or a display port functionality? Keep up the good work I'm not a creator so don't need top spec features 👍🏻
Well for the money, this monitor is hard to beat, and it works great with the M1 ruclips.net/video/s-BaU7DKpqw/видео.html No that you need to watch another video, but I did test it and I’m using daily.
Hi Kevin, I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Air M1 and a 4K 60Hz HDR monitor. My question is, will that combination work? Will I get 4K@60hz and HDR on the monitor? If so, what cable is required? Does the monitor need to have thunderbolt 3 input or would a usb-c to DisplayPort cable do the the job? Hope that makes sense, thanks! Love the videos btw!
As long as the monitor has 60Hz, then you should be just fine as long as the cable your using is fast enough. There are some linked below. The MBA can also push at a higher refresh rate on a 1080p monitor. I actually did a test and video on that. USB-C to DisplayPort would be my next in line recommendation if you don’t have a USB-C compatible monitor. Double check that the monitor plays well with a Mac. There are some linked below, but when you settle on one just double check because every monitor has its hang ups.
Hey Kevin, great videos!.. I just bought a 32" inch 2k viewsonic monitor and paired it with a MacBook pro m1, the UI and videos are great.. but the text is blurry and crooked. I checked the internet and it was full of complaints. Wonder if you faced the same or if you have any solution for this.
Are there particular complaints on that specific monitor? I haven’t had issues with my viewsonic and I definitely use it all the time for typing up notes. Have you tried to into any of the onboard monitor settings yet?
@@KevinRossRN same complaints with various models and brands.. well i,ve tried to increase sharpness of monitor OSD, and also via terminal commands.. now its much better, but still theres a level of blur and jittery edges one could feel.
I have been having the exact same issue and I saw on the Apple forum that a bunch of people are are complaining about blurry text on an external monitor, no matter how high res their monitor or or what their setting might be on. I have a Samsung G35T Gaming Monitor with 144Hz Refresh Rate - 27 Inch and bought the new MacBook Pro 14” with the M1 Chip, and I’ve tried multiple HDMI and DisplayPort cables, tried testing all the different display settings and my text is so pixelated / blurry. It a massive issue because I’m a UI Designer, I need to design pixel perfect. Please lemme know there is any update or fix for this?
Excellent video! I am having problems with my MacBook Pro m1. I have a Samsung monitor (Model F24T35) IPS, FHD, 75hz. Connected via HDMI to USB-C 4K cable (Satechi ST-CHDMIM model) The problem is that you see a poor quality image, the letters look pixelated and it tires your eyes. I tested the monitor on my girlfriend's Windows notebook and the monitor really looked great and was easy on the eyes. Could you help me? Thanks a lot!
So, MacOS has been known to treat certain monitors as a TV. Apple used to have font smoothing built into the system preferences, but with Big Sur we lost that easy access. Go to terminal from the applications folder. Open it up and type: defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 1 enables light, 2 is medium and 3 is strong smoothing, so you can replace the number with how much smoothing you want. To disable it you can replace the number with a 0 (zero) You’ll restart your computer after you type the command. Feel free to look it up if you want to double check it before trying it. Just search for font smoothing in Big Sur.
So not having this monitor myself, have been able to dig into the monitor settings a bit more to find a setting that works? Are there an RGB modes in there?
@@KevinRossRN That's right, I was touching the internal settings of the monitor and I was able to make some slight improvements, but the letters are still pixelated and it continues to tire the eyes. It has no RGB modes.
Just discovered your channel, great video thanks! I'm going to be using my 2016 MacBook Pro until I get the M1 Mini later this year, am looking for a monitor ~ I was considering the Dell U2719D for budget reasons, but if the difference is that great I could probably go some extra in my budget; am also considering the Dell Ultrasharp U2720Q; Will be doing photography, video editing, concerned about connectivity and ease of use; what would you recommend? Thanks much!
If you’re going with the Dell, then I’d say on the photography side, if you can swing it, then the 2720Q will likely serve you better. Not to mention it’s USB-C and 4K IPS. Just my two cents.
Hey man, I know you are amazing at helping us in the comments, so I'm glad I found this video of yours. I'm running a crg9 and it seems like the quality is not the best using a Cable Matters USB C to Displayport adapter. Running at 5120x1440 120hz. Colors look washed out, text looks a bit pixelated. I'm running the 16" 2021 MBP with M1 Pro
Great content 👍 would you consider a matt screen monitor? I'm just starting out looking for a decent all round monitor and it's quite a lot of work sifting through the many veriations and brands. I was told VA monitors are yesterday's tech and to avoid them, so companies still push them however..
I personally don’t like a matte screen because I’m really looking for those colors to “pop” when I’m editing, but also be close to what you’d actually see. MVA panels are pretty common, especially with the curved displays because they’re most cost effective to manufacture. What size are you looking for? I did a review on this display: The External Display That Actually Works With the M1 Max MacBook Pro ruclips.net/video/s-BaU7DKpqw/видео.html I use it daily. For the price, it’s been hard to beat. But there are also some other options out there depending on what you need.
@@KevinRossRN I'm looking for a 32' monitor - matte screens don't give me headaches and as long as the screen isn't too washed out, I don't mind the slight haze matte screens give off. The Samsung M8 looks ok, but reviews are very undecided. Thanks for the quick reply - I'm also living in NZ where everything is at least 2 x price as it is in the US... I'll check the link you provided 👍
I have a creator friend, Alex Gear and Tech who currently has that monitor. He may be able to weigh in on what he thinks of it. He’s also responsive in his comments section.
More great content ! I followed your advice on the ext SSD. So are you saying that buying a monitor with anything faster than 60hz can’t be used ? I’m mainly into web browsing , productivity , and occasional gorpro editing. Looking for a mid range monitor that is at least QHD, 31.5 or maybee a little bit smaller , able to open 2 x xls side by side and maybee play the odd game (been saying that for years and haven’t ) Also , if it had ports so I didn’t need to buy a hub ? Would love a USB C and A regular USB 3 Any thoughts ?
Thanks! And funny you should as about the refresh rate. I’m literally (not kidding) in the middle of testing a gaming monitor that has a higher refresh rate. I’ve already filmed it and just need to cut it and upload. Short answer, it’s not a 4K display, however it will run at a higher refresh rate. The monitors in the description however are setups that I recommend and monitors that others have purchased and reported back as having a good experience with. But some monitors will go higher on that refresh. It just depends, but minimum you should be getting 60.
Thank you for all the information you provided in your video. Just a Question. What is your thought on the LG 49" 49WL95C-W Vs LG 27" Ergo 27UN880-B Monitor for photography and video editing? I was planing to buy 2 27" or 1 49" to use with the M1 Mac Mini.
thanks for the informative video. I have always like the Mac Mini. I read some people having resolution issues with the M1 Mac Mini and ultra wide (super ultra-wide) monitors. Is that true? I currently have a Dell 49" super ultra-wide monitor whose resolution is 5120x1440. Could the M1 Mac Mini handle that resolution? I heard the previous models could but you would need to get an eGPU to do that.
If the MacBook Air can drive a 55” 4K television, then an ultra wide for the mini should work, however there may be issues with the cables. It’s possible. Using a passive USB-C cable vs using an active one. Also, a monitor should come with a high speed HDMI cable if it supports that HDR and higher refresh rate, but this may also be the case that the supplied cable isn’t sufficient. This is a hypothesis of course.
Quite informative video. Do you think the Dell S3220DGF 32" curved monitor will work well with mac mini M1? I have two of these monitors I use with a Dell laptop. I was considering upgrading to a mac mini (from 2009 iMac) and using these monitors for both computers. The monitors have 2 x HDMI (2.0) and 1 x DP (1.2) ports. Thanks.
These should work. Sometimes MacOS and Dell Monitors have been hit or miss…I’d have to research these specifically for you on this particular model, but having the DP and HDMI connections is certainly in the right track. Sometimes the aspect ratio gets a little thrown off if there aren’t on screen display controls. I’m not in a spot at the moment to research that particular one.

