Well from what I recall, 5 1/4” were “floppy discs” and 3 1/2” were “micro discs” but because everyone had been used to calling squares or memory discs encased in plastic “floppy discs” they just kept calling them “floppy” until even the manufacturers begin to call them “3 1/2” floppy discs” even though there was obviously nothing floppy about them save for the film the memory writes to.
i'm so grateful that youtube recommended this video, didn't stop smiling and think about my old pcs. Thank you so much for this, one of the rare videos on youtube that i didn't speed up to 1.5x ou 2x
Man, this sure brings back some memories! You might not want to connect your relatively “fast” 7200RPM HDD into the same IDE-channel with your optical drive though. Most optical drives of that era only support up to UDMA-33 transfers while your HDD and motherboard support up to UDMA-100. The entire IDE-channel transfer speed is determined by the slowest device in the channel so your 7200RPM drive now gets a very noticeable performance hit. This was a very common mistake back in the day so some motherboard manufacturers started to clearly label their bundled IDE-cables as “CD-ROM” for the UDMA-33 cable and “HDD” for the UDMA-100 cable. The recommended way to connect your drives was HDDs in the primary IDE-channel using UDMA-100 cable and optical drives in the secondary IDE-channel using either UDMA-33 or UDMA-100 cable which ever happened to be at hand. You could also leave the jumpers at the default CS (Cable Select) setting if you’re not building any unusual configurations. In this setting the drive at the end of the IDE-cable will be considered as master and the one connected in the middle connector will be considered as slave, regardless of how many drives you are connecting. I seem to recall some benchmarks actually showing a slight increase in disk performance using the CS setting but don’t quote me on this. It’s been a long time. Some ideas for improvement; If you would like to have a large HDD storage in a period correct way (for Tualatin era) you could try to find an old PCI IDE RAID card and 4 (or more) period correct 60-80GB drives. I remember some people did this back in the day and it was darn impressive! Oh did I wish I could afford it myself. For the ultimate Tualatin experience you could try to find the legendary Asus TUSL2-C motherboard and unleash the beast by some overclocking goodness! For the maximum fun factor you might need to look for some highly overclock-able RAM too especially if you’re overclocking a Pentium3 that runs 133MHz FSB at stock. Back in 2002 I built a cheap Tualatin gaming rig from used parts and even though it wasn’t the cutting edge technology anymore it was still insanely powerful! I had a Tualatin based Celeron “Tualeron” overclocked somewhere around 1.7GHz with a huge aftermarket HSF. My Radeon 8500 64MB DDR graphics card had an AMD K6-2 CPU cooler bolted on the GPU and HUGE memory heatsinks cut out from an old Pentium2 passive heatsink! And of course it was volt-modded and overclocked to the absolute max. I even had a similar full-size ATX case like the one in the video with 4 powerful Papst case fans but it wasn’t too loud because I effectively sound-insulated the entire case with materials bought from the local car parts store. This rig used to run in circles around the early top-of-the-line Pentium4 Northwoods of the day that were outrageously more expensive than the old Pentium3 based Celeron! Had I built this system a year earlier from brand new parts it would’ve been even more phenomenal. It was my main computer till September 2005. It even used to run Half-Life 2 quite nicely with decent quality settings. Don’t expect to see that happening with the Voodoo5 though. On the other hand it might be fun to try :) Sometimes I still feel the urge to build a new Tualatin rig and do it even better than the first time. Just for the sake of nostalgia…I think building a PC used to be more fun and interesting those days; so much more challenging and rewarding than now. By the way you could always go for a period correct PSU and simply recap it if the caps have gone bad. Seeing how you did the Voodoo card it should be a piece of cake for you. IMHO it would add greatly to the nostalgia factor keeping it as period correct as practically possible; the loud fan noises, the HDD grinding and all, would be like a time machine for every sense :)
Nah, i had a 50G Quantum Fireball (biggest i could afford) in '98 and it wasnt an uncommon size for new. if you were cashed up much bigger was practical.
if you were going to be picky btw, what IS wrong for '98 is the Voodoo 5 - it wasnt released until 2000. Period correct would be the Voodoo 2 i have in the cupboard
This was so beautiful. So many good memories and honestly i’ve never seen a top full maximum setup for that kind of pc, in those times were pretty much a rare thing to see specially the “gaming” setup

Oh my, this video brings so much back to memory. I was a teen ager in the late 90s and 100% of what was in this video is what drew me into computers back then.
Why would that make you sad? All those untouched parts finally getting used after 20 years instead of rotting away in storage or a landfill. Wonderful. Makes me want to dig out some of my old components and do this myself.
@@nocilol3000 Preservation, the more of the items that are opened, the less common it is to find new components, items that are 20 years old that aren't being sold anymore aren't that common anymore, so it's why I feel kinda sad seeing precious brand new tech being used where today's technology puts this stuff to shame and it's seen as a relic.
Normally I would also cringe at someone opening something that has been sealed (and thus well-preserved) for so long. However, unlike all those people out there who do it just for the "unboxing" experience, this guy actually gave these components the life they have never had. And thus, unlike with most other video's, I do not mind him unboxing these relics.

