The sheer amount of crap this video has unfairly taken for being what it is is a testament to how disgusting the larger collective of RUclips commenters are. Iron Sight, installing Windows 9X was hardly ever painful really. But, its adaptation to a SD drive was probably the painful part. Windows 9X was designed to seek and check for a C:\ drive meaning the primary drive for installation. to trick it to identify the microchip drive you either have to A:) change the microchip to a start-up inside your motherboard settings if it can allow it too. B) force the installation to recognize the drive and a PATCHED setup can do it. See, also Windows 98 was designed with an initialization process to activate with the motherboard when recognized by the motherboard BIOS either or to be activated by the MICROSOFT MS-DOS operating system for which this case is used if the BIOS doesn't recognize the CD-ROM drive or the CD. If it doesn't, you need MS-DOS operating system and the MS-DOS CD DRIVER. Its a suit, one fits all DRIVES. The simpilist way is to change your boot drive from the BIOS because its the handler for which the installation software was designed to work with. And yes, I have installed Windows 98 before and understand the errors. Often there aren't many, but Windows 98 was made before a SD Drive. Oh, and your drive has to be in FAT32 because that is the proper format of Windows 98. You can use FAT16, but FAT32 beats FAT16 by a spread. The read is faster. Windows 98 was a nexus of upgrading Hard Drive Speed as Windows 7 is the upgrade to Windows Core speed compilation. Windows 2000 was the NTFS change over. I think Windows 98 will install with a NTFS, but the speed has errors because modifications were made for it to work at higher speed standards for the upgrades. They kept previous formatting systems because some drives were incompatible for the newer format. They worked well for those previous formats. Though slower. Understanding the original design flow system of a program is key into changing its nature. Also, there is another trick you can try using DOS. In those days we had options open to us. We had ways to use DOS to force what we wished to happen. See, the other thing the installation system was designed to also work with DOS as an handler. In the days of DOS, there was a way of writing scripts which we called batch files to force animity. and the older computers set-up with DOS thereby in with an identified HD had a batch file called AUTOEXEC.BAT. Usually, we engaged them from FLOPPY drives. If you could remaster a THUMB drive in place to start-up with MS-DOS with an AUTOEXEC and have the BATCH file forceably recognize the SD card as the C:\ Drive and have the .com for recognizing a CD drive all you got to do is start-up to the FLASH STICK and use is "CD D:\" and type "DIR /P" to find the installation file. You type it as you see it. it will be a .COM file you want to find. Dos was designed to find and locate a AUTOEXEC.BAT file on its own drive for assigning drive ALLOCATION as well as motherboard drive assigning so if you cannot get your SD card to be assigned, perhaps threw this method you can. The AUTOEXIC bat table is very open, once I even formatted my own memory sticks as a bit of a joke and assigned it a DRIVE and had the contents of a FLOPPY copied to it. I can assure you the positive side while having lesser in memory, any process ran faster including the dos scandisk program. DOS is the most bending programming system as ancient as it is. Windows 98 has its own AUTOEXEC for running process too as the running system of Windows 98 is half and half about. Maybe a bit more than Windows 95 by a tiny bit.

+phreeze83 Neither do you. There's absolutely nothing special about this video at all. That's the whole point of an SATA to IDE adapter; to do exactly this. I'd like to see him run Vista from an MFM drive. Now _that_ would be impressive.
He picked up on your sarcasm. That was the entire point of the comment. The sarcasm implied that it was easy to install an operating system on an SSD, and his response to that was that it wasn't with an older OS.
Now before you all assume that i went and willy nilly pirated this copy of Windows, let me just drive the point home that not only did i use myself a legitimate CD to install my Windows 98, i actually have myself A cErtiFICate of AUthenticity.
Yeah, turning DMA on probably would have made it boot hella faster. Would have needed chipset drivers for that, and since the system is Intel, that would probably have been easy.
I also noticed that the hard drive only had a 40-pin IDE cable, and not a 80-pin connector cable. That can really help with transfer speeds if the controller can support the higher speeds.
The Dell P2-400 had a BX chip set and only supported Ultra DMA/33 through the south bridge, A 30 pin cable should work just as well as an 80 pin cable in this system...

@@TheLowshares Sorry but I have less than 1 hour of interaction with Windows 3.x on all my life. My first PC has Win98 and it was upgraded to Win98 SE a couple of months later. So Win95 was the really oldest system that I used/installed.
It's right...
yeah windows 8.1 is the best for the mean time only if you get all the potential updates(fix issues) . . . windows 10 has more issues yet but I think in the future it will be next.
oh my god its EVEN NOISIER!
I lost my shit
Did you find your shit? Lol
Nah, it's way gone. Probably for the better.
That's unfortunate. Well I lost my shit a few days ago but recently found it in the toilet. I said "you piece of shit!' and on its way down the drain it went. That was a terrible joke... I'm ashamed of myself 😢
I make that terrible joke all the time when I feel constipated and have to go at the same time. I am always like "Come on you piece of shit!", I'm lame.
Dakota Wray It means he laughed as hard as he could XD
˜It takes 9 years to install and a 6 weeks to boot˜ dude it makes me laugh out loud hahahahaha. And that sound of CD driver opening man, it makes me wonder and fells like back to the 2000 years.