Thanks for the helpful info! I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro and I can’t for the life of me get the USB-C connection to display and output power from my LG monitor, which is a LG 32UN880-B 32" UltraFine 4K UHD Display. Have you used this monitor before, or do you have advice as to which cable I should use? I’ve tried a Thunderbolt 3 and 4, as well as the included cable with the monitor and nothing seems to work. Beginning to question whether I have a defective USB C port on my MacBook
Now when you say output power, you’re just referring to being able to push a signal to the display, correct? And, do you have another computer to test that the display works?
@@KevinRossRN yes, that’s what I’m referring to. LG markets it as the one cable solution, claiming that it can display and charge your laptop. I just haven’t been able to get it to work and have tried so many cables
@@KevinRossRN HDMI out does work, and that’s what I’ve been using, but I was really hoping the one cable solution thing would’ve been true for my use case
Nice review Kevin. I've been wondering if I can use my old CRT with macmini m1 as secondary display (can't trash my childhood buddy). So can hdmi to vga cable do the magic? Also, do you experience any bluetooth connectivity issues with keyboard and mouse ?
Thanks! So I didn’t try an old CRT monitor, but I did try a monitor that still has a VGA connection. It would be a USB-C to VGA. This is the exact one that I’ve used: amzn.to/3wG78oR And as far as the BT issues, I did use a wired keyboard on initial set up.
It’s actually a USB-C cable if you have that option with the monitor you choose. It’ll either be the one that comes with the monitor, or I’m actually using this one on my 14 inch MBP: amzn.to/31vn2sf Otherwise if you don’t have USB-C to USB-C then the usb- c to display port is this one: amzn.to/3Dl9iNK
Great content Kevin! I have the Macbook Air M1 and have been looking into the 49" UltraWide Monitors and it seems that it can push the resolution, and it's only able to have 1 additional monitor... so I think the 49" monitors are kind of considered 2 monitors. I'll be using the monitor mainly for business and productivity, very light editing video/images. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe I don't need the 49" and could get away with using a 34"... On the 34" View Sonic... with a MacBook Air M1... when you're doing split screen, and you click to open an app on one side full screen, does it open full screen within that side of the monitor or does it overtake the entire full screen? Appreciate it Kevin!
Thanks! Yeah that 49 inch is a lot of real estate and it should push it just fine. As far as the split screen, no, the app or program doesn’t typically take up the whole screen and usually opens up as a partial screen. So let’s say I’m working with a doc on the right and Photoshop on the left. I would manually size those to how I’d want them and then let’s say I minimize that window...and then bring it back up. It’ll be in that same spot that I placed it. The ultrawides do have split screen capabilities, but with MacOS I’ve had to rely on the built in (software) functionality vs what the screen is capable of...not sure if that answers the question. But simply, I do work in multiple apps and have those placed where I want them and toggle between them as I need to.
@@KevinRossRN cool, thanks for that info. I've watched a bunch of YT vids about the 49" monitors with the Macbook Air M1's and people are having issues with getting the resolution that the monitor can push.. but looking at the ViewSonic 34" that you have, might be a good enough option for me to multitask :)
I personally like the USB-C version because it then turns into a hub with the rest of the connections in the back. The next one I’d recommend is DisplayPort, so the USB-C to DisplayPort, and then HDMI. You’d only get that hub functionality with the USB-C connection though.
Hi, Kevin! Very nice video. have the Mac Mini with the M1 2020 chip. I have bought 2 32" QHD 75 Hz Lenovo monitors. The monitor only comes (not received yet) as I see in the reviews with only an HDMI cable. The monitor has 1 DP 1.2 port and 1 HDMI 1.4 port. No idea if the cable that comes with the monitor will work fine with the M! Mac (HDMI to HDMI) and about the other I suppose it must be from Thunderbolt to DP cable. What cable do you recommend? Do you think I will be able to run both at 60Hz? Because 75 Hz is not possible or there is any way to run both at 65Hz? Hope you can guide me a little bit about how to connect them to the Mac M1. Your guide will be very appreciated.
I’ve run two monitors at 60Hz with no problems. For the other monitor, you are correct in either running a USB-C to HDMI or a USB-C to DP cable. I’d try the display port cable to see what you think. The USB-C to DP in the description is the one I still use today.
I see. I just know that it’s on sale in the US (it says 29% off) and that the price is 16.99USD, but and it’s the UNI brand, which I trust with all of my peripherals, but haven’t seen the price in Spain. If you’re concerned about price, did you find a less expensive alternative?
I’m in the market for a 34-38 inch Ultrawide. I’d mostly be using it for coding on my MacBook Air M1. Would the Dell U3821DW or even the U3421WE be a good choice?
All this is blowing over my head!! Can someone please suggest which ultra-wide screen with good display for a MacBook Air m1. And what cables I need for it. Thanks 🙏
Wondering if you know of a way to connect an old 23" Apple Cinema Display (dvi version) to a new 2021 MacBookPro with Thunderbolt 4? I still love the old matte displays and it would be great to be able to keep using this monitor with my new MacBookPro if I could! Thanks for any input!
I have an adapter like this one for an older display. amzn.to/3CYn8Wj I don’t have the Apple Cinema Display, but it is a monitor with DVI. I believe you can also get one that connects via HDMI
thanks for this. looking for an external monitor for my 2020 m1 pro and wasnt sure what kind of display to get for color accuracy for photo editing and video color correcting and this helped
I sure wish we had the chef’s kiss emoji. So many times I’ve wanted to use it. I really appreciate your time and I certainly look forward to having you around.
Just wanted to tell you how much I love all your videos. Also I got a CalDigit TS3 Plus after watching some of your videos and looking at all the products. This is the best thing I ever did for my current 13" Macbook Pro and I look forward to using it on a new M1 Macbook Pro hopefully sometime later this year :-)
That’s awesome you picked up the Caldigit, and really glad it’s working out. I should have a review/update video on these hubs/docks, but not to worry, the Caldigit is still a top pick and one of the best out there. Appreciate having you around here friend.
Hi Kevin. Again a very informative video! I will get my m1 mac mini end of next week. I will have a new samsung 4K ips monitor wich has hdr and 60 hertz. My question is: is it better to connect the monitor with a 2.0 hdmi to the mini or should i use a hdmi to display Port cable? My usb-c ports at the mini will be connected to external ssds. Greetz Bjoern
So I'm testing this exact HDMI to DP cable: amzn.to/2XwKWxT (for reference) It's not going well so far. I think this may be better for consoles, but I'm still testing.
@@KevinRossRN really want 4K and 60Hz. is the quality better with mini/hdmi to monitor hdmi , or mini/hdmi to monitor diplay port? my monitor doesn’t have usbc. what is here the better choice for best quality if I use the usbc out on the mini: to the hdmi or to the display port at the monitor? I alsow ordered a 2TB samsung T7 to do video editing. But at first I need to transfer some datas from my old windows pc to the mini with the T7. What is the best formation type for the SSD to be able to communicate with both, windows and Mac OS, with no limitation in file size? After I have done this copying/transfer, is it better to make a new formation on the SSD in the apple format? Will the SSD work better in apple format or does the formation of a SSD not affect the write/read speed? Sorry for asking so much 🙈
So if you don’t have USB-C monitor, then I’d prioritize USB-C (connected to the TB port) and then DisplayPort to the monitor if you can. The HDMI to DP (for me) isn’t working correctly. I’m still testing it. But if you need that TB3 port to be open then just go with the HDMI to HDMI. As far as the file format you can go exFAT between the two, and then once you’re exclusive MacOS then I’d switch to APFS as it should give you faster read/write...theoretically.
@@KevinRossRN kay. Thanx 4 ya help! Just read that the DP on the monitor is version 1.2 So i need a hdmi - DP 1.2 cable to get 4K 60HZ right? Think i give the hdmi-hdmi a try at first. The specs of the mini say: hdmi is up to 4K 60HZ...
Thanks for the detailed video! I'm having some problem connecting my M1 Macbook Air to my Prism+ W270 Pro monitor. The signal between the two devices keep flickering and nothing shows up on the monitor, is it a compatability issue? Would really appreciate if you could give me some tips!
Hey Kevin. Just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks! We exchanged comments on a different video and you helped me decide to trade in my MBP16 for the new M1 MBA and my '18 iPad Pro for M1 Mac Mini. No regrets! Loving both and loving your videos. Keep up the great work. Thanks!
Hi Kevin, Thanks for your great review. I ordered a mac mini 16gb 1tb. And now i want to order a monitor for it. I find a benq EW2780u. But reading that reviews a see a lot of problems with 30/60hertz. What is your opinion about this problem? Could this be the cable do you think it's the monitor? Because i like it so much. But if they don't match not a good idea to buy it...
Well now that is concerning. I have a BenQ monitor, the GW2480...it's not 4K, but does have 60Hz capability. So I just tested it with my M1 MBA, and I can confirm 60Hz for both USB-C to DisplayPort and HDMI running through the HooToo hub that I have. My kid uses it as a gaming monitor, so that's why I didn't test it before, but if I could upload a screen shot here I would. Now, I certainly can't speak specifically to the monitor you're interested in, but I do see where others are struggling. Do you have your eye on any others?
Hey Kevin! Have you had any issues with the external monitor losing signal? My display would randomly discount here and there and I heard a lot of other people are having the same issue. I was wondering if it the adapters or HDMI, have you seen any issue come up while you were testing out these accessories?
Hi Kevin! Thank you for replying back to me. I am currently using a Samsung 32 in 4k curve monitor. I am pretty sure it's not the monitor and might be my MacBook instead. Have you tested your monitor with an Apple air M1? @@KevinRossRN
Yes, I have the MBA as well as the mini and the M1 Max MBP. I’ve used them all with external displays. I will say that MacOS can definitely cause some issues. Sometimes display link (free download) can help resolve some of these, but I e heard that for some, their monitors were working great, then they ended up with a software update and it became unstable until they received another software update. Did you transition over to Monterey?
@@KevinRossRN display link? What is that? I think it’s a software issue as well, but apple is telling me to bring it in, but I doubt they’re going to be able replicate the issue because it doesn’t happen right away, it happens randomly. So I just recently brought a monitor so I been using the newest iOS. Thanks again Kevin! Really appreciate the advice.
Hi Kevin, I recently purchased an M1 Mac Mini. I'm looking to purchase a 4k monitor. Wondering if you have any suggestions? I am a Graphic Designer. I am also teaching myself After Effects. My budget for the monitor is under $600. Thank you for making great & helpful videos.
Thanks! Have you been looking at a particular line of monitors? For the budget, quite a few have considered this one: amzn.to/3c5GK0W BenQ also makes some decent IPS panels for design, but they do bump in price.
Thanks for all these infos! Is usb-c to usb-c the preferred connection (it definitely is the most convenient when using a laptop)? Did you also test a 49“ monitor like the dell u4919?
Hello, a very basic question here. Which is better - M1 Mac Mini or M1 Macbook Pro? When it comes to connecting an external display for video editing work. i am planning to upgrade to the latest gen M1 Macbook Pro soon (or the M1X). But before i make the purchase, would like to know if having a Mac mini is better than Macbook just because an external display is involved. Thanks for your suggestion!!!
Well are interested in having portability at all? I’d say if you need to be mobile than the Mac Mini although small and portable, wouldn’t necessarily give you that functionality. And the M1X will likely bring more external display capabilities because on the current iteration you can connect 1 display (two with the Mac Mini), however the next update should allow for more displays. Personally though, if you don’t need to be mobile, the mini is a screaming deal.
@@KevinRossRN I own a pretty old 2012 chunky Macbook pro. So, planning to upgrade that to a latest one (i know this will be a massive jump, M1 or M1X). This being my only personal workstation of any kind, portability is a priority for me obviously. Coming to M1 Mini, it is made to be a desktop machine. So my understanding is that it must work seamlessly with external displays and all. The video editing job, of medium to high intensity, that i will be doing should be more smoother with a desktop M1, i believe. But i don’t know if the same can be said about Macbook as it is primarily meant for ease of use and portability. Also, I don’t know if there would be a performance lag with the Macbook, particularly when work is routed to an external display with a laptop hardware, though it is an M1. Please correct me if wrong! If there is indeed a performance hit with M1 Macbook when compared to M1 Mini, i would better continue with my old 2012 Macbook for everyday activities and better buy a Mac Mini for the video workflows. And, I would need to upgrade my external display to a 4K or a higher one anyway, be it Mini or Macbook. Hope this gives you a better idea about my need. Appreciate your thoughts. Thank you so much for your reply!!!!
So the performance differences are really the thermal throttling on the MacBook Air vs the mini because of the fan (or lack there of). The processors are the same. The M1 will be a massive jump up from your 2012. The M1X jump will be even bigger. If you’re already thinking about docking it, and getting another monitor, then it sounds like the mini would be a better value. Although, I certainly don’t discount the convenience of editing somewhere else in your home, like on the sofa or elsewhere, so portability is also nice even if it’s just a few steps away from your desk. I’d say if you can hold on for a couple more weeks, we’re going to know something soon on these M1X machines, but they will come at a price bump.
@@KevinRossRN I will keep that little conveniences of portability in mind for sure. Honestly i did not give much thought about that. Thank you!! And, Sure, if M1X is going to be here anytime soon, i will definitely go for that. I am not a frequent upgrader that you could see from my 9 year old laptop, lol. So having the latest is no harm and price bump will be okay. Thank you for taking your time to respond. You have a regular visitor to your channel. Subbed!!
Hi there, how fast did the battery life drain for M1 Macbook Air without charging when connected to external monitor? Is there any difference using the USB C Hub vs "USB-C to Display Port cable"? (I tried the USB C Hub with my M1 Mac Air and it drains really quickly compared to my windows laptop.. )
Well do keep in mind that anything you plug into the MBA will want some of that resource, even a hub. I personally go direct when I can and if I have a hub plugged in I just keep it separate from the display. So the MBA is obviously going to be pushing that display and so that takes resource, add a hub to that and then you’re putting a bit more on that battery because the board in that hub is transferring that signal. Now my use case may be different than yours. I’m editing video and photos most of the day and transferring large files along with having about 4 different browsers with 30+ tabs open on each browser, so I’m definitely placing more demands on the system.
Very informative and helpful. Thinking of getting a 34inch instead of 27inch 4k, an all around monitor for photo/video editing and maybe some games. Also getiing my first Mac m1 computer, still torned if i should get the MBA or MBP or maybe just the mini.. lol i want a computer to have on my desk aswell as i can take it with me everywhere.
So the MBP would offer some benefit if you’re gaming and really not because of the chipset, because they’re all the same, but for the thermal management for an intensive task.
@@KevinRossRN not very low budget or very hi, something be good for MacBook Air and PS4 not too big not too small. It’s for my son actually.I have Bose Companion . Thanks
Ah not sure which companion model you have, but on a similar note have you seen these from Edifier? amzn.to/38pTmwQ They’re going to be a bit “brighter” than something like the companion. Now working your way up there’s always the Audioengine A2 series, which is pretty popular on desk setups and I think they sound pretty decent. I like the Kanto YU2 speakers, but those are not Bluetooth and you’d have to move up to YU4, and then you’re starting to move up in price. Kanto’s customer service seems to be on point because I’ve chatted with them a couple of times on a question I had and they responded pretty quickly.
Hey kevin i have a question bout LG UL500-W 27 inch UHD monitor, is this monitor good for connecting macbook pro and ps5? Please let me know what you think. Thank you!
It’s rated to work with the M1 if that’s what you’re asking. I also reviewed this monitor: ruclips.net/video/s-BaU7DKpqw/видео.html And it’s in the same price range and I haven’t had a single issue this far.
@@KevinRossRN so LG monitor does work with macbook pro right? With that do you think it will work with ps5 too if you knowledge bout that? I reviewed your video and i like that monitor now if this works better with macbook pro and for gaming like ps5 do u think this one worth more to buy?
