Found materialize on my own a few months ago, used it to turn a normal map I had into a displacement map (which in hindsight, I could’ve just used vector displacement, but hey whatevs) and figured that’s about all it’s good for. I am VERY glad to find this video and see what it’s capable of.

It can only save in 8 bit color (that creates banding, doesn't have smooth transition between shades of gray). 16 bit is the way to go with height/displacement (it has more color info). Maybe in the future that could be fixed.

There were lot of apps like that for a long long time. Even Substance Alchemist has this (better) fictional, and before they had an app just for that called Substance B2M. Literally Bitmap-to-Material. Jesus. And it's been 10 years ago.

Materialize is pretty dank good. But it's not new, I have known and used since 2 years and it's first commit on GitHub was 4 years ago. It's made in Unity, which means I can actually easily fork it to modify it (which I wanna but haven't gotten time yet). My biggest issue is that it doesn't map anything to alpha channel.
This app has been out for like 20 years BTW ;) (versions of it, this may be a new clone of the old system as fundamentally we create almost everything differently than we used to)

If you need professional 16bit then just use a photoshop batch action to approximate 16bit versions then fine tune according to project scale

Instead of saving the maps solely, just save the project and you'll get all your maps in the folder.

I used both. Sampler is better. Got delighting, make it tile filter, blending other materials like moss, snow onto the material you created.

Nope! I moved on to TouchDesigner and it’s much easier to apply those there, and it’s much lighter on GPU/CPU

i can do the same in substance designer or substance alchemist, designer gives a lot of control over the textures
But substance is not free. Surely it's better, but also not cheap.