Oh thank God I am not the only one in 2020....
Hi
it's 2020 90's nostalgia yay
Nope it also happened in 2022 cause I brought you here again!
Hi.
I use still Windows 98. Can I play the Battlefield 1 open beta with it? Because Windows 98 is newer than WW1.
no because win98 has no backwards compability.
you might need DOS as your operating system
Yes
Nop, you cant. W98 cant play future.
maby with a virtual machine ...
Simon Kemmer Maybe with a time machine?
that cpu fan sounds like a 1973 chrysler new yorker with 700,000 k on it. lol
+Patrick O'Neill Yeah...I've got a molex-plug fan that always makes my Windows 2000 machine run too cold. I actually want to wire up a switch to it to turn it on and off as needed, because otherwise all I hear is an idling jumbo jet all the time...I've had louder machines but the only time I appreciate the noise is playing an old, buggy Windows 98 game called Jetfighter 4: Fortress America.
+killthemusic man you kill me

as if most any cars besides a few diesels can hit that mileage lol
its like this... chrysler had some winners, they had some losers. most of them though, you do the required maintenance and itll just keep going.
i have my 95 grand with the 318, shes haggard inside, rust spot on my door, bent antenna, wipers are busted, need to change my power steering hose. but dude, look underneath? awesome shape. i just need to do a top end overhaul on the engine(gaskets, plenum, water pump, timing chain etc...)
but lets be honest, as far as im concerned the absolute best car brands are as follows:
chrysler
GM
nissan
toyota
and to be honest, my two absolute favorite is nissan and Chrysler.
im just a chrysler fanboy, i know they have their flaws. i cant like ford. i just cant lol
Let's get this electrostatic sensitive component, wiggle it in my hand, touching every part of it, and drop it multiple times on a woollen carpet!
isnt that what they do? LMAO
I love the way he puts it in the anti-static bag at 2 minutes after dropping it several times
Woolen carpet would be no problem but if it is synthetic then that would be really bad.
If you didn't notice he was actually poking fun at people who comment stuff like this. Lmao.

To improve the speed of the harddisk, you could try and enable DMA in the hardware options in Windows 98. I know it really sped up my CDRom drives.

I don't think the internet will become a huge thing. It's gonna be gimmick.
Heard of that thing called AOL? Probably just ANOTHER gimmick from Microsoft or something.
A fun experiment to do indeed! I'd love to see how fast old software like Windows 98 runs on new top notch hardware.
From a lack of drivers, it will run terribly.
came back for laughs. the esd bag at 2:00 always cracks me up
good pfp
17:35 Trust me, an IDE from that era boots way faster on a clean Windows 98 installation. Mine boots in 20 seconds with a 6 GB drive with Win 98
ikr, maybe the adapter reduce bunch speed, or maybe he should try to disable network and floppy seek boot
This is what i was thinking. The ide to sata probably bottle necked it a lot.
Im pretty sure it was because it was setting up for two color mode. I don't think this was an accurate speed test.
I love your dubbing youre crazy in a positive way!

Let watch these temps plummet!
*10 degree rise in 2 seconds*
That tended to happen with old systems when you ran them with the case wide open. Not only is the case fan obviously dying, it's also not providing any flow through the heat sink whatsoever with the case sides taken off.
At least do the true old school thing and stick a box fan up next to that dinosaur! Sheesh!
@@weaselsworld yep. Ive got an early Vista tower that does this. It killed the CPU eventually. If you wiggle the cooler the right way it boots, tried reseating CPU, still does it.
i myself went back 18 years! Thanks for my struggled years.
This video is so goofy. I love it
Those who disliked the video never enjoyed a computer, they are just jealous how the narrator enjoys. Glad to see someone doing the exact things I do while getting bored at the time of installing a really slow OS or software. 🤘💟
The amount of dislikes just prove Druaga1 was ahead of his time. Look at the ratios now. Also, I had forgotten how much he actually "toned it down" over the years though, haha.
are you crazy? are you outta your mind?

And with a piece of foil and some rubber bands you can convert any CPU into a homemade SEC cartridge package, then use the same application methods above (EIF) to fit it in the slot.
I think better to wait 20th series to install, 1080 will be bottleneck in this beast
that fan sounds like a f'ed up weed eater lol cool video tho

You should had done Windows 95, since it's 20th anniversary was last week.