Hi Kevin, a couple of months ago I swapped out my 2017 5k imac in preference for the 13 inch MBP M1 for better speed of photo and video editing. I had a 5k LG 27inch monitor (sold by Apple) connected through the thunderbolt connection. Working with it though didnt seem to be any quicker than the Imac. A couple of Sunday's ago I uncoupled the MBP from my desk and worked with it on my lap and wow it was super fast. I did lots of tests and the thing that kept coming up as the result was that the 5k monitor seemed to strangling / throttling back the capability of the MBP. I coupled it to an LG 4k 24 inch monitor and it worked a lot quicker. Luckily Apple took the 5k monitor back and gave a full refund. Have you had any experience of a monitor slowing an M1 MBP down and if so is there a work around? Both the 24 and 27 inch monitors were connected via TB3 - best wishes Nick
Hey Nick. That is definitely the first I’ve heard about it here. What I will say is that I’ve definitely talked to quite a few folks that have been cruising along, while a small handful have had the typical “monitor” issues. However I did see some threads a while back about this monitor slowing down MBPs ...this was even before the M1. I’d have to dig deeper on this specific issue as some were complaining about the particular chip (Intel) being underpowered, while others reset the VRAM. But what I will say is that my MBA runs the same whether on a monitor or not. This seems isolated to this particular monitor. I suppose you wouldn’t have another monitor lying around to test?
Hi Kevin, i have the 24 inch LG 4k (the 27inch 5k's smaller brother) and the 13 inch M1 MPB works much better on that. I will say though that in all my trials and testing of the 27 inch and the 24 inch and just the laptop, it did seem to be quickest when nothing else was plugged in. Ive looked on forums and others seem to be having slowing down issues with some monitors. The 24 inch monitor is very sharp so perhaps i'll stick with this for now. I was on the phone for a good couple of hours with the tech team from apple and eventually they agreed that it was the 5k 27 inch LG that was the culprit. I was gutted as this monitor is amazing.
I feel you on feeling gutted about that monitor my friend. It’s really hard to find a display that is comparable to the iMac. I’m glad you were able to get the return. As I mentioned in another video, the Thunderbolt controller/retimer in the M1and what seems to be helping some workflows is a powered hub, but no guarantee that this would help with this particular display. Not to mention as great as these machines are, needing a hub shouldn’t be the solution. I’m hoping the engineers are taking notes here because I’ve come across a few forums where users are at least reporting these issues and I can’t imagine this is only (if it all) software related, but rather the power output on these chips. Heartbreaking on that display though.
Thanks. As far as the temp, I’d you’re concerned about throttling, it’s fine because it’s not really working hard to drive that display. I’ve even run the Display through the M1 iPad Pro and it’s also fine, even when editing complex footage.
I just got my mac mini m1 8gb yesterday and I'm using a Dell 27in 4K monitor. The ghosting is really bad. Been troubleshooting this non-stop and can't seem to find a fix. Do you guys have a similar issue?
I have Mac mini m1 and the MacBook Air m1...external monitor connected to the Mac mini, how can I ALSO connect my MacBook Air to the Mac mini to use as a 2nd monitor. I want to color grade (or at least check color) on my Air. Thanks man!
So, not necessarily a “quick and easy” solution. But this article can illuminate some of the limitations. It used to be that we could use target display mode with old iMacs, but these chipsets are requiring a bit more of a workaround that includes a combo of hardware and software. www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/how-connect-two-or-more-external-displays-apple-silicon-m1-mac-3799794/
@@KevinRossRN I actually got it figured out.. but thank you! Using screen share, works like a charm. Not sure why my BenQ is so far off from my MacBook as far as color but at least now I have something as a reference instead of my phone. Maybe you know and can do a video? I know color profiles is a big confusing topic
Yeah, monitors drive me bonkers. I just focus on the scopes and call it a day. But glad you got it to work. That side car and air display/screen share gets a little buggy at times. Sometimes it’ll connect right away while other times it’s not an option. 🤷♂️
@@KevinRossRN gotcha.. yea I need to learn How to read color scopes better.. the exposure is cool but color sucks! My screen share seems to be on point so far.
Awesome that the screen share is working. Glad that part was easy. Heck I’m still working on figuring out scopes. Just practice, but it’s also about the look you want as well. As long as I can get the skin tones dialed in, then I feel comfortable experimenting with the rest of the colors as long as they’re not wildly shifted.
If I connect a monitor using USB-C will it also transfer data to any USB ports on the monitor. I would think so but wanted to check. I can then connect any external USB devices to the screen and just have one cable to the MacBook Air M1. Cheers
That's how my monitor is set up. So USB-C into the TB3 port, then I have a hub connected into the back of the monitor where I have my SD card reader and my audio interface, so typically, yes that should be the case when connected via USB-C.
It’ll really depend on the monitor and the cable you’re using. It’s possible, but the limitation is unfortunately due to MacOS, but with certain monitors it can be possible.
Thanks my man. Yes, interesting findings indeed. I have to continue to test with gaming settings just to see what that looks like. I’m in a rabbit hole of testing, it seems 😀
@@KevinRossRN Haha yeah man, funny thing is I tried all the picture profiles on my monitor before but just kept it in on the factory default. Now watching your video I decided to switch it to HDR. 😂😁👍
Yeah, it really comes down to experimentation. I was finding that the HDR setting in the monitor was the closest to how the colors showed up on my RUclips videos. It’s going to vary for everyone, but if folks are willing to spend a little time testing, they’ll definitely learn their monitor, but then it gets quicker every time they need to make a change. I have a different setting for editing photos. 🤷♂️
Yeah, I tend to watch my video (before posting) on my screen, an Android device and then iPhone. Let’s just say they all have their own “look” which makes it very interesting for editing. I just rely more on my scopes, but still like to check it on those devices before publish.
I’ve found that USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to DisplayPort to be the best. If you need a hub because you need more connectivity, then I’d run a USB-C out of that if possible.
Yeah a hub is typically “sipping” more power as the Thunderbolt port needs to supply power to that hub. However it sounds like you’re using the hub unplugged. I assume?
Hey Kevin. Have you experienced the issue where volume controls on an external monitor (I have a Dell Ultrawide U3412WE) are disabled by Apple (I’m trying to connect a mbp 13” m1, my kids chrome book and pc laptop work seamlessly)? I see some chatter online but the apps people are suggesting have retired or are rather homebrew in presentation. I’ve read it’s a driver issue but Apple says it a Dell issue and Dell, well, you probably know the rest of this song. Any insight you have would be so appreciated.
Yeah, it’s an Apple issue. It has been. I’ve got internal speakers as well, but just never use them because they sound awful. There are some home brewed apps as you’ve mentioned. Did you happen to look at EqMac? I used to use Soundflower in my other machines. The decent workarounds are really hardware based, honestly. The community has submitted reports to Apple on this issue and although some have gotten it to work on their Intel Mac, it has been an issue off and on for quite some time, regardless of what cable you’re connecting with unless you use the headphone out to an input on the monitor, but again, that’s still not a great solution either. I wish I had a better answer that offers an easy solution.
Just found your videos, really chill vibe you have there 😁 like it a lot! I’m a proud owner of my M1 Mac Mini, currently using my old trusty Dell U2515H (1440p, 60hz) monitor. I’m considering switching to an ultra wide monitor, but it looks like M1 Mac Mini’s don’t really have the option to support higher refresh rates than 60hz at resolutions like 3440x1440.. If I’m not mistaken, your monitor supports 100hz but can you confirm that refresh rate is capped at 60? I would love to use an ultra wide on something like 75 or 100hz but if 60hz is the M1’s Mac then I would rather get a single 4K display for more real estate 😊
Yeah, 60Hz is where it lands. If the M1 (when) supports EGPUs then we could see that get bumped. For editing video, I’m fine with 60 (personally) and as far as gaming is concerned, which I do very little of, I’m also fine with it because if I were really into it then a Windows machine is where I’d be...but yes, so far in all my testing it’s 60.
do you know if you can go from Macbook Air M1 to Hub that has HDMI out to a HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter into iMac 2011? I tried plugging everything in but nothing happens. Is there a shortcut key to initialize? Thanks
Thanks for your detailed videos. HDMI to my 27'' LG 4k @2560x1440 (3840x2160: text is too small): 2 T3 ports are free from my M1 Mac mini :-) which wide & curved HDR 34'' would you recommend for video editing on a M1 Mac mini?
@@KevinRossRN i didn‘t find ref of your 34 in your videos: could you please share? indeed display port on my 27 LG: cable DP-HDMI? or for a new curved 34?
Whats your opinion on the Viewsonic VP2785-4k with USB type c or the Viewsonic VP3268-4K?? As monitors alone which would you say is the best for photo and video editing or what would you suggest would be good now?
Honestly, between the two, I've personally looked at the VP2785 and think it's a compelling option for photo/video. I believe it's a bit "newer" as well as far as the release goes if I'm not mistaken. I know it's a bit smaller as far as real estate, but I believe this wouldn't be missed based on the what you're getting out of the monitor. Not just USB-C, but the quality of the image. For strictly photo, I also like the BenQ line of monitors and I'm also eyeing a couple of options there as well.
@@KevinRossRN Tbh I really like the thiner bezel around the 68 line (no branding or buttons) but have been looking at the VP2785 but wasn’t sure as its actually 2017 model LCD display. There is also a VP2768 2018 model which is LED and is actually cheaper but it doesn’t have a the USB c like the VP3268 doesn’t either. It’s going to be my first monitor so want to make sure its a good one that will last. And will work well with the new M1 Mac Mini. I did have a look at the BenQ but didn’t have a clue where to start lol. Any to recommend ?
Totally understand. The monitor rabbit hole is a deep one. I was contemplating this one from BenQ: amzn.to/3brZcQL It's a little on the higher side of price, but I almost (literally almost) pulled the trigger on it. I'm still weighing this one as an option. You'll find a few other BenQ options as well when it comes to color accuracy, and at a lower price.
Alright friends. Let me know how it's going with your setups. And, as far as that HDR issue where it's toggled on in the OS as well as the Display itself, just keep in mind that this could be a varied experience among displays. This is where you'll need to experiment and correct if you need to as the OS and hardware of the display may be competing with/against each other. Keep rocking faces.
Just an additional update that I've recently reviewed a 4K monitor in the "budget" category, and I have to say I'm really like it so far: ruclips.net/video/s-BaU7DKpqw/видео.html
Thanks Kevin, its really helping. I would like to put a question, tha I cant find answer anywhere. Can I use MacbookAir (I3) as a second monitor for mac mini (m1). I am able to share my mac mini display on macbook air. But I cant find solution to use Macbook Air as a second display :)
I believe duet display has a feee trial, but yeah it’ll either take a third-party app or hardware to make it happen. Unfortunately using a MacBook as a secondary display natively isn’t very easy. Not like an iPad or one of those inexpensive mobile displays. Screen recycler used to work, but it’s out of development. But I believe duet is still being developed.
Man, this was great just the info I was looking for. I'm buying a 3440x1440 monitor for my M1 Macbook Air and I just wanted to check if it will work, and for the results of your testing, it looks like at least @60hz I'm good to go. Great video!
If I connect my MacBook Air m1 to a 4K display via USB-c will I get the 60hz display while still using MacBook screen along with the 4K display. Thanks
Yes. As long as your refresh rate is 60Hz on the monitor. The MBA can actually push a higher refresh rate if the monitor is capable. I’ve tested it on a gaming monitor.
Hey Kevin, loving your channel and it's been really helpful in deciding what M1 to get. I've settled on a M1 Mini 16GB with 256GB of storage (still iffy on the storage but think I should be alright with using SSDs as you've mentioned in other videos). I'm still trying to figure out what would be the best monitor for me currently. I'm a filmmaker so primarily will be using it for editing and some occasional photography work. My budget left after the M1 Mini, a keyboard, and mouse is about $950. I notice you recommended the Benq 32" and might just save up a bit more for it but do you think it's worth it or should I go with that mid-tier curved LG you recommend. The extra space seems really nice but I'm hoping to get a monitor that'll stick around as I grow. Mostly just wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this :)
Awesome having you around the channel. Much appreciated. So I personally eyed the BenQ for myself, and still considering it. It is actually a 4K monitor, whereas the LG is roughly the same spec as my Ultrawide, which has been fine for me. Both of those LG monitors are quite popular and I've had folks bounce back to let me know how much they like them. I think the LG's would certainly serve you for awhile. As far as color accuracy you're likely going to come closer with the BenQ, but I'd say don't necessarily obliterate your budget if you don't have to, unless you're more serious about photography. What are you currently using?
@@KevinRossRN thanks for getting back to me so quickly man. I’m definitely more into filmmaking and do photography on the side to support it essentially. I want to deliver quality work so I’m trying set myself for that as I get better but I can also upgrade over time. Overthinking it all probably. I think I might go with that mid tier one similar to yours. It’s good to know that’ll last awhile and maybe one day I’ll jump up to something even nicer. I was using a 2012 MBP so I’m sure I’ll end up being way happier with the newer setup. Thanks again and looking forward to checking out more of your stuff dude!! :D
Happy to help (if I did). And honestly, those mid-tier monitors are good in my opinion. I think one of those things where when you’re starting out, as long as the color calibration is dialed in, you’ll be fine. And then, as you grow and if you’re doing more work where that kind of razor thin margin of accuracy is necessary, then you’re getting something that’s even beyond that BenQ. Not to mention this technology is definitely taking another turn (for the better) where these panels are just going to be extraordinary and be a better long term investment because of the longevity they will have and the color science will be near “perfect.”
@@KevinRossRN You’ve definitely helped a ton! Definitely looking forward to that new tech down the line. Thanks again for everything and happy to see your channel growing man. Wish you the best with all you do! Excited to see what you bring next
My friend, I'm looking for the best keyboard and mouse option for the mac mini m1..the use I make mainly of logic pro X and a bit of video editing..Which keyboard and mouse do you think is the best choice for me? I've heard that the mac mini m1 has some problems with the bluetooth connection and for this reason I was thinking of getting the magic keyboard and the magic mouse that are from apple..Do you think that the mx keys and the mx master 3 are a better choice? In the long run they are just as reliable like the apple keyboard and the magic mouse? Do they have connectivity issues or are they compatible like the apple?
So with the latest BT updates it seems that much of this is “fixed” I really love the key travel on the MX line, but either keyboard should work well. The one advantage of the MX line up is that they do come with Bluetooth receivers that plug in via the USB. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to keep them connected all the time, but I can report myself and others have circled back around to tell me that it did work when initially starting up the Mac. For those that just purchased the Mac and don’t have that Big Sur 11.2 update I know it can be worrisome on that initial boot up. I actually have a wired keyboard laying around that I had to use on that first boot when I got the machine in November, but I’ve tried to replicate the problem and was able to use the BT receiver on the MX keys...and it did work. For me I like the ergonomics better on the MX line because the magic keyboard does feel flat, although I do love typing on Apple keyboards (usually). The mouse is definitely not a fav of mine and I don’t know what Apple was thinking when it comes to that flat design, but I get the aesthetics part. Do you have a cheap wired keyboard lying around just in case? As far as the day to day though, I never lose connection with the MX keys and Master 3. It was just on that initial boot.
I saw that the mix keys, along with the usb stick, also contains a usb-c cable whenever I hope the first time I turn on the Mac mini to recognize it even with a cable connection..As for the mx master 3 I have seen great reviews from many people..I hope I did not make the wrong choice that I bought the Mx keys and the mx master 3 instead of the magic keyboard and the Magic Mouse and not to regret it..😩😩😩
Oh I forgot it does come with a cable. I never used it because I have so many type c cables already. The BT receiver is in there though and that should help.
Hey Kevin, great video! I just got myself an LG 27UN850-w and Im using the usb-c cable but no sound coming from the monitor. Is this normal? thank you!
Did you double check the OSD control on the monitor itself to see if the volume is down? Also, in system preferences and audio settings, is your monitor showing up?
@@KevinRossRN I feel like such a newb. Lol. After checking the built in menu countless times, it finally worked my just unmuting by toggling the sound from the monitor itself. Thank you!

