      @Ladioz Old Internet slang for "Elite" I think it's roots go back to the 1995 movie Hackers, so "1337" -> LEET -> Elite -> Elite Hacker.

  • @heyyitsultima
    @heyyitsultima 2 года назад +132

    Alright now that I've finished:
    I actually had this Antec case back in probably 05-07! Mine was quite worse for wear but it was indeed one of the best cases I ever owned before 2010.
    I loved the captioned titles of the games, each one of them made me chuckle. That's also an incredibly impressive library of games to play on this beautiful machine, and they all run so much smoother than the Pentium system I had at the time ever could. I remember playing Quake 4 at 640x480 with 15-20FPS in the best performing areas and thinking it looked incredible. Never did beat that one!
    This was a super awesome nostalgia trip and honestly I miss this era of computing. Just the installer music alone sent me on a huge wave of nostalgia. They just don't make the experience as cool as it once was anymore. Windows XP was a huge part of my life for way more years than it should have been. Exposed me to a lot of knowledge about computing, and also how stupid I could be with one. I'll never forget tearing the registry apart to learn every bit of how it worked, watching viruses eat my computer alive because I didn't understand basic computer maintenance as a kid and also put my grubby hands on virtually any download link I could find at the time haha.
    Thank you Shelby, from the bottom of my heart, for this incredible video

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  2 года назад +20

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! I may have had a bit of fun with those subtitles for the games. Quake 4 was almost in the video but I had to cut it for time(Doom 3 and Prey have the gory 00's shooters well covered), but it's worth finishing still! It feels like a more refined Doom 3 to me.
      I complete get all that and I'm glad to make something that can trigger those happy memories. I can tell you from a similar experience that you won't get NT/XP's nice plug'n play drivers in Windows 98 by just copying the System 32 folder...lots of good naive times were had with computers in this era!

    You just ran through my childhood here. I was lucky enough to have a crazy father who spent all of his spare money on a beast comp and I'd play it when I used to visit him on the weekends. A lot of our bonding came out of him encouraging me to keep playing Doom 3 even though I was terrified of it. He passed in 2012 and I often think about how he never got to see the games that are around now. He loved Flight Simulator and I just know he'd take out a loan to be build a PC that was able to run the latest release of it. Anyway, this was a nice trip down memory lane. Also, he had the same exact speakers. Thanks for this! Subscribed!

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  2 года назад +25

      I actually tried to get a ZBoard, it was complicated to find a 2004 model that was actually new though. They were independent when they first launched but were bought out by Steelseries who added their branding to it afterwards. Then even later models changed to have the round Vista orb Windows key. So finding a true first gen ZBoard that was still unused in box was too difficult to make happen for this video unfortunately. But maybe some day I'll check it out now that I don't need to be as strict about when the parts were made.

I'm still using one on my main setup, purchased it second hand CIB 15 years ago or so. Still works flawlessly and feels great. The little screen still comes in handy for displaying MSI Afterburner stats and the time. Never cleaned it either, gonna be real satisfying when I finally get to it.

Just play the game and enjoy the old times without being distracted in middle , it's like a therapy or art in a sense .

    I went all out with my XP build a few years ago making it my 'end of an era' build using the newest and the best possible hardware to officially support XP. Ended up with a 4790K, a 4 gig GTX 960, Samsung 850 Evo, blah blah blah. The whole idea being to send XP off on the highest note possible and also to ensure that I could run even the latest XP games at their max settings to be able to truly see just how good games of that era could look if you had a system powerful enough to run them maxed out at the time. The irony is that it's more powerful than some entry level modern systems and some of the games I play in excess of a 1000+ FPS lol... But for games like Doom 3, Quake 4, and so forth, the engine they are built off of can actively and evenly use up to four threads. So having a multi-core platform does help especially when you max the settings out.

    I didn't know how to react when I saw you play Unreal Tournament 2004 in this ol' beast PC. It was one of the few games I remember playing from my childhood. I loved every second of this video. Really grateful for bringing back so many memories.

    I remember my brother having two of those XFX 6800GS cards in SLI. Was certainly cool at the time, and for some games it was awesome. The cooler is fantastic and was a friends choice for his Q6600 back in the day - 3.6GHz without any issues. You should absolutely get an X-Fi XtremeGamer (or XtremeMusic) sound card and an AGEIA PhysX card to make this totally pimpin'.
    If you want a nice gaming laptop of this vintage I can highly recommend a cheap XPS M1710 (with RGB lights!), the Precision M90 (same machine with Quadro FX equivalent graphics cards and a more serious look), or the Inspiron 9400/E1705 (same machines with lower specced GPUs available and no dock connector, although you can install the beefier graphics cards). Having a Core 2 Duo laptop with a 17" 1920x1200 display and a GeForce Go 7950 GTX for Windows XP/7 is nice.
    EDIT: Definitely would like to see a PhysX video - I remember the PCI cards and they're dirt cheap now. They seemed cool at the time (of course) but I never did try one of the dedicated cards.

    Next video: Repairing the 2004 PSU. Caps are cheap and you can get high quality Japanese caps from Mouser, Digikey etc. Then do an update to this PC and fit it in with the special cables. Up-vote this comment because it needs to happen :-D

    Oh, that Microsoft keyboard. I had one. It would drop connectivity frequently and repeat keystrokes A LOT. 😂 I imagine that having a different wireless mouse by its side makes it even more glitchy!
    Try the original mouse from the kit if you can. It's really not that bad.

      It’s usually the usb interrupt - if it’s ps/2 you usually won’t get that problem (but could also be the old school wireless because it was pretty rough back then)

    I absolutely loved everything about this video. You have gained +1 subscriber! I really appreciate your attention to detail, especially the authenticity side of things. I'm glad you installed the sound card before the OS so we got to hear the elusive XP setup theme! PS. That's a mighty fine collection of old CDs you have there on the shelf! I think I even spotted the original RCT from 1999, one of my all-time favorites!! If you were to give this setup an appraisal for the time period, how much would you say it would cost?

    Here's a great idea for a video
    How about replacing the capacitors in the PSU with solid state ones, as well as maybe checking some other hardware for similar issues and fixing them? Call it a Great Plague Cleanup or something
    Edit: watched the video to the end, i'm glad you decided to acknowledged the issue. Left the comment because i was kinda partially disappointed that toy just tossed the PSU aside instead of fixing it, since it looks way better than modern ones

      For laptops, it a sort of palm rejection when typing. So it should be solved by just turning of this setting. Noticed this on my laptop and immediately searched through every setting to get rid of that “feature.”