Very nostalgic, I remember building computers pretty much like this one. Just one observation, as far as I remember, back in 97/98 5.25” floppy disks/drives weren’t really being used anymore. I remember using a ZIP Drive in this “era” (had one with parallel interface, I think I still have it somewhere in the house), just before CD-R and RW completely killed ZIP Drives. At least here in Brazil (and we were a few steps behind the US due to high prices of hardware). Anyway, very good video, I collect some things and hardware IS not one of them, but I appreciate things from the past so well taken care!

Fr dude!
What sound is that?
GrandeGio What do you think it is? It’s the start-up sound for Windows 98, second only to the sound of Windows 95.

Amazing build, and a lot of effort (and investment!) put into this video. Very well done, and very entertaining - thank you!
I watched this in 144p just for the effect
Back then the standard was 480p boio
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaaa!!! I hope the effect was more than u were expecting ;-)
ahhahahah xd
Awesomeness Plays for pc at that time? 480p is low res. Common is 1024x768 at 100hz. And if I remember correctly, year 2000 I was using 24" 1200p crt monitor. And that's the reason why most gamer back then were very late to adopt LCD screen. LCD were Low res and low fps.
well, i mean still MOST were using CRT's until like maybe(?) windows 7. But yeah now the standard is 720 or 768 or mostly 1080/1440

This is what I call... NOSTALGIA
Can't be nostalgic for me since I was born in 2001
Greetings from South Korea. The magnificent Voodoo 5500 was my favorite VGA of all time. Around 2000 it was so fun to build a new PC. Thank you for taking me back to the era.
1993 was a pretty awesome year for pc-gaming. Sim City 2000, Doom, Myst, X-Wing, Syndicate, Rebel Assault... the list goes on.

Hey guys, I've been searching for a game for a while now. Around the 2000-2005 years. It was a shooter, with like demons or zombies but some of them had wings. And I remeber when you entered the map it was like a mental assylum and it was a stone bridge in front of you to reach the assylum, can someone help me to find this game? it was a little bit gore from what I remember

A tech video in 2018 that uses the phrase “newer floppy drive”...
I was surprised he even bothered to put in the 5¼ floppy. I remember it being completely obsolete by '98.
3d printed save icon
@@bonnywarrior I believe the first two games he tested required the 5¼ bay.
But yes, even back in '97 and '98 it was considered mainly obsolete, save for a few older applications.
Takes me back. Though I didnt see my all time favourite line... 'It is now safe to turn off your computer'
Some ideas for improvement;
If you would like to have a large HDD storage in a period correct way (for Tualatin era) you could try to find an old PCI IDE RAID card and 4 (or more) period correct 60-80GB drives.
ThePuuFa sounds like u need a RUclips channel if u don’t have one already.

120 GB drive is way too big for 1998.
I remember mine having 4gb hdd
Martin Ruvalcaba pfft lol my dad had a 2gb hdd, and that was comparable to 500gb hdd today
He should've gone for SCSI 15k drive and controller from the era.

You have no idea how this video made me feel wonderful about my first job, I put together a lot of PCS from that time. In that decade not everyone could put together a configuration as top as this, it was the PC of dreams that year. Thank you very much for this video, your idea of using only new products in the box was something of great creativity.

Oh my, this video brings so much back to memory. I was a teen ager in the late 90s and 100% of what was in this video is what drew me into computers back then.
A part of me has died seeing all that new stuff from 20 years ago being opened.

Man really takes me back. We had a windows 98 computer, but it was in the living room, as back then computers were hella expensive and it was unheard of to have your on PC let alone a laptop!

I had an aftermarket case probably around Windows XP days which had that, and I thought it was cool even then. I still have the tray even though I've ditched the case, in the event I ever want to mount a motherboard outside a case for testing.
That's what I was thinking, my mind was blown when I saw that lol
Love that case. I built an Athlon based Win 98SE system not so long ago. Getting it up and running was troublesome, but worth it. Helps to have all the drivers beforehand.