I currently have a Lenovo P44W 43” curved monitor. I am interested in the new M1 Mac Mini. Will I run into any issues? I can use HDMI or Thunderbolt. Thanks.
Yeah, even though I’ve got the MBA I’m still using the iPad Air right now...so far. I try to keep it as a separate device for one business. That way I can keep the mini and MBA exclusively for creative work. Although I do love editing photos on it.

You should be fine with either the USB-C to DisplayPort or USB-C to HDMI. I personally prefer the DisplayPort option, but that’s just me. I do use HDMI as well, but I just color calibrate for video editing. Every monitor has its hang ups, but just make tweaks where you need to within the monitor on screen display settings.
Sir, Connecting a USB C - HDMI 2.0 4k 60Hz cable from Mac to TV .. did that connect with 60Hz or 30 Hz, say TV is just a 4k LED TV not a HDR TV. Thanks :) & Nice video :)
Hi Kevin, I LOVE your video, I cannot believe I took so long to realize that my lagging mouse is due to 30HZ rate, I tried new HDMI cable, not working because my monitor doesn't have HDR, then I bought a type-c to DP, problem solved. One thing I am still confused is about DP version. My Mac mini M1 only works well with my monitor in DP 1.1 version, if I change to DP 1.2 version in my monitor setting, the monitor cannot detect my Mac mini M1. However my Surface Laptop 3 only has 30HZ in DP 1.1, and I need to manually change to DP 1.2, then my Surface can work in 60HZ mode. I am confused if it's a problem of my monitor/cable/operating system, can you share some insights on this? Thanks a lot
I’ve been looking over some info on this monitor. Still working, but this may be a firmware/software issue with that monitor. Not necessarily an issue with the monitor, but potentially needing a firmware update. Some monitors have a program that you can install that helps you get the most out of it, and may also provide some updates.
Hi Kevin, can I use the usb charging chord that I received with my M1 macbook air to connect to an external monitor ? Or do I need a thunderbolt only to get 65 w charging as well as display on the monitor?
I don't play games regularly, I mostly surf, email, telegram, programming, MS office, YT videos and edit music on GarageBand, I might edit a picture with Gimp or similar and at some point I will load Linux and dual boot. What would u suggest as a monitor?
@@KevinRossRN $400 or less, for a 27" monitor. My iMac is a 27" and I like this size. I might look at a 29 but nothing bigger. Not interested in anything more than $400. I know the prices go much higher than that. I use my computer for enjoyment and kill time and keep my brain working, I'm 72.
Honestly, for the budget and your use, I think something along these lines: amzn.to/3tLX2lF will serve your needs. It's not 4K, but has a good picture. I actually have one of these...although my kid is using it, but it's got a decent picture for the price. It's definitely not going to be iMac picture quality (if it's a 5K iMac you have), but it won't blow out your budget and it should serve more of a general (broad) workflow.
@@KevinRossRN my current iMac is a 2011 model with 2560x1440. Something with the same or better resolution would be fine I think. I have no issues with my current iMacs monitor. Thanks
I’m all for budget options. I think it’s a decent monitor for the price, however I believe their customer service is lacking. Based on what I know from other creatives that is.
FYI, I was trying to get my Macbook Pro May 2020 to display at native resolution on my external monitor Acer XR382CQK (3840x1600 @ 75 Hz.) via USB C-USB C cable. It was not initially working and was staying consistent at native resolution but locked at 30 Hz. The work around that the manual of my monitor indicated that in order to get full monitor resolution of the DP ALT port, you need to turn off USB 3.0 capabilities of the integrated USB 3.0 hub of the monitor so it can only work at 2.0 speeds. What this does, I assume, is that allocates that data bandwidth to the video instead of the data. When doing so, I had to switch the option to off and then press down on the joystick so it could enable it. Once that happened, I went back to my display settings and repeated the stems that Kevin here highlights so you can see the refresh rate and at that point it was no longer grayed out.
Ah ha! Nice share my friend and really glad that this workaround helped. It’s tough because every monitor and workflow requires minor tweaks...at least from my testing. I have a BenQ that required no adaption. Just plugged it in and ready to roll.
Hi Kevin, I'm in the UK and bought my MBA M1 13" 256GB with 8GB Memory 2 weeks ago. Still using my iMac 21.5" (Late 2012 model) until I decide on which monitor to buy.(iMac will then be retired). As you know the MBA is 2560 x 1600 so does it matter what resolution the monitor has or can I just adjust as per your videos? Can you recommend a monitor? I was looking at 24/25" but now realise I could have a 27" as the amount of space it would take up on my desk would be no more than the iMac due to the iMac's broad borders, especially along the bottom. I don't do any gaming. I just use RUclips, email, messages, contacts, photos (just to look at), documents including spreadsheets. Basic home user. Lots of confusing information out there. What should I buy? Thank you.
Yeah, so you should be fine with most options out there...my monitor is 3440 x 1440, which works, however I'lll give viewsonic a thumbs up on also allowing us to make adjustments within the monitor itself. However, have you looked at anything from BenQ? amzn.to/3b3xeZI It's 1080P, but I would say for your use I believe the image quality would be great. Just make sure to grab one of the USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort cables.
You should be fine as those cables should be rated for the speed/throughput needed for the monitor. I’d try that first before purchasing a third-party cable.
Hi. Great info. I am just a newbie. Just wanted to know something. Will the LG 35WN75C-B - 35” QHD (3440 x 1440) Curved Monitor be compatible with my M1 macbook pro 2020 version

