    I’m surprised ppl are weirded out about Rice and yogurt combination. It’s eaten together all the time in India. I guess outside, yogurt is synonymous to sweetened yogurt while in India ppl prefer bland or maybe a bit sour yogurt.. which goes perfectly with any spicy dish as it cuts the heat..

    • @RoxanneLavender
      @RoxanneLavender 11 месяцев назад +6

      Outside of India we just use 'plain natural yoghurt' for curries, which is obviously totally not sweet at all, and it's plain and sour. Perhaps they don't have this kind of yoghurt in East Asia.

  • @shinraackerman9091
    @shinraackerman9091 Год назад +491

    Yeah every foreigner feels weird to have yoghurt with rice. But to clarify Indians use "curd" which is also obtained from fermenting milk but in a different way. I guess Indians living in other countries find the plain pot set yoghurt as an alternative for the curd. After trying out various flavoured yoghurts myself, I completely understand why foreigners feel it that way. To clarify again normal Indians have plain yoghurt (no sweetness) with rice, psychopaths may have flavored yoghurts with rice!

    • @lucone2937
      @lucone2937 Год назад +10

      In Finland yoghurt is usually eaten separately like ice cream, and it has rather sweet taste like vanilla, banana, or strawberry. You can also buy unflavoured yoghurts and give them more taste with your favourite jam or fruits like bananas.There are also coffee and coconut flavoured yoghurts.

    Westerner here. I heard tomato and egg are one of China's simplest dishes. China has so many delicious and aromatic foods, I truly wish I could taste each and every one of them. My favorites in my life have to be Malatang guo🌶(spicy stir-fried ingredients with aromatic spicy condiments), ZhaJiangMian (yes the Chinese black bean noodles that have inspired the jjajangmyeon widely popularized in korea!), 🍚Steamed Sticky Rice with Crab🦀 (best rice dish I have ever tasted in my life), and Chinese stir-fried rice cakes (chao nian gao) literally immaculate flavors that they can make both sweet and salty. I am deeply inspired by their cooking. 🇨🇳 ❤

    Basmati rice, hot('spicy') potato shaak(potato/tomato/coriander curry), mixed with totally not-sweet yoghurt is what i grew up eating. I mean for a while as a child my mother didn't give me the yoghurt and made me eat this extremely hot/spicy food and it burnt my mouth, but then there was yoghurt on the table and i asked for it and from then-on i would be literally mixing a load of yoghurt into the curry and rice all the time and was just the best, all sloppy and delicious and filling, so perfect. I'd have that with a pint of plain salty chaas as well. Now i'm a vegan and i can't find a good yoghurt alternative because here in England, UK they're all sweet even when they say unsweetened, so i would just eat normal hot Indian food, but i became allergic to the chilli peppers used in Indian food, lmao, i can only eat Korean chilli pepper now, it's the only hot chilli pepper that doesn't make my mouth swollen(i used to eat sandwiches full of jalapenos and now i can't even touch my tongue to a jalapeno without my mouth getting swollen). So sometimes i make Indian curry with that delicious Korean chilli pepper gochugaru fine, and it works so much better taste-wise, soooo much better than the chilli peppers used in India, it's not as spicy/hot by a very long shot, but there's something very special about the flavour of this chilli pepper, it elevates everything. Try it in the Indian curry Indian people, you'll see, if you're looking for flavour-boosts as opposed to chilli-hot burn your tongue boosts, if you want that lace your curry with jalapenos.

    Well as an Indian, I do eat rice everyday with different type of curries or dal(like pulses). so whenever there is like too much heat or too much spice its too good to put yogurt. I think it just makes it feel more like healthy to stomach or less spicy while not damaging the actual taste. As it actually adds a bit of sourness which enhances taste the bit lower down the heat and everything. Thats what normal yogurt does.
    The "raita" on the other hand might have spicies in itself, i usually like raita with a bit of spices but sum vegies in it like cucumber which makes it so so much refreshing. I usually find the only thing cucumber does to any dish is to make it fresh

That pineapple dish was a surprise because as a vietnamese, i didnt realise it was a popular vietnamese dish but i realised why she wanted to showcase pine apple in rice even though, its a Thai dish. Her context was bringing different perspective in looking fruit and savoury dishes which is new to east asia (maybe pear or nashi but not in rice) but in SEA, its so common to mix fruit as savoury and also appreciate sourness in fruits and elevate it with salt. So not only sweet fruits but also sour fruits.