Keep up the videos and Ur really funny enjoyed Ur content I subbed
I did get a good laugh out of this, found it to be quit comical, I play around with stuff like this just for fun as well
i died when you brought the giant fan XD
The funny thing about Win98 starting up in 16 colors or even monochrome is that the startup screen is 256 colors. (Granted, I believe that bitmap is stored in like 300x240 or something weird like that. The computer stretches it out to a 4:3 mode.)
This video is an absolute gem amongst all YT tech videos!
lol, I thought that you measured in Celsius and the Heatsink was cooking Hot, can someone pls calculate in Celsius?
+Alex Herb
About 54 degrees Celsius at its peak and like 36 at lowest.
+Rat Face THX😅
Alex Herb No problem :).
+Alex Herb Easy mode is remembering a couple important numbers
-40c=-40f
0c= 32f
38c=100f
100c=212f
or every 40c is 72f
+Alex Herb Also apparently the max operating temp for that CPU according to CPU World is 75C.

is slow because you are using an ide adapter, the bus is low very low.
It is slow cuz he is using a cheap ssd without any dram cache 😂😂. Ide interface can handle 1gbps i believe. , Sata 1 was 1.5gbps , sata 2 was 3gbps & sata 3 is 6gbps & pcie gen 3 x4 is 32gbps & gen 4 is 64gbps!
@@KuntalGhosh 133MB/s
It’s slow because of the SATA to IDE adaptor
@@jonchapman6821 133MB/sec=1.064gbps .. & that is still fast enough if the ssd had dram cache & i am not sure about the performance loss in ide to sata adapter too. Ssd on a pc makes big difference only bcz of the random read writes not bcz of the sequential read write.. ur windows loads as hundreds of small files not a single large file and hard drives have very very slow random read writes even modern drives barely do 1mb/sec .. while ssds even sata ones does couple a hundred mb/sec if it comes with dram & thats why 860 evo is one of the fastest ssd to boot windows & on par with 970 evo in booting windows and starting applications while many other nvme drives fall behind bcz of their slower random performance & dram less ssds can sometimes become slower than harddrive when u copy large files.
@@KuntalGhosh not got enough time right now to read all that ☝🏻 no disrespect intended.
Those SATA to IDE adaptors have quite a lot of work to do and tend to max out at about 33MB/s
The rest, I’ll read that soon and get back to you.
Loved this video the first time I watched it. Returning now as I consider getting a 5.25 hotswap bay for my pentium 4 that runs windows98se. Grab some 120gb SSDs just to have a decent compact ability to have unlimited space on a windows 98 machine. I might wait until I actually fill the 80gb in it though. Currently loading disc images off a 128 usb thumbdrive for isos. Has been a fun project. Hardest part was having some Dell OEM P4 accept 98se.
Thank you and thank you for the inspiration.

it's 3:15 am and im sitting here watching some guy install windows 98 onto an ssd...

This video has me smiling alot. Oh the good ol' days, fighting those ide cables.
so microsoft had the idea for a 'netflix' system in 1998. Nice.
@csgo I think they knew it would be big but this was at a time when most Internet connections were way too slow to stream standard definition video.
WOW YOU CAN INSTALL OPERATING SYSTEMS ON AN SSD? HOLY SHIT 1 MIL VIEWS ON THE WAY
"what the fuck is wrong with this human?"
you don't seem to have a clue about old operation systems and compability with modern hardware such as an ssd.
+phreeze83 he was being sarcastic
+phreeze83 Neither do you. There's absolutely nothing special about this video at all. That's the whole point of an SATA to IDE adapter; to do exactly this. I'd like to see him run Vista from an MFM drive. Now _that_ would be impressive.
He picked up on your sarcasm. That was the entire point of the comment. The sarcasm implied that it was easy to install an operating system on an SSD, and his response to that was that it wasn't with an older OS.
In basic training my drill sergeant called me Windows 98
Now before you all assume that i went and willy nilly pirated this copy of Windows, let me just drive the point home that not only did i use myself a legitimate CD to install my Windows 98, i actually have myself A cErtiFICate of AUthenticity.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some just plugging fan headers while pc is on. Yeah, that's you
Oh Christ. Oh Christ. Oh Christ.
I can feel the SSD being ruined by the static electricity just within the first 45 seconds of you video.
Nah
needs dma enabled and a proper display adapter driver and it's 4K ready
Yeah, turning DMA on probably would have made it boot hella faster. Would have needed chipset drivers for that, and since the system is Intel, that would probably have been easy.
Thats what I felt. Either a DMA issue or the IDE to SATA adapter might have been a bottleneck.