I've tried all the display settings but nothing ig fixing the blurry text. I've seen a bunch of people complain about it. Any ideas on a fix?
How did you get 3440 x 1440 on your monitor with HDMI? I can't get that resolution plus there's no audio control on the Mac. So, you'll have to adjust volume control on the monitor itself each time you want to change the volume level. I tried USB C to Display as well. With this connection I got the 3440 x 1440 but no audio control. Any suggestion how to solve this issue?
For the resolution on the HDMI, which cable are you using? Meaning is it capable of carrying high speed throughout? As far as the monitor audio, that is definitely a Mac issue (for awhile) there is a workaround. I need to find it. I personally don’t use my speaker monitors because they are just terrible...Which I know most monitor speakers are. Not all, but most I’ve worked with. Let me see if I can find that workaround.
I haven’t personally, but this is also monitor dependent. I know a small handful here that had an issue with their monitor, which I don’t have a running list of each monitor that this an issue with. Is there a particular monitor you’re referring to?
@@KevinRossRN It isn't an issue with the monitors itself. It's how MacOS rends texts plus treats non-retina ie non-4k displays . Starting Mojave, they basically removed antialiasing for text which has caused issues with text looking blurry combined with no HiDPI rendering.
No, I hear what you’re saying and I definitely should have included that in my reply as I’ve had other convos here in the comments on MacOS specifically. As far as monitors are concerned it seems that there are specific monitors are “better” at dealing with this issue over others. I’ve tested several of the same brands, BenQ being one of them, where they would all provide a pretty stellar viewing experience on MacOS. Whereas there are a couple of Dell monitors, which I think are also great, but that have that issue where text is pixelated/blurry, but the RGB/Color rendering can be stunning. And Dell flat out says that they are not testing these on Macs at all. Whether that’s true or not from the R&D perspective, but there have been customer service responses on some of their ultrawides that state these are only tested on Windows 🤷♂️ But again, you are correct and this is something that we all have to be mindful of is that some of these monitors are able to deliver the same quality and functionality on either hardware, because there’s also others that have stated a superior experience on their PCs while a very subpar one on their Mac with the same monitor. I’m hoping with this next iteration of MacOS that we’ll start to get some of this functionality back because with the GPU, and the communication protocol for displays all occurring within an Apple SoC, they could actually make this better. This is also just one of those things where Apple is forcing app development to utilize metal as well as pressuring other hardware manufacturers to develop a line specific for Mac hardware. Display companies are already doing this, but unfortunately it’s also not clear to the consumer.
In the description, could you please name also the exact monitor models and not just only "34" Ultrawide Option from LG". The link do not work anymore, and amazon is suggesting other models or sponsored links => I am not sure, which model you are refering to!
Actually, apologies. I just linked the Viewsonic…let me see if I can find the details on the LG because it seems they’re always the one changing up their model numbers.
Hi Kevin, looking for some monitor options if you could thanks. I’m in Thailand 🇹🇭 so 2 or 3 options just in case I can’t get your #1. I’m about to upgrade my 2017 iMac and MacBook Pro to a M1 Mini and a MB Air. 80% Lightroom user and 20% Premier Pro but I sell the video on line so need something reasonably colour accurate. Any suggestions is appreciated 🙏. Don’t really have a budget maybe 1500 range or so.
@@KevinRossRN yes we do have all major brands it’s just sometimes you get the odd occasional specific high end model they say “sorry cannot import” for some unknown reason. Flat and big curved if you have some ideas would be great cheers
Were you able to get the monitor to work with the USB-C to HDMI directly out out of the USB-C port from the Mac-Mini? When I tried the monitor that was connected to the USB-C port was flickering
I have a problem. I have an ultra wide monitor and when using the scaled (yes I am pressing options too) the max resolution is much lower than I need and it just looks so blurry. I am connecting it via HDMI 2.0 from a thunderbolt adapter?
@@KevinRossRN Do you think that could be the problem? I could buy a USB TO display port. I am really not that clued up on cables but if purchasing a better display port would that allow me to increase the screen resolution on my MacBook? as my MacBook Air is suppose to allow much higher resolution. Thanks mate
Sometimes, especially with the Air. MacOS unfortunately isn’t great with some monitors. I don’t have all the specifics of each monitor because there are so many, but definitely a handful. It’s just the way MacOS “communicates” with these monitors. Anyway, my ultrawide is best with USB-C from the MBA or Display Port. Personally speaking that is.
I need the colour accuracy as an illustrator/graphic designer/ photographer so I use and ezio cs2731. Calibration done with a spider X through ezio’s colour calibration software. It’s all 98% cmyk capable as well. so a real bonus. Has usb c big display port and hdmi but no card reader which is a shame. Banging monitor though. That’s what I use with the m1.
I have a MacBook air, not the m1 one and got a 34 inch monitor from gigabyte. I think my laptop can’t handle it because it gives me mouse lag, even though I played around with resolutions to make it as minimal as possible. But my issue is, no matter the resolution on the laptop, or monitor, everything on the monitor is stretched too wide, this is most noticeable with images and videos. My yt videos do not have black on the sides to make it match the wide screen, it simply stretches everything out. I don’t know what to do about it or if it is the monitors fault as I tried every possible setting and solution I could find on forums. So I’m thinking of changing my monitor to see if there is any difference. Have you had any of these issues with this one? Or if you have any idea why this could be happening? I connected it through hdmi2 from the monitor to the multiport hub which then goes into the usbc laptop 😊
@@KevinRossRN my macbook air supports 2560x1600 pixels max. But there is no option to set the monitor to that, even after I click the option button when clicking on “scaled”, which shows me other resolutions available. So I have to set my monitors resolution to 2560x1440, and then match my macbook to it. This option also looks the best regarding the quality of the picture on the monitor itself, although as I said it is very stretched out, and the mouse lag still happens every few seconds. I’m really unsure if I bought the incorrect monitor for my macbook as I’m not very tech savvy 😁 and I very much appreciate your help with this!
So in display settings, do you have the option of using as mirrored display, extended display, or main display? Try either extended or main. You should have the option of 3440 x 1440 If you’re having issues then you can also try DISPLAYLINK for MacOS on the Synaptics website. No guarantee, but I’ve heard from others that it has helped with their M1 setups.
I use a powered hub these days: amzn.to/3zsiUFH However a bus powered hub that can offer that 60Hz is another one from Anker: amzn.to/3iIypmS I do still use the HooToo on the back of my monitor as an additional hub.
Yes, I did recommend that in the video. You’d want to utilize a high speed cable for sure because I’ve had folks reach out that couldn’t achieve 60, but they were using a slower cable...but yes, correct on that.
Hello I've had some problems with this full set up! I was successfully able to connect my MacBook to the desktop but the Bluetooth mouse & keyboard (Lenovo brand) that is connected to the desktop weren't able to function when I've closed the laptop. Does the bluetooth set have to be connected to the MacBook or the desktop when I want to use it with the MacBook closed?
So when the MacBook is in clamshell mode (lid closed), as long as it’s connected to the external display and the Bluetooth peripherals were previously connected it should still function. I assume the keyboard and mouse work with the lid open and connected to the display?
@@KevinRossRN Thank you for the reply! The mouse & keyboard works before it’s connected to the MacBook, but once it’s connected, they both don’t work ( lid opened or closed). They only work when I connect them to the MacBook not the desktop but in that case I don’t have enough usb-c spots🥺 Could it be that the desktop I’m using is connected to a hard drive not just a desktop?
Ohhhh, that’s likely why. Even though it’s a monitor it still has the computer built in, which is likely the reason why since it’s not just a standalone monitor, which does create a whole other set of workarounds because they’re basically “competing” with each other.
I’m going to be running some tests with the new MBP comes in, but for right now, per what I know, the LG ultra fine displays (5K and 4K) as well as Apple’s own display. However I’m going to be looking into and researching other options. Sometimes a monitor may try to respond to the True Tone functionality built into the Mac, but it’s not always accurate.
Great video - super informative. After owning many Macs over many years I am now going to buy my first Mini with a 34-inch ultra wide display. Waiting for the new Mini release. It's the extra ports in the Mini and option to plug in any size display is so compelling.
Thank goodness you're here, my monitor was stuck at 30Hz with a macbook air, all I had to do was enable HDR. Brilliant.
Awesome! Love to hear it.
Kevin! Bought that ViewSonic VP3481 Monitor back in December after watching a couple videos of you talking about it. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. Getting 60Hz refresh rate on my current mac all day. Amazing.
Yes indeed! Love hearing this. So glad it’s working out for you. And I agree, I love it too 👍👊
Just sorted a problem with my screen thanks to this video. Now using USB-C to Display port instead of HDMI - Thanks bro
Happy to help friend. That’s awesome.
Sorry if my comment is a mess, I’ve been thinking about it for a week, making a ton of research on monitors, on docs, on M1 connectivity.. d’uh
Maybe you can help me understand if I need to go 4k (more future proof but no high refresh rate). Hdr is also important for future hdr content creation. My budget is $500 for each monitor max (I live in Russia and we have inflated prices, so $500 turns into $1000 equivalent).
Maybe someone will help me 😅
Cheers and have a great day to anyone who read this far
You're gonna make it big one day. Great content, just keep putting in the time and people will eventually find you. The M1 info brought me here, and I found myself watching more and more videos because of the high quality videos!
Well I really appreciate you taking the time to say so, and your time here on the channel.
Many thanks and look forward to seeing you around here.
I have a Macbook Air M1, I just want a basic 4k monitor set up.
What would you suggest for a base model hub and TV?
Am i better looking for a USB-C compatible monitor or a display port functionality?
Keep up the good work
I'm not a creator so don't need top spec features 👍🏻
Well for the money, this monitor is hard to beat, and it works great with the M1 ruclips.net/video/s-BaU7DKpqw/видео.html
No that you need to watch another video, but I did test it and I’m using daily.
First time iMac Mini purchase. This video helped me understand my display connection options. Thanks!
Happy to help. Hope that you get your mini up and running and make great things happen. With whatever you want to create or do. 🤙👊
Interesting. Are you still on Big Sur?
Open it up and type: defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 1
1 enables light, 2 is medium and 3 is strong smoothing, so you can replace the number with how much smoothing you want.
To disable it you can replace the number with a 0 (zero)
You’ll restart your computer after you type the command.
Feel free to look it up if you want to double check it before trying it.
Just search for font smoothing in Big Sur.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks you Kevin! I tried what you told me but it still looks the same :(
So not having this monitor myself, have been able to dig into the monitor settings a bit more to find a setting that works?
Awesome, thanks a bunch! 👍🏻
You got it. Best of luck 🤞
I did a review on this display: The External Display That Actually Works With the M1 Max MacBook Pro
ruclips.net/video/s-BaU7DKpqw/видео.html
I use it daily.
I do love an ultra wide (obviously) but if you’re really into photo that 27 inch (two) would be ideal.
thanks for the informative video.

