- Time to get some more parts in the New Windows 98 PC!
Wow, that Soyo USB card sucked. I'm glad I didn't get around to putting it in the first time. If I find another better Front USB solution I'll be looking to put that in. It would be cool if I could find a hub that I could plug into the CompUSA card I have.
While being completely out of the realm of being reasonable "period" that Gigabit card will be really useful. I do bulk data transfers to and from my server frequently so I can archive games or get data from it I need for a project. So that is going to be immensely useful.
(PS, I'm not meaning to release this near LGR's video. I recorded this last Friday. Unlucky timing.)

Everytime I open up my Windows 98 PC I cut myself, everytime.
i still have a scar on the back of my hand from removing a 5.25" bay plastic cover. hand flying on razor sharp rail inside the bay.
I cut myself on my case I bought in 2016, those things are always sharp.
i always get cut and never notice. i wonder why you never notice it. maybe it cuts nerves or something?

Did the exact same thing popping out a panel on my recent Win98 build, ha. Did not even notice until that moment of "why is there blood on this card? Oh."
Decided to just get rid of spinning hard drives on that build as well, replaced with SD cards. I figure if I'm needing a beefy HDD that isn't period-correct anyway, SD interfaces/cards are so cheap and convenient it makes too much sense to ignore. However, I'll always kinda miss the sounds a spinning drive makes, that's for sure.
For the first video of this computer I was somewhat locked in to using a spinning disk drive. This Seagate was actually a Goodwill find that I had got before the WD drive I originally put in there. I felt that the packing wasn't "90's" enough on this one so I got the other drive after. So I figured I may as well use both drives anyway. Eventually I plan on getting an SD adapter and modifying a blank drive plate to access it from the front so I can easily swap the bootable drive for other OS's.
Well atleast, you won't have to worry bout the hard drive getting really noisy over time. To the point that it's sound of your hard disk screaming. Lol
Yeah it makes sense to stick with classic drives for this build, especially in that first part! Really is an admirably accurate machine.
as all old skool pc techs should know, a successful upgrade or repair always requires a blood sacrifice (or at least a blood offering).
I would hope the amount of cuts and scratches I've gotten from various cases and cards in the past year alone should be enough sacrifice.
I didn't know making a Windows 98 PC requires blood sacrifice.
Reloaded2111 I've bled for an ide cable for my floppy drive on trashy pentium 75 desktop :_(

adam fitzpatrick of course you did, because IDE cables definetly are for floppy drives. And a Pentium 75 is definitely a shitty processor. You don't have any right to comment on this channel, you moron. Or you don't until you look up what you actually want to say.
adam fitzpatrick I don't want to insult anyone but what you wrote is just plain incorrect, and makes you sound like you've never seen an IDE cable an a floppy drive cable side by side. An IDE cable has 40 or 80 wires, while a floppy drive cable has only 34. Also IDE is a whole different story on how it works, while the floppy drive gets controlled via the floppy drive cable, the IDE hard drive only transmits and receives data over the IDE cable. I know it does not have anything to do with your bleeding but it just annoys me that people don't do research before they write something

Try loosening the bracket on that PCI card. Sometimes the screw holes in the bracket have enough free play that you might be able to adjust it to fit better in the slot.
If you jump through the Video, you can hear the CPU Fan increasing in RPM. Aaah the good old jet engine times waking up your parents at night...
haha i have jet engine fans on my budget starter pc, when i finally turn my pc off after a day of gaming or working i can hear the abcense of sound on my room.
And those high-speed CD-drives which sounded also like a jet engine.
I remember my first PC back in '98 where the fans were on all the time. I was blown away, pardon the pun, when I got a later PC where smart technology was coming into fruition where the fans would only come on when needed.

Don't worry about not being period correct with the storage I had 500gb of storage back in 2001, on my Windows 98 machine. The joys of a custom build is you can always go overkill...

