I am just going to throw this out there. Not at all related to sturgeon, but directly to Eric Swanson so I feel it is pertinent. Long story short, fishing buoy ten with my 5 year old last August. We hook a nice chinook (mid to upper teens upriver bright) and I am allowing him to play the fish with the rod in the holder as he is not quite ready to hold the rod with a nice chinook. Fish runs into Eric's gear. Totally my fault for not controlling the fish a bit more. Instead of being a jack*** as he legitimately had a right to be in that moment, Eric has his client freespool the line so we can land the fish. He and his crew lost at least 15 minutes of fishing time in a decent bite. This is where it gets cool. His clients and he root my son on and make him feel like a rockstar. Not only does one of Eric's client's take some AWESOME photos of my son and I, but he gets my number and texts them all to me....wait there is more....Eric then has me cut the line, and after several attempts by me, refuses to allow me to return the gear (flasher, lead, hootchie, etc) as he says he has plenty of gear. Tells me to keep it (even after I Facebook stalk him to try to return it). But, here is the cool thing. My son is STILL talking about that fish and experience. Literally. And Eric allowed a father and son to have that experience together. So, instead of my son having a bitter taste in his mouth around guides and other fisherman in a challenging situation, he believes we can all work together and cool things can happen. For the record, I have never met Eric and have no affiliation with him. I enjoy the Addicted Fishing site, and I just wanted to take a minute to give an honest review of the man that was featured in today's video. Thanks, Eric. Sorry if this violates what this particular video is trying to show, but this site is about "entertaining, education, and inspiring"....and I felt like this fits in to the mission.
Eric, this is just golden advice. Thank you so much. Very rare for such an experienced and successful guide to show to all his secrets of success. You are a rare one.
Awesome video! Never been sturgeon fishing, or done any fishing on the Columbia. Always wanted to. The old man and I recently got a boat but are still learning, so that anchoring info at the beginning was perfect. Only trolled so far. Thanks for all the info that you guys are so willing to share!
I finally caught my first 10 footer last September... it was incredible pulling up a sea cow 🐄 that big! Thanks for the sturgeon video! Hopefully you’ll get to film some giant heifers for future uploads!
The last time I chased sturgeon, Clint and Charles were fishing near by and put on a clinic for my son, his friend and me. Squid was the hot ticket and Clint told me that the Asian markets are the place to get them. Thanks guys. It is always a pleasure to fish next to such nice dudes.
Swanson is a great guide...went out with him salmon fishing in May 2021 and although we got skunked it was a great learning/bs session...I recommend Eric S to everyone
Yes I have been sturgeon fishing before but it's been quite a few years I mostly use smelt and squid mixture at times but I always like to go to the gel sent for sturgeon fishing
I live in eastern Washington I have the Clearwater river and the snake river at my back door so I catch sturgeon All the time and steelhead and salmon All the time
Thanks for your input I live real close in South Dakota to the Missouri River and they got a lot of white sturgeon in northern pike and at least I know how to fish farm this year I'm fishing for some sturgeon it's catch and release here but at least I get the experience thanks much
Nice vid. You guys have a great fishery up there, lots of Dino’s. I fish the CA Delta and our techniques are a bit different (ie reel down method, no squid). Gonna try some of your set up. Thanks for sharing.
I’m going to go for the first time this week. Hopefully I end up with some really pretty fish and a sweet video posted on my channel. Thanks a ton for the advice
Eric, Nice video with good info. Haven't fished sturgeon in quite a few years. I have a few safety reminders regarding anchoring. Lots of boats have been sucked under by the current pull on the anchor line. Coast guard recommends 7 feet of anchor for every foot of depth I believe. In heavy current you need to be careful about just dumping the anchor and ty ing it off. Need to hold after the ball is thrown to make sure the current doesnt suck the ball under and then pull your bow down . Saw it happen on a 21 foot thunder jet. Fortunately the guy handling the line had not tied it off and just let go of the line, they lost their anchor and ball. ( found it later down stream). Lastly, would have been nice for you to show how to properly pull the anchor and how the ball system works. Oh, and lastly , lastly, shipping has the right of way in the channel. Again, good video.Follow his advice and you will catch fish!
Really great video. I like how you guys go through the details. A lot of fishing vloggers don’t go into as much detail. I learn a lot from you guys, so thanks! I fish sturgeon in the CA Delta and I’m starting to fish sturgeon in a more shallow river (Petaluma River, offshoot of the San Pablo Bay, about 10-14 feet deep) and I’m wondering what you might do differently in this depth? Keep up the awesome work!
I've never caught a sturgeon but I'm currently getting gear rigged up to go give it a try here in Kentucky. my grandpa always talked about catching a sturgeon but never got around to do it before he passed so I'm going to catch one for him this Friday hopefully! I hope my carp rods are strong enough to hold one haha.
I want to fish by my place Niagara river and Lake Ontario I know holds monsters but be happy with a baby not going to keep catch and release is all I do thx again awesome videos
One thing we do when a sturgeon won't commit to the bait is pull it away from them. Seems like they will get more aggressive then. Also on slow bite days we will miracle thread the top half hitch and also the bottom of the hood of a squid so it will act as a event chamber and hold in whatever scent you are using longer causing a better scent trail.
Have you ever fished for sturgeon on the coos river out of coos bay Oregon I live right on the river and I know they are in here Iv seen them roll any tips to fishing this river never fished for them
Great Video! Thanks for the tips. I was wondering do you soak your squid in anything for a couple days before you go out fishing? If so what do you usually use?
I caught my first Sturgeon last week, but it was too small. it is on the bucket list. keepers are 40"-60" here in California. I am going to try the squid, it is a cheaper bait....... thx for Vid.
As hard as it is to believe I just went out on my first sturgeon trip today and caught one of only 2 caught that day and it was my 3rd fish ever caught.
It's illegal for us to catch sturgeon out here in Mass. But when we do hook up to one accidently, always be prepared to hold on for a Merrimack Sleigh Ride. xD
Finally started to get bites last trip Finally after being out 30 hours on the the water I lost the end of my my braid finding a loop in my reel wile casting 16 Oz 🤣🤣
I am looking to take my father in law fishing for these. Do you charter? If not can you point me to someone that does. I am out of Chicago and this fish is on his bucket list
I don't sturgeon fish but I did accidentally hook into 1 about 2 weeks ago when I caught it on 10 pound test while fishing for coho. It came in at 114 pounds70.5" long at 36" girth. It's on my page and the fight was one hour and 45 minutes long
I hook and release sturgeon all the time, from the bank or my 12 foot skiff with troll motor. Look for me on the Columbia sore liping the dog shit outta em
Haven't these fish been through enough? I fish a lot, but not for a fish that has been in decline for 100 years. There's so many other fish out there. Why not leave this one alone.
I shore fish sturgeon on the Fraser river.....my biggest 7ft and lostt one at least 10 or 11 ft from the jumps I saw Just learning right know.....11 ft rod rated 17 to 40 lb with a big penn Spinfisher VI 8500 spinning with 80 lb braid.....chunks of lamprey eel and the odd eulachon the native guys give me out of the net occasionally
Have you ever caught a sturgeon or is it still on your bucket list?! 🐟🐟

If a guy was wanting to fish for oversize sturgeon, we he used the bead swivel? That might be the weakest point. Great video by the way!

I caught my first Sturgeon last week, but it was too small. it is on the bucket list. keepers are 40"-60" here in California. I am going to try the squid, it is a cheaper bait....... thx for Vid.