@@KevinRossRN I have an old Dell XPS 15 from 2017, but that doesn’t have the same functionality via USB C, so it’s been hard to test
How about the HDMI out on the M1 Max? Does that work?
This is the exact one that I’ve used: amzn.to/3wG78oR
And as far as the BT issues, I did use a wired keyboard on initial set up.
@@KevinRossRN Thanks for your help Kevin. Will see how it goes 😊
Awesome. Best of luck 🤞
Thanks a lot for the video, but I'm a little confused. Should I better use a Thunderbolt to display port cable? Or a usb-c to display port cable?
It’s actually a USB-C cable if you have that option with the monitor you choose. It’ll either be the one that comes with the monitor, or I’m actually using this one on my 14 inch MBP: amzn.to/31vn2sf
Otherwise if you don’t have USB-C to USB-C then the usb- c to display port is this one: amzn.to/3Dl9iNK
I would say that the 34 is plenty for most. Honestly, I’ve never once said, “I wish had more screen real estate.”
@@KevinRossRN thanks.. with having the Macbook Air M1 would I get the USB-C version of the ViewSonic 34"?
@@KevinRossRN The cable you are talking about is the UNI cable that costs 29$? Thanks a lot, Kevin.
Which country are you in? I see 16.99 USD.
@@KevinRossRN Yes, when I click in your link, redirects me to Amazon Spain and not appears any specific cable. Is the reason of asking you.
Yes, the ultra sharp line of monitors from Dell are definitely a popular choice.
All this is blowing over my head!! Can someone please suggest which ultra-wide screen with good display for a MacBook Air m1. And what cables I need for it. Thanks 🙏
The ultrawide in the video is what I’m still using. I’ve had no issues with it, and the needed cables come with the monitor. It’s in the description.