About your GamePort issue on your SoundBlaster Live!
The reason why the Gravis GamePad Pro did not work... it did work! You used the wrong mode.
On the back of the GamePad there is a switch for legacy Player 1, P2 or Gravis IP. On GrIP the Gamepad
sends weird commands back to the gameport which look like random button mashing.
I recommend you to use either the legacy mode or install the GrIP Software.
And I recommend the Gravis Profiler of the Terminator Gamepad. It seems more stable under 98 than the original 95 software.
For the SideWinder... no clue.
My SW ForceFeedback Pro doesn't like it at all, if there are more than one Gameport or Soundcards in the system.
Getting this thing to work in 98/ME is some kind of magic. It works on my Packard Bell and I have no frikkn clue why.
But it might have to do something with MIDI capabilities since the SideWinders use MIDI for advanced commands to the peripherial and the system.
So, good luck getting SideWinders to work. :D

and even better than 10 dark mode, being sent by the sticky keys shortcut to the control panel with dark mode on was pure eye torture
plus some really old window designs didn't work with dark mode, ruining eyes even more

I would kill for a computer like that, reminds me of the one I had during the 90s which just got scrapped for parts or given away over the years. Why didn't we keep these things instead of regretting it and buying it all again for inflated prices by the people who did keep things around.
I got all of mines from the trash. Just built a Pentium III system, now I have to install XP on it so I can surf the internet lol.

If you have an x58 motherboard, DONT SELL IT!!!!!! These are the last good Mobos for vintage gaming, DOS bootable, win 3.1, sound support included, internal speaker or sound blaster (you can put an ISA card in the old PCI slot with a riser)

I always have a soft spot for Windows 98, bcos my first experience with a computer was through this OS. We had loads of fun games on the laptop even though the graphic card was not that good😂

Im glad you showed the driving test at the end. That used to be the bane of my existence on the PS1 port.
When you were installing the FAN in the cabinet I realized that the parts were still powered by the LEDs of the network card, careful handling so as not to burn the parts, it is ideal to cut off the power completely. Congratulations on the upgrade, I really enjoyed it.

Nice Video. I really wanted that InWin case in the early 2000's. Your frustration with Creative's drivers is genuine. Had that same keyboard too, loved it, but wish the layout was standard. I would go with some Noctua fans for filming and sanity purposes. Keep up the awesome work.

Your videos bring me back to a great time in my life, when the computer revolution was in full swing and I was the only one in my area with a computer and internet access! All my friends wouldnt follow suit until much later, after 2000! I was literally the only one of all my friends who not only owned a computer but had access to the internet back in 1998! I actually had a computer since 1986, but didn't do anything with that one outside of word processing documents for class in high school and maybe play some very basic DOS games like Leisure Suit Larry. I finally upgraded to a new computer in 1995! I started with Windows 3.1 but soon upgraded that to Windows 95, then finally Windows 98. I kept using Win 98 until I bought another new system in 2002 and was forced to use Windows XP, which I ended up using all the way until 2010!
Loosen the screws on the usb card back plate, they usually have a bit of play to relax the fit.

I'm honestly surprised he was so shocked and appalled that the card was out of spec and didn't fit properly. I've bent and bodged so many cards in because the card was out of spec or the bracket was misshapen or the case was bent it's not even funny.
@@XCVGVCX yup even in modern pc's slightly misshapen card slots are still a problem but mainly with low-budget cases or niche expansion cards
I even had to cut a cheap case because the slot 7 was literally only half as large in the backplane so the nub at the end of the bracket wouldn't slide into the metal underneath the mobo
SteelScooter is correct though often if a card is out of spec loose screws might help but I would recommend actually doing the "no bracket" method due to it only being an internal usb card with no external connectors perhaps with lumps of hot glue or thick wires soldered to the card and back plate to allow slight adjustments just make sure to only connect the wires to ground or cut traces to the unpopulated rear connectors

What good memories that game brings back to me, when I was younger, passing that exam was a task of many repetitions. Too bad that first version isn't in GOG.
Surprisingly, I feel that as hard as that tutorial felt back in the day, it definitely prepared you for the rest of the game. At some point in a level you'd find yourself doing some of those stunts to get away from the cops.

nice cable management. beautiful and clean. its so much nicer to work with a large case. also wanted to say i'm a big fan of your perfectionism. nice to see you not just throwing stuff in there if it doesnt meet your standards. also love that you're using all microsoft accessories. my hands are jacked up from years of games and computers, so ergonomic keyboards are basically pornographic to me.

