About 1970, I went out in a jonboat with a three other guys to Quantico Creek in Virginia. One of the guys was Chief Gibson, the base game warden. He took us to a small, shallow bay where it seemed like there must have been a hundred sturgeon spawning. It was nothing short of spectacular as they swam around just below the surface, bumping the bottom of the boat. It was a sight I'll never forget. They used to spawn in the Rappahannock and in Fredericksburg, the story goes that the last one caught there had gotten landlocked or stuck between some boulders. A guy in Normandy Village threw a rope around the big fish and pulled it out with a tractor. That was in the late 1950s, maybe 1960.