So I'm testing this exact HDMI to DP cable: amzn.to/2XwKWxT (for reference)

to the hdmi or to the display port at the monitor?
Just read that the DP on the monitor is version 1.2
So i need a hdmi - DP 1.2 cable to get 4K 60HZ right?
Think i give the hdmi-hdmi a try at first. The specs of the mini say: hdmi is up to 4K 60HZ...
You got it 👊
Thanks for the detailed video! I'm having some problem connecting my M1 Macbook Air to my Prism+ W270 Pro monitor. The signal between the two devices keep flickering and nothing shows up on the monitor, is it a compatability issue? Would really appreciate if you could give me some tips!
How are you connecting it?
Thanks!
That’s awesome! Really glad you popped over here to let me know. I always appreciate the updates on how it’s going. Great to hear it’s going well 😉👊
Hi Kevin, Thanks for your great review.
First, congrats on the order. Second, are the reviews discussing this issue on Amazon, or elsewhere?
@@KevinRossRN forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-m1-with-benq-ew3280u-32-monitor.2272597/ this is one of the forums
@@KevinRossRN really don't know what to buy. Budget is around 500 euro and need it for editing. Any suggestions?
Did you check anything out from LG? LG 27UK850-W
Hey Kevin! Have you had any issues with the external monitor losing signal? My display would randomly discount here and there and I heard a lot of other people are having the same issue. I was wondering if it the adapters or HDMI, have you seen any issue come up while you were testing out these accessories?
Not with this display, and I have a recent video of a 4K display that I reviewed that I also use daily without issues. Which monitor are you using?
Hi Kevin, Thank you for replying!
I am using a Samsung 32in 4k curve LU32R590CWNXZA
Are you using Apple air M1?
For the budget, quite a few have considered this one: amzn.to/3c5GK0W
BenQ also makes some decent IPS panels for design, but they do bump in price.
@@KevinRossRN I haven't been looking at a particular line of monitors. Thank You for your help.
Sure thing. If you need to bounce more options just let me know.
Thanks for all these infos! Is usb-c to usb-c the preferred connection (it definitely is the most convenient when using a laptop)? Did you also test a 49“ monitor like the dell u4919?
I haven’t tested. 49” but others on here have said it works. USB-C in my opinion is the best, and the next best would be USB-C to Display port.
Great Video ! Only the USB-C to USB-c will able to charge the MBA (and use the monitor as a HUB) ? It's possible other way ? Thank you!
Unless you get a powered dock, which I just did a review on, but that’s correct, USB-C to USB-C.
@@KevinRossRN Great, thanks! I will check the review!!
You bet. Best of luck
Did you manage to output 4K HDR to your LG OLED TV?
Hi man. How did you connect the m1 to the display ? Is that 30hz or 60hz and how ?
USB-C and yes, 60.
USB-C to C and USB-C to DisplayPort is recommended…at least based on my experience.
Subbed!!
Glad to have you here friend, and yes, we should see those M1X devices very soon.
Exciting times 🎉
@@KevinRossRN I see thanks! Will grab a usb-c/hdmi cable and test whether is there any difference
Sounds good. Just make sure it’s a high speed cable and you should be good. Interested to see what you find out.
*Does your macbook get too hot when connecting an external monitor?*
No, but is this something you’re experiencing?
Hi, did you have done any reviews for speakers for Mac. If not I’ll appreciate it if you could recommend me some.
Do you have a particular budget in mind? Bluetooth/wireless or something that plugs in? And do you have a size limit in mind for your desk?
@@KevinRossRN not very low budget or very hi, something be good for MacBook Air and PS4 not too big not too small. It’s for my son actually.I have Bose Companion . Thanks
Ah not sure which companion model you have, but on a similar note have you seen these from Edifier? amzn.to/38pTmwQ
They’re going to be a bit “brighter” than something like the companion.