Dude. That HP ScanJet 4c just brings the whole build together. Every DTP shop in '99 had one. Even multiple ones for spares. Now for the printer (because of course :), there are so many good choices (5L was a favourite), but I would get something with Postscript, period-correct and you can write PS programs!
Oh yeah, and don't worry about your DVD drive, it has a smooth-eject mechanism where it intentionally slows down part-way, I have a Plextor that does the same thing. I guess Emprex, like many, sold rebranded drives!

what does 120gb has to do with 1998 cause of windows? 1998 avarage high hdd was 2.5gb to 6gb then 1999 i started growing fast 10-40gb to 1999 , 2001-2002 was when 120gb started getting into bigger market
Such an amazing couple of videos! kinda feels weird to watch the old tech when i look to the right at my tower (full glass side panel with i7 9700k, rgb h100i, rgb dominator Ram, and msi 2080 ti gaming trio x,) so yea, we have come a looong way in computer tech! nostalgic bit of sim city 2000 on the old systems as well.
All the early computing frustrations are coming back to me ;D
Aw, I remember when I was little I use that exact same Sidewinder controller to play emulated SNES and Sega Genesis games. The button layout on that controller works really well for both. If you're into emulated retro games I highly recommend you get this controller.
I did a lot of PC builds during this period and changing the USB pinouts was common! It also had the possibility of causing damage if you did it wrong. I was happy when they came out with a standard pinout.
I loved my MS sidewinder pad, was always so good to use. Microsoft Motocross Madness 2 with it is a real great experience.
It's crazy to think that all the components in this monster rig, except for the second DVD drive and 5.25" floppy drive, can now be found in a laptop form factor. Again it's crazy to think that many of these components such as a separate graphics card and sound card are now just chipsets built into the motherboard... and now have even more features... and the fact that pretty much all the functionality of the Voodoo card can be replicated with a piece of lightweight software in the form of a glide wrapper. How far we have come in 20 years.

Gorgeous case, I used an inwin a500 for mine because I needed a more compact unit, I opted for the geforce 4 when I upgraded to spread out my range of games, but those voodoo cards are gorgeous, 1998 cutting yourself on the case aesthetic is strong here.

-the GUI version of FDISK would be PartitionMagic by PowerQuest (later Norton). Get it, it's a great tool for DOS and Win9x!
-i've often got SoundBlaster emulation only to work when I've had the card put into the last PCI slot. Maybe because of IRQ sharing, idk, but a friend told me. Just in case you stumble across this issue
-when restarting 98, keep pressing shift. Win98 will reboot without going to BIOS, which speeds things up

Those InWin full towers are SEXY. I loved working with them back in the day when they were new. Built a Pentium Pro server and an Athlon XP system in that exact case.
I have had to bend brackets to make things fit or even ream out mounting holes just enough. It is usually the bottom that is not quite straight or bent enough to rest where the case wants it to.

Growing up and going through this era of computing was truly and genuinely the greatest time of my life. My pc was 300mhz cpu with 4gb hardrive and I though my I was the man lol . I just built a 2700x hero470 water cooled gtx 1080 64mb ram lol. It's just amazing how we have advanced. But I'll always say, windows 98 se was the bomb! None of my buddies has se lol.

Only makes sense if he also has one of those wretched Digital TV to analog RF converter boxes, the ones that (usually) came with their own remote controllers, or an old school camcorder or VCR that he might want to hook up.
An alternative would be one of ATI's models from their All-In-Wonder series -- SVGA adapter, 3D graphics accelerator and TV card all in one. Unfortunately, the included dongle cabling could easily get broken or lost, and if you couldn't obtain a replacement you were SCREWED.
