Don't know why they set you up with a conventional reel and a spinning rod. Not ever gonna cast right.
Dosent make a difference when the rod is that size

Take off the clicker when you cast it’ll throw your bait farther the clicking slows the spooldown

Make sure the next time you go that you have a leader for your weight that’s required in Idaho. Just looking out for you.

Oh, and as far as tricks, go on Amazon.com and get some of the little green twin bells that clip onto your rod. Be careful they don't get caught up in the line, but they work great. Also, when you get a nibble, don't set the hook. Wait til you get a nibble......nibble........nibble......and more. Then all of a sudden when your rod bends over, Crank down on it. You'll miss more than you catch if you try to set the hook on them at the first couple nibbles. They feel their food out with their mouth sometimes 8 and 10 times. Good luck. I'm an AVID sturgeon fisherman by the way.
Yep or if your line just goes slack reel it in tight and hold that pole got my first one like that he slacked my line and I got it tight set the hook but though my weight was snagged nope it was a fish
Casey, I'm a 28 year avid surgeon fishing veteran. Here's my friendly advice:
1) Don't worry about your rod/reel setup. I've seen hundreds of 6ft+ fish caught on that exact same kind of setup with no issues.
2) set your reel main line with 40-50lb mono, it will be plenty strong enough for any sturgeon you're going to catch in that stretch of river; and it will be more forgiving when the inevitable rat's nest happens again... They still happen to me.
3) practice practice practice... Your new sturgeon setup is just like archery. If you're going to be able to "send it to the moon" it's going to take some effort.
4) Cross the river and go up to the dam. The females are spawning right now and there's potential to catch more than one 6ft+ fish in a day.
5) I'm so so happy you're trying this! It's one of my favorite things in the whole world and I love seeing new people get into it! Good luck and hold on!
I would personally put like a 6000 or 8000 series spinning reel on that setup for 3 reasons. 1. That’s a spinning rod 2. You will have way better luck casting big weight and 3. The penn warfare is a designed trolling reel not really meant for casting at all
8000-10500 spinning reel. Anything smaller and you won't have the line capacity. 6000 is for catfish
A couple of things that may be of help, 80-100lb braid main line. End of main line should be 16” of 130lb Dacron (so slider can only travel a short distance) and have barrel swivel, bead, slider, bead, snap swivel. Leader should also be about 2’ and have a #7 barbless circle hook. Reel should be at least a 40 series bait caster and not have a line counter. They aren’t made to be casted. All three poles right next to each other is asking for a major tangle up. Pro cure makes several scents such as bloody tuna, anise, and garlic which can be injected into the bait.

I used to fish for sturgeon at CJ strike resevior in Idaho a lot while stationed at MHAFB. Spent many an evening/night waiting for the bite. its like catfishing, but on a larger scale...LOL. And yes, when the big one hits and runs...you will need a big rod/reel combo, its no joke. Funny side story....I bought nightcrawlers at a bait store while hurrying out to fish one evening in the middle of summer and stuck them in the center console of the truck and forgot about them when I got out to the lake to fish. DAYS later, I wassmelling something...and finally figured out what it was...NOT Pleasant!! LOL

Some people who work in sporting goods stores shouldn’t give advice! They sold you a spinning rod to use with that baitcaster. I’d take it back and get the right rod.

If you want a nice conventional set up and you plan on doing a lot of sturgeon fishing. I'd go with the Shimano Technium rod its specifically built for sturgeon, its only sold in Canada though, so you'll need to find a shop that will ship it to you. I would also pair it with either the Penn Squal or Fathom in at least the 30 series.
You should try the Yellowstone in Eastern Montana for shovelnose sturgeon so you can do a catch clean cook.
Try whole squid from your grocery store and live sand shrimp from a bait shop works great below Bonneville dam . Keep at em
That rod is next level. I use a okuma sst with a 30 to 50 pound line rating and a okuma line counter. She gave u way to much rod lol. I just learned to Cath these Dino's. Caught 3 Saturday. On the cowlitz in Washington!!! Was amazing. Caught a 6 footer. Get some sturgon candy. Picked hearing and squid!!!!
Casey, I lived in Idaho my whole life also. Just started sturgeon fishing in the last 2 years. I've hooked a few, never landed one. My nephew landed one in that exact spot two weeks ago! Great spot!!! Once you hook one, it will change you!!
Second this I got a baby 3.5 footer last weekend my first time out and I’m hooked I saw my line slack up reeled it right set the hook and thought my weight was snagged so left it well 20 mins later my pole just went down I thought no wind ima go home well I had one on assuming when my line slacked was my bit and I just happened to set the hook because my dad said they will do that but thought I was snagged till I went to go home I’m like dang I keep catching my weight up get it free got him 20 feet from shore and bam he went to take off I was like I got a cat fish or something kinda bummed then I seen him I was so pumped now I’m hooked
Fraser river produces 6-8 footers all day. IGFA world record is 11 ft.

Love it watched my parent sturgeon fish growing up and finally got there poles sense they no longer go pretty sure they have the same poles you got so it’s legit hahaha but went to strike last weekend and got 3.5 footer just a baby but it was my first time out and got one

You can run a twin hook setup out of the head, or thread it on like you guys did. I like both methods. I tend to run hook through the head, and half hitch it all the way down the sturgeon candy. Come fish with us at Swan Falls sometime.

Sturgeon are a lot of fun, I catch them in Washington. Make sure you put your thumb on the line when you set the hook or it will just pull drag. Setting the hook can be tricky keep at it

1) your line snapped because you backlashed 2) you bought a casting reel and put it on a spinning rod. Either go get a spinning reel, or a casting rod and then practice your casting. Good luck!

When your pole goes down like that every time they suck in you have to set that hook on the second take give her hell unless it’s mid summer and they are aggressive then they are picking it up and running but you have to set that hook as they suck it it’s a swing and a miss you just have to go for it
That rod is for spinning not levelwinds
Next time just cut the bait in half. You don't need a bait that big to catch a monster. Plus it'll allow you to cast a lot farther.

That is a spinning rod bot bait caster rod so you till be fighting the spine and risk braking it if u hook a big fish

The set up for sturgeon makes me cringe. You’re supposed to use 50 pound Dacron leader and your supposed to put the hook through the head and half hitch it up the body