I also reviewed this monitor:

Great video mate, how is the temperature after an hour-or-so of usage with the display running?
Which model is it? Refresh rate? And then what about your settings? Anything like vsync or custom HDR settings activated?
I have Mac mini m1 and the MacBook Air m1...external monitor connected to the Mac mini, how can I ALSO connect my MacBook Air to the Mac mini to use as a 2nd monitor. I want to color grade (or at least check color) on my Air. Thanks man!
So, not necessarily a “quick and easy” solution. But this article can illuminate some of the limitations.
It used to be that we could use target display mode with old iMacs, but these chipsets are requiring a bit more of a workaround that includes a combo of hardware and software.

If my Monitor has HDMI but connected to my Macbook Pro M1 instead of the Mac Mni, will the 60hz work?
It’ll really depend on the monitor and the cable you’re using. It’s possible, but the limitation is unfortunately due to MacOS, but with certain monitors it can be possible.
What's best to use to connect a Macbook Pro 2019 (only USB-C) to a display: 1) Display Port, 2) USB-C, or 3) HDMI
I’d prioritize USB-C to USB-C if possible, however I get great performance out of USB-C to DisplayPort.
Great content ! Is 34 ‘’ too much for the M1 Mac mini : LG UltraWide 34WN650-W ? Thanks !
The monitor I’m using is 34. Love the size.
Good Video Brother! Yeah, Turning on HDR from the display preferences in macOS washes everything out. Turning it on from the display looks great. 👍
@@KevinRossRN Lol yeah. HDR does look weird on some things. I’m trying to find that perfect color balance of how things looks on my iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Yeah, I tend to watch my video (before posting) on my screen, an Android device and then iPhone. Let’s just say they all have their own “look” which makes it very interesting for editing. I just rely more on my scopes, but still like to check it on those devices before publish.
which is better for connecting M1 air to extal 4k display ? using a hub using HDMI or USB C to display port or HDMI port?
I’ve found that USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to DisplayPort to be the best. If you need a hub because you need more connectivity, then I’d run a USB-C out of that if possible.
@@KevinRossRN I used with a hub. When I am using with external hub I feel like battery drain so faster than usual . Thanks

I was contemplating this one from BenQ: amzn.to/3brZcQL
It's a little on the higher side of price, but I almost (literally almost) pulled the trigger on it.

Awesome. Glad it helped friend.

So with the latest BT updates it seems that much of this is “fixed”
I really love the key travel on the MX line, but either keyboard should work well.

Glad to help and hope it works out, friend.
I use a Dell Alienware 3420 can i use this monitor with the Macbook Pro for music production?!
So TVs are so varied and my 120Hz capable TV was only displaying at 30Hz via HDMI.
@@KevinRossRN Thank you so much :)
You bet.
Hey, glad to have you here. So to dig in deeper, which monitor are you rocking?
@@KevinRossRN HP Z27S, this is a monitor bought 2 years ago~
I’ve been looking over some info on this monitor. Still working, but this may be a firmware/software issue with that monitor. Not necessarily an issue with the monitor, but potentially needing a firmware update. Some monitors have a program that you can install that helps you get the most out of it, and may also provide some updates.
@@KevinRossRN Oh I didn't realize that, I will do some research and get back to you with the result, thank you Kevin, you are genius.
Well, genius might be a stretch...😀
But yes, these monitors can be a little finicky.
Hi Kevin, can I use the usb charging chord that I received with my M1 macbook air to connect to an external monitor ? Or do I need a thunderbolt only to get 65 w charging as well as display on the monitor?
Usually those are just power only and no data transmission. I believe I have a USB-C cable in the description that I’ve tested and use on the daily.
@@KevinRossRN thanks will check it out
Cool. Hope it works for you….well it should work, but just hope you like it as much as I do.
I don't play games regularly, I mostly surf, email, telegram, programming, MS office, YT videos and edit music on GarageBand, I might edit a picture with Gimp or similar and at some point I will load Linux and dual boot. What would u suggest as a monitor?
Any particular budget or size that you’re leaning toward?
Thanks
What are your thoughts on a budget option such as Philips 276E9QDSB 27" frameless monitor, Full HD IPS, 124% sRGB?
However, have you looked at anything from BenQ? amzn.to/3b3xeZI
It's 1080P, but I would say for your use I believe the image quality would be great. Just make sure to grab one of the USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort cables.
Hey Kevin, would we lose quality if we used an hdmi to hdmi cable that comes with the monitor (Benq 1080p monitor)?
You should be fine as those cables should be rated for the speed/throughput needed for the monitor. I’d try that first before purchasing a third-party cable.
Great, thanks very much buddy. Wishing you the best.
And you as well. 👊
Hi. Great info. I am just a newbie. Just wanted to know something. Will the LG 35WN75C-B - 35” QHD (3440 x 1440) Curved Monitor be compatible with my M1 macbook pro 2020 version

The 34 inch should be fine. Did you looks at this one? amzn.to/3FdKR5I
What’s your primary use? I forgot to ask.
@@KevinRossRN My primary use is mainly web development. Just wanted a compatible widescreen monitor for my Mac M1, so that I can comfortably work with multiple windows rather than switching between them frequently for work like the way I am doing with currently with my 13 inch MBP screen.
When i connect an external monitor the text is super pixelated with the Macbook Pro M1 Mini, connected with USB C and DisplayPort. My monitor is 144hz refresh rate. I've tried all the display settings but nothing ig fixing the blurry text. I've seen a bunch of people complain about it. Any ideas on a fix?
Which monitor do you have?
Are you having issues with the blurred text that's been an issue since Mojave on using non-4k monitors with Macs?
Whether that’s true or not from the R&D perspective, but there have been customer service responses on some of their ultrawides that state these are only tested on Windows 🤷♂️
But again, you are correct and this is something that we all have to be mindful of is that some of these monitors are able to deliver the same quality and functionality on either hardware, because there’s also others that have stated a superior experience on their PCs while a very subpar one on their Mac with the same monitor.
It’s the VP3481: amzn.to/3Cd1IoQ
Actually, apologies. I just linked the Viewsonic…let me see if I can find the details on the LG because it seems they’re always the one changing up their model numbers.
Hi Kevin, looking for some monitor options if you could thanks. I’m in Thailand 🇹🇭 so 2 or 3 options just in case I can’t get your #1. Were you able to get the monitor to work with the USB-C to HDMI directly out out of the USB-C port from the Mac-Mini? When I tried the monitor that was connected to the USB-C port was flickering
Which monitor are you plugging into?
@@KevinRossRN Dual HP 30”
And flickering on both? And have you tried just HDMI on one of them to see if it’s replicated?
I have a problem. I have an ultra wide monitor and when using the scaled (yes I am pressing options too) the max resolution is much lower than I need and it just looks so blurry. I am connecting it via HDMI 2.0 from a thunderbolt adapter?
Does the monitor have any other connections besides HDMI?

That’s what I use with the m1.
Nice! Really appreciate you sharing this. I’m going to look it up 👊👍
@@KevinRossRN All subbed by the way! handy content
Well I’m glad to have you here, thanks!
Which specific monitor did you end up getting?
@@KevinRossRN Gigabyte G34WQC
And so in display settings, are you getting the option of 3440 x 1440?
What are the other display options in those settings?
You should have the option of 3440 x 1440
If you’re having issues then you can also try DISPLAYLINK for MacOS on the Synaptics website. No guarantee, but I’ve heard from others that it has helped with their M1 setups.
Have you tried a hub that supports 4K 60Hz? Because the one you are using is limited to 4K 30Hz.
I use a powered hub these days: amzn.to/3zsiUFH
However a bus powered hub that can offer that 60Hz is another one from Anker: amzn.to/3iIypmS
I do still use the HooToo on the back of my monitor as an additional hub.
I love how honest and humble you are! It just a warm feeling. Thank you this video! It helped me out a lot! Take care!
Well I’m glad that it help you out friend. Best of luck.
Does using USB-C display out from the Mac give you access to the USB hub on the monitor ?
It does indeed. That’s how I use it. I have a hub connected to the other USB-C port.
I'n not sure if you mentioned it, but can't you just use a "high-speed" HDMI cable (i.e 2.1 cable)?
So when you say desktop, I assume you’re referring to a monitor, correct?
@@KevinRossRN Oooh yes, monitor! I’m not sure why it’s not working😞 It’s a Lenovo A540 all in one desktop….
Ohhhh, that’s likely why. Even though it’s a monitor it still has the computer built in, which is likely the reason why since it’s not just a standalone monitor, which does create a whole other set of workarounds because they’re basically “competing” with each other.
Hello Kevin which monitors support true tone like Macbooks ?
I’m going to be running some tests with the new MBP comes in, but for right now, per what I know, the LG ultra fine displays (5K and 4K) as well as Apple’s own display.
However I’m going to be looking into and researching other options. Sometimes a monitor may try to respond to the True Tone functionality built into the Mac, but it’s not always accurate.
